Time Capsule does not have a valid IP address

We have 2 computers in our home office: a Win 7 desktop and an iMac.
We have cable internet; the cable modem (Toshiba PCX2500) is plugged (ethernet) directly into the Time Capsule, which we use as our router to the two computers (also by ethernet).
The wireless functionality of the Time Capsule has been turned off.
We’ve been using the Time Capsule like this for the past 18 months (we purchased it new) without any problems.
Last month, however, we began losing our internet connection regularly (about 3-4 times per day) and getting the dreaded golden flashing light (as opposed to solid green) along with the error (paraphrasing here) “the Apple Wi-Fi does not have a valid IP address.”
We hadn’t made any changes in our hardware; it just showed up out of the blue.
After contacting our ISP, we were advised to unplug the cable modem for about 30 seconds, then plug it back it. Most of the time this worked; if not, we had to “cycle” the Time Capsule as well.
We’re now having to do this about 4-5 times per day.
Sometimes the Time Capsule’s status light is still green when we have no internet connection. Out of the blue the connection just isn’t there.
We “cycle” the cable modem and we’re back in business every time.
Additionally, when we actually do have an internet connection, the speeds fluctuate wildly. We’re paying for 15 Mb service; as of the past 4-5 weeks, we get 15Mb about 50% of the time. The other 50% it generally averages between 3Mb and 6Mb.
The ISP’s tech support (we’ve contacted them no less than once a week since this started) swears up and down that it’s the router, not their signal or their equipment in any way. They deny all culpability.
We even had the ISP’s repair people come out on an occasion about 10 days ago to test the signal strength; they reported no problems. “You’ve got great signal strength to your home…” were the exact words.
Similarly, after calling Apple on 2-3 occasions, we get the exact same response: “It’s not the Time Capsule router, it’s your ISP.”
The last Apple technician we spoke with (yesterday) said, “I’ve been doing wireless/Internet tech support for years and I can guarantee you – 100% -- that it’s a ‘DNS caching’ issue. I’m 100% positive that’s your problem, and I’m also 100% positive it’s your ISP’s fault.”
After contacting the ISP again we were informed that they don’t have any such caching problems.
We’re tired and frustrated! Please help.

I would suggest running the network via a pc for the day.. pick either your Mac or win7 pc.. you will need to do a bit of fiddling.. even better would be to just borrow a router. Or buy one on a 7day return .. !! Beg borrow.. don't steal. Just get a router other than TC. it won't take long to determine if the TC is the issue.
IMO at 18months you are suffering failure of the TC power supply. early days but it is showing signs of delinquency. And will get worse. But another router will show it up.. if the PC has dual ethernet cards you can run ICS.. or same sort of thing on the imac to the wireless .. ie the PC or Mac becomes the router with direct connection to the cable modem. Then share internet from there.
Once you do that for a day or two, you will quickly be able to track down if the issue is cable service/modem or the TC as router.

  • Airport Extreme does not have a valid IP address

My Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11N (AEBS) no longer has an internet connection and I cannot share internet or even access the internet via an ethernet cable from the AEBS to my iMac unless in Bridge mode. I have a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core iMac running OS X 10.5.6. I also have an Airport Express (802.11b/g) currently offline.
When I plug my ethernet cable directly into the iMac I've got a fast and reliable internet connection. I have also done 2 hard resets on my AEBS without any success. I have ensured that my cables are properly plugged in and had it checked by another person.
I do not have a specific IP address from my Internet Service Provider (ISP). I have contacted my ISP and have confirmed that there is nothing wrong on their end. I had an internet connection previously with "Using DHCP". Now when I select it blanks out the IP address box. I referred to my last working saved Airport setting and my AEBS still does not have an internet connection.
I'm not sure what else I can do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I'm having a similar problem. Saturday morning my Comcast Internet was gone. I went through all the steps to troubleshoot (powering everything down, checking connections, powering back up from outside, connecting directly to the cable modem via Ethernet, etc.). I only got a valid IP address for a brief few minutes when directly connected. Comcast swapped out my modem, but same issue. Then Sunday they said known problem in area. This morning I got on the line with a level 2 tech. We went through just about everything again, and I can connect very reliably via direct Ethernet connect to modem. If I unplug the ethernet and give it a minute to recognize its gone, ip address goes blank. When I plug it back in, it gets a valid IP address and Internet connects almost instantaneously.
However, with my AEBS (n) I can't get a valid IP address. I use the exact same Ethernet cable from the cable modem the AEBS Internet WAN port. But it gives itself a self-assigned IP of 169.254... I've gone through the cycles of powering down and back up a couple of times, checked my connections several times, and reset my AEBS to factory defaults. Still no dice. Internet is set to DHCP and to share a public IP address (in the default 10.0.1.x ranges). Has my AEBS effectively lost its ability to get a valid IP from the modem? Is it dead? Anything you can think of that I can try?

