Time capsule drives won't wake up
I have a TC bought less than a year ago, with software version 7.6.1. As of right now, I can click on the TC in the Finder to display the internal and external drives which I know are connected, but they never show up. (Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro BTW). Connected via Wifi successfully all the time.
Likewise the Time Machine process is stuck - shows an exclamation mark in the menu bar.
Solution 1: Reboot, this works for a day or so, then back to the above problem.
Solution 2: I reset the TC from scratch, so back to factory settings, and then set it up again. This worked for a couple of weeks.
So the problem is recurring, and I see someone else in 2009 had the same problem but no solution posted.
Any help appreciated, Bill.
It is a very difficult issue..
It has been ongoing since 7.6 firmware.. the issue hardly happens with 7.5 version.. the trouble is, I doubt your TC can be downgraded to that earlier firmware.
If you have applecare ring Apple and see if they can suggest a solution..
I would almost suggest for the moment the only way is a mechanical / electronic timer that reboots the TC at midnight every night. Crude but we were hoping Mountain Lion would fix several outstanding issues between TC and Lion.. it seems to have got worse.. much worse by the number of posts.

Time capsule drive and external drive won't wake up
I have a time capsule purchased in August (2TB) and a 2 TB WD MyBook external drive plugged into the usb slot on the time capsule. Given my computer is a laptop, it is nice to be able to put the external drive somewhere where it doesn't have to be plugged and unplugged with laptop use. The WD external drive houses my itunes library and is pretty sensitive and loses data whenever not powered down cleanly.
The problem:
Time Capsule drive and WD drive seem to go away and not allow me to access them no matter what I try. The only way to get them responding is to pull the power plug on the time capsule and power back on. This needs to occur each time I want to access either drive. When attempting to connect via finder I get connection failed errors.
I have no connectivity problems with airport. Access to network is fine, so I know the TC is not totally dead, just the part that lets me access the hard drives. It is interesting that time machine appears to be able to access the drive on the tc without problem but I'm not sure how confident I am that this is true just because it is telling me so.
Any suggestions? anyone else seeing this?I am having this issue as well.
The behavior seems to be that the drives are available after a reboot and for some time afterwards. Then at some indeterminate time, the drives become unavailable. The Time Machine backups stop with a "Backup Delayed" message and I have to go to the Time Capsule and reboot it by removing the power and re-inserting it.
When the drives are unavailable, the wireless router functions are still active since I use this router as my gateway to the internet. -
Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.
The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.

Read carefully the speed of the USB drive plugged into the TC. -
Time Capsule drive has corrupted banded Time Machine file(s)
So my internal HD died a few days ago. I get a new HD and I go to recover my files using Time Machine from my Time Capsule drive, and it hangs on every attempt. Something with the Time Capsule drive itself is busted.
The sparsebundle file is 220gb in size and contains 28,000 banded files. Trying to copy it off of the Time Capsule results in a consistent hang. I went into the sparsebundle and copied off every individual banded file except one, and any attempt to copy that file from the drive will hang the Capsule and force me to reboot it.
Apparently Time Machine will not work if just one of these banded files is broken or out of place. Despite the fact that I recovered nearly all the data, it is currently unusable. I need some serious help.
My hope is there is some workaround I can do to get at least most of my data back. It is unacceptable that Apple would sell Time Capsule and advertise it as being a way to safely back up data, then have it corrupt my data 4 months after I bought it. This data is of course priceless to me, and its worth far more than the drive, my macs, or pretty much all the Apple hardware I've bought in my lifetime. So I really need an experienced person from Apple to help me out and figure out how I can recover my data.
Thanks to anyone who can do this.
RichardSo after alot of time, disk utility reports that the corrupt sparsebundle has no errors via verify and repairing it does nothing. It still won't mount and the same problems that were happening before continue to happen.
I'm trying another way now. Since the internal drive was suffering from classic stiction (I think), I went and got an external case for it, put it in there, and started to whack on it. Not exactly elegant but its been known to work. After some beatings the drive did come back to life, and I'm right now attempting to copy my data from it. So far so good.
The Time Capsule, and Time Machine for that matter, have proven worthless when I needed them. If this copy is successful, the TC is going back and I doubt I'll get another. This situation has been entirely unacceptable. I bought it only 4 months ago, and already the TC hardware/software corrupted my data. This is no kind of backup system, its pretty awful, and Apple really should not be advertising this device as a safe way to back up your data. -
Use time capsule drive for mass storage instead of time machine
I'm considering buying a new Airport Extreme with the time capsule drive. I'd interested to know if I can use the built in drive as an additional HD verses using it for a back up drive with time machine? I'm aware I can plug in a USB external drive for network storage, but would like to use the built one for storage as well. Anyone know if this is possible?
I just got a 2TB time capsule a few days ago to use as a "poor man's file server" for my iTunes library. Bob makes valid points, and I am aware of the limitations, but I think it will meet my needs for awhile. I am in the process of ripping a large DVD collection and my iTunes library is over 350gb which was starting to feel crowded on my MBA's 512gb SSD.
I have plenty of external USB and thunderbolt drives, but I wanted wireless access to the libary anywhere in the house. With the AC wireless on my 2013 MBA, I wouldn't really classify the time capsule as "quite slow", I'm seeing about 30MB/s for FInder file copies. I have a 1TB USB2 WD Passport drive and the speed is very comparable - about 35MB/s. Sure, it's not as fast as my thunderbolt drive at 190MB/s or SSD at 700MB/s, but it seems to work well for my content (I don't use HD video in iTunes).
The only noticeable issue is that the TC disk spins down almost immediately if it isn't in use, so you get a lag of a few seconds if you pause a movie for a minute. And it takes longer to start iTunes of course. For me, these were acceptable trade-offs to allow my library to grow to 2TB without any directly connected external storage.
I wanted an AC router regardless and the TC gives me a wireless disk for $100 more. In the future I can always add a "real" media server and let the TC do backups. But for now I'm happy with the way it works. -
Finder crashes trying to access Time Capsule drive
Hi.
I have just set up a Time Capsule 2TB. Time Machine also seems to be working fine - it's backing up right now. However, in Finder, if I click on the new Time Capsule drive that has just been added, Finder crashes. This happens every time I click it.
This creates a crash report. This is it - it's long... Anybody have any input on this..?
Thanks in advance!

