Time capsule file sharing, store mac and pc data

Hi All,
I am sure that there exists numerous questions similar to mine, however, I would like to be sure. I have a PC, macbook pro, and air port time capsule.
What I want to do:
1) I will move the contents of Time machine in an external HDD to new time capsule
2) I will backup my macbook pro via time machine using time capsule (this is ok)
3) I would like to store my PC data to the time capsule
Then,
a) I would like to share either mac file or PC file in Time capsule to the other users, may use mac or PC
b) Finally I would like to connect it from outside of office (I am in a university and we do not have a static IP)
I would like to learn that is it possible to do all of them with new time capsule. Indeed for the request 2, it is not necessary to back up PC data regularly, I can move data manually, I mean I do not want to use backup program for it.
I am really sorry for duplication of similar questions, however, I need help since I have started to use mac in a couple of months ago instead of using PC more that 25 years:)
My recent question was replied and it helped me, now, I extended my questions a little bit:)
Thanks for all your replies
estuans

I would like to ask you, if I connect an external HDD to USB connection of time capsule, then, is it possible to back up PC data to external HDD  using time capsule as a router. I mean I looking for possible solutions to achieve :
2) I will backup my macbook pro via time machine using time capsule (this is ok)
3) I would like to store my PC data to the time capsule
That is what Pondini recommends.. using a USB drive to the TC works fine and is treated separately to the internal disk.. but is slow.. very slow..
PC can backup to the TC.. but it cannot use MSBackup if you have home versions.. because MS decided home versions should not need network backups.. anyway MSbackup is the most horrible program.. so just buy or download a suitable backup software.. anything.. anything at all has to be better than MSbackup.
Your point 3. Is this separate to backup.. ie do you want a backup and store your data on the TC.. you can do both.. But do not rely on the TC for your backups if that is the only place you have those files.. and you cannot backup TC files to TC... well not easily and it will be excruciatingly slow.
You can use the internal disk of the TC.. what you cannot do is partition the drive or make it functionally separate from Mac backups and that can lead to issues.. although I don't think it happens until you run out of space.. Note the use of fixed sparsebundle sizes as that can work as a parition for the Mac backups.
. Now, if I connect to an external HDD to USB port of time capsule and use time capsule as a router, is it possible to access the contents of HDD from MAC and PC,
And then, by using Icloud, can I access External HDD connected to USB port of time capsule.
Last question. How time capsule is used for PC
Either PC or Mac can access the hdd plugged in by USB.. but there are some issues.
1. Drive compatibility is not straight forward.
2. The drive can spin down and never spin up again without a restart.
3. You sometimes need to use a powered hub even with powered drive. The USB port is slow and underpowered.
4. The drive must be formatted on the Mac.. TC only has FAT32 or HFS+ formats.. and the FAT32 is poor. The fact that you use HFS+ is not an issue but the PC may still have issues with large files. It might still think the drive is FAT32 when it isn't.
BTMM with iCloud will work with both internal and USB drives plugged into the TC. But only from Mac. PC cannot access anything.
How time capsule is used for PC
I do not understand the point of the question.. all your questions are about using the TC with PC..
The TC is a dumb as a board hard disk inside a router.. nothing more.. you use it same as any router with a lousy USB drive plugged in.. slowly.. without brains.. what more did you want??

  • Mac Mini Server and Time Capsule, File Sharing Issue

    Setup:
MacMini Server, Time Capsule, 2 Macs connected.
All Macs use the time capsule to backup.
    Problem:
I can't use filesharing from over the internet anymore to connect to my server.
Ports 139 and 548 seem to be reserved for the internal backupdisk of the time capsule.
The port mapping rule gets turned off.
How can i still access my files from the outside ?
If i change the filesharing ports to something else, how can i access it ?
    Anybody an idea ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
+"I can connect to my server using vpn but my workgroup shortcut in the sidebar of finder doesn't work"+
That's about right. Bonjour won't work over VPN unless you work at it. AFP548 has an article on how to achieve it if you want to go to the trouble.
+"Isn't there a way without manually connect using go?"+
You could drop desired share points into the dock. Next time you initiate a VPN connection simply click on the icon in the dock. Works for me every time.
+"Perhaps some tweaking on the vpn server side?"+
None that I'm aware of. Perhaps someone else knows a way?

