Time capsule download speeds are slow

iMac <======>Time capsule (bridge mode) <=====> 10/100 ethernet switch <====> Comcast router/modem Arris TG862
Multiple iDevices are wirelessly connected to Time capsule because Arris TG862 couldn't handle more than 10 wireless devices without kicking them off.
Time capsule is in bridge mode, 4th gen, 7.6.4.
Have been running this configuration for over a year and download speeds @ 50Mbs for the iMac that is wired to the time capsule and an iMac that is wirelessly connected to time capsule.  AppeTV is hardwired to 10/100 ethernet switch as well, and has never had a problem before download / streaming movies.
In the past week, the wired download speed of the iMac has crawled down to 5-6 Mbs.  Wireless connections are .5-1 Mbs.
I have unplugged all devices, waited 10 mins, plugged in router/modem, waited 5 mins, plugged in switch, waited 1 min, plugged in TC, waited 5 mins, ran a test on Speedtest.net - still getting 5 Mbs wired and slower on wifi.  If I unplug the ethernet cable from the TC (WAN) and plug it into the iMac directly, I get 57 Mbs download speed on Speedtest.net.  Why would the TC suddenly be slowing down download speeds.  In all configurations, the upload speed is still 10-11 Mbs.  It appears that only download speeds are affected.  Any suggestions?

Yes, I've tried moving the ethernet cable from the iMac to a different LAN port on the TC.  Same slow speed.  The wireless download speeds are slow too, seems like the WAN connection is "throttling" download speeds no matter if it's wired or wireless.
I have pressed the reset button on the back of the TC until the front light blinks amber.  Then I went thru the setup to have it connected Ethernet, Bridge mode, create a wireless network, and DHCP from the router.  I got 12 Mbs download speed for the wired connection after doing this the first time.  Fifteen minutes later I tested it again using Speedtest.net and the download speed for the wired connection had fallen to 5 Mbs.  I unplugged the TC, waited a half hour, held the reset button down while I plugged it in, went thru the setup again, and still had a download speed of only 4 Mbs when I was done.
I assumed if the switch on the TC went bad that it wouldn't work at all, not just be slow.
Any other suggestions?

My dualband TC is only capable of giving me 70-80 Mbit/s of the 120 Mbit/s I'm getting from my provider. I've upgraded to CAT6 cables but that didn't gave me anything more up till now.
My WAN connection is set to automatic in the TC settings. Would it help if I choose for 1000 Full duplex manual??? Can test this soon enough but did anyone have similar problems with WAN Speed?
I have quite some port forwards to my Mailserver and stuff. I tried with factory defaults TC and that gave me only one test with around a peak of 100 Mbit/s on a rare occasion.
Up till now happy TC user but this is strange with everything on Gigabit ports you would expect more of the hardware... Also the reference to 400 Mbit/s on the WAN for an AEB would suggest more from a TC wouldn't it??

SLOW download on Airport Extreme wifi.  Wired is great.  The download speeds are next to nothing above 25 feet away.  When i stand next to the AEB it is fine.  Anyone know why?  Doubt ill get another AEB, very unreliable and has been for some time.

No cordless phone (two iPhones and two iPads though).  It does have one or two walls on line of sight.  A few wireless door security zones.  And a large china cabinet that my wife sure wouldn't let me move.  Do any of these sound significant enough to drop the dowload from 30Gb to .1GB...while upload stays consistent.  I have had better signal strength through two walls 100 feet out from my house, havent tried recently though.  I am suddenly aware as my switch is acting up and i had to use wifi on my xbox.

  • Time Capsule Disk is very slow

    Hello,
I'm using 10.8.2 and I just bought a Time Capsule 2TB for my backups.
I have tried to use Time Machine to backup my data (about 200GB) via our wifi network. My MBP (Retina mid 2012) stands at a distance of 2 meters from the Time Capsule.
It took about 16 hours and at 90% it crashed.
After that I used Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my data manually. I think I will go on with this methode, because I will have instant access to my data.
CCC did the backup a bit faster (about 12-13 hours). Copying other files to the Time Capsule Disk is also slow (about 7-8 GB per hour). Navigating is also slow.
I turned off Spotlight completely without a difference in copying speed.
I think (and I hope) this Time Capsule disk could be faster. Is this a bug? Are there workarounds?
    Thanks a lot!

