Time Capsule Drive Partitioning / Backing Up 4 Different Macs, 3 iPhones

Just purchased a refurbished 2Gb Time Capsule. While I've been using Time Machine on 2 iMacs and 2 PowerBooks (1 each of Intel & PPC), I would like to use the Time Capsule to take over the duties.
I'm also about to purchase an AppleTV. As the equipment we own is oldish (256Gb and smaller drives), I don't want to waste space to what could be several decades of backup. So here are my questions.
Running under Leopard 10.5.8:
[1] Does the MacOS automatically allocate space for each Mac (and iPhone) or do I need to partition the drive for each one?
[2] I'm not clear on how the new AppleTV (sans drive version) can make use of the Time Capsule's hard drive. Can I play from the TC? Can I stream to it from the AppleTV?

No, and you can't partition the TC's internal drive.
Time Machine will make a separate container, a +sparse bundle disk image,+ for each Mac's backups. They'll all coexist on the TC and compete for the same space.
I don't have an iPhone, so don't know how their backups work.

  • Time Capsule--can I back up Two different Laptops on the Time Capsule?

It's just about that easy. I just got the Time Capsule. I backed up my MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to use the same Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook. Can this be done? If so, how? I keep getting the failed message from the Time Machine Backup.
    Thanks for the help.
    Dave

No question that it can be done. I just got a new MacBook a couple of weeks ago and I am backing it up to our TC alongside my son who has been using it since last Sept. with his MacBook. There was no problem setting it up. I just clicked on TimeMachine in the Dock and it asked me where I wanted to back my files up to. The only choice was the existing Time Capsule. I clicked and away it went. I took the advice of others and connected my Mac directly to the TC for the initial backup instead of relying on the wireless. It only took a couple of hours.
What specific error do you get?

  • Can i use 2 time capsule for the back of the same Mac computer, for improve the security of the data store

I will save my data in 2 time capsule at the same time for improve data security

Mountain Lion added this ability.. it doesn't do two backups at the same time but each time it backs up it uses the alternative location.
Under Lion you can manually set it to use a different target.. this isn't difficult but you must do it.

  • Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partition?

Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.

Read carefully the speed of the USB drive plugged into the TC.

  • Can time capsule be partitioned so as to back up osx with time machine and bootcamped windows drive with win 7 ulyimate

have imac 27 inch.   I plan to bootcamp the drive and install win 7 ultimate to run AutoCAD. I want to backup the imac using time machine and the boot camped drive to one device.  Can time capsule be partitioned to use time machine for osx and win 7 backup for bootcamp drive.

You cannot backup a Windows partition or system using Time Machine. Nor can you partition a TC as far as I know although Airport Utility may allow that now. See:
A  whole  lot  about  Time  Machine for help with TM problems.  Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM.  See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
Of course you should carefully read the documentation that came with your TC to find out what options are available.

Time Capsule. Can I back up 2 different macs? What do I have to do.
I want to be able to back up 2 mac. Both have about 70gs of stuff and I have a 1 tb drive. So that should be no problem. I have the time capsule already set-up wireless.
Do I have to make 2 folders? One for each computer? If so how do I do this.
    Any help would be great.
I just do want to have to do a restore and get all of my daughters stuff on my mac.
    Thanks

Just set them both up, via #Q1 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Time Machine will make a separate +sparse bundle disk image+ for each Mac's backups.
As noted, it will be much faster to do the initial setup and first backup while connected via Ethernet, if at all possible. So your best bet will be to set up one, and let it's first backup complete, before setting-up the second.

  • Time machine, time capsule and multiple back up drives

ok--I'm a little dumb, so please bear with me:
Been using Time Machine for months using a WD 320 gig drive. Bought Time Capsule, when they came out and have been wirelessly backing up my Macbook Air ever since.
Had the bright idea today to plug the WD usb drive in and use time machine for the first time since March, as a redundant backup--it worked fine.
When I got home tonight, I switched the hard drive from the WD 320 gig to the Time Capsule drive, and later noticed was doing it's usual thing, backing up automatically with time capsule and time machine. But then I realized that it was doing a complete backup--not just an update.
When I entered time machine, all my backups were gone.
Have I lost all the backups I made since March?
Can you only back up to one hard drive?
Did I delete all my backups without even getting a warning that that would happen?
    Really?
My Time Capsule shows that I am using 120 gigs, but I can't account for 80 of those gigs...
    I hope this makes sense...
    thanks so much either way,
    andre
Did I lose months of backups by changing my

...even so, its odd that without your authentication information that the files in the FileVault image would be accessible and actively copied to another location...it appears to defeat the purpose of FileVault

