Time capsule + external HD

1] I use Cryptboard widget and for some reason all my info went. i use Time Capsule and went back to an earlier date, opened the Cryptboard widget but my info was not there. Where can I find the info that was on an earlier save date?
2] I have an external 800 firewire disk cloned from my mac mini. it shows up in my sys prefs as a bona fide startup disk, I chose it and did re-start but all I got was the Apple logo and the spinning ball.
I did this several time with same result.
How can i boot up from the external firewire drive?
thanx

Wow. Great speed and succinct reply. Thanks for the welcome.
So, my intention is to have wireless storage and libraries, and also back up them up too. How about using two time capsules? One TC (say 500GB) for storage and another TC (1TB) for Time Machine back ups?

  • Time capsule, external hard drive, iTunes media library

    Hi,
i want to setup my time capsule, at the same time I want to export my iTunes library to an external harddrive. following questions:
    - I setup my time capsule currently only as wifi, not yet as a backup medium
    - how do I set this whole thing up and in what sequence?
    - I want to use movies purchased on iTunes from the library and not from the store, possible? Not via Apple TV I assume but via iTunes?
    - I want to access movies located on the external hard drive from anywhere in my home network, possible?
I need to do this as I moved from usa to Europe and have To change my apple store. Before I change the store I need to download all movies to an external harddrive otherwise I cannot use them anymore due to license issues. Apple cannot help me here unfortunately.
the change is also necessary as staying in the US store causes more and more complications.
    ideas are welcome!
    thanks!

You can relocate your iTunes to an external hard disk .. plugged into the computer that is fine.. using it on a hard drive plugged into the TC is not so OK.. it can work but it will be slow.
    - I want to use movies purchased on iTunes from the library and not from the store, possible? Not via Apple TV I assume but via iTunes?
Yes, you can use the iTunes library to store and play the movie. it has to run from iTunes on the computer. I am not sure I understand the last bit about apple TV.. it is simply a streamer.. (unless you have Gen1 which can store movies on the hard disk). The Apple TV connects to your iTunes running on a computer. The TC has nothing to do with this, other than being part of the network.
Note the TC has no media extensions nor is it media aware.. it is a dumb wireless router.. that is all.
    - I want to access movies located on the external hard drive from anywhere in my home network, possible?
Access movies is fine.. read Apple prescribed method.
iTunes: How to share music and video
There is a lot of links to home sharing.
Again the TC is irrelevant to this, other than it ties the network.. but a switch or any other router could be doing that.. so the TC is of no particular use here.
For backups just setup TM in the computer to backup to the TC.. that is standard part of the setup.. and there is nothing particular in the TC required for that.. other than it plugs into the main router.. so exists as part of the network.

  • Time Machine does not see a Time Capsule external drive

Time Machine will not recognize an external drive attached to my Time Capsule, even though it did so last week. How do I get it working again?
Until last week, I was using Time Machine to back up to a Verbatim 2 TB drive attached to a Time Capsule. It occasionally hung, requiring me to restart the Time Capsule in order to get backups working again, so I bought a Seagate 2 TB drive to replace the Verbatim in case the problem was a flaky drive. Now I can't get Time Machine to recognize either disk when the disk is attached to the Time Capsule.
Both disks are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Both disks work correctly when I attach them directly to my Mac. When I attach either disk to the Time Capsule, Airport Utility shows the external drive, shows that sharing is enabled, and I can even mount the Time Capsule with Finder and see the external disk with Finder. But when I try to Select Disk in Time Machine Preferences, whether or not the Time Capsule is mounted with Finder, Time Machine Preferences doesn't see the disk—the only choices of disk are My User Account on the Time Capsule, and Other Time Capsule.
Restarting my Mac and restarting the Time Capsule does not help. Software and firmware updates are (and have been) up to date. I'm running OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 and Time Capsule version 7.6.4.
To reiterate, this was working a week ago. How do I get it working again?

If nothing in your configuration has changed, you can try plugging the disks one at a time directly into your mac, run Disk Utility and perform a Repair Disk. If any errors are displayed, rerun Repair Disk until there are none. Then try them back on the Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule, External HDD as NAS, Time Machine Backup the NAS

Can I attach an external HDD to Time Capsule to use as a NAS? Then can I use Time Machine on my Macbook to backup both my Macbook and the NAS drive to the HDD in the Time Capsule?