  • "Your airport device does not have a valid IP address"

    Hello,
Hoping someone can be kind enough to help here, please let me know if I haven't provided enough details or in the wrong format as I'm not hugely technical.
I have recently bought an Airport Express to connect to my existing Wi-Fi network. I have a Netgear DG834G v4 router-modem-base-station-thing and there are two computers running Windows 7 that connect to this.
I set up the connection via the Airport Utility and updated the firmware to 7.5.2 and everything worked beautifully for the first ten days or so. All the Airport Express was doing was linking my stereo to itunes and playing music.
One morning though the orange light was flashing on the Airport Express and when I opened up the Airport Utility I got the message in the title. I have tried re-setting via the Airport Utility and pressing the button on the unit itself, but all to no avail, the same error comes up when I have re-set the equipment from the default. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get things running smoothly again please?
Lastly, as far as I am aware I can't use the airport express as a bridge for my Netgear router (as this only works for extending the range of an apple product) but please let me know if I'm wrong!
    Many thanks in advance!

An update for anyone who may have similar problems as this is now resolved for me. Largely by accident I found out the problem was actually with my main router as opposed to the Airport Express unit.
Can't explain why but unplugging the Netgear router from the power supply in the wall for five minutes or so (to do the vacuuming in this case!) and then plugging it back in and powering back up (this took some time (15 minutes or so) appeared to allow the router to sort what needed which IP address.
This happened about 2-3 weeks ago and everything has been running fine since. Please note that I did try and "soft" re-set the router by telling it to re-set via the settings you can alter using a web browser but this had no effect at the time.

  • My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi

Following a question solved on March 24 by LaPastenague, but gone bad again.
    Apple AirPort Time Capsule
I felt the need for a physical backup of my data, as I would not completely trust the different clouds. I use, and have used Dropbox for 4-5 years and are very satisfied with that, but I am still not sure if or when a political lunatic will shut off the internet.
I purchased the Apple AP Time Capsule 2T, because all my other stuff are Apple, and that it's wireless. My old backup is Maxtor 300 GB.
Since we stay 2-3 weeks on two locations, one in Norway and one in Sweden (two different countries) we must use Mobile Broadband 4G, cables or fibre connections are useless for us, and we don't have it up to the houses. I have one mini router for each country, we bring with us iPhones, iPads, iMac, Apple TV, APExpress. When we pass the boarder I change the mini router, and the system continues working perfect on the WiFi, except the APExpress that needs to be reconfigured,  but then it works.
The APTC was difficult to make working as it would not accept to be in an existing network, but with good help from the Apple Community, LaPastenague, with forcing the TC connect to the APE with Ethernet cable in bridge mode, ref "My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi" from March 24, the problem was solved and all gadgets worked together in a perfect harmony, until we changed location.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
I have a slight feeling that the two WiFi bands are making the trouble as during the configuration of the TC sometime the last figure 6 and 7 pops up, and that has something two do with the two different 2,4 and 5 GHZ bands
So, I am curious if you have any idea ?
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?

