Time Capsule - Disposal

My time capsule died and want to know the best way to disposal it without causing problem for the environment.  Any one knows?
Thanks.

Sell it on ebay.. then someone can use the parts or even get it going again. Mostly it is just the power supplies that die.. Just state clearly that it is sold for parts. Not working. Plenty of people are after them.
Do you care about what is on the hard disk? If so remove the hard disk before sale and plug it into a computer and wipe it.
If there is anyone on the repair network nearby offer it to them.. they will wipe the drive for you and even get it running again.. or just buy the shell.

How do I safety dispose of an old, unusable time capsule?  If at all possible, I would like to recycle.

If the TC is dead.. then you need to open it to erase the hard disk..
    See http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
There is nothing you can do in a dead TC to delete your files and if you have info in a TM backup it is a risk.
Apple will exchange the dead one if you buy a new TC.. but they have no return program for the TC itself.
Once you wipe the disk it is safe to put it back and sell on ebay or wherever.

  • Disposing of time capsule hard drive

I've got an older Time Capsule with a 1 TB hard drive. It was purchased about 4-5 years ago. It stopped working, and we have replaced it with a newer Time Capsule.
My question is: I need to dispose of the hard drive. There is a local shredding company who will take care of this, but they informed me that they need the hard drive to be handed over to them – the hard drive itself, solely – without the Time Capsule enclosure.
Any idea on how I'm supposed to accomplish this…?

Disk removal from the early TC is fairly easy.
    See http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
The instructions for A1302 (gen2) covers whatever model you have.
The disk might still be good btw. Especially the Gen1 TC used hitachi drives which are excellent.
You can buy a USB disk holder for less than $20.. (OWC has some for about $5)
You can wipe the drive yourself.. put it back into the TC and sell the whole thing on ebay for a few dollars.
They can be repaired by replacing the power supply which is also readily available now on ebay for around $50.
You need only a few tools.

  • How can I test the usb port on my Time Capsule to see if it is working?

Ever since lightening struck nearby (which took out our internet and copy machine) the printer I had connected to the usb port on my Time Capsule in my office has has failed to print through the TC. I can plug the printer directly into my MacBookAir and can print just fine. So there is nothing wrong with the printer nor the usb cable.
I've turned off and unplugged the printer with the usb cable connected & disconnected to the TC, no change. I've unplugged the TC, no change. I've opened the printer utility several times, and always get the "offline" error. I open the print queue, and it says the printer is not connected. I reinstalled the driver for the printer, still the same thing.
I'm starting to wonder if the usb port on my Time Capsule got fried. Any help anyone can give in trying to see if the usb port even functions anymore would be greatly appreciated.
My Time Capsule is model no. A1409.

Power is not likely to be killed .. it is the data components that are more fragile.
So you do have power which as you say is why the USB flashes.. but you don't have signal.
The only other thing you can do is use USB powered hub.. if you have one handy.. but I would not go out and buy one.
A damaged board is impossible (at cost less than replacement TC) to repair. And repairers do not like working on stuff damaged by lightning as components that did survive were stressed.. the transistor junctions become liable to fail at any time.. so you repair it and it just keeps coming back as not working. Sorry if you cannot use it without USB junk it and buy a replacement. A second hand Gen3 is about the best of them it seems.
You can also buy an ethernet to USB print server.. but a new ethernet or wireless network printer is probably near to the same price.
You can hunt ebay for second hand USB print servers.. or airport express, extreme or TC.. often you can find something suitable for just a few dollars if you shop well. Since you don't need the latest greatest to do this sort of job.. and people are disposing of things like USB print servers as soon as they buy network printers.

  • Time Capsule and External Drive Options

I wanted to inquire if I can use my Time Capsule as an external drive. Reading some of the questions submitted I am still a little unclear. Here is my issue, I have a macbook pro and I am reaching my maximum capacity on my hard drive space. Most of the data is iMovie, Photos, and iTunes. Now I do not need all this data all the time, it just sits on my macbook pro as if it is being stored. I would like to move this to a external drive and I assumed the Time Capsule functions as a external drive. But reading all the posts in the communities it seems like that the Time Capsule can hold some space as an external drive but then if the TC starts to reach its maximum capacity it would delete the stored data. I am interested in doing the following, please guide me if this is possible:
    1) The videos/music/pictures that I do not need anymore but would like to archive it, can I store it on the Time Capsule and treat it like an external drive?
    2) I got a 2TB TC which I know only 250GB space would be utilized maximum by my MacBook Pro and the remaining space would be utilized for nothing. Unless for instance my Macbook backs up everyday to the TC and it stores 250GB each day then it would reach its maximum capacity on the TC really quickly and will delete the latest version of back up automatically. Is that true? Or does the TC only creates another back up of the changes found. I am just trying to figure out if I can somehow utilize the space on the TC for storage especially if I know that I probably wont have enough data for 2TB.
    3) What are my options if I want to store the data and want to retrieve it at my disposal. I just want to make more space on my MacBook Pro.
    4) What is the return policy on the TC if opened?
    Thank you