Can I attach an external HDD to Time Capsule to use as a NAS?
Yes. Although it will not exactly be a NAS with its own "brains".
Then can I use Time Machine on my Macbook to backup both my Macbook and the NAS drive to the HDD in the Time Capsule?
No. In order to back up the hard drive using Time Machine, the drive must be connected to your Mac, not the Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule external USB drive won't reconnect remotely over Back To My Mac

I'm running a Mac Mini at work, connected via ethernet to an enterprise network (I have no idea what routers they are using, or how they are set up).
At home, I have a MBP laptop and a Time Capsule (hardwired to cable modem) with an external USB drive attached.
All 3 machines (Mac Mini, MBP, TC via Airport Utility) have Back To My Mac switched on.
I can access the external USB drive on my home TC from my work Mac Mini....until the Mini falls asleep. When I wake it back up, the connection back to the TC fails. However....after restarting the Mini, the connection works again.
My first thought was that the corporate network / firewall / etc was causing the problem - not leaving correct ports open, or someting to that effect. However, I realised that if that were the case, restarting the Mini shouldn't help, but it does.
Does anyone have any idea how sleeping breaks being able to access a TC's external drive remotely over BTMM?
The Mac Mini is a 2.3GHz Core i5 with 8GB RAM and plenty of HD space.
The MBP is a 15" late 2013 retina, 2.6 GHz Core i7, 16 GB RAM, also plenty of HD space.
The TC is a 2 TB 4th generation model.
    Thanks!
    J

Sorry that did not work. This works well for me using Lacie drives, but I haven't tried Iomega.
Have you checked Iomega's site to see if any software/firmware updates available?
Also noticed during a quick search that a number of users are reporting mounting problems with Iomega. Not sure if this applies to you or not.

  • Time Capsule & External Hard Drive

Hello! I recently purchased the newest Time Capsule. The product its amazing, the wifi is faster; however, when I connected my external hard drive to my time capsule, the external hard drive icon does not appear on my finder. I only have access to the time capsule, but nothing seems to work. Any help that can be given to me will be helpful! I am desperate

Lets' find out if the Time Capsule is recognizing the drive.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
    Click the Disks tab
Here, you should see the name of your Time Capsule drive....named "Data" unless you have changed the name....and your other hard drive.
    Is that the case?
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named Backups and another drive, WD Drive, is attached at the USB port.

  • Time Capsule/External Hard-drive issues

Hello - I'm thinking about investing in a Time Capsule mainly to back-up my data and in particular the massive amount of photos (34,000) that I think are slowing this machine down! I just wanted to ask once I have the photos on the Time Capsule am I able to delete them from my hard-drive?
As an aside, I do have a couple of WD Hard-Drives but I amhaving issues with them in that I cannot get into the hard-drive. This has happened around the same time that I updated to OS X 10.9.2. I did read online that others were having issues with this too. Im not quite sure what to do as having spent the money on these hard-drives it's a little disappointing to have to consider buying a new external hard-drive - although probably a very worthwhile investment. Anyone having this problem too?
Thanks for your advice in advance it is much appreciated.

Since you have an iMac my advice would be to buy 2 external drives.  Now you can decide to move some of your data off your iMac to one of the drives for archiving and then use the other drive as a Time Machine backup of both the iMac and the archive.  You don't want a solution that has key data sitting on a single drive.
But...before you buy two drives, I must ask.  How much space are you using currently on your iMac.  Just having 34000 pictures won't slow down your machine unless it is running out of space.  Are you running out of space?  If you aren't, then a single large drive to backup your iMac is sufficient.  Just don't delete the photos so you have a redundant copy of each.
Finally, I personally don't like backing up over wifi unless with a notebook.  You have an iMac, a dedicated drive for backup should not be a problem behind that big screen.  It will be more reliable than a wifi backup and a heck of a lot faster.

  • Backup Time Capsule external disk to TC?

Is it possible for a networked hard disk (eg one which is connected to a Time Capsule) to be backed up on to that Time Capsule using TM?
I have a Maxtor external HD which was connected to my laptop via USB and on which I store my iTunes library. This was backed up to Time Capsule using Time Machine, along with the rest of my computer.
Now the Maxtor is connected to the Time Capsule so that I don't have to keep plugging/unplugging it and also it is available to other computers on my network. However TM no longer backs the hard disk up, presumably because it is not directly connected to my computer.
So is there a way of continuing to get the hard disk backed up on to the TC?
    TIA
    James

OK to ask the question in a different way:
is it possible to backup a network volume using Time Machine? Can any volume which is not physically connected by USB etc to the computer be backed up using TM?
Where does TM look for its list of volumes to back up? Is there a way of permanently adding a network volume to that list?
    TIA

  • Time Capsule, External HD & PC

I have a Time Capsule connected to my PC (Windows 7) - no problems, everything works.  I attached an external hard drive to my Time Capsule for additional backup (redundancy) and the TimeCapsule can see the new drive in AirPort utility, but Windows doesn't seem to recognize it.  I did check that file sharing was on, and I did restart the TC, but no luck.  I know the external drive works, it was perfectly happy connected to my pc through usb.  Any ideas would be appreciated!

The base station can't read or share NTFS or ExFAT drives.

  • HT1349 How can I obtain an original receipt for a Time Capsule (external hard drive back up) that was stolen?  I want to get the serial number of the device.