-To sum up things: The setting "DHCP + NAT" delivers fast copying speeds
Yes. You will eliminate the backroute to the fiber modem or maybe even back to your ISP - depending on their setup.
The standard setting of the router is "DHCP + NAT" right?
Normally the standard setting is good enough to obtain an internet connection instantly (without filling in IP, DNS etc. manually).
Yes, you shoudl not have to fill in those details. Should work straight away as your MBP gets thos edetails automatically (yes?)
best to reset the Airport Extreme to defaults and connect it again using DHCP / NAT

  • Download speed will slow to nothing. Must continually manually pause and resume to force the connection to the download to complete. How to fix?

Have recently tried to download multiple files from multiple locations. These files will show up as downloading in the download manager. After 5-10 seconds, the download will slow to a crawl. In the window for the download manager, it will state that the download still has a download speed. When reviewing the time and progress, as well as monitoring my actual inbound/outbound internet traffic, I can conclude the download does not have any actual download speed remaining (that is, 0 kilobytes/sec).
To complete the download, I must manually click on the file being downloaded, force it to pause and then force it to resume. This will cause the download to actually download again for about 5-10 seconds before the download manager states that the download speed is slowing down (when in fact it goes back to 0 kilobytes/sec). This process must be repeated until the file is fully downloaded.
Also observed is that there will suddenly be more of a connection, downloading just a bit of the file, before going back to 0 kbps. This will happen every so often and is much slower than manually pausing/resuming. If left to its own devices for long, it also has a chance that it will decide that the file is complete and report that it has the full file size of the download. Review of the actual downloaded file shows that the file is incomplete for the supposed size of the download.
This should not be an issue with internet usage. There is no inbound/outbound traffic for my connection when the download speeds hit 0kbps. Loading webpages during this time load fine, only the download is unstable.

Problem Solved!!! :) No need Of Any AntiVirus !
Got back into '''Firefox 5.0.1''' !!
    Its Working Great!

  • Download speeds very slow

I've seen many other threads on slow download speeds, however most of those were last summer/fall after people upgraded to Lion.  I bought a new iMac with Lion preinstalled (last summer) and have not had issues with download speeds until that last month or two.  I believe the issue started with the Feb 1, 2012 system upgrade to 10.7.3.  The iMac started to intermittently drop the wifi network.  At this point the download speeds were also significantly slower.  There was a patch that more or less fixed the dropping issue, however the download speeds are still awful.  It still occasionally drops the wifi network, but not as often as before.
I've tried a few things to troubleshoot.
    1) I have a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard and I'm able to download a 2GB file in about 25 minutes wirelessly.  On the iMac it estimates over 2 hours but takes longer.
    2) I checked the firmware on my Qwest Actiontec modem, and it's up to date.
    3) when I plug my iMac directly into the modem with an ethernet cable it's able to download the 2GB file in about 25 minutes.
Thoughts on how to resolve this?
    Thanks!

  • Just installed new Time Capsule, wifi now very slow, what amI doing wrong?

Just installed new Time Capsule, wifi now very slow, what am I doing wrong?

It's possible the reason it seems so slow, is that a backup might be in progress - and since it's the first backup everything on the disk is something that Time Machine is backing up and is being transferred across the WiFi at the same time as you're trying to use your Internet. So you're competing with Time Machine data flying across your WiFi along with your internet stuff. So if this is indeed what is happening (look at Time Machine to see if a backup is in progress), either pause the backup to a more convienent time or live with the slowness till the backup is done this first time, and after that you probably will not notice the "competition" on your WiFi. I like to schedule the Time Machine backups to late at night rather than once an hour (the default), but that schedule should be whatever you feel most comfortable with.
There is a handy free utility called "TimeMachine Editor" that you can get from http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/ that lets you create your own customized backup schedule. You can create several schedules to fit your working conditions. I've used it for several years with never a problem. I don't have anything to do with the company - just a happy user.
    Good luck...

  • Apple TV 2 Download Speeds Very Slow

I am using an Airport Extreme with ATV2.  My ethernet connected download speeds are very fast yet my apple tv (and my other IOS devices  - ipads) struggles to download movies from itunes.   Most recently it showed over 2 hours to download a rented movie from itunes.
All equipment is updated with the latest software.
Any ideas about how I can see what the download speed is on my Apple TV?
Any thoughts on how I might be able to fix the problem wiht my apple TV

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • TS1398 Why Wireless Download Speeds so Slow?

My iPad 3, MacBookPro and Apple TV have been suffering with poor connection speeds lately. Connect the MacBook to the Internet using Ethernet and it works fine. Here's the funny thing, when I run speedtest from either device, my download speed is horrible, but the upload speed is normal for my ISP.
I'm suppose to get 10 down and 1 up. This data below is from the speedtest app on the iPad. As you can see, I don't run this app too often. What it does show the horrible numbers.
I've ruled out my ISP. I don't have another wireless router to check against, but before I go out and spend another hundred, I thought I would check if anyone else is experiencing this type of issue. NetGear, my router manufacture claims since the release of iOS 6, user have been experiencing connection issues.
If anyone at least can offer maybe additional tests, router settings, etc., I would greatly appreciate it.

