Time Capsule..ethernet works, wifi does not.

I have had issues with my time capsule and the internet being down. I can always solve it by unplugging and restarting. This time it it is just wifi that does not work, ethernet does. I have an airport extreme that I can use but would like use the TC for back ups. What can I do?

Is your TC a simultaneous dual-band model? Can any wireless device access the TC or see other wireless devices on the local network? If they can, is it that they are just not able to access the Internet?

As it happens, a connection to the Time Capsule is established usually, anyway. On occasion it doesn't.
I have a Volume, Data, on the capsule, which similarly, usually mounts, but occassionally doesn't, with access permissions denied.
Any suggestions on how begin to work out how to achieve networking seamlesness?

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
    Try again to back up.
If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back.

  • Time machine ethernet backup to time capsule works, wifi does not

    Hi all.
I recently updated my old time capsule to one of the new tall ones ME182X/A with a 3GB drive.  I transferred over the backup file of my Macbook Pro according to the Apple instructions (Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive) and whilst connected via an ethernet cable, time machine works fine with the new time capsule.
However, when I disconnect the ethernet cable and connect to the time capsule over wifi, time machine hangs on "preparing backup".  I do not get to "xxMB of xxMB" or any error messages.  I've tried the following:
reconnecting via ethernet after restarting my Macbook Pro (running 10.9.5) allows time machine to start and complete the backup.
I've tried deleting the ".inprogress" file, as per some websites, but this doesn't solve the problem
    turning off spotlight, doesn't help
I have no anti-virus software running
restarting the computer, resetting SMC, restarting the time capsule - no help.
The wifi side of the TC is working perfectly otherwise.  I can "see" it with Airport Utility, and mount the drive and explore it without any problems.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks again,
    John

Here are the steps I would use.. do not connect by ethernet at all whilst you do them.
    Factory reset the TC.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Redo the setup with different names. Short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. eg TCgen5 as base station name. TCwifi for wireless name.
Make sure the password for disk and wireless etc.. are 8-20 characters pure alphanumeric mix of case and numbers.
Reset TM then to the new drive location.
See A4 pondini for a full reset.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Strongly recommend you also verify the backup and install the Widget.. A5 and A1. The log you get from the widget is a big help to see what is going wrong.
Ensure the ipv6 is set to link-local only in wireless.
I would do the whole lot but you can test at each step if you want.. I just had it happen to me.. first time in 12months and regular posting in this area. Doing the above got me going again.. although it takes a bit of patience to work through the lot.

  • I have a Mac Pro tower with two internal Hard Discs, each one 2TB. I purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. But it does not allow me to back up because it says there is not enough back up space available. Between the two HDs there are 3.3TBs. Can I daisy chain TC?

I have a Mac Pro tower (OSX version 10.6.3) with two internal Hard Drives, each one 2TB.
I purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. But cannot back up because it tells me there is not enough space.
I have more than 3Tbs to store to the new TC.
Can I daisy chain two TCs to store the 4TBs?
How can I back up only the internal HD that is already full, without backing up the other one?
How can I do back up using Time Machine to back up the 3.5Tbs?
Do I need to purchase another external HD (that is not TC) to be able to back up all of my photos?

Can I daisy chain two TCs to store the 4TBs?
No, you cannot link to produce a single large partition.
But you can have two separate backup jobs.. and use each partition. That is hard on TM but you can easily get a different backup software for it.
How can I back up only the internal HD that is already full, without backing up the other one?
In TM you do a different setup and exclude the other drive.
But it is better to use an alternative software IMHO.
How can I do back up using Time Machine to back up the 3.5Tbs?
You would need to use a network drive of more than 4TB .. it would also take forever. This is just wrong way to do it. Although you can buy a NAS that will work with Time Machine and load it with disks 16TB is possible.. if you can get a second mortgage.. the fragile nature of TM on 3rd party devices.. would leave me in cold sweat if anything went wrong.
TM is excellent at keeping incremental backups of files that keep changing.. as such you should use TM to backup your OS disk and main user directory.. exclude all files and directories that never change. Back them up separately.
Do I need to purchase another external HD (that is not TC) to be able to back up all of my photos?
Yes, that is a much better idea. You want to store photos safely and you want to store them in multiple places. If you have multiple TB of photos, dedicate a couple of disks to the backup. ie have at least two copies.. not in backup format.. in straight copy format if possible.. so you can keep one of the disks offsite.
I would be using your MacPro internal disk access, to place the disk onto sata bus and do the copy disk to disk direct. Or even buy esata card.. or sata to esata converter cable so you can use esata box. That will beat any other transfer speed except thunderbolt for which you would need third mortgage. (The MORT in mortgage is significant).
The great jurist Sir Edward Coke, who lived from 1552 to 1634, has explained why the term mortgage comes from the Old French words mort, "dead," and gage, "pledge." It seemed to him that it had to do with the doubtfulness of whether or not the mortgagor will pay the debt.