  • I want to move my iTunes library to my Time Capsule for both my Mac and my husbands PC to access

I have a Mac, with various iPads and iPhones in the family and a family network running from a Time Capsule.  I wish to move my iTunes library (which is home shared and connected to iTunes Match) from my Mac to my Time Capsule as it is using a large portion of my hard drive.  I then want my husbands/childrens PCs/laptops to also connect to this one iTunes library.

The library is working in its new location?  You moved it by copying the whole iTunes folder and not by changing any preferences settings?
I haven't done anything with library sharing so I'm no expert, but you will probably want your setup so each person has their own library but you use a common source of media.  One major issue is if you are using the library on your computer, nobody else will be able to use it because the library files can only be open by one iTunes application at a time.  Some of this might be possible with Home Sharing, or you can simply keep a common pool of media and trust each other not to accidentally delete a file everybody else is using.
Another item of concern is putting this on the Time Capsule drive.  Normally that is used for backup purposes and if you have you media on there too then you have no library backup.  Yes, you can use Match but it isn't really a backup service.  E.g., if you have media stored as lossless on the computer, match doesn't store it as lossless but in reduced quality.  It also won't back up the other things in your library such as playlists.

  • Time Capsule - File sharing with accounts

I recently got a brand new Time Capsule 1 TB. I have not copied any data to the internal (Airport) disk drive yet since I have been previously using a separate USB disk drive for Time machine backups and for storing other data. When I will have time I will just copy the data from the external USB drive to the Time capsule and use the Time capsule disk also for Time machine backups (I will delete the previous Time machine backups from the USB drive), while the USB drive will remain connected to the Time capsule for extended storage.
I would like to secure my shared disk with accounts (Airport Utility ->Disks -> File Sharing -> Secure Shared Disks -> With Accounts); currently I have "With a disk password" option selected. Somewhere on the internet I've read that when I enable this feature a new directory is created for each of the user account added to the Time capsule for disk access and that the existing data is removed from the Time capsule. Also, a new folder is created in Time capsule with a name of the disk which can be used as a shared folder for all users with accounts on Time capsule.
    The questions I have are:
    1. What happens to the other external USB drive connected to Time machine when I enable the user account secutiry feature? Is the data deleted? Are user account also set for this drive?
    2. How to delete one user's data from the Time capsule after enabling user accounts access? If I delete his/her account on Time capsule, is his/her data also deleted from disk or just stays there?

this will not work. TM treats backups to locally attached drives differently to those made to networked drives. click here for information.

  • Transfer Time Capsule Files From One Mac to Another

I have a MacBook Pro that is on the blink and I can't afford to fix it right now. Can I transfer some of the files from my Time Capsule to my son's MacBook Pro?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You have a couple of options.
You could use +Migration Assistant+ to transfer your user account to the other Mac. You can select/omit the top-level folders in your home folder, but not within them. See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for details.
You could restore selected items from your backups to the other Mac. Probably your best bet would be to use Migration Assistant to transfer just your account (name and password), but omit the data files, then restore selectively via the +*Browse . . .+* option. See #17 in the FAQ.

  • Time  Capsule file sharing VS Leopard Server

I just bought a new 1 TB Time Capsule (TC). My goal was to use it as a time machine hard drive for my Leopard Server.
As soon as I start Enable File Sharing on TC, there is a conflict with the AFP Port (548) for my server. I can only do one or the other. I understand that I can change the AFP port but I don't think it is a good solution for me.
Is there others ways to reach that drive ?
    Thank you

Hello, the problem is to activate Disk Sharing. Because I have forwarded the AFP Port 548 to my Leopard OS X server in Time Capsule, as soon as I try to turn on Disk Sharing on Time Capsule I get the following message:
Enabling "Enable file sharing" conflicts with one of your part port mappings. The port mapping has been disabled. Please update its public port to continue using it.
That's the part I wish I could avoid. Changing the public port of AFP wold mean to change all external client (my family
I have tried to turn on Bonjour in the Disk pane and then turn off disk sharing and I did received a message saying to configure Airport-Time Capsule - Edit - Dynamic global Hostname. I will be trying that.
Thank you for the "Bonjour" Hint

  • Using Time Capsule with Both a Mac and Windows PC

All ... is it possible to backup both Mac and Windows computers to the same Time Capsule?  My current networked devices include:
    1 Windows 7 desktop (wireless/ethernet capable)
1 MacBook Air (wirelessly connected to home network)
1 New iPad (wirelessly connected to home network)
2 iPhone 4S (wirelessly connected to home network)
1 Airport Extreme (currently hardwired to my Windows 7 desktop)
Thoughts/comments on leveraging the Time Capsule as purely a backup storage solution for all the devices listed above?  Is it possible?  Please advise.  Thanks!