I can deal with the last question first and easily.
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?
Open the airport utility .. go to the disk tab and select erase.
When you select erase you will get mulitiple options.
Quick removes the file table but does not delete the files,, it takes 2min or less.
A Zero out data is the secure way,, by writing 0 ie low level drive format.
    It can take several hours..
7 pass will take a week.. not recommended..
35 pass erase is ridiculous.. it would take a month.. put an ax through the TC. It is quick and better.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
The fact that it did work and has now failed might point to faulty unit.
The only way to tell is reset it properly to factory and start over.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Generally having multiple wireless AP should not cause problems.. but it is better to set channels manually.. so it doesn't go beserk rotating channels.
Remember to keep all names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Sadly though the Apple routers have no logging now and no SNMP and almost nothing to help diagnose a problem, so if it continues .. take it back to apple.. they have given you no other method of fixing it.

  • Pages document "could not be read" bc. it "does not have a valid format"

The document in question was properly saved and Pages was not open when my computer hung as it was shutting down. MS Word would not quit or force-quit and I had to hard restart the computer. When I later tried to open this Pages document, which I had been working on before Word froze, Page would not open it and responded with the error message: "This document "document_name.pages" could not be read. This document does not have a valid format." When I looked at the document in question I noticed that its file size was 0KB. I have no idea why this happened, but I suppose it has to do with my computer not shutting down properly and perhaps with Word freezing. If I repair my drive permission, re-index it, anything, will it help? Just a note on the status of this machine: spotlight stopped working earlier this morning and I was waiting to finish this document before repairing disk permissions and trying to fix that issue with Spotlight.
In the meantime I have tried various fixes. First I tried to change the file ending to .zip, unpack it and open it. Then the same, but this time I tried to view package contents. It doesn't show up in the contextual menu as even having a package to show the contents of. The file is effectively empty, but I don't know where the contents went! The funny thing is that the MS Word doc was recovered automatically. Is it possible that Pages doesn't have an auto-recovery mechanism?
I need this file urgently, or at least the text in it. It is the bibliography of an important paper due tomorrow at 5 pm.Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I have used a file-recovery program in the past. It is called "Stellar Phoenix" and it worked wonderfully to find a Word doc that I accidentally deleted. It can't find .pages document though. In order to do so, I would need to tell the program what the average file size is, as well as the header information as follows. "Header (in hexadecimal)" "At Offset (in decimal)". I have no idea what this means, but if I could insert it, perhaps it could find the lost data. Should I have it search for .pages, .zip, .xml? I'm at a loss, but I know that it doesn't recognize .pages. In the meantime, I sent a support email to them and will see what happens.
    Thank you for your help.
    David

    I can't respond before.
When the system say that your file size is 0KB, it means that nothing was saved. Only a file descripto exists.
So, there is nothing to recover.
Given the time the system crashed, you may have :
    (1) a simple descriptor with nothing written
    (2) a folder with every or only some of the required files.
In this case, Phoenix is useless : it's unable to revive a folder.
    (3) a flatfile (a compressed version of the folder named above). It's only this kind of file which Phoenix may revive.
With a bit of luck, Phoenix would be able to revive the index.xml file which was in the original folder created in the temporary folder.
    This file starts with :
    <?xml version="1.0"?><sl:document xmlns:sfa="http://developer.apple.com/namespaces/sfa"
    or
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <sl:document xmlns:sfa="http://developer.apple.com/namespaces/sfa"
The minimal size for a Pages index.xml file is : 520038 bytes.
If you retrieve the index.xml file, we may try to rebuild an usable package.
Ask the recovery tool to transfer the recovered file on an other media.
If the document embedded pictures, the index will give their path and their size which may be useful to recover them.

  • The document could not be read: the document does not have a valid format.

I created a 10MB document in Pages about a week ago. Around that time, I reopened the document and edited it with no problems. A week later, I've tried to open the document but Pages gives me the following error:
The document "[Document Name].pages" could not be read. The document does not have a valid format.
I created, edited, and saved this document in Pages, so I am confused as to why Pages would be unable to re-open the file, especially as I haven't done anything to it since it worked last. I was worried that my hard drive might have corrupted the file so I ran diagnostic tests but everything was fine. I was also worried that because the file is synced with my iDisk that iDisk corrupted the file while syncing it or something but I don't know what I could do to check this. Either way, it's an important file and I need to open it: I thought that by putting it on iDisk I would have a copy in case something happened to my computer but this seems not to have helped (and maybe hurt!).
Any file recovery tools or other ways that I can open this file?