How to access Time Capsule drives behind DSL Router over WAN
Hello everyone,
I have an older Time capsule(with USB Drive) connected to my Hitron CGN3 DSL wireless router over ethernet.
I have turned off the wireless functionality of the TC since the router seems to be much faster on Speedtest.net.
I have my TC and attached USB drive setup to share over WAN but am getting a Double NAT error.
It doesn't seem like I can turn off NAT on my Router.
I can't run the TC in bridge mode because it will remove the Share over WAN option for the TC and Drive.
Is it possible to setup the TC and attached USB drive to the router, without wireless on, so that I can access the TC and drive over the internet?
Any help would be soooooo apreciated!!!
Thanks!
IanDoes anyone know why my Time Capsule drive sharing needs to be set to disk password?
You can set the TC disks to user accounts.. at least you can on older TC with older airport utility.. but there are consequences which you discovered.
If you set accounts.. you will have major issue with the existing files.. they will all disappear.
The old v5 utility gives you this warning.. which somehow Apple forgot on new version.
It actually makes all the present files disappear for all users. The warning just doesn't go far enough. You do this on a blank TC.. and of course the USB drive is just the same.. you cannot use different settings on that to the TC internal drive. So offload all your files.. create accounts on a bare TC.. load the files back into the correct user profiles.
In the end you probably want more flexibility than a TC is designed for.. buy something designed for remote access.. WD MyCloud.. it is hugely superior.
Also. . . I am trying some File manager apps for my iPhone in hopes that i can connect to the same drive with it. So far no luck with the free versions of FileBrowser Lite or File Explorer Free.
Most are SMB based.. not AFP.. Apple offer only two protocols.. SMB and AFP. But no responsible ISP allows SMB over the internet. The flood of files from hacked windows machines would bring the internet to a grinding halt.
People do get around it.. you can use filebrowser for instance by opening SMB to the outside world on a non-standard port.
See http://www.stratospherix.com/support/gsw_timecapsule.php?page=6remote
But this is incredibly risky.. there is very poor security and it is not a great idea. The AFP security is much better than SMB.
If you want security use something other than TC.. any real NAS that offers VPN access for instance. The cost of a WD MyCloud is very reasonable when you look at the flexibility of the design. But any decent NAS will offer real remote access.. not Apple's limited pretend version. -
Time Machine will not backup Time Capsule drive
I was filling up my time capsule so I bought a new 2GB drive for my backups. It is attached as an air disk on the Time Capsule as I also use it to backup other computers in the house.
My problem is that I am now using the HDD in the time capsule for my iTunes and iPhoto library, so that they can also be shared, but they are not being backed up by TM.
I have checked my excluded drives list and the Time Capsule drive isn't in there.
Any ideas/help/advice on how to get the time capsule backed up too?Sorry, but Time Machine will not backup a network drive (i.e. TC's HDD or any USB HDD attached to the TC). It can backup TO a NAS such as TC or a USB HDD attached to the TC. You can transfer your music to another external HDD that is connected directly to a Leopard-loaded Mac and TM can backup that up to TC/HDD attached to a TC.

