Time Capsule drops from network

Macbook uses time capsule disk for backup, works fine. I'd like to use the Seagate USB connected to TC to backup my iMac. Both computers on Mavericks.
From the iMac- Selecting the USB drive in the TM window results in oss error 2. Finder then cannot connect to TC in finder window (there was a problem connecting contact your system administrator). Airport utility then repeatedly asks for password for TC and never connects. Cannot access the TM settings from either the MacBook, iMac or any of the 3 iPhones or 2 iPad's airport utilities (shows as being gone from network on iOS devices).
Wifi connection to internet still runs fine.
Connection to Epson printer (attached to TC) works fine.
If I restart the TC, I can access the TC through the finder of the iMac, and use Airport Utility to configure the TC. Selecting the disk in TM gets the same result. So I cannot use TM at all on my iMac.
Have restarted everything numerous times, same result every time.
ugh, help!

The disk is not powered (as in it gets power through the usb cable). Perhaps this is the problem?
Yes, it is a problem . you should at least use a powered hub.. the Gen1-4 TC have a power supply that is barely rated for internal power usage.. ie 30W adding another 5W is not possible.. and the USB is standard 2.5W and will not provide spinup power adequate to the disk in most cases..
maybe I'm better off just plugging it into the iMac directly?
At least some of the ports on the iMac are designed for phone or ipad charging.. I have no idea which ones.. it will depend on model.
It is also going to work a lot faster and be more reliable.. plus reduce your network usage. Since using external drive on iMac is no great burden.. you can double side tape it to back or buy neat little shelves that connect to the stand.. the use of external drive is highly preferred over TC.. except that you should occasionally do a backup to something remote.. in case of fire or theft.

  • Time Capsule dropping off network after only a few minutes?

Right, I've had a good look through the forums and found a few similar issues to mine but none that are exactly the same or provide any answers, so I'll give it a go and see if anyone has a clue what is going on because I'm stumped.
I've got a new TimeCapsule which is connecting to my home network (through a belkin router), and for the first few days it worked fine. But ever since it's been acting up. To start with it kept dropping from the network and not showing up in either Airport Utility or Finder. Initially simply restarting it worked, but the dropping started getting progressively worse. I tried renaming the machine with a shorter title and no spaces, but the problem continued. Eventually it got to the point where the machine would just hang when switched on with either a solid green or solid amber light - no audible startup procedure or anything. Resetting the machine made no difference - sometimes the light would flash amber and sometimes it would do nothing at all, but neither did anything to the actual machine.
I left the machine off for a good few hours and switched it back on and it showed up in my system long enough for me to reset it and reconfigure it. Then as I tried to change the disc name to something short and without spaces it dropped out again and now seems dead as a dodo once more.
I have checked the local wireless networks, and it seems mine is using channel 2, which no one else seems to be. But I can't stay connected to the TC to change it anyway.
Ironically when it is working it's fine and I can access the files and everything. I'd be tempted to take it back tomorrow but I had moved a few files to the HD when it was working that I'd rather not lose forever.
    Any ideas?

    I got my puzzle here:
Time Capsule (Firmware 7.3.2) dropping internet connections (PPPoE) every 2-3 minutes, then automatically re-connect.
Time Capsule 500G - bought yesterday
ISP stability - 4 years, I've been using
Computers - PC (Vista), MBP (Mac OS X 10.5.6), MBA (Mac OS X 10.5.6) --- but seems not related to this issue. Even shut down the computers, TC still drops; No "Real Player Updater" found though...
I have to get back to my $55 Buffalo and it's running perfectly stable now...

  • Time Capsule disappears from network, but still routes. Forced to reboot.

My Time Capsule (approx 3 months old) operating properly for about 2 months, routing and Time Machine for 2 Macs.
Recently it has started disappearing from the network, Airport Util and Time Machine. After a reboot, everything will appear fine, but after a 5-15 days or so, it will just vanish again. It will still route network traffic just fine, but is not accessible.
    7.5.1
    WPA2 Personal
    1 USB printer attached
Internet is standard sharing, no DHCP issues
TC disk is available and working
    Only odd things:
I did play around with the workgroup on the TC a few times, as Windows comps were having major problems talking to eachother. No longer an issue (winpc's off network) and should not be related.
In the DHCP clients list, there are 2 IPs assigned to clients with the name of the Time Capsule. They both have MAC addresses too (huh?). All other machines connected to the network are accounted for already. I'm assuming this is some function of the TM backup process, as the TC is backing up 2 machines on that network.
I have not tried a hard reset yet, but if this happens again (4 times now, I'm sure it will happen again) I will hard reset and see what happens. I just don't see any reason it should vanish after a week.

you could be suffering from wireless interference.
perhaps one of your neighbor's wireless networks is interfering with yours. download iStumbler and note the channels other networks in the vicinity are broadcasting on.
change the channel your network is using as far away as possible from those.

