Time capsule disappears in Finder

For the past 4 years, I've had 2 Time Capsules setup up to use with my Macbook Pro.  One Time Capsule was used as the router and for the Time Machine backups, the other was used exclusively for an external hard drive.  Recently, the Time Capsule that served as the router/Time Machine crashed, and I replaced it with a current model Time Capsule.
I contacted Apple for help setting up the new Time Capsule.  I am using a Motorola Surfboard modem 6121, and the internet connection and Wifi are working.  The problem is that randomly, one or both of the Time Capsules will disappear from Finder.  Since my iTunes library is on one of the Time Capsules, I can't access the music files.  Also, when I use the Airport Utility on my Macbook, I get a yellow triangle next to all of the devices; however, when I use the Airport Utility on my iPad or iPhone, every device has a green light.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  I never had this problem with the same setup before I replaced the Time Capsule.
Thank you.

Do a clean new setup.
Do not use old settings at all.
Reset the TC to factory and start over in the airport utility setup.
Make sure the TC has a name like TCgen5
It should be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Make sure wireless also has a name like TCwifi
Make sure the wireless and ethernet in the computer have ipv6 set to link-local.. this is now essential.
In Finder, manually mount the TC disk.
Go Connect to server from the top menu.
Type in, AFP://TCgen5.local (use your name plus the local domain which is local by default)
Or even better.
AFP://10.0.1.1 or whatever is the IP address of the TC. Since it is then not going to get lost by ARP tables and DNS problems.
This is only useful if the TC is router.. or you can set static IP in the main router to the TC.
Much of these problems have started from Mavericks. But there are plenty of issues between the 6121 motorola modem and the new TC as well.. you may find multiple issues here.

  • Time Capsule Disappears When VPNing

I have a question regarding the use of VPNs and the availability of a network (ethernet) connected Time Capsule.  I'm using a Time Capsule (3TB from early 2013) that is solely used for Time Machine backups.  I have disabled all Time Capsule router settings, and instead rely on my Asus RT-N66U wireless router for all wireless and wired connections - I also have a 10/100/1000 switch for extra ethernet connections (Time Capsule is directly connected to the switch).  My MacBook Pro currently uses  wi-fi to connect to my local network - I have several network printers  and a NAS, and everything works perfectly when I am not VPN'd into my company network.
When I VPN into my company network, the Time Capsule "disappears" from my MacBook Pro's network (evidenced by a "Device Not Found" in the AirPort Utility), however all other network devices are still available and ready (most likely since they've been assigned static IPs within my local network).  I have given my Time Capsule a static IP in my network, but it still disappears from my MBP's network. Any Backups planned are delayed and I cannot run the backup manually.  However, I can still use the "Enter Time Machine" option to access data from within the Time Capsule.  What gives here?  Ideally, I'd like to be VPN'd but still have my Time Machine run as planned.  What's even stranger is that once I disconnect from the VPN, the Time Capsule still displays "Device Not Found" for quite some time, but eventually comes back to life.
Just for edification purposes, I'm using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN software and have enabled the "All local (LAN) access when using VPN" option.  Still no dice.  Any thoughts?

Routing is being messed up by the VPN or the DNS is not working properly.. either of which amount to the same thing.
Mount the TC in finder using its IP.
    Go, Connect to server.
AFP://10.0.1.1 (or whatever IP you have). The complex bit is you are going to need dhcp reservation on the main router to stop the TC from bouncing around its IP address.
Set that in your Asus main router.. but test it immediately before worrying too much.. if you get it mounted in Finder by IP address.. you can also discover it in Airport utility by using its IP directly..
You simply need to manually control things.. type in the IP to help it out.
Also don't forget the ipv6 setup to link-local only on the wireless/ethernet on the computer..
    Tell me how this goes.
Once you have the TC mounted in Finder.. have another go with TM.. if it still has issues.. change the name of the TC, make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. see if that helps.
BTW the windows method of fixing this would be simply edit the hosts file..
Looking it up there is a Mac equivalent.
    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-edit-the-mac-os-x-hosts-file-and-why-you-mig ht-want-to/
Of course it is essential that the TC does not change IP.. so fix that in the asus as I said and make sure if you shut down and restart the TC it does actually pick up the IP.. you can also try using static IP on the TC as an alternative to bridge this actually works well but is a little more involved to setup..

having trouble with time capsule, won't find backups

Usually a simple reboot will work.. Reboot the TC..
If that is not enough.. Restart the whole network from off.
Mountain Lion and to a lesser extent Lion.. have network issues and lose track of the TC.

