Time Capsule external USB drive won't reconnect remotely over Back To My Mac

I'm running a Mac Mini at work, connected via ethernet to an enterprise network (I have no idea what routers they are using, or how they are set up).
At home, I have a MBP laptop and a Time Capsule (hardwired to cable modem) with an external USB drive attached.
All 3 machines (Mac Mini, MBP, TC via Airport Utility) have Back To My Mac switched on.
I can access the external USB drive on my home TC from my work Mac Mini....until the Mini falls asleep. When I wake it back up, the connection back to the TC fails. However....after restarting the Mini, the connection works again.
My first thought was that the corporate network / firewall / etc was causing the problem - not leaving correct ports open, or someting to that effect. However, I realised that if that were the case, restarting the Mini shouldn't help, but it does.
Does anyone have any idea how sleeping breaks being able to access a TC's external drive remotely over BTMM?
The Mac Mini is a 2.3GHz Core i5 with 8GB RAM and plenty of HD space.
The MBP is a 15" late 2013 retina, 2.6 GHz Core i7, 16 GB RAM, also plenty of HD space.
The TC is a 2 TB 4th generation model.
Thanks!
J

Sorry that did not work. This works well for me using Lacie drives, but I haven't tried Iomega.
Have you checked Iomega's site to see if any software/firmware updates available?
Also noticed during a quick search that a number of users are reporting mounting problems with Iomega. Not sure if this applies to you or not.

I have reinstalled the combined 10.9.5 OS upgrade, and verified that the drive works when connected to my other MB Pro (mid-2012 running Yosemite beta 3).  There is no third party software that I'm aware of in use for this drive, as it's only for Time Machine backups.

Is the drive's icon on the desktop (perhaps behind another icon, which is possible if Finder > View > Cleanup is enabled)?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > General > External Disks checked?
Is the drive listed in every Finder window's sidebar?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > External Disks checked?
Are Time Machine backups to the drive happening on schedule?
If not, does the drive appear in System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk?
Can you open /Volumes/Mac-Mini 2/Backups.backupdb using Finder > Go > Go to Folder...?
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? Is it (or can it be) mounted there?
Have you tried to plug it in to a USB port on the Mini (not a hub) or into a different USB port on the Mini?
Have you tried this: shut down; unplug the drive; boot the Mac; after you have logged in and the Finder is done populating the desktop and menu bar, plug the drive in?

  • Time capsule external hard drive backup

I want to back up & save all of my pics, movies, music to the time capsule hard drive so that iTunes can use them from the Time Capsule hard drive & I don't have to keep all that stored on my MacBook.  Can someone help explain how to do that?

Looks like you just need to move your iTunes Media folder to Time Capsule's hard drive and then let iTunes know of the new location.

  • Time Capsule & External Hard Drive

Hello! I recently purchased the newest Time Capsule. The product its amazing, the wifi is faster; however, when I connected my external hard drive to my time capsule, the external hard drive icon does not appear on my finder. I only have access to the time capsule, but nothing seems to work. Any help that can be given to me will be helpful! I am desperate

Lets' find out if the Time Capsule is recognizing the drive.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
    Click the Disks tab
Here, you should see the name of your Time Capsule drive....named "Data" unless you have changed the name....and your other hard drive.
    Is that the case?
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named Backups and another drive, WD Drive, is attached at the USB port.

  • Time Capsule/External Hard-drive issues

Hello - I'm thinking about investing in a Time Capsule mainly to back-up my data and in particular the massive amount of photos (34,000) that I think are slowing this machine down! I just wanted to ask once I have the photos on the Time Capsule am I able to delete them from my hard-drive?
As an aside, I do have a couple of WD Hard-Drives but I amhaving issues with them in that I cannot get into the hard-drive. This has happened around the same time that I updated to OS X 10.9.2. I did read online that others were having issues with this too. Im not quite sure what to do as having spent the money on these hard-drives it's a little disappointing to have to consider buying a new external hard-drive - although probably a very worthwhile investment. Anyone having this problem too?
Thanks for your advice in advance it is much appreciated.

Since you have an iMac my advice would be to buy 2 external drives.  Now you can decide to move some of your data off your iMac to one of the drives for archiving and then use the other drive as a Time Machine backup of both the iMac and the archive.  You don't want a solution that has key data sitting on a single drive.
But...before you buy two drives, I must ask.  How much space are you using currently on your iMac.  Just having 34000 pictures won't slow down your machine unless it is running out of space.  Are you running out of space?  If you aren't, then a single large drive to backup your iMac is sufficient.  Just don't delete the photos so you have a redundant copy of each.
Finally, I personally don't like backing up over wifi unless with a notebook.  You have an iMac, a dedicated drive for backup should not be a problem behind that big screen.  It will be more reliable than a wifi backup and a heck of a lot faster.