You use 3g wifi with your computer? I don't think so. I'm not saying it isn't possible; I just doubt it's the case since that basically means you have your computer tethered to a cell phone. If that is the case, let me know.
If you're getting the same speed whether you're using wifi or ethernet, it's because your download speeds are bottlenecked at/throttled by your ISP, not your in-home hardware.

  • Help! Play store download speeds are extremely slow

Hey guys, I just got my galaxy s4 a couple of days ago and I am just encountering a new problem. When I try to download an app from the play store it takes FOREVER to download it, I'm talking 10kb/s. Does anyone know of this problem and a solution for it? Thanks a ton!

        Good morning tony12345,
Let's speed things up for you! Your Galaxy S4 is capable of much faster downloading speeds. Ensure that LTE/CDMA is selected http://vz.to/18J32hS and make sure to disable WiFi. Also confirm your coverage signal http://bit.ly/qQR9lM as low speeds are normal for areas with extended coverage.

  • Download speeds are very slow but speed test is fi...

Hi, I did a speed test which returned a result of 36mb down and 8mb up so didn't really expect a slow download. I started a download on the iplayer which normally downloads at 28-30mb per second but it didn't get above 4mb which is not good.
    Anyone experiencing slow download speeds?

Speeds have gone back up to 21mb on the iplayer. Much better but still slower than usual.
When you get used to the fast speeds of Infinity, anything slower is immediately frustrating. Like having to go back to using my Pentium 75Mhz with windows 95.......horror

  • Time Capsule connection is very slow on windows 8

Time Capsule wireless connection  is very slow on a Samsung windows 8 computer.
Any advice? It is placed next to my mac and the speed is 20% less (often more)
If I move the computer into the livingroom (about 10 meter) the speed is reduced with 95%.

Windows 8 drivers are still developing.. download the drivers from the wireless manufacturer not Samsung and try it.
I am not surprised though at differences between wireless.. card using different chipsets and different antennas will give totally different results.
But you can help a bit.. setup the TC with SMB names.. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Set the name for 5ghz different to 2.4ghz so you can change over.
Set the security to WPA2 Personal which is the only one suitable for N wireless at home without a server.
Set 2.4ghz to manual radio channels and test, channel 1, 6, 11 in turn.
Try up close using 5ghz as it is faster.. but to get full speed you need a broadcom 450mbps card..
Remember wireless chipset like atheros and broadcom never quite see eye to eye.. it is one reason you buy the same brand.
Solution.. buy a cheap edimax wireless router.. plug it into the TC and use it for wap only.. I just did this for a friend.. works much better than TC or airport extreme on a PC. But I have not used win8 yet.. no idea if that is going to be problematic.

  • Time Capsule/Airport is very slow...

Just bought a new 1TB Time Capsule. I replaced my old G router, set it all up in Airport Utility and Time Machine. My network consists of two MacBook Pros, a silver-door G4, and an Apple TV. I'm using the WPA Personal security - the one that requires 13 characters. I'm having two problems...
    1) The performance of my network seems significantly slower than it was with my old Linksys router. Web pages access seems slower, and now a movie that should take only 30-40 minutes to download into Apple TV is now going to take 5 hours?
    2) Because I'm going to back up three computers, I decided to only set one to do it's first big backup at a time. I set it (the G4) to start a backup when I went to bed, and when I got up only 3 gigs had been backed up.
Although I wasn't expecting lightning, I did expect the performance between the Time Capsule and the MacBook Pros to be faster. And is the backup really supposed to be that slow? I could be waiting over a week or more to get my first computer totally backed up. Am I missing something?
    Bill