  • Time Capsule won't back-up my new hard drive

I added a new hard drive to the drives I want Time Capsule to back-up. I get an error message that says "reformat required (case sensitive disk)" when I try to add the new drive. When I exclude this drive from back-up the error message goes away, but Time Capsule doesn't back-up the disk. How do I fix that?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
The problem is, a case-sensitive disk cannot be backed-up to a case-ignorant one.
Case-sensitive disks are rare in OSX; where did you get it or why did you set it up that way? Does it have to be case-senstive? If not, do you still have the originals of the data you put on it?
If you're not sure what case-sensitive is, see the pink box in #5 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

Sorry we are unclear as to the external hard drive and its connection to the TC..
For instance the light that blinks.. is that the TC or external hard disk or what.
Did you try just rebooting / restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router / TC.. external drive.. clients with 2min gap between each.
Are you actually running Snow Leopard as the profile states?
    How old is the TC?

  • Time capsule will not back up my iMac since I replaced the hard drive

I replaced the hard drive in my iMac, now time machine won't back up to time capsule because there is not enough space. I believe time machine/time capsule thinks the new hard drive is a new computer and therefore must perform a new complete backup even though the data on the new hard drive came directly off the old hard drive (the was backed up on time capsule. Our time capsule is currently backing up two computers (both Macs). How do I get time capsule to start backing up the new hard drive?

You'll have to be more specific -- that's like emailing an auto mechanic saying only "My car won't start."
    Has it ever worked?
Does your Mac recognize your Time Capsule?
    Do backups start?
If so, do they hang, or fail?  If they fail, with what message?
Start with Time Machine - Troubleshooting.   It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup, what you've done, and the results.

  • How to access Time Capsule drives behind DSL Router over WAN

    Hello everyone,
I have an older Time capsule(with USB Drive) connected to my Hitron CGN3 DSL wireless router over ethernet.
I have turned off the wireless functionality of the TC since the router seems to be much faster on Speedtest.net.
I have my TC and attached USB drive setup to share over WAN but am getting a Double NAT error.
It doesn't seem like I can turn off NAT on my Router.
I can't run the TC in bridge mode because it will remove the Share over WAN option for the TC and Drive.
Is it possible to setup the TC and attached USB drive to the router, without wireless on, so that I can access the TC and drive over the internet?
Any help would be soooooo apreciated!!!
    Thanks!
    Ian

Does anyone know why my Time Capsule drive sharing needs to be set to disk password?
You can set the TC disks to user accounts.. at least you can on older TC with older airport utility.. but there are consequences which you discovered.
If you set accounts.. you will have major issue with the existing files.. they will all disappear.
The old v5 utility gives you this warning.. which somehow Apple forgot on new version.
It actually makes all the present files disappear for all users. The warning just doesn't go far enough. You do this on a blank TC.. and of course the USB drive is just the same.. you cannot use different settings on that to the TC internal drive. So offload all your files.. create accounts on a bare TC.. load the files back into the correct user profiles.
In the end you probably want more flexibility than a TC is designed for.. buy something designed for remote access.. WD MyCloud.. it is hugely superior.
Also. . .  I am trying some File manager apps for my iPhone in hopes that i can connect to the same drive with it.  So far no luck with the free versions of FileBrowser Lite or File Explorer Free.
Most are SMB based.. not AFP.. Apple offer only two protocols.. SMB and AFP. But no responsible ISP allows SMB over the internet. The flood of files from hacked windows machines would bring the internet to a grinding halt.
People do get around it.. you can use filebrowser for instance by opening SMB to the outside world on a non-standard port.
    See http://www.stratospherix.com/support/gsw_timecapsule.php?page=6remote
But this is incredibly risky.. there is very poor security and it is not a great idea. The AFP security is much better than SMB.
If you want security use something other than TC.. any real NAS that offers VPN access for instance. The cost of a WD MyCloud is very reasonable when you look at the flexibility of the design. But any decent NAS will offer real remote access.. not Apple's limited pretend version.

  • Time capsule no longer backing up after 10.6 upgrade

After upgrading to OSX10.6 my time machine (through time capsule) is not backing up anymore. I can connect to the disk through finder and also through the time machine application. I can also see my backups from 10.5 and there are no issues with the wireless or router.
During attempted hourly backup the error message is:
The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Latest successful backup: 27/09/2009 at 15:29
it seems that i am not alone in this post OSX10.6 problem but have not found any solution yet - anyone help?