  • Time capsule, external hard drive, iTunes media library

    Hi,
i want to setup my time capsule, at the same time I want to export my iTunes library to an external harddrive. following questions:
    - I setup my time capsule currently only as wifi, not yet as a backup medium
    - how do I set this whole thing up and in what sequence?
    - I want to use movies purchased on iTunes from the library and not from the store, possible? Not via Apple TV I assume but via iTunes?
    - I want to access movies located on the external hard drive from anywhere in my home network, possible?
I need to do this as I moved from usa to Europe and have To change my apple store. Before I change the store I need to download all movies to an external harddrive otherwise I cannot use them anymore due to license issues. Apple cannot help me here unfortunately.
the change is also necessary as staying in the US store causes more and more complications.
    ideas are welcome!
    thanks!

You can relocate your iTunes to an external hard disk .. plugged into the computer that is fine.. using it on a hard drive plugged into the TC is not so OK.. it can work but it will be slow.
    - I want to use movies purchased on iTunes from the library and not from the store, possible? Not via Apple TV I assume but via iTunes?
Yes, you can use the iTunes library to store and play the movie. it has to run from iTunes on the computer. I am not sure I understand the last bit about apple TV.. it is simply a streamer.. (unless you have Gen1 which can store movies on the hard disk). The Apple TV connects to your iTunes running on a computer. The TC has nothing to do with this, other than being part of the network.
Note the TC has no media extensions nor is it media aware.. it is a dumb wireless router.. that is all.
    - I want to access movies located on the external hard drive from anywhere in my home network, possible?
Access movies is fine.. read Apple prescribed method.
iTunes: How to share music and video
There is a lot of links to home sharing.
Again the TC is irrelevant to this, other than it ties the network.. but a switch or any other router could be doing that.. so the TC is of no particular use here.
For backups just setup TM in the computer to backup to the TC.. that is standard part of the setup.. and there is nothing particular in the TC required for that.. other than it plugs into the main router.. so exists as part of the network.

  • External USB drive won't mount without running Repair Disk

I have a Seagate external USB hard drive.  It's a 1TB FreeAgent drive  that's USB powered.  I use this to share data across several computers.  Every time I connect the drive to my MacBook Pro, it does not mount.  If I try to mount it, I'm told to "try running first aid".
So, I run repair disk, and then it will mount.  I just did this, and Repair Disk reported "The volume /dev/disk1s1 appears to be OK".
Any help on this matter would be appreciated.  It is formated NTFS, and I have an NTFS driver installed, if that makes any difference.
    Thank you!

  • HT1349 How can I obtain an original receipt for a Time Capsule (external hard drive back up) that was stolen?  I want to get the serial number of the device.

How can I obtain a receipt for the purchase of my Time Capsule back up external drive.  My drive was stolen and I am trying to find the serial number of the device.

Unless you registered it, for warranty purposes, with the manufacturer, there's no way.
Or if you have the box it came in, the box may have the S/N.

  • Time Capsule and USB Drive

Hi,  I have a 2TB Time Capsule which is working fine with time machine.  Recently I added an USB drive to increase the storage, the USB Drive is connected and shows in airport utility, however time machine does not appaer to be using it.  Are there any addtioanal steps to complete to bring the USB drive into the backups ?

Assuming that the USB drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)......
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) on your Mac
    Open Time Machine
Insure that the USB drive is configured as a destination for Time Machine backups
If it is not, click Add or Remove Disks
Click the USB drive to highlight it
    Click Use Disk
Time Machine will now backup to the USB disk, and alternate disks if you have other disks selected as Time Machine backup destinations.

  • Time Capsule Problem USB Drive Windows 7

    Hello all,
Let me apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, but I am having trouble accessing a NTFS formatted USB hard drive connected to my Time capsule (firmware 7.4.2) using Windows 7 Ultimate 64. The drive itself works fine as I am able to access it when it is plugged in directly via USB.
Also, I can see the drive in the 'disks' tab in my AirPort Utility. In the file sharing pane, I set 'Secure shared disks with device password', disallowed guest access, and checked the 'share disks over WAN' box.
Then I go to Network browser and click on the icon and name of the time capsule, then a Windows Security window pops up and asks for credentials to connect to the time capsule.
The first account listed is my computer name/user name, but when I enter the device password, access is denied. What user name or password should I use?? Thank you in advance for any advise.

    Hello again,
Well I plugged in a USB drive which is FAT32 formatted, Airport Utility was able to correctly see the size and label of the drive, but alas, the Windows Security password box pop up again and I still am not sure where I am supposed to set the proper credentials in order to access the drive.