  • Time Capsule disappears from network

    Hi,
I'm using a 2Tb Time Capsule (version 7.6.4), both for backing up my Mac mini and the iMac of my wife, as well as to create the LAN/WLAN at home. I never experienced any problems with it, until starting a few days ago the TC disappears from the network every now and then.
The funny thing is that the green LED is still on while the TC is 'gone', as well as internet access works without problems. After a couple of minutes the TC returns as if nothing would have happened. In case a scheduled backup is initiated while the TC is 'absent', I get an error message from the Time Machine, saying that it didn't find the backup disk. I restarted the TC once, but it didn't help.
    Cheers
                     Christopher

I have been having this issue the last few weeks. TimeMachine reports that it is unable to complete hourly backups and Airport Utility reports the prior seen TC cannot be found.
I have reset each device several times.
Tonight I ran Airport Utility and left it on and the Airport TC alternately reports "Device Not Found" (Internet light is green, Airport light is orange) and then a minute or two later "Reading Settings on Airport" (with both lights green). It then reverts to Device not Found.
This TC has been working just fine for the last 8 or 9 months since I bought it.
Is there a utility of some sort that I could run to check the integrity of the hardware?

  • AirPort Time Capsule disappears from network

I purchased an AirPort Time Capsule (2T) and installed it to our home network. We have Verizon Fios, are connected to the internet via the Verizon router, etc. I installed the Time Capsule per the instructions and our 2 MacBook airs found the Time Capsule. So did our IPads. I also connected our 2 IPhones to the newly created Wi-Fi network.
My main, home PC did find the Time Capsule, which is why I originally purchased the unit - to provide Wi-Fi back-up for our files, music, pictures, etc. Once found, I also changed my PC Wi-Fi settings to use my new network to connect to the internet.
I also copied some of my files to the 'data' section of the Time Capsule - the pictures took 8 hours to copy. Afetr completing this, I put my PC into hibernate and went to bed.
The next morning, my PC did not find or connect to the Time Capsule, but it is using the Time Capsule Wi-Fi for internet connections.
The Time Capsule appeared on it's own after about 15 minutes, but will not appear now and I do not know how to find it to re-connect and be found by my main HP PC. I have rebotted my PC several times and this does not work. I have also tried changing back to my old Wi-Fi connection and then re-connecting to the new network - also does not find the Time Capsule.
Does anyone know what I have to do so that the AirPort Time Capsule shows and is connected all of the time to the network, as seen by my main PC?
My MacBook airs seem to stay connected.
    Thanks,
    Jim

No, I did not know this and am installing it as I type.
I did notice that when I first re-boot my PC from the hibernate mode, the Time Capsule is not there in my network, but shows up in about 10 to 20 minutes (estimate). It has shown up each and every time I have used the PC. Awfully strange - when I commented on this forum originally, it did not show up for an hour or so; thus, I asked for help. Now - it shows up each time even if late or takes some time to discover.
Thus, I believe there might be some sort of 'search and find' function, that adds the wi-fi capable Time Capsule once found.
As long as it keeps showing up, as it is now, even if late, I will live with it.
I have been out of hibernate mode for about 10 minutes now - I just looked and Time Capsule is there.
    Thanks for the suggestion.
    Jim

  • Time capsule disappears from network but wireless still works

    Is this a common problem?

you could be suffering from wireless interference.

  • I installed a new router from my ISP provider and now I can't find my Time Capsule or "Guest" network.  What do I need to do to correct this problem?

I installed a new (and supposedly better & stronger) router from my ISP provider (Verizon) and now I can't find my Time Capsule or "Guest" network.
My Mac is not backing up because it can't find my Time Capsule network & my "Guest" network has also disappeared.
What do I need to do to correct this problem?

You must reset the TC to factory and start over. The TC simply remembers too much from the previous setup to work in the new one.
If your new router is going to take the router role, then the TC will have to be bridged and you will lose your Guest wireless.. the way around this is to use the Verizon router as your guest wireless and the TC as your main wireless.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.

