Time capsule dont backup without cable?

hi
i know time capsule use wireless to connect to macbook pro ,in my first time backup i used cable so i disconnect the cable and try to connect with my time capsule no way? AirPort Utility did not find it my wireless also did not find my time capsule and the light is green but my macbook pro did not find it only when i connect the cable ? so thats mean i can use it as wireless backup ?

Hi Alexandra,
The article linked below details how to go about settings your Time Capsule up as a bridge, which effectively disables all routing functionality (NAT and DHCP services are disabled on the Time Capsule as they will be handled by your ISP's modem/router), and should allow you to utilize Time Machine without affecting your existing network.

  • How do I use my Time Capsule for backup without making it my router?

I've always used my Time Capsule as my internet router (paired with my Time Warner modem) and I've also used it to back up my computer.   I just got a new modem, it was a nightmare to set up, and it's supposed to have very fast internet.  It's a Time Warner modem / router.  In order to set this up and get a new wifi, I had to disconnect my Time Capsule.
Now I would like to connect my time capsule again to back up my computer, but to avoid messing with the internet or changing it again (I may as well try the new one), I DON'T want to continue using my TC as a router.   how do I go about doing this?  Do I continue to have it connect to the modem via ethernet or do I just plug it into the power source and that's it?
If someone could walk me through the process it would be so appreciated!

can i use time capsule to backup movies and see them wireless without redirecting my itunes library to the time capsule?

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

  • Time Machine "backup failed" Backing up to Time Capsule (first backup)

I just received my iMac (24", 3.04 ghz, 4 gig ram) a few days ago...my firs Mac, after over 20 years with pc's. All working fairly well, as I try to learn the new format. Attempted my first backup last night using Time Machine, backing to Time Capsule. As I went to bed, it stated it was "preparing". This morning it stated "backup failed". "Time Capsule error". The networking aspects of Time Capsule are working without a problem. Unfortunately, the error message is vague and I'm definitely illiterate when it comes to much of the properties of a Mac. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed in investigating the problem? Thanks!!

Well, I greatly appreciate the earlier advice. I have learned much in my reading. Of course, now with my "tinkering", I determined that the Time Capsule was not formatted to OS extended (journaled) as was my Macintosh harddrive. (Don't really understand why it would not come that way). I attempted to format using disk utility, now it doesn't show up in that application and under FINDER (shared devices), it is detailed as "sharepoint". I read elsewhere that it was recommended to use airport utility to reformat to OS Extended (journaled). Anyway, of course, now I've gone full circle and am comfused as to the proper way to have it formatted properly and recognized by disk utility. As such, currently I cannot use it for backup.
Frequently, I'm my worsed enemy! Thanks again for the advice.

  • Cannot access Time Capsule for backup, but wi-fi is fine

    Hi all,
from time to time, suddenly any Mac in my house is not able to connect to TimeCapsule, while wi-fi is working fine. I can access Airport utility and see and configure the hardware.
The only working solution is to switch off Time Capsule by unplugging power cable, then plug again.
Time Capsule wil allow again to reconnect and back up via time machine.
The log seems to show this message:

All the machines are running Mountain Lion at latest version.

Have you set up the TC with user accounts??
Most people just use the TC password..
I have done very little with user accounts on the TC.. it seems fundamentally wrong headed to me.. If you have a domain controller with everyone using accounts to login that is fine.. and the TC would then exist in connection to the domain controller.. but it is a home device and there is no function to all that.
What will happen if you change over to standard security or even turn on the guest account I am too scared to suggest as you may not easily get connection back again.. The TC certainly displays a warning going to accounts.. I am not sure of warnings going away from accounts.
If you didn't setup the TC, do you have admin access to it??
Perhaps I am assuming too much before you tell me everything. But I may suggest things you don't want to try.. unfortunately I cannot say this will work.. the issue is widespread across the Mountain Lion TC combo and I have yet to see Apple suggest a solution or even fess up there is a problem. Daily reboots are just simply now a part of the scene for all windows and Mac users.
Is the TC the main router for the network.. 1 hour is not default lease in the TC and very few people even know how to change it.. standard is 1day. I would consider 1hr adequately short for all arp tables to be kept up to date.. the computer should be seeking new lease at 30min.. ie half lease time.
If the TC is bridged an not controlling the network.. that can contribute to the issue.
Setting a static IP on the TC if it is bridged my help.

  • AirPort Time Capsule - wireless backups

I think I may have messed up the setup of my shiny new AirPort Time Capsule.
I had bought it to hide away in a corner, wirelessly backing up my Mac.
During setup I was unable to connect it to my household wifi network and to play around I ended up setting up a second wifi network from the ATC itself.
I followed the instructions wrt a Hard/Factory resets, but each time the original setup is copied back across from Airport Utility and I've not been able to start from scratch.
Having tried again whilst connected to my modem/router via ethernet I have been able to get a green light and perform a backup. Given the size of this the ethernet connection is appropriate?
For my future incremental backups, what steps do I need to take to be able to disconnect the ethernet cable and resituate the ATC elsewhere?
In Airport Utility, when Network Mode is set to 'Extend a wireless Network' no networks are listed of the several visible to the Mac, iPhone, iPad.
The ATC hasn't been ethernet connected directly to the Mac. The Mac isn't ethernet connected to the modem/router.