No, I don’t have Pages ’08 installed, but did in the past—is this a current issue?
    Pages ’09 is registered.
I have tried dragging the file onto the app icon directly.
To recover at least the text, I did the “rename as zip, open index.xml” trick. Of course, in order to interpret that file, you do have to understand XML (thank god I do)… but if I hadn’t, man that would’ve been a major bummer.

  • Time capsule does not appear in shared devices

All of the sudden my Time Capsule does not show up in the shared devices. It's all up to date, it is working fine as a router and internet connection works fine. It also show up in the airpot utility and the light is green however it does not show up on the shared devices so I cannot access the data folider anymore.
Furthermore Airport utility indicates that the disk is damaged but I cannot repair it because I cannot access it.
Any ideas? (beside doing a reset which I have already done)

That is bad.. the light should not be green unless you told the TC to ignore the problem.
A damaged disk has to be replaced.. if the SMART has gone off or is showing as bad or no capacity then you need to replace the disk (or if under warranty.. the whole TC).
    How old is the TC?
Model number from the base A1xxx helps.
You can try doing an erase from the airport utility if the disk shows up at all. But if SMART has gone off the disk will need replacement anyway.
If less than 1year return to apple for warranty replacement.. and if you have applecare on a computer it will cover the TC for up to 3years although the rules are strict.. so check.
See instructions for removal of the hard disk.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule_Model_A1302
Certainly if the TC is older than 3years.. it might be better to consider replacement. Certainly replacing a hard disk could be just short fix until the power supply also goes.

  • Time capsule does not appear in the finder.

My time capsule appears in airport utility. It is ready to go. I have it on ethernet because airport isn't a very powerful wireless router. The time capsule does not appear in the finder. It does not appear in the disc utility. It does not appear in time machine. The airport utility will do factory resets, get it ready for internet, whatever. The rest of my net work can not see it.
I have done the finder preferences. I have restarted the computer, jiggered the sharing preferences, done factory resets, tried to find sparce bundles and sparse bundles, reset the finder, force quit finder, tried to find finder plsts, trawled the discussion pages, tried to find server addresses and apple ids. Nothing seems to work.
Time capsule never seems to work as smoothly as it supposed to. I shudder to present my problems to apple support because I know that its a long road and will probably end in tears. But here I am, naked before this disappointing edifice.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

What is the make and model number of your modem?
I have a microwave modem on my roof. I don't think that has anything to do with this. I am not using my airport for a wireless router, only as a time capsule connected by ethernet. The Airport Utility calls my airport : Airport Extreme 802.11 ( 1st Generation )
Is the Time Capsule acting as your main router or is another device handling those services?
No, I have a lyncsis router. The wireless router function on airports doesn't seem to work very well. I don't think thats a problem with mine. My brothers have gone with lyncsis as well.
Was the Time Capsule visible in the Finder before, and is now "lost", or has it never appeared in the Finder?
It appeared on my previous laptop. That died. Now I have an imac. The airport has never appeared on the imac.
Thanks for trying to help so quickly

  • [SOLVED] pacman - package does not have a valid architecture

    Hello,
When I was trying to update my system recently, I ran into this problem:
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date
    community is up to date 0.0 B 0.00B/s 00:00 [----------------------] 0%
    multilib is up to date
    :: Starting full system upgrade...
error: failed to prepare transaction (package architecture is not valid)
:: package wine-1.7.17-1-i686 does not have a valid architecture
I tried clearing pacman's cache to see if that was the problem, but it didn't do anything. I haven't upgraded the system in over a week before this, and I've installed packages in the mean time without issues. I know that it's not just a wine issue - I tried installing some random packages but ran into the same issue.
The only thing I can think of that might have caused this would be archiso - I was trying to build a custom ISO but build.sh went wacky for some reason, and it seemed to be trying to install packages onto my system, not into the ISO.
EDIT: This problem seems to only affect packages in community and extra. Packages from core and multilib don't run into this problem.
SOLUTION: I think pacman's database files for community and extra got corrupted somehow. I just went into /var/lib/pacman, moved the sync folder to sync_old, then ran pacman -Sy, Everything seems to be good now.