But reading all the posts in the communities it seems like that the Time Capsule can hold some space as an external drive but then if the TC starts to reach its maximum capacity it would delete the stored data.
When space is tight on the drive, Time Machine will automatically start to delete the oldest Time Machine backups to make room for newer backups.
But, Time Machine will leave any regular files or folders that you might have stored on the drive untouched. Those files will never be deleted unless you delete them yourself.
    1) The videos/music/pictures that I do not need anymore but would like to archive it, can I store it on the Time Capsule and treat it like an external drive?
If you move any files from your Mac, then the only copy of those files that you will have will be on the Time Capsule drive. You have no backups for these files, so you might want to think about this a bit. If your attitude is such that if the files are lost due to a Time Capsule drive problem, and it is of no great concern, that's one thing.
If losing thes files would cause you grief, you would want to think about having a backup plan in place for the "original" files that you move to the Time Capsule drive. For some reason, users seem to forget that if they move a file from their Mac to another drive, they only have one copy of that file....unless they create backups manually.
Unless for instance my Macbook backs up everyday to the TC and it stores 250GB each day then it would reach its maximum capacity on the TC really quickly and will delete the latest version of back up automatically. Is that true?
Sounds like you are confused about how Time Machine works. The Time Machine application will back up everything on your Mac on the first backup. After that, it only backups up any changes that you make to the Mac.
If you do not anticipate making a a lot of changes or adding a lot of new data, your backups will remain very small. If on the other hand you regularly add a number of new large images from your camera, or new movies, Time Machine will be backing up each new set of images or movies that you add.
    3) What are my options if I want to store the data and want to retrieve it at my disposal. I just want to make more space on my MacBook Pro.
You can move files from your Mac to the Time Capsule if you want to, as long as you remember that when you do this, you are moving the "original" files to the Time Capsule disk. You will have no backups in the evernt of a problem with the Time Capsule.
It sounds a bit harsh....but the truth remains that all drives will fail.  If your Time Capsule fails , you lose the Time Machine backups, but you still have the "original" files on your Mac.
If you move an "original" file off of your Mac to the Time Capsule and the Time Capsule fails....you have no backups of these files.
The whole idea about a good backup plan is that you have "originals" on one drive and "backups" on another.....in case one drive fails, you still have a copy of everything.  Make sense?
    4) What is the return policy on the TC if opened?
Best to ask the store that you buy from about their return policies in advance. We can't speak for any stores, or for Apple here.

  • My macbook and time capsule all died within the week.  I can't turn the power on.  any idea?  is there a reset button?

My time capsule is dead.  When I plug it in, there is no power.
The macbook just died yesterday before I could get another backup & wifi.  It won't turn the power on any more.  Is there a reset/reboot button hidden somewhere?  Or do I have to bring it in and try to get all my info back?
    Thanks.

TC die at around 3years.. earlier models generally faster.. so most a dead already.
There is nothing you can do.. either repair or dispose of it. Apple will not assist unless it is less than 3years old and you have applecare on a computer.
Even then they will replace with a refurbished of the same model.
Some of us do not like the throw away model Apple has adopted.. but if it is Gen 1 or even Gen 2 it could be time for update.

    Macbook
These are seldom worth the expense of repairing. Once they are over 3years.. the cost of parts is a significant percentage of the new items.. the hard drive can be pulled to recover your files. Ask a tech in a repair centre for help doing that.

  • Restore from Time Capsule fails

I'm trying to restore from my Time Capsule backup over ethernet. I've tried with two different cat5e cables, but each time it goes extremely slowly, (it only gets to .4% after an hour and says it'll take 600 hours). After about an hour it fails and this is the crash log:

Which is almost two hours ago, and the messages were coming every second or two before that. I'm not sure what the problem is this time.
That is a bit odd. The file it's referring to (/private/var/db/shadow/hash/xxx) is in a hidden system folder at the top level of your internal HD.
In my installation, /private/var/db/shadow/ is an empty folder, so I have no idea what it is.
Although when I open SystemMigration.log, these lines are updating:
    2010-07-05 22:52:36 -0400 (Nop) throughput = 0.628692 MB/s. (+ 2041 files)
so I take that to mean it's copying files.
Looks like it, and the timestamp is after the previous one.
Is that a normal throughput, though?
Hard to tell. I haven't done a large migration in quite a while (not since Leopard, I think), and I wasn't watching the log.
How much data was on your system? Deduct perhaps 10 GB for OSX, and a few more for Applications. See how long that would take at about 20 GB/hr.
I'd let it alone for quite a while (longer than 20 GB/hr). But if you decide it's hung, cancel it and see how far it got.
You should be able to figure out where it was when it hung, and start over with the next top-level folder, then work on the missing items later.
But before you start again, repair your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Hang in there. You are making progress, whether it feels like it or not.
It's getting late here, and I'll be going to bed in a while, so if you post after that, I won't answer until tomorrow.
    But do keep us posted.