  • My Time Capsule's 5GHz network does not appear as a network any longer. Airport utility is 5.5.3 and iMAC is 10.7.1 The TC appears to be configured correctly in the utility screen.

My Time Capsule's, only the 5GHz network, does not appear as a network any longer. Airport utility is 5.5.3 and iMAC is 10.7.1 The TC appears to be configured correctly in the utility screen. This began sometime after upgrade to 10.7.1 however this does not explain why either of my iPAD's does not see the 5GHz network.

Wish some Apple folks would chime in...
Apple is not here. Even if they might rarely monitor these boards, they will not respond. We're all users, just like you.
Suggest that you open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
    Click the Wireless Options button
Check one more time to see if you still have the 5 GHz Name option enabled. If not, enter a check mark and click Update to save the new settings.
If 5 GHz is enabled, temporarily disable the setting and Update. Then go back in and enable the setting again.
If you still cannot "see" the network from any device, about all that you can do at this point is reset the Time Capsule back to factory defaults and try the configuration again to see if it will "take". Lion is causing some strange issues, and this may be another.
If this is not successful, then it's time to contact Apple support or arrange a visit to an Apple store to let them take a look

  • Ethernet works, wireless does not.  Internet connection issues.

This is my very first post, I hope it will be helpful and save people the grief that I went through.
Yesterday, on Wednesday, for some reason my MacBook "AirPort" would show full bars at the top of the screen but when I opened Safari or iTunes, I had no connection. What's weird is that I had never changed the settings since getting my laptop a year ago and they were locked as well.
I connected through Ethernet cable directly into my WRT54G linksys router and the connection was good. What was strange is that my wife's MacBook had no problems connecting wirelessly.
I tried everything I could think of. Rebooting my computer. Restarting the router and cable modem. Tinkering with the TCP/IP numbers. I updated my OS from 10.6.4 to 10.6.5 and updated Safari and iTunes. Nothing worked.
My wife and I went through every single post on the Apple forum discussions site. We tried some interesting things. Putting a $ character before the password. Changing the DNS server numbers. Doing stuff in the unix console. Changing the time on my computer. Nothing worked.
I booted from the Applications disc that my MacBook came with and did the Hardware Diagnostic Test. No hardware issues, thank goodness.
We tried everything we could think of. Finally, I gave in and called the Apple store closest to me, they transferred me over to Apple Support and I spent 2 hours on hold. I got fed up and called, while still on hold with my phone, with my wife's phone. I got a recorded message, "Sorry our offices are closed." That was quite frustrating to hear.
So I got online through my Ethernet connection and booked an appointment at the Apple store to see a Apple Genius. Went to bed hoping that the next day, I could boot my MacBook and wirelessly connect miraculously.
The next day (today), I gave the wireless connection a try. Same problem. Full bars, no connection.
    Off to the Apple store.
At the Apple store, my Genius guy connected my MacBook to their store internet wirelessly and then tested the connection. It worked. Then he ran Disk Utility to verify/repair disk permissions.
Apparently, he says he runs Disk Utility once a week to fix disk permission problems on his own computers. Why would I have disk permission problems when I'm the only user on my own computer? He states that when separate programs are run, they all access user permissions and some programs that are buggy alter these permissions or files when they're not suppose to.
Apparently, according to Disk Utility, that's what happened and my permissions thing could not be repaired.
    * * * The **ONLY SOLUTION** was a re-installation of system software. * * *
So, I brought my laptop home and did a re-installation. Reboot your laptop with the boot disc the computer came with, by holding down the "C" key after you turn it on. For some reason it took a few minutes just to boot from the boot disk, it felt like I was holding down the "C" key forever. The re-insall took about 50 minutes.
    The problem was FIXED.
The only thing that I appear to have lost are the desktop pictures that I downloaded and put in the Library -> Desktop Pictures folder. Everything else appears normal so far.
I'll be running Disk Utility more often from now on. Apple Genius guy says that Disk Utility should be run after booting from the boot disc because it will be more thorough than running it when booting off your laptop.