Forgive the size of the post, but the suggestions below have helped others with similar issues. Try each topic individually and see if things improve, If not move on to the next one.
    *Keep the Time Capsule Cool*
Some posters have observed that when they positioned the Time Capsule for better ventilation and cooling, their network connectivity issues resolved themselves. Also avoid locating the devise within poorly ventilated cabinets or piling items around or on top of it.
    *Time Capsule Orientation*
While the location you chose to setup your Time Capsule may be acceptable, but the direction it is oriented can have an effect on signal strength. It appears that the signal of the Time Capsule does not radiate equally from all sides of the devise.
The antennas within the devise are positioned along the 3 smooth sides. That is, there is no antenna on the side bearing the ports and cables. As a result, position the devise with the ports and cables AWAY from the direction of most of the clients that will be connecting to it.
    *Cordless Phones*
Some users have discovered that the cordless phones they have in the home occupy or are near the same bandwidth as their wireless network (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz). Try temporarily disabling the handsets and their bases and see if network connectivity improves. If so you may need to change the channel that the phone uses or purchase phones that occupy a different bandwidth.
    *Preferred Networks & Airport Services*
You may be experiencing interference from other networks in your neighborhood. When you click the Airport menu are there other networks listed other than your own?
If so, is your network at the top of the list? It should be.
Go to System Preferences --> Network --> Select Airport on the left.
Click "Advanced". In the “Airport” tab note the various local wireless networks that Airport detects. Is the network you prefer to connect to at the top of the list? If not drag it to the top. Are there other networks you never intend to connect to (an old work network, or a neighbors network)? Then highlight them and click the "-" button.
Make sure “Remember any network this computer has joined” is checked.
    Click "OK".
For "Network Name" be sure your network is selected and then click "Apply".
Is Airport (wireless) your primary means of connecting to your network? Is so, is Airport at the top of the list of services on the left? It should be.
Click the small “Gear” button at the bottom of the window and select “Set Service Order”.
Now drag Airport to the top of the list.
    Click “OK”. Click “Apply”.
Now see if network connectivity has improved.
    *Transmit Power & Wide Channels*
If you are using the 802.11n only (5GHz) radio mode, you can also select to use wide channels, which provide higher data throughput in your network.
    Launch Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the “Wireless” tab.
Click “Wireless Options...” at the bottom of the window.
Adjust the “Transmit Power” to 100%.
Put a check mark in the box labeled “Use Wide Channels”. (If you are using a 802.11a/b/g (2.4GHz) radio mode then select “Interference Robustness”)
    Click “Done”.
Click “Update” in the lower right hand corner.
Wait for the Time Capsule to restart and then see if your network speeds improve.
    *Reduce the DHCP Lease Time*
Some have found that reducing the DHCP lease time improves their network connectivity.
    Launch Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
Click “Internet” at the top of the window.
    Select the “DHCP” tab.
Change “DHCP Lease” to a shorter time.
Click “Update” in the lower right hand corner.
Wait for the Time Capsule to restart and then see if your network improves.
Let us know if any of these suggestions improve your situation.

  • Airport time capsule inconsistent speeds?

I installed airport time capsule last week and it was great, but suddenly my speeds are very inconsistent. is there something i can do to fix that? my tests at speedtest.net were getting 55 download and 10 upload regularly, but now they're anywhere from 5 download and 1 upload to 35 down and 8 up. I'm very puzzled. all via wifi. Apple doesn't say i need any firmware updates so I think i'm good there?

Please plug in by ethernet and try it. You need to determine if the issue is wireless, or your modem or your ISP. If the same effect on ethernet (with wireless turned off on the computer) the issue is more likely ISP.. plug directly into the modem bypassing the TC and see what gives.. You normally need to power cycle the modem for this to work.
If the ISP and modem are fine..
TC wireless only fails.. redo the setup of the wireless.. test with fixed channels.. test each in turn.
Use a wireless analysis type product to see if the problem is interference. eg istumbler..
Do you have other devices to check with, to see if it is that computer and not the TC.
If the wireless and ethernet both suffer the slow down.. but modem direct is fine.. then reset the TC and redo the setup from scratch. See if it fixes it.. if not your TC has a fault and should be returned for testing to Apple.

  • Time Capsule Bandwidth Speed versus Fios Router Directly

Verizon just replaced my Fios Router because download speeds were 5 megs/sec. I just received my new one in the mail and hooked it up. I connected to the FIOS router and was getting 27 mbps download and 5 on the upload. I went back to my original setup of turning off the Radio broadcast on the FIOS router and using my time capsule to broadcast wifi....i have dropped to 5 mbps download speed--same speeds when Verizon thought it was their problem. What do I do? I don't understand the limitations or what has happened. Can someone provide suggestions?

Bridge means to remove all routing from the TC.
Open Manual setup in airport utility (on lion v5.6 utility only).
    Go to internet tab.
    Go to Connection sharing.
Select off, bridge mode.. update the TC.. it is now bridge.
If still slow there are a number if issues.. and I doubt we have found the ultimate cause.. bad firmware in 7.6 could be one of them .. go back to 7.5.2
ie in airport utility go to the firmware update but hold down the option key and you can select older firmware.. they work better than new ones.
You also might need to reset the TC to factory to get rid of the poor settings.