  • Time Capsule, AEBS+USB drive, Linux server: Which system for Time Machine?

I'm planning to get a new Macbook Pro, and upgrading my iMac in the near future. In making the big leap to Leopard, I am going to upgrade my router to at least the AEBS. But I'm not sure what the best way is to take advantage of the Time Machine function.
Here's my take on the situation:
    Time Capsule
    Pros: all in one solution
Cons: I'm stuck if one day I need a bigger drive, or need to replace it.
    AEBS+USB drive
Pros: Easy way to upgrade/replace drive if needed
    Cons: Extra device needed
Using a drive on my Linux fileserver
Pros: Easy way to upgrade/replace drive(s) if needed, can set up RAID1 for extra redundancy
Cons: Not officially supported, but apparently can use the "defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1" tweak to get this going.
    Which would you do?

Assuming that the USB drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)......
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) on your Mac
    Open Time Machine
Insure that the USB drive is configured as a destination for Time Machine backups
If it is not, click Add or Remove Disks
Click the USB drive to highlight it

Time Machine will now backup to the USB disk, and alternate disks if you have other disks selected as Time Machine backup destinations.

  • External USB Drive Issues. PC can see it but My MAC cannot.

I have this External USB HD. I used to have it plugged into my MAC, it worked fine the entire time I had it plugged in. I took it off to save some files from my PC, everything saved fine. I tried to plug it back into my MAC and I get nothing. I tried plugging it back into the PC and it sees everything just fine.
    How can I fix this???????

If the drive ever worked on either system, it's not a matter of drivers. If you could see the files saved from the Mac to the drive when you first plugged it into Windows, the problem was probably caused by Windows. Because of the fact that Windows and Mac OS X use different file systems natively, if one was used to format the drive it may not 'play nice' with the other. Most external drives meant to be read by more than one OS are FAT32, which Windows can write to for sure and Mac OS X ought to be able to write to as an external drive. If the external drive's controller does anything to make the drive specially compatible with one OS or another, it could be mucking things up. If you can still view the drive in Windows, see what file system it says it's using.

  • My external hard drive won't upload my iPhoto pics to my mac mavericks

I uploaded all my iphotos onto an external hard drive recently, before I got a cable replaced in my Mac Mavericks (which would have deleted all my files/photos etc.) , but when I went to put all my photos back on to my laptop -it wouldn't let me.
When I plug in the external hard drive, the IPhoto app pops up and nothing else. It then says I need to quit the app and upgrade to the new iPhoto . The only way of doing this is to upgrade to Yosemite which I don't want after reading all the ghastly negative reviews about Yosemite!!
Also no one appears happy with the new "photos" app. One review stating, "it's one step backwards and one step sideways !!!"
It appears that Apple are forcing it's customers to upgrade without options or pushing customers towards the iCloud??.
Any suggestions on how to get my photographs back on my laptop without upgrading to Yosemite or iCloud? Could I install Photoshop Elements and maybe that would resolve the issue?. The laptop and external hard drive only appear to be recognizing the iPhoto app and nothing else. I cannot put them in a file of any sort.

I'm afraid your post isn't clear.
I uploaded all my iphotos onto an external hard drive recently, before I got a cable replaced in my Mac Mavericks(which would have deleted all my files/photos etc.) , but when I went to put all my photos back on to my laptop -it wouldn't let me.
Exactly what did you move and how? And how are you trying to put things back. Where exactly does it breakdown?
When I plug in the external hard drive, the IPhoto app pops up and nothing else. It then says I need to quit the app and upgrade to the new iPhoto
But this will not have happened unless you also upgraded something else - like the OS for instance. Can you give us the exact error message you get?

  • Time Machine external USB drive not available at boot

I have a late 2012 iMac running Mavericks 10.4.9. I use Time Machine with a Toshiba 3TB external drive.  The Toshiba drive is usually left powered up.  Every time I boot the iMac and try to force a backup, Time Machine reports the Toshiba disk is not available.  When I open Time Machine preferences, the Toshiba drive does not show until I power-cycle it and re-select it.   Also occasionally it reports that I did not eject it properly.  But it NEVER shows in Devices or on my desk top (like a thumb-drive does for example) so I wouldn't know how to eject it anyway.
Any ideas on where I am going wrong?
    Thanks!

I also have a MacBook Pro with Leopard. I have a new 500GB Lacie d2 safe external drive that my computer recognizes but Time machine does not. Formating the disk in journaled Mac OS Extended format does not solve the problem. Lacie says they are working on it. Anyone have any ideas?