How can I obtain a receipt for the purchase of my Time Capsule back up external drive.  My drive was stolen and I am trying to find the serial number of the device.

Unless you registered it, for warranty purposes, with the manufacturer, there's no way.
Or if you have the box it came in, the box may have the S/N.

  • Time capsule & external drive - Time Machine Back-up of two macbooks - Can't connect

My wife and I each have a macbook pro and want to back them up using Time Machine.  I had my macbook and a time capsule for a while before she got her laptop, so I backed mine up to the Time capsule - no problems.
Now, I have purchased an external drive so that mine backs up onto the time capsule drive and hers is set to back up on the external drive due to space limitations.
However, with hers set up, my macbook can no longer see its original back-up file.  Meaning that hers will back-up all the time, but mine can't ever connect.
Is there a different configuration / setting that I should try to make this work?
    Help is greatly appreciated!

I don't follow how the change on one laptop can affect the other, unless they are networked together in some way.. how is the second laptop connected??
I suggest you reset Time Machine.. and rediscover the TC..
    A4 here http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If you upgraded to Lion or ML recently that is the issue.. reboot the TC and maybe the whole network to clear the old IP addresses.

  • Time Capsule external drive very slow for backup

I am experiencing very, very slow backup times using an external drive attached to my Time Capsule. When I recently added a 3 TB Rocstor external drive to my mid-2011 iMac using FireWire, I included it in the drives to be backed up. The internal 2 TB of storage in my Time Capsule was no longer enough, so I plugged a 4 TB WD My Book Studio drive into the Time Capsule's USB 2.0 port and specified this WD drive as the only backup storage. The first backup took almost 48 hours. Now the Time Machine keeps trying to back up about 400 GB - 500 GB (though there haven't been any changes) and is transferring about 400 KB/sec over Ethernet from my iMac to the Time Capsule's external drive. What am I doing wrong? (I recently upgraded the iMac to OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite.)

Frankly, I have no way to gauge your network setup, so I can't really tell you what you should expect. I can tell you from my own experiences using a local network based on a 3rd Gen. Gigabit Ethernet AEBS that using Ethernet the average throughput (not interface) was in the neighborhood of 16-20 MBs/sec. The average throughput for a USB 2.0 drive connected directly was about the same.
This works out to an average throughput of around 60 GBs/hour. Depending upon file sizes and number of files being transferred a USB 2.0 drive might reach 100 GBs/hour, but that is a rare outcome. The USB 2.0 drive interface speed is about the same as FireWire 400 - 400 Mb/s or roughly 50 MBs/sec. This is what I know from measurement. Do not expect Ethernet to be any faster for throughput.

  • Time Capsule External HDD Capacity

    Hi,
Latest Time Capsule  how much capacity of external USB HDD will be support.
    Thanks,
    Prem

As big as you can get.. 4TB is now readily available.
But I do not recommend using multiple disk raids as they are often not able to work.
You can use multiple disks.. you will need a powered hub anyway.
WARNING.. it is USB2 and it is slow.. about half the speed of the same drive plugged into a computer.
That is just the nature of handling files over networks to USB. It may not be noticeable from wireless.. but from ethernet the internal disk is much faster than USB. So you don't need fast disks.

  • Time Capsule -- external Drive

How exactly do I setup my Time Capsule to be an external hard drive using an ethernet cable, I want to connect wirelessly and at the same time be plugged in so that I can transfer files to it? mobility is not an issue, just want to use it as an external hard drive.
    Thanks

Thanks, Its working now... Now I will like to copy 250 GB of data to the Time Capsule obviously over the network it will take hours, how to I plug it to the computer to transfer data, over the ethernet cable do I unplug it from the modem and plug it to the computer, o do I buy a second ethernet cable>> any help will help.. thanks

  • Time Capsule External HD problem

    Hi all,
I just started having a problem today with my external HD (EHD) when connected via USB to my Time Capsule. I figured that one of the programs I was running corrupted some files on the EHD, so when I could no longer access the drive, I plugged it into the iMac, ran a disk utility and fixed the problems. It fixed some entries, but when I plugged it back into the TC, the TC said there were problems. I said ignore the problem, so it is ignoring the drive. Since I couldn't access it, I plugged it back into the iMac, copied all the data to my internal HD and then reformatted the disk. I also made sure that the partition scheme was GUID and all that checked out. When I go into the TC (even when the EHD is not connected) it still lists an entry for the EHD even though no drive is available. When I do plug the drive in, nothing happens.
    My questions are:
    - When you tell the TC to ignore problems, is there a way to un-ignore the problems?
    - Do you know what might be wrong with my EHD and why I can't hook it up to the TC?
    - Why would the TC keep an entry for connected disks even when it's not there? Can I remove the entry somehow?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    - Chris

I think I solved my own problem. The solution was to reboot the TC and the drive entry went away.