Unless that's a typo or you immediately followed it by `pacman -Su` then everything is not good now.  Never run `pacman -Sy`.

  • File does not have a valid format

Hi. I just typed a document for around a half an hour and saved. I closed an reopened the document and it now says that the document does not have a valid format. I also saved it as a .doc and I got the same thing in pages and mac word. Is there any way I can recover the document?

    Michael
I have tackled this with all the applications at my disposal.
NeoOffice, OpenOffice and BBEdit will open the .doc file but the text is rubbish.
I think this file has been terminally corrupted. Can you remember if you did anything special when you saved it or if there was any glitch on your computer at the time?
All you can do is prepare for such eventualities in the future.
In preferences you can set that Pages saves a previous version when you save, at least that gives you something to go back to.
Sorry I couldn't give you any better news.

  • Internet Connection - Your Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP.

I just bought an Apple TimeCapsule and set it up normally, following instructions to my Arris cable network on the Videotron provider here in Quebec, Canada. The TimeCapsule did appear as a wireless device on my MacBook Pro (after updating the AirPort software from the provided CD - as was instructed). I went through the whole installation process to obtain at the end this error:
Internet Connection - Your Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP.
The only provided instructions were to check the cable and then contact your Internet provider. Well it seems clear to me that if I contact my provider and say that the internet connection works fine directly on my computer, also fine through my "normal" wireless router but not with my new TimeCapsule, I won't get much of a response.
After a lot of research, a friend indicated the solution in my case.
You have to really reset the cable modem to convince it to start giving out IPs again.
    To do this:
    1. Unplug your TimeCapsule (possibly you might have to reset to factory defaults - see the documentation)
    2. Unplug your cable modem
    3. Reset your cable modem by pressing the reset button with a pen (or something) for several seconds.
    4. Plug your cable modem back in and let it reboot/restart - until the lights are back on.
    5. Plug in your TimeCapsule
Everything should now work and you can restart your AirPort set-up on your Mac.
    Good luck!

My ISP is AOL.  The service is DSL via a broadband modem.  Somewhere during the setup process there appears to be a communicatiosn issue between the Airport Extreme Base Station and the DSL modem.  When I hook the DSL modem directly to my iMac I can connect to the internet without any issues.
I tried the factory reset and the DSL modem reboot process described in other posts and seemed very close to success...until the internet setup step.  That is where this issue first presented itself.

  • Saved keynote document could not be read. Error message says The document does not have a valid format.

Using Keynote '09 on an iMac OS 10.8.4. Two of my students saved a Keynote file then the next day when trying to open received an error message- The document "4b Molly.key" could not be read. The document does not have a valid format. The students are saving correctly. Any ideas how we can retrieve a working file? Why did this happen?

Just tagging on as I encounted this problem this morning.  I'm using Mavericks, on MBP (late 2013).
Have both Keynote 5 and 6 - tried to open the file in both, to no avail.   I have also tried the renaming of .key to .zip that seemed to work for others with previous OS, but does not fix now.  Also tried uploading to iCloud, renaming, redownloading - no fix there either.  I've tried to open on iPad and on a different user's iMac - again, get the same error.
It worked yesterday and the day before.  It is a large file; however, I realized that from last night to this morning the only different thing I did was that I inserted photos in the keynote deck by drag & drop verses Insert/Choose and wondering if this corrupted the file.
I'm going to hope a fix is out there somewhere and that I don't have to spend hours upon days upon weeks redoing this 98+ page deck.
    Any suggestions?

  • The document does not have a valid format.

I created a special format document when I had Pages '08. I needed the proportions of the document to match the special paper on which the document would be printed so I created a special size for my document rather than 8 1/2 x 11. If I remember right it was closer to 8 1/2 x 13 or so. Anyway, I have now upgraded to Pages '09 and can no longer open any of these special format documents. I have versions of a couple of the documents that were created in Pages '08 without the special proportional size page and they open without issue. However the special size documents all get "The document does not have a valid format" and will not open. I really NEED these documents. I have seen some posts about renaming to a .zip and then something about an index file but I don't understand where this index file might be and what good it will do to open it. Also I know the files exist because they are still showing their original file sizes (not 0 MB). Any assistance would be appreciated.