It will only appear in devices if you mount the drive. This should happen automatically when Time Machine starts.. but you can manually mount the share by just clicking it.

  • Time Capsule disappears from desktop

    Hello,
since the last update to version 7.6.3 Time Capsule disappears after about 150 seconds from the desktop. This disturbs my workflow quite strong, because I use the Time Capsule not only as a Time Machine backup, but also as a network storage. Where can I set that the Time Capsule will remain permanently on the desktop?
Thank you for your kind assistance.
    Franz
PS: Please excuse my bad english.

    Hi Jay,
    1. start the Airport-Utility
    2. click on „Manual Setup“
    3. click on „Version“ („Overview“ Sreen –> third row)
    4. choose the Firmware Version you want to install
After downgrading the Time Capsule restarts automatically and does no longer disappear from the desktop after a while.
Although I am not an english native speaker I hope that the guidance is understandable.

  • Time Capsule disappears from Airport Utility, need to restart to find it.

I got a new Time Capsule for Christmas. Our household was using a D-Link router. The network was working fine for a Macbook, iMac, 2 x iPhones, PC Laptop and desktop. The two laptops are upstairs and connect wirelessly to the Time Capsule and an airport Express connected to stereo is set to extend the network.
Since Christmas the laptops are losing contact with the Time Capsule. At first I'd physically disconnect the modem and TC and the TC would reappear. Finding this annoying I rang Apple. I was told to edit locations in networks, add a location and basically reselect my network. I was told to monitor this, but that it should help. The TC went off airport utility again (the green light was still on), so i went through the process of edit location again and it worked. I posted the problem in macbook internet, thinking it was a macbook issue as my iPhone could still connect to the network and have internet. People suggested i do a power cycle. The next time the network crashed I performed a power cycle on every item connected to the network and turned on in correct order.
Tonight my macbook and pc laptop lost connection with the internet again. I had to physically take the TC and modem of power to get the network back again.
This is happening every couple of days, and I'm now sure it's a Time Capsule issue, this issue didn't happen with my D-Link router. I have my Macbook completing Time Machine Backups wirelessly, and when we lose connection with the TC, backups are delayed. Could the Time Machine backups be causing this loss of connection?
I'm going to call Apple and see if they have another solution, but was checking to see if others have had this problem and maybe a solution?

    I just purchased a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB (ME 182 AM/A)
I broke my own rules.. as I saw one going really cheap and our currency is dropping like crazy so i thought I better get one .. stupid idea.. it lasted less than week and then refused to even power on.. It has gone back for replacement.
For your situation I think the problem is not the TC as much as it is yosemite.. but it is the combo.
Try the things I have suggested in this thread.. they have worked or helped other people.

  • Time capsule disappears from airport utility and finder while wifi still works

I am connected through my time capsule as wifi router.
Sometimes, while connected to the TC's wifi, the time capsule disapears from the finder and from the airport utility.
This leads to my time machine not backing up.

Thank you for your idea. However, after having imported the setup of the previous TC and having experienced problems, I had already done a factory reset and configured everything from scratch! Without using the profile. So I think we can safely exclude a problem connected with importing the older profile, which was in fact my first idea.
On the other side, I haven't tried your suggestion to give separate names to the 5 and 2,4 GHz wireless signals. I'll try this evening, as a last attempt before sending the TC back to Apple. BTW, I put my old TC back in place, and apart from the fact that the disk is noisy and almost full it works without a glitch. Which makes a software or configuration issue less likely, I believe.

  • Time Capsule disappears from network

    Hi,
I'm using a 2Tb Time Capsule (version 7.6.4), both for backing up my Mac mini and the iMac of my wife, as well as to create the LAN/WLAN at home. I never experienced any problems with it, until starting a few days ago the TC disappears from the network every now and then.
The funny thing is that the green LED is still on while the TC is 'gone', as well as internet access works without problems. After a couple of minutes the TC returns as if nothing would have happened. In case a scheduled backup is initiated while the TC is 'absent', I get an error message from the Time Machine, saying that it didn't find the backup disk. I restarted the TC once, but it didn't help.
    Cheers
                     Christopher

I have been having this issue the last few weeks. TimeMachine reports that it is unable to complete hourly backups and Airport Utility reports the prior seen TC cannot be found.
I have reset each device several times.
Tonight I ran Airport Utility and left it on and the Airport TC alternately reports "Device Not Found" (Internet light is green, Airport light is orange) and then a minute or two later "Reading Settings on Airport" (with both lights green). It then reverts to Device not Found.
This TC has been working just fine for the last 8 or 9 months since I bought it.
Is there a utility of some sort that I could run to check the integrity of the hardware?