So, the same problem occurred and in a relatively shorter time than before. I began to think that something is causing this problem.
My theory is that it is a VMWare software issue. What I've been doing differently recently is using it in "Unity" mode as opposed to "Full Screen" mode. My guess is that the program is modifying my wireless permissions and screwing it all up.
So, what I've done is set the "Network Adapter" to "Host-Only". This denies the VMWare program internet access but still allows file sharing between the Windows virtual environment and the Mac hard drive.
Then I had to re-install Mac OS X all over again to fix the wireless settings/permissions mess.

    1) are you sure a reset holding the reset button will not delete my data?
Absolutely sure.. There is no connection at all.. reset is only the router side of the TC.
For the hard disk to be erased you need to access the airport utility disk page.. request erase and confirm the operation.
    2) I can access to time capsule by ethernet but I am not able to input the corret setting by myself
    Thank you again
I am uncertain why if you have access you cannot change settings.. but that is why you reset things so any of those problems should be fixed.
Here is the Apple info on reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
And here is the quote from the horse's mouth so to speak.
Factory default reset: Perform this reset if you wish to repurpose the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule and want to remove all personal profiles and settings first. This reset resets the device to its state when you first purchased it. Data stored on internal or external hard drives connected to the device will not be erased. If you choose, you may manually erase the hard drive using AirPort Utility.

  • Time capsule doesnt work with telia bredband no wifi

Time capsule doesnt work with telia bredband no wifi.  Time capsule and its wifi worked in the beginning, but now it doesnt. I have tried everything without success.

There is no question.. so if it is a statement of resignation.. then if under warranty and faulty Apple will fix it/replace it.. if not dead you will be given it back.
Are you using Lion? If so did you download 5.6 airport utility?
Plug the TC into a computer by ethernet.. hold in reset for 10sec.. and then redo the setup.
Give TC and wireless short names and no spaces and no special characters.. lock the wireless to manual a/n-b/g and fix the channels.
Then if it doesn't work most likely faulty. Otherwise it is just setup is wrong.

  • Time Capsule wifi stopped working but drive access is ok and 2nd bridged time capsule is working

After six months of successful setup, the wifi on my new 3TB Time Capsule stopped working. At first I would just power everything down and then power it up and it would come back but it had to be reset multiple times per day. Now it is not working at all. I find this very weird because even though the wifi is not working and I can't access the internet, I still have access to the hard drive through finder on my MAC and through the Network on a PC. Also the 2nd (much older) time capsule I have in bridged mode is working just fine for both the drive and the wifi.

I think you should take the TC back to apple for testing.
It does make it confusing if you have multiple wireless AP's .. you should turn off everything but the TC that is giving you problems.. then when the wifi drops out, test with ipad or iphone for instance.. if it is gone .. then take the TC to apple for replacement.

If you migrated all the info from time machine to your new MBP. The TM will usually ask to connect to the old backups.. sorry I am not sure is this what you want to do.. Personally I think you start a fresh backup.
BTW Time Capsule does not do anything.. it is a dumb hard disk in a box.. it is TM that does everything.
Look at B5 and B6 here about connecting to your backup.

  • WiFi does not connect whilst Time Machine backup occurs at startup

This is a problem I've had since the beta test session and does not seem to have been fixed.
If I shut down the computer in the middle of a backup or a backup strats immediately on opening the lid of my computer (MBA late 2010), the WiFi does not connect. If I am patient, eventually the backup will terminate and I can then connect. My router is a Time Capsule, and all software is up to date.
I don't recall having this problem with Snow Leopard.