  • Time Machine and Time Capsule - Failing with Network Problem

My problems with TM/TC have been ongoing for a couple of months now and I am going round in circles - need help.
This is the second post I have made, the first got lost in people suggesting the obvious - so I will try to be a little more specific if I can.
I will detail the current state first - i.e. where I am now - after I will list what I have done so far to get to this point.
Currently, my iMac (intel) is directly connected by Ethernet 1GB to the Time Capsule. The TC is then connected to a Netgear router which in turn is connected to Internet.
I have no network problems at all - internet connection is fine. the Netgear Router has the latest firmware version and is working fine. The porblems i have are nothing to do with this.
The time Capsule is in Bridge mode and getting a reserved dhcp IP address from the Netgear router.
The Time Capsule has been fully reset - i.e. power cable out, hold the reset button, plug in power cable (spark, spark), hold reset button, fast blink for 20 seconds or so, light goes out, release button.
I have re-applied the latest Time Capsule firmware.
I have renamed the disk on the Time Capsule.
I have renamed my iMac and deleted all the time capsule entries from Keychain.
I have re-installed Mac OSX and re-updated to the latest 10.5.6 release.
At the moment I have kicked off a backup with a lot of large files - like music folder, video folder etc excluded. I also have parallels and have excluded the disk image. I have 1 other 50GB disk image which is also excluded.
I am expecting the first initial backup will complete successfully.
I will then remove music and video from exclusions and allow them to backup. I am expecting this will complete no problem. (I do this because the upcoming problem will happen if I move away from the machine - and I dont want to sit there for 2 days).
So up to this point TM and TC have performed flawlessly. The issue that follows started happening before the 10.5.6 update after backing up with no issues for months. At this point I will be able to use TM to browse the backup and restore files. I will be able to mount the sparse bundle and browse files. Spotlight reports no issues and indexes quickly.
If I leave my machine after a successful backup and the hourly update kicks in it will fail with 'A Network problem' basically saying the backup has filed because of a network problem, but is not any more specific, logs show far too much to put the whole thing here, but the following is an excerpt

It goes on and on and is repeated every hour. For each one I get an error message on screen saying backup failed due to a network error. However I have tried a manual download over the same period set at an extremely slow rate so that it was downloading during this time and it showed no errors. I.e. the network connection from imac, through TC to netgear and out to internet - and monitored this while time machine showed these errors (i.e. at the same time) and this showed no connection problems at all and completed succesfully.
I know TM uses an internal address to do backups, but uses the same cable and network card to get the job done. I am simply removing the cable as a source of issue although I have also replaced this making no difference.
Applecare are involved and have so far been sent 2 sets of logs and so far have not been able to find the cause. New TC is on its way to try that, although they think it is something on the imac that is causing this.
Sleep mode is turned off although screen sleep is on. The tick is not in the box for putting hard drives to sleep whenever possible.
Now, after this has happened, and back at the machine. I restart both imac and TC. Try running a backup, spotlight starts to re-index - i.e. will mount the backup volume and start the index process, gets to about 90% then fails - again excerpts from log

I own a Macbook Air and am using a 2TB Time Capsule router. I am currently using for automatic backups for my Macbook Air.
I also own 2 PC laptops for the rest of the family. Would it be possible to use an external hard drive connected to the USB port of the Time Capsule as a network drive for the PCs? I want to share files between the two PCs.
    Thanks

Yes, you can do that.. although it is not necessarily as straight forward as you might think it should be.
    1. The TC has to be running SMB compatible names. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    2. The disk must be formatted to file system the TC can read. HFS+ or Fat32.. but the HFS+ is vastly superior.. the actual format is irrelevant from sharing point of view as it is still shared via SMB to the network.
    3. It is slow.. half the speed of the same drive plugged into your computer.. although if the connection is over wireless that is probably irrelevant.
    4. You might need a powered hub to get the drive to work.. Apple underpower the USB.. and even a powered disk still won't work.
    5. There are some issues with the TC getting the USB drive to work.. too many factors to say you will have issues or not.. but be aware this is not as straight forward as it could be. or should be.
    6. If you want to share files.. you can always share them directly.. pc to pc or pc to mac.. there is no necessity to do it via a network store.. You can also use the 2TB internal drive.. create a disk image and you can then store you data in that. Internal drive is much more reliable and faster.

  • Time Machine backup to Time Capsule clobbers wireless network

    Dear All,
When TimeMachine starts a backup to my new Time Capsule, the wireless network gets clobbered. Other computers on the network's throughput to external sites goes to basically zero (slow ping times, dropped packets- basically unusable.) Is this the expected behavior?
The configuration I have for my home network is
cable modem -> time capsule serving wireless network -> "g" network with 2-3 laptops (macbook pro and dell windows laptops.) The dells can't do anything when Time Machine runs, and since it runs hourly it is a bit irritating. I'm considering getting another Mac and then the downtime of my network would increase even more....
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Peter

My old G5 has 802.11b, and back ups to TC are SLOW. But then the "wire speed" of g is 11M bits/s or ~1 MB/s, but in the real world if you got 100KB/s that's probably good. 100KB/s is only 6 MB/min or .36 GB/hr.
So 2GB/.36GB which is 5.6 hrs.
Or to put it another way that's about 3 GB/hr at very best.
And that's ignoring stuff like compression!
in short: not usable with 802.11g
    ===
On my Mac Pro with 802.11n (54 Mbs) I get about 8x that because "n" is about 5x faster wire speed and seems to have better "software".
    e.g. I get about about 25 GB/hr on my ".11n" system
Still way slow but at least useable.
    ===
Moral of the story don't bother which TC if you don't have "n"

  • I can't find my time capsule or primary network. How can I recover it and connect to it again?