  • Time Capsule disappears after back up

    Hi
I run and iMac 27 with the latest version of Lion on it and I have been having trouble with a new Time Capsule. My TC is connected to my wireless Belkin router via an Ethernet cable. After some initial set up problems (during which I upgraded the firmware on the TC to the latest version) I finally managed to get the IMac to see the TC and then commenced the first back up. This was scheduled to take a number of hours so after baby sitting it when there were no problems, I left it overnight, setting the screen to switch off but the machine to remain on. When I checked the next day the TC drive had disappeared. The only way I could get the TC to reappear was to reboot both router and TC, at which point I then restarted the back up which appeared to pick up from where it stopped (in terms of time to complete). Having to leave it overnight once more, I was disappointed to discover the same thing happened again. So rebooted again and recommenced the process. This time I managed to see it through to the end and was amazed to see the process complete and then the TC icon on the desk top disappear. Clicking on the TC icon on the toolbar and selecting back up now the system reported a message that the back up was delayed as it could not find the back up drive. All the time the router was connected to the Internet and the green light on the TC was solid.
I have had a look at a number of threads and can see a number of people having connection problems but nothing exactly like mine so I am hoping it is just a setting. Any help or ideas would be gratefully appreciated
    regards
    Keith

    I did a restore,
If you mean you restored your entire system from your backups, that's why TM is doing a new full backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338 (although some of the TM engineers claim this doesn't happen anymore in Snow Leopard, it does -- I tried it).
My hard drive is 285.48 GB with 24.11 GB available. Not sure how big the TC is. The message says I need 300 something GB for the backup, but only 128 mb is available. Should I erase it and start over?
That means you have about 261 gb used on your internal; TM adds 20% for workspace and "padding" when making room, so that's why it needs over 300 gb.
TC's used to be 500 gb, recently only 1 tb and 2 tb models are available.
So if it's a 500 gb model, there isn't room for two full backups.
Do you have anything else on the TC besides TM backups? If so, then delete the sparse bundle via the Finder.
If not, you can just erase the TC:
Use the +*Airport Utility+* app, in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.

  • Time Capsule disappears from Wireless connections

I use a Time capsule with a variety of wireless and wired Macs and have continous problems with the wireless Macs using time machine.   A reboot of the Time Capsule will fix the issue for a few days but then it will disappear when Time Machine tries to connect,   The wired machines have no problem and can always get connection to the Time Capsule wen Time Machine wants to backup.
It appears to be an issue with the AFP server on the Time Capsule.  When connecting to the Time Capsule using "Go To Server" from finder, the wireless machines can always connect using smb, but when Time Machine is not working they fail to connect using afp.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour.  Given I can always connect using smb, it does appear to be some form of software issue on the Time Capsule.  The
Time Capsule is running the latest version of firmware 7.6.1 and the Macs are 10.8.2.   The issue has been the same since 10.7.

Well decided the best approach is to use a script to reboot the Time Capsule on a regular basis.  Had to hack some previous scripts on the Web to get to work using AirPort Utility 5.6.
tell application "AirPort Utility 5.6" to activate
    delay 2
    tell application "System Events"
tell application process "AirPort Utility 5.6"
                        tell window "AirPort Utility 5.6"
select row 2 in table 1 in scroll area 1
                                  delay 1
                                  click button "Manual Setup"
                                  delay 1
                        end tell
click menu item "Restart…" in menu "Base Station" in menu bar 1
      delay 1
tell window "AirPort Utility 5.6 - Robert Halliday's Time Capsule"
click button "Continue" in sheet 1
                        end tell
              end tell
    end tell
    delay 10
tell application "AirPort Utility 5.6" to quit
Anyone more familiar with Applescript, improvements welcome.  The script does appear to have problem reliably performing the click on the menu.  It appears to work some of the time!?
The along with a calendar event as will as a scheduled on/off using Energy Saver should allow for a regular reboot - giving the script works!