  • What to do with an old Time Capsule?

I just retired a 5 year old Time Capsule after replacing it with a new 2 TB model.
What could I do with the old one?
Would it be good for extending improving my home network? Existing network seems pretty fast with the new time capsule. Would using the old one on the network slow things down?
Would it make sense to connect it to a Blu-Ray player and use it instead of wifi?
    Anything else come to mind?
    I have enough doorstops.
    Thanks for the advice.

Sell it on ebay.. it is due to die very shortly.. wipe the hard disk and dispose..
Or as suggested to a friend.. it is worth very little. You got your money's worth out of it.

  • Time Capsule and FiOS wireless router

Can I connect the Time Capsule to my FiOS router and then disable the wifi feature on the FiOS router?

Are there any known issues with the TC in general, particularly from the wifi perspective?
TC is much better than it was.. make sure you keep it cool.. place it up from the bench on a couple of pencils.. that stuff about conductive rubber.. ignore it.. rubber in all its forms is an insulator and holds in heat. If it does start running really hot.. it has a fault and you should take it back.. Same with hard disk.. they occasionally go bad.. so backup to it.. fine.. storing files on it.. no don't do it.
Remember it is covered under your computer applecare.. so if you have any computer with extended applecare it will cover TC with certain conditions.. but that gives the TC effectively 3years warranty.. after that.. dispose of it and buy a new one.. the TC is not going to be reliable as the hard disk has been starting and stopping multiple times every day for 3years.. just don't trust them.
Wireless is ok.. I don't think it is particularly good range wise. Although Apple said how much better it was than previous Generations.. I have had all 4 now.. and performance in my experience was line ball between all of them. Apple design their routers to work very well with AEBS or AEx so if you want to extend wireless it is simple.. just it doesn't work with any other brand.. apple now reflecting a rather dark empire tendency.. they used to critize in others.
Clarification question...how do I backup my current files on the Lacie to the TC? Would that simply be connecting the two devices via USB and copying over?
Backing up TM files?? Not a good idea.. TM works differently on local disks and network disks.. and TC is best left to do its own stuff. If you mean moving actual file storage.. don't. The TC is not a file store.. it is a backup target.. TC has no way to back itself up.. and TM cannot backup a network drive .. so you would have to buy 3rd party software anyway.
Also USB on the TC is purely for printer and USB connected disk.. but you cannot directly copy from one to the other.. it would have to copy over network to the computer and then back to the TC.. it will be 2x to 4x faster if you do want to copy files to use Lacie plugged into the computer.. and copy to the TC. At least files are only going one way.

  • Changing a Time Capsule from use a backup device to use as an external hard drive

    Hey there,
I bought my Time Capsule about a year ago and have been using it as a backup device through time machine.  Now I would like to use it as an external hard drive.
I have tried to reset the device and to erase the data file but I still cant seem to get it to work as an external hard drive.
Could anyone tell me how to do this or what I am doing wrong please?
    Thanks so much
    Tuku

    LaPastenague,
I've read a few threads and you've replied to several of these, so I imagine you're familiar with the Time Capsule (TC) and hopefully are able to help me solve my 2 problems:
1)access my TC files from the internet (TC at home, me at work, downloading a big file),
    this didn't work: http://www.stratospherix.com/support/gsw_timecapsule.php?page=6remote
perhaps Bonjour would work but I can't find a good explanation anywhere
2)watch movies stored on my TC using my PS3 without using a MacBook or a PC.
Ideally I would use one of my android devices as a dedicated server but I don't know how to accomplish this and I'm afraid the file transfer rate would be too slow for movies once I get it running.  Most Mac experts don't seem to work at all with android or Windows so an iphone or ipad solution is okay.
I have tools at my disposal: cable internet with dynamic IP but have a dynDNS account, 2TB TC new as of summer 2012 running latest firmware, iphone5, ipadmini, 2 android phones and an android GalaxyTab.  For initial programming or setup purposes I have a Windows8 PC and a MacBookAir (but I want the computers to be off when I access my TC files in the future).
Please bear in mind I've read the related threads out there, perhaps not the right ones.  I'm not a regular poster but I've spent so much time trying to figure it out I've become desperate.  I'm trying to make the switch to Mac but the TC is making this difficult.  I can't justify another purchase (eg Mac Mini) right now so I'd like to figure out how to make my $300 TC work for me at least as well as a non-Apple product that costs half as much.  I appreciate your thoughtful response.