Should I interpret your comments that the ATC will always need to be connected to the Mac or the modem/router?
    As I said previously.....
As illustrated in the Time Capsule Setup Guide, the Time Capsule needs to connect to your your modem or modem/router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.
Permanent would mean just that.....a fixed wired connection at all times.
The only exception to this rule would be that if your "main" router....the one that provides your wireless network....is also another Apple wireless router.
So, unless you have another Apple router providng your main wireless network, the Time Capsule will need to connect using a permanent wired connection to your modem or modem/router at all times.
    I also said.....
Once you have the Time Capsule set up correctly, you can connect your Mac directly to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable for the first backup, since the data transfer will typically take place 4-5 times faster using a wired connection.
Once you have the first backup done, then you can switch to wireless on your Mac and back up that way, since each incremental backup should only take a few minutes.
    That should be pretty clear.
You don't have to connect your Mac to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet cable for the first backup, if you don't mind waiting 4-5 times longer for the first backup to occur, with greater chances of an error occuring during the process.
With a wired connection, the first backup might take a few hours. With a wireless connection, the first backup might take all day. Most users would opt for the faster and more reliable option, I would think.
The first Time Machine backup copies over everything on your Mac to the Time Capsule. After the first backup is done, Time Machine only backs up the changes that have occurred on your Mac since the previous backup.
These "incremental" backups should not involve copying a lot of data, so using wireless on your Mac to connect to the Time Capsule will work fine for this process.

new help with my mac air and airport extreme time capsule dont know how to save to time capsule and use as a external hd would like 2 store my home videos and pictures on the time machine (ONLY) as the MAC AIR has storage space limited space please help. THANK YOU.

See the info here about sharing or using the TC for data.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
It is extremely important you realise.. the Time Capsule was never designed for this.
It is a backup target for Time Machine.. that is the software on the computer that does backups.. it has no direct connection to the Time Capsule.
It has no ability to back itself up.. unlike all other NAS in the market. It is therefore likely one day you will lose all your files unless you seriously work out how to backup.
The TC is slow to spin up the hard disk and fast to spin down. iTunes and iPhoto will continually lose connection to their respective libraries.
iPhoto in particular is easy to corrupt when you move photos over wireless into the library.. once corrupted all is corrupt. A single photo will ruin it all.. so backup is utterly essential.
Time Machine cannot do backups of network drives. ie the TC. You will need a different backup software like CCC. You will then need another target to backup to..

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • Can I use the time capsule as backup and hard disk at the same time?

    Hi.
I want to buy a time capsule.
I wondered, if I can use the time capsule as backup (over time machine) and as a hard disk at the same time?
If I buy the 2TB time capsule, I wanted to use 1TB for the backup and 1TB for hard disk.
    Is this possible?
    Best wishes
    Sophie

It is not recommended.. the problem being anything stored on the TC only is not backed up and cannot be backed up by the TC itself or Time Machine. So what are you going to do about back.. the TC can and do die suddenly.. and the cost of recovery can be huge.
See Q3 here for the semi-right way to do it if you must.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
You can plug a USB drive into the TC and use that for files.. but note, its speed is poor.. fine for wireless as wireless is even slower but you will really notice it if you expect the drive to be as fast as the internal.. it will be a fraction of the internal drive speed. 1/2 write and 1/3 read aprox.

  • How to disconnect internet connection in Time Capsule and reconnect without restarting the whole device?

Hi, I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to disconnect internet connection in Time Capsule and reconnect without restarting the whole device?
The thing is that as I have a dynamic IP address, everytime I restart the internet connection my IP address changes. I sometimes need it to change, so I need to restart the connection. I don't know another way to restart the connection than restarting the whole Time Capsule.
    Thanks!!
PD: the computer I use is Windows based, using the Airport Utility for Windows, but I also have a MacBook Pro I could use and an iPhone too.

The utility in windows is very like Mac so the screenshots are from Mac as I don't have windows available now.
How this works depends on the setup of the TC.. which you did not tell us.. you cannot change anything if you do not have the TC as the main router in the network.
So on the internet tab you need to share a public IP address.
On the next tab where you set IP address.
    Click the renew IP address.
It might work.. and it might not.. the problem is you are not disconnecting the network.. sometimes the hard disconnection is required before the address will renew..
What about unplugging the WAN port.. then click renew the IP which will fail.. then plug the wan back in again.
In the end it is easier and faster to power cycle the TC.

  • Can i unplug time capsule from the ethernet cable and still use it??

can i unplug time capsule from the ethernet cable and still use it??

I have tried to extend that wireless line but as soon as i remove the LAN cable i have no internet connection anymore. So basically, does the TC get the signal wireless from the router??
The Time Capsule can wirelessly extend a wireless signal....but only if it is being provided by another Apple AirPort wireless router.
If the "main" rotuer there is not an Apple AirPort router,  you will need to connect to the network using a wired Ethernet connection.