  • 2 Time Capsule Icons In Finder

I was having problems connecting to the internet and called AppleCare. They had me reset my time capsule and set it up again from scratch. All was well last night but this morning when I woke my iMac up there are now 2 Time Capsule icons in the Finder. One looks like the normal TC icon and says Mac server and the other looks like a PC and says PC server. Anyone know what's going on? This thing worked flawlessly until yesterday.

honestly I went through the settings on the TC and was not able to find anything that would specifically effect windows SMB filesharing. My thought is that it, by default, has that particular protocol enabled. From looking around the other forums, it appears that other users are having PC servers popping up when networked with other Apple devices (computers specifically). My thought is that it is a small "bug" in leopards expanded Windows networking abilities. Many people claim to not have had the issue with older Mac OSX versions and that it only arose when upgrading to leopard.
Since the Macbook is not here right now for me to experiment, and my TC does not show up as a windows server, perhaps give a try at disabling SMB file sharing in the Sharing preferences pane. If the PC Server portion of the TC disappears than we know it is Leopards SMB sharing that causes this. if you network with other windows computer though you will want to re-enable this.
The fact that all SMB enabled apple devices don't show up on other Macs as PC servers indicates to me that it is likely a bug (either all or none should show up), as my MacPro does not show up as a PC server on the Macbook.
Go figure. At least this isn't terribly intrusive (maybe just a little ugly to have that blue screen of death lingering in the finder sidebar!)

  • When clicking on Time Capsule in the Finder Sidebar, it doesn't connect.

Once in a while when I click on Time Capsule's icon in the sidebar of the finder window, I am unable to connect to Time Capsule. Yet, if I use the "Connect to Server..." command, I'm able to do so.
A possible problem is that there is something wrong with your IP address even though you are able to connect to the internet. Whatever the reason, this worked for me:
    1. go to Apple > System Preferences > Network
    2. Click on the Advanced button
    3. Find and click on "Renew DHCP Lease" usually under TCP/IP
This has solved my problem. Now I can directly access Time Capsule from the sidebar.
Another fix is to go to Time Machine under System Preferences, select "None" for hard drive, turn off Time Machine, then turn it back on and reselect Time Capsule as the hard drive to backup.
All previous backups remain intact and nothing will be lost.
What I suspect is that there is some kind of mismatch between Bonjour and the IP address. This may happen after I've restarted the Time Capsule or after I directly connect to the Time Capsule via ethernet cable and then later access it using Wifi.

  • Time Capsule can't find AirPort

    Hi there,
I have just got an airport to back up my Mac OS 10.6.8 and have successfully connected it to the WiFi, and it is seen through ststem preferences but I want to use it as a back up tool too and when I go through Time Machine it can't find the device - any help would be great!

It's A1470, air port time capsule 802.11 ac.
Bit worried that it's not safe or time machine as that is the exact reason I bought it and was recommended it in the apple store?!
That is fine.. it is just you posted airport, not Time Capsule.. and what most people mean by airport is the extreme.
    Next problem..
The TC must not be properly setup. Indeed it is not possible to setup an AC model TC or AE using 10.6.8 OS so please tell us how you set it up.
I have just got an airport to back up my Mac OS 10.6.8 and have successfully connected it to the WiFi
How?? The 5.6 utility in SL cannot do it.
Are you using an iphone/ipad with the latest airport utility.
Once setup the older OS should be able to use it.. but it cannot do the setup.
Let me suggest you give us more details.
A few screenshots helps no end.
What are you seeing in the finder and airport utility?
Does the TC show up in Finder?
You said you can see it in system preferences.. sorry but I am not sure how.. please screenshot that as well.
As a setup method.. if you really have joined the TC to the existing wifi (unless it is an apple router) that is the worst possible seutp.
Please plug the TC WAN port into the main router LAN port by ethernet.
Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • Time Capsule can't find data

    Hi
I recently moved house and with it my time capsule, the problem is I can no longer find the data I held on my Time Capsules hard drive (primarily Movies and Photos). It's a 1TB TC, showing free space of 57GB so I believe the data is there but I just can't see it.
Previously I would just go to Finder > Time Capsule > Data and it was there, the same folder exists now but it appears to be empty.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Turn on the guest account..
Make sure you connect by ethernet..
Press reset and try the setup again.
Reset will not delete files.. you have to deliberately erase them.