I can't find my time capsule or primary network (only have access to my guest network)..it's simply not showing in Airport Extreme... I don't want to reset time capsule because I already have important data there.

  • Does an Airport Express require a wired connection to boost a Wi-Fi signal if I already have a wired Airport Time Capsule on the Network?

I want to boost the Wi-Fi signal around my house. I have a 3TB Airport Time Capsule connected to my Virgin Media modem via a WLAN connection but wonder if an Airport Express device can be used at a remote location purely wirelessly - apart from a power connection obviously?

Does AirPort Express require a wired connection.......if I already have a wired AirPort Time Capsule on the Network?
No, but you will have much better network performance if you do wire the AirPort Express.
The reason for this is that when you try to extend a network using wireless, you will typically lose about a half of the potential speed capability on the network.
There is no network speed loss when you wire the Express.
Here is what Apple's support document says about this:
In the case of a wirelessly extended network, throughput may be reduced to less than 60 percent of that of a single device. The general rule is to keep the Wi-Fi network as simple as possible. You can accomplish this by using the minimum number of Wi-Fi base stations required to service the physical network area and by using Ethernet wherever possible.
Extending the range of your Wi-Fi network by connecting Wi-Fi base stations together using Ethernet is always the best option, and will provide the best throughput

  • Add a 4th génération time capsule to existing network

I have a regular router at home (in the basement) i would like to add a time capsule to my network at the 1st floor of my house to have more wifi power at the 2nd floor or outside an be able to configure time machine for my macbook air... Can I have both router on my network?

The Time Capsule can be installed virtually anywhere you want at your house if you connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your basement router to the WAN "O" port of the Time Capsule.
Then configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network using the same wireless network name, same security settings and same password as the basement router.
Finally, as the last step, make sure that the Time Capsule has been configured to operate in Bridge Mode to allow it to function correctly on the network.

  • Extend my Time Capsule (Dual Band) network

Hi, I need to extend my Time Capsule (Dual Band) network as currently the Time Capsule is downstairs connected to a modem and I need to connect my Blu-ray player via ethernet to the internet which is upstairs.
I came across the following article from Apple http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259 if I follow this will I be able to use the ethernet ports on the AEBS?
Also do I need to purchase an AEBS or is there another router i.e. Linksys or D-Link?
    Cheers

Apple's "extend a wireless network" will enable the ethernet ports on the "remote" device in addition to providing more wireless coverage in the area where the remote device will be located.
Be sure to check to make sure that there will be a good wireless signal where the "remote" device is to be located by moving your laptop to the proposed location and logging on the wireless to make sure that you get a good, stable internet connection.
If you cannot get a good wireless signal at this location, you'll need to look at an ethernet connection method to allow communications between the devices.
It is extremely unlikely that the "extend" setup would work with devices from other manufacturers, so it would be wise to stay with the same manufacturer on any type of "main" and "remote" wireless setup.

  • Time Capsule and extend network

    Hello,
my connection between Time Capsule and router is nearly working, but not perfect. Router an Time Capsule are connect via WLAN. Setup an possition of the router can not be changed. The router is far away from my laptop , so there is a very poor connection. Thats why I wanted to extend the network. Extending with WDS is not possible because of the router configuration. I have choosen " extend network" in the Time Capsule setup, picked the network from the list and entered the key ( 128 bit WEP ). Time Capsule tells me it could not extend the network, although I can access the Time Capsule and have a working internet connection. I am accessing the Time Casule via Router and all wireless, so the router an Time Capsule have to be connected, somehow. Can someone help me to get this setup really working? Or is it possible to access the router via Time Capsule? Because the Time Capsule is close to my laptop an I would have ab better connection like this.

This is not the actual problem. The connection is working, but very slow, because the router ( with dd-wrt software on it ) is too far away. So i wanted the Time Capsule to support the network. Connecting router and Time Capsule with WDS is not possible, because the setup of the router hast to be NAT. There is a another option in the Time Capsule setup to extend a network without WDS, which I wanted to use. The Time Capsule connect to this network via WLAN ( otherwise I could not access it ) but it does not extend the existing network. This is problem with Time Capsule an router. I wanted to know what I have to change in setting so that the Time Capsule extends the network. Is there somthing special with password or IP adress ( at the moment it is set to DHCP ), .... ?