Just thought i would update after finally resolving this.
Tried many things after trawling the internet, eventually including reformat.
Established it was an error 11 via 'TM error log' and final solution was to change the names of one of my hard drives which had a '-' and a '/' in it.
These names had not caused any problems for 6 months under 10.5 but seem to be the issue under 10.6......
Time Machine has done a full backup and regular hourly ones for the last 2 days
still having a couple of spurious issues with 10.6, cannot force a shutdown from my account if my wife is logged in - i have to log her account out before i can shut down.

  • Use time capsule drive for mass storage instead of time machine

I'm considering buying a new Airport Extreme with the time capsule drive.  I'd interested to know if I can use the built in drive as an additional HD verses using it for a back up drive with time machine?  I'm aware I can plug in a USB external drive for network storage, but would like to use the built one for storage as well.  Anyone know if this is possible?

I just got a 2TB time capsule a few days ago to use as a "poor man's file server" for my iTunes library. Bob makes valid points, and I am aware of the limitations, but I think it will meet my needs for awhile. I am in the process of ripping a large DVD collection and my iTunes library is over 350gb which was starting to feel crowded on my MBA's 512gb SSD.
I have plenty of external USB and thunderbolt drives, but I wanted wireless access to the libary anywhere in the house. With the AC wireless on my 2013 MBA, I wouldn't really classify the time capsule as "quite slow", I'm seeing about 30MB/s for FInder file copies. I have a 1TB USB2 WD Passport drive and the speed is very comparable - about 35MB/s. Sure, it's not as fast as my thunderbolt drive at 190MB/s or SSD at 700MB/s, but it seems to work well for my content (I don't use HD video in iTunes).
The only noticeable issue is that the TC disk spins down almost immediately if it isn't in use, so you get a lag of a few seconds if you pause a movie for a minute. And it takes longer to start iTunes of course. For me, these were acceptable trade-offs to allow my library to grow to 2TB without any directly connected external storage.
I wanted an AC router regardless and the TC gives me a wireless disk for $100 more. In the future I can always add a "real" media server and let the TC do backups. But for now I'm happy with the way it works.

  • HT1178 I bought Time Capsule specifically to back up my computer at work. Only my computer. I completed the steps the best of my knowledge but I got the message, "This device & its network services will be temporarily unavailable. Are you sure you want to

I bought Time Capsule specifically to back up my computer at work. Only my computer. There are many computers within my department. I completed the steps the best of my knowledge but was unsure of which option to click. I clicked "I want to create a new wireless network". At the onset the instructions said I needed to connect with an ethernet cable, which I did. But I have no desire to connect to the internet, print from it, or have others access. I did deselect guest options, and I did put in passwords. But at the end of the process I got the message, "This device & its network services will be temporarily unavailable. Are you sure you want to continue."
I was worried this would shut me down and I wouldn't be able to continue to work. I don't necessarily need to connect wirelessly. It is connected via ethernet cable from machine to device.
Can you advise me how to continue? Did I choose the wrong options?

I bought an external hard drive called "Seagate Backup Plus" From the Apple store to back up everything on my computer and anything new on my computer. It came with Time Machine. The external hard drive disk had 1 or 2 Terabytes. Time Machine says "next backup: When disk is connected." "Oldest backup: July 2, 2014." & Also "Latest back July, 2."

  • My time capsule is not backing up my macbook.  Password issue.  My other mac mini connected wirelessly works fine and backsup correctly.

My Time capsule is is backing up my Mac Mini just fine, however, my Macbook keeps asking me for the password and it does not like any of the passwords I use.  I have since used a pen to reset my Time Capsule and it reset all the network passwords for all 11 devices I had linked to it, however, it did not resolve the issue of my backup issue.  Ironically, the macbook still connects wirelessly with my macbook so I can surf the web with it, however, it does not backup on that same device because it must have a different password... Not sure what to do since my Mac Mini is backing up successfully.  I must have chosen a different password and it saved to that device, is there a way to display the Time Capsule password on my mac mini so I can attemp to use that on my macbook?

What is the current setting of the TC disk access? It has three main levels, device password, disk password and user names and passwords. If you have it set to the last you will need to create a new username and password for the MacBook or recover what you were using.
Have you ever done a backup to the TC via the MacBook?
    What OS does it run?
The default password if you did not set anything is public.
Try manually mounting the TC disk on the MacBook and see if that allows TM to find it.
There is a lot of useful setup and troubleshooting info here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I would install the widget.. A1 and do a full reset of TM in the laptop, A4. As well as verify if you have already done a backup.. A5.
Basic setup of TC for TM is explained here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Recovery of passwords is possible but should not be necessary.