    Clinton

  • AirPort Time Capsule Explosion

    hi.
oh well... today was a normal working day and suddenly the AirPort Time Capsule issued a very loud explosive sound... then the electricity of my office goes out (electricity breakers out). the sounds was similar like an condensator explosion. (no burning smell) that really scare me!
the device is only a month old. still have a warranty... but... what about my backups? I don't want to send it back to the seller (a marketplace on amazon) with the idea that anyone can see my data. and I cannot format the HDD because the AirPort Time Capsule is totally dead...
my question, is there another way to apply the warranty? without having to send the HDD?
any comments about a similar experience will be appreciated. thanks.

Apple has always considered the Time Capsule a sealed unit, so they will replace the Time Capsule in the event that the product fails during the warranty period, or under AppleCare.
Unfortunately, you really have no option except to return the defective Time Capsule and trust that it will be disposed of properly, and the hard drive destroyed. As far as I know and have seen looking at the forums, no user has ever experienced any issues when they have returned a defective Time Capsule.
Opening up the Time Capsule will void the warranty, so if the seller or service agent detects that the Time Capsule has been opened, the warranty will be void on the product. No one can tell you how closely the defective Time Capsule will be inspected.
If you cannot take the Time Capsule to an Apple Store,  please contact Apple Support.  http://www.genie9.com/business/genie_timeline_pro/overview.aspx

  • Lifespan of AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule

In April 2009, I bought a 1 TB Time Capsule.  It developed the power supply problem (covered in other discussions) and died.  In September 2011, I bought a replacement 2 TB Time Capsule.
A few weeks ago, while running a Time Machine backup from my MacBook, the Time Capsule spontaneously reset rather violently -- there was a noticeable sound it was so violent.
Since that spontaneous reset, I have two problems:  (1) The guest network will not give an IP address to any device.  (2) On the main network, the performance has been very spotty.  (I get occasional disconnects on various devices, webpages may stall or not load, etc.  The Airport indicator ("rainbow") remains active when experiencing these issues.)
My question:  Is this a reasonable experience?  Should I realistically expect to buy a new base station every 2 years?  Are these problems more common with the Time Capsule than with the plain AirPort Extreme?  I have heard of drive failures on the Time Capsules, but my problems seem to relate to the wireless capabilities, not the drives.
    Thanks,
    Brian

The Time Capsule has not lasted as well as the Extreme. I think the reason is mistakes were made in the design. It is too small to hold a full size hdd.. it is over hot when it runs, because the fan which is available doesn't run.. and putting the power supply inside a sealed device makes it extremely difficult to fix.
If you have apple care on any computer and the TC was purchased within 2years of it, then it is also covered. So you still have some time, to get a new computer and get the TC fixed. I think Apple now expect you to dispose of everything on a 3year cycle.. and keep it whilst it has applecare.. !!
Many of the early express did die with the same problem of internal power supply.. it leads to the device running too hot. They did seem to get it fixed in the later ones.

  • What is best method to discard a used Apple Time Capsule

I have a Time Capsule which became defective.  How should I discard this piece of equipment?  Is there any security issue regarding data on the hard drive?

The files on the hard disk are sadly still accessible to a knowledge person..
I would open the TC.. remove the hard disk. See https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
Then you can plug the hard disk into a USB hard drive cradle you can obtain from any large computer store for a few dollars or millions on ebay.. and plug it into your computer and wipe it. You can then put the HDD back into the TC and sell it as broken on ebay.. there is plenty of demand for broken ones for parts.
If all of that seems over the top.. take it to your apple store and ask for it to be disposed of. Apple should be able to offer a secure disposal service. Since the failure of the device is their fault.. and the lack of ability to remove the hard disk is also a design flaw.. well it is easy enough for them to dispose of properly.
If it is a Gen1 or Gen2 .. you can buy a replacement power supply on ebay for $40 or so and fix it up .. then you can sell it off working.
See my website for more info on how to repair.

  • Outlook emails onto Time Capsule

I need to be able to access easily old Outlook emails as if they were on my Macs Hard Drive. I would like to use my Time Capsules HD to do this as well as storing other files/folders from my old PC, I guess I'm trying to set it up as a wireless cloud type arrangment except without clogging up my internet connection. Another way to easily explain it.......I'm running my new Mac as well as my old PC side by side as I need info of it...

Why not just copy the PST outlook files to the Mac? And use outlook in Mac version.. MS office. It can surely import or directly open the PST file.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2413370
You can just open the PST file if you need an email..
Otherwise keep the PC running until you have finished all you need to refer to. It is rather short sighted to simply dispose of a computer if you actually need access to it. And it is always easier to access from the native software and application that was used than any imported version.