Replacing old Time Capsule Drive with New one...how?
I recently purchased a larger hard drive to be my Time Capsule drive because the current drive was getting close to capacity. Is there a way to migrate/copy/clone/move my backup history to this new drive or do I have to start from scratch. If I start from scratch then it was really no use having the other backups and I don't necessarily want two disks full of backup data. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Did you purchase a 1TB Time Capsule to replace your 500GB TC or did you simply purchase a larger USB HDD to connect to the previous TC?
If the former, I don't know the best way to clone from one NAS to another NAS. I don't believe Disk Utility works, so it'll need to be a third-party app that can perform that function.
If the latter, you should be able to clone the TC internal HDD to the USB HDD via AirPort Utility -> Time Capsule -> Disks -> Archive. This will erase any data on the USB HDD as well. -
Mounting Time Capsule drive - total newbie question
I'm a total Mac newbiew, so please bear with me.
There are alot of threads in this forum that talk about 'manually mounting' a time capsule drive. What is this manual mounting, what's the point of doing it, and how do you do it?
My Time Capsule shows up under the Shared menu in Finder and I can access it from there. Is access to the disk via this link slower than mounting it or something?
Lastly, my TC is connected to my Mac Mini via an ethernet cable. How can I check that the Mac is talking to the TC disk via this connection rather than over the wireless network that the TC is providing?By "mounting" people are meaning seeing the Time Machine disk icon actually showing on the desktop. I can only think of 2 reasons for this, 1) time saving if people use the disk for other purposes as well as Time Machine and need to access it regularly, and 2) If it mounts, it proves you have connectivity.
Doing it from the finder sidebar is effectively the same thing, only you are doing it instead of getting the system to do it. Your initial access to the drive may be noticeably slower for a couple of seconds until it mounts is all, nothing worth worrying about
See here for more info if you are interested in mounting it automatically:

As for your last question, unless your wireless and wired connection talk to different networks, then turn off your wireless and used the wired connection. -
New hard drive, restored with time capsule -- safari won't open
Just successfuly replaced my crashed 500gb hard drive with a 2TB drive. Used time capsule to restore the system (what a godsend), but now programs on the computer arent working. I tunes opens, then crashes, the app store just bounces down in the application bar for a while then stops, safari opens 80% of a page and then the window crashes and goes away. I get a feeling it has something to do with my recent repairs, but what? Any help would be appreciated. this is very frustrating.
Original system is a white intel iMac 500GB 20 inch screen EMC# 2018.ok, sorry for being new at this, but I just tried "repair disk" and have an almost infinite array of permissions errors....so many that it crashes when doing the repair. Is this a problem with the drive itself, or the fact that i restored an entire system onto a new drive? Either way, is it fixable?

Drives won't wake with HighPoint RocketRAID Quad eSATA 6Gb/s For Mac 644
Just setting up and configuring a new 2010 12 Core Mac Pro 2.93Ghz with a HighPoint RocketRAID Quad eSATA 6Gb/s For Mac 644, and I've run into a problem. Currently, I have four WD WD600 Velociraptor drives hooked up to the card, functioning as individual drives (haven't tried RAID as of yet). OS 10.6.4, and version 1.0 of the Highpoint software.
Anyway, the card seems to work well, but I'm having big problems when I put the computer to sleep. If it's only asleep for a short time, the drives hooked to the RocketRaid card will be there. If the sleep time is longer (a few hours or more), they will no longer be in the Finder. When I wake the computer, I do hear the drives hooked to the card spin up, but they're not there. I've tried powering the drive case on and off, and that does not bring them up. Also tried unplugging and re-plugging them, and that also does not work. Going into "more info" in About this Mac shows that the card is still there. The only way to get the drives back, though, is to restart the computer. This is a drag for me, because I use my system mainly with Logic Pro, and load huge banks of samples that take a long time to load.
This card is supposed to be able to go to sleep. I wonder why it won't. I've sent multiple support requests to Highpoint, with no response. I'd sure like to find an eSATA 4 port card that would sleep. Unfortunately, there aren't many eSATA 3.0 6Gb/s options on the market yet.