  • Time Capsule Back to my Mac not working

    Hello,
For the last two weeks I am not able to connect to my Time Capsule at work, before I saw it automatically on my iMac/MacBook Pro at home.
I already removed and rentered my credentails on the time machine for Back to My mac, unfortonatelly this didn't fix it.
    What can I do?
    Thanks in advance.
    Greetings,
    Robin Riegman

I have a similar problem. I had a new hard disk installed and upgraded to Lion at the same time. The IT person who did the job set up iCloud as a backup. Now when I connect my external drive, Finder doesn't see/recognize it, so I can't continue to do (or use) Time Machine backups. I do not want to back up my data to iCloud, but Apple's main object with Lion and Mountain Lion seems to be to force users to use iCloud. It doesn't give you a choice; you can't go back. When I try to sync my iPad to my Mac or take my data off iCloud and back up my Mac with Time Machine (external drive), the program menacingly threatens to remove all the data that I want to back up from my computer, leaving me with no data in iCloud or my Mac.
@r.riegman: sorry I can't help you. I'm going to try the Genius Bar, although Apple warns that backup issues are not supported.
In essence my question is: how can I go back to external drive backups with time machine without losing all my data after an initial designation of iCloud as the backup?
Will someone please r.riegman and me? The more time goes by, the more unbacked-up data we accumulate.
    Thank you!

  • Wifi does not work correctly on iPad Mini w/ Retina display

I've found that Wifi does not work properly on the iPad mini w/ Retina display.
Some background: I own three iPads (iPad mini w/ retina display, iPad mini, and iPad 3rd gen), an iPod touch 5th gen, and a Macbook Air, and use them all frequently with my pocket Wifi router.
None of them exhibit any Wifi problems whatsoever except for my iPad mini w/ retina display.
    Here are the details:
In the middle of using Wifi with my pocket Wifi router, the Wifi connection will abrubptly drop, then reconnect. After the Wifi reconnects, it is no longer able to connect to the internet (even though Wifi itself is connected).
Once the iPad mini w/ retina display's Wifi gets into this state, the following may or may not restore WiFi temporarily:
    Restart the device
    Reset network settings
Yet, even if connectevitiy is restored, the problem will happen again within minutes.
When the iPad mini w/ retina display gets into this state, the Wifi on my iPod touch, other iPads, and on my Macbook Air work perfectly fine, so I know the problem is not with my Wifi device or it's connection, but specifically with the iPad mini w/ retina display
    Note:
The iPad mini w/ retina display never has any issues with my home or work Wifi networks. The problem only happens when connected to my pocket Wifi device. Yet, all of my other iOS devices and my MacBook Air work perfectly with my pocket Wifi device, therefore I know the problem is not with the pocket Wifi device, but with the iPad mini with retina display.
    Solutions:
Resetting the iPad mini w/ retina display to factory settings does not solve the problem
Resetting network settings on the iPad mini w/ retina display does not solve the problem
I have even replaced my original iPad mini w/ retina and got a new one. Yet, the new device exhibits the exact same behavior as the original device.
    Conclusion:
I know this is not a hardware problem (since it happened with both my original as well as replacement device).
I know this is not a problem with my pocket WiFi router, since it works perfectly with all of my other iOS devices and MacBook Air.
Therefore, this must be a software / firmware bug with the iPad mini w/ retina display. Apple will need to fix this in a future software update.
Has anyone else seen this problem?

I too have experienced this issue over the past two days... I have a 16gb ipad mini retina, for reference. I bought the device one week ago, and had not experience any issues at all until bringing my device to work. I logged into my work's enterprise level wireless network both yesterday and today, maintained normal wifi capabilities for 2-4 hours each day, and was then randomly dropped, both days. I tried hard resets, resetting my network settings, airplane mode, etc. Nothing has worked. I am still offline on my ipad mini retina.
My iPhone 5 is sitting right next to my iPad mini retina. The iPhone is currently connected to the same very network, and has been for the past two years. I have never lost connection on my iPhone's wifi, just my iPad mini retina.
This must be some kind of bug, as it does not sound like a hardware nor network issue.
Hopefully they fix this in 7.1.