Sonnet does not endorse every drive with their products, harkens back to SCSI which some people assume a drive is a drive is a drive in spite of persistent problems, and, there have always been "bugs" in Apple's AHCI and drivers.
would suggest the FirmTek SeriTek/2ME4-E for the Apple Mac Pro. You can view its performance tables with various configurations here: http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2me4-e/perform/
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11163806#11163806
To quote FirmTek:
The ability to hot swap hard disks is typically a function of the eSATA controller driver. I found the Apple Built-in AHCI driver may not always support hot swap with all SATA enclosure types. If you find this is the case with your particular dock then a restart may be required.
The benefit of the built-in Apple AHCI driver is that it provides instant support for several SATA controllers. The downside to the AHCI driver is that it has limitations and may not work properly or at all with some configurations. In addition, if the AHCI driver does not work for you the company that sold the controller usually cannot correct the issue as the AHCI driver was not built by them.
To address these issues FirmTek designed a driver for the 6G based SeriTek/e6G that allows it to properly hot swap with direct connect and Oxford 936/946 based enclosures. In addition, the new FirmTek driver also supports port multiplier based enclosures like the SeriTek/5PM. A dedicated driver can provide extra features that may not be available with the AHCI driver.
A 4-port card for direct connect, a 2-port card for what? PM case? SSDs?

How to clone external drive to time capsule drive
My previous set up was TM running on the TC drive with a USB drive that has my iTunes library. Because my TC ran out of space for two computers doing backup I had to buy a larger USB drive and swap their purposes. So I got the TM backups archived to the new USB pretty easily. But I am at a loss for how to transfer the old USB with my iTunes library to the TC disk. It doesn't show up in Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner as an available drive. I'm worried that it won't accurately transfer the data if I just do a drag and drop in Finder, screwing up my library. So:
1) Is there a way to clone a USB drive to the TC drive?
2) If not, will I be facing a huge iTunes mess if I just copy the files using Finder?Just drag and drop the iTunes library from the USB drive to the Time Capsule.

When I try to partition my time capsule it won't show up in disc utility. What do I do?
I want to partition my new 2 TB time capsule. I can see it and set it up with time machine just fine but it won't show up in disc utility.
Sorry, it is not possible to partition the Time Capsule disk unless you first crack open the Time Capsule, remove the hard drive, and place it in a separate enclosure.
Unfortunately, this will void the warranty.
Your best bet if you want to reserve a given amount of space on the Time Capsule disk is set up one or more Disk Images using Disk Utility.
Apple really designed the Time Capsule for Time Machine backups. While it is possible to store other data on the drive, it is not recommended. If at all possible, consider using another USB or Firewire drive for your other data. -
How do I get Spotlight to search a shared Time Capsule drive?
I purchased a 2TB Time Capsule that I am storing all of my photos, videos, etc. on, but I've found that Spotlight does not index and search that drive. I have searched everywhere for a solution, but can't find one. Does anyone have a solution to this? It is not physically attached to my MacBook Air - I am accessing it wirelessly.
Thank you for any help you can provide!OK, the Terminal is a the way that you access UNIX shell commands (the Mac command line interface). Instead of clicking on things you have to type the actual command into the "prompt" hit return, and then the shell executes the command. So you go to the Utilities folder and double click Terminal to launch it. Exactly what you see when it finishes launching will depend on how you have configured it, so it won't be exactly what I see, but there will be some words of encouragement and then the prompt, where you will type things:
Last login: Tue Mar 20 14:06:01 on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
-bash:~francine$
The "$" is where you start typing, or you can copy and paste things in also. You would then type:
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/YOURDRIVENAME/
You must make sure everything you type is exactly as given, thus you may want to simply copy and paste this:
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/
and, making sure there is no space after that final "/" character, type the name of your drive exactly as it appears in Finder. If the name has any spaces in it be sure to surround it with quotes:
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/"MY FAT DRIVE"/
Then hit the Return key. You will be asked for your admin password, and given a little lecture (this is only delivered the first time you use a sudo command). The password you type is not echoed to the screen in anyway whatsoever, so type very carefully and when you finish hit the Return key again. You'll then get the notice that indexing is enabled. Type the word exit, hit Return, and then quit Terminal.