I use a backup software to save backups to the TC from windows... it is no big issue.. but the TC should never get any where near close to full.. TM takes a lot of space to work efficiently.. so make sure there is still more than enough space.. since TM will do hourly incremental backups it can grow rather quickly if you do lots of big file edits on the Mac.
Hanging a USB hard disk off a windows desktop is a better solution in lots of way.. it can be formatted native windows NTFS.. and is faster than TC without adding to network bandwidth.
But the TC is great for wireless with windows laptop same as Apple side.

  • File sharing between Macs and PCs

I'm not able to properly network a Mac and a PC laptop in my office. The Mac is running 10.4.9, the PC is running XP Service Pack 2. Here's what I'm doing:
I right-click on a Windows folder. On the "Sharing" tab I click on "Share this folder on the network."
I go over to the Mac. I try to browse the network; the PC doesn't show up. I type command-K, type in smb://[my PC name] into the box. A dialog box pops up indicating that it's trying to connect, but nothing happens.
Similarly, if I turn on Windows File Sharing on the Mac and try to go the other way (access the Mac from the PC), that doesn't work either.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks very much.
    G5 Dual 2.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I am having a similar problem getting onto a Windows network with my Mac.
    I select Finder/Go/Connect to server...
I then enter my server's address, and click on the "connect" button. I get the "connecting to server" dialog box. Then I get the "SMB/CIFS File System Authentication" dialog box. The "Workgroup or Domain" box already is filed in with the proper name, so it appears to me that I have made contact with the server. The "name" box shows up filled in with my .mac name, so I delete it and type in my Windows user name. I then fill in my Windows password, and click on the "OK" button.
Then the "connecting to server" dialog box reads "could not connect to the server because the name or password is incorrect."
I am using the same name and password that I use when I get on the netowrk with my Dell. In fact, I will plug the ethernet cable into my Dell and get onto the network. I then log off, switch the cable to my MacBook Pro, and I cannot get on.
Any thoughts on why the server is sending my MacBook Pro the "wrong name or password" message, but letting my Dell on?

  • How can i view time capsule files on another mac

I am trying to look at files backed up to my Time Capsule.  How do I do that?

Perhaps someone in the Time Capsule forum might know?  Good luck.

  • HT1218 i have a windows 8 computer that is not connecting with my time capsule wifi. my other macs and windows 7 systems do connect. is this a firmware update glitch? any suggestions?

I have a windows 8 computer that is connecting poorly via wifi and my Apple time capsule to the internet. My IMac an another windows 7 based computer are connecting fine. This started 6 days ago. And, the windows 8 machine connects well via a hard Cat-5 connection to the time capsule (I'm using that now) and worked well on a wireless netgrear system over the weekend.
I'm thinking an automatic firmware update may have caused this or perhaps i need the time capsule to use something other than a default address. Those are just guesses, but I could sure use some help. Thank you.

It is hard to figure where the issue is..
Certainly if windows updated the wireless driver that can mess things up no end..
    What update happened 6days ago?
What TC do you have.. ?? If it is flat one and you updated to 7.6.4 do a factory reset and reconfigure.
If that doesn't work roll the firmware back to 7.6.1 or even 7.5.2 as these are generally superior to windows.
There is no update for TC gen5 yet.

  • File sharing between Mac and PC CS5

While our graphic designer, who uses a Mac, is on maternity leave, I am doing whatever graphics-type work we have on my work PC. I have CS5 and so does the Mac (I have checked multiple times, we both have CS5; NOT CS5.5 on either machine). I cannot open many of her InDesign files because it says that I don't have some of the same plug-ins. I have tried just copying her plug-ins, but an error occurs when I try to copy them. I realize some things may be missing, but I should at least be able to open those files. We am I missing? Or will upgrading both to CS5.5 solve this problem?
This is very frustrating as I can't really get anything done moving around between offices and computers all day; this is why we have a shared drive system. Please let me know what we can do.

If in doubt about an InDesign document version, you can use my IDentify script: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4071273#4071273 (if only to make absolutely sure these files are, in fact, '5 files, and not '5.5s).
It's strange & somewhat worrying that your InDesign won't update -- the latest version is 7.0.4 and that's what the updater ought to install. HOWEVER, I do not believe InDesign would refuse to load a document from an updated version. That just can't be right.
So, please try my little script. Just in case this co-worker happened to have the newer version somewhere at home, or something like that.

  • File sharing on mac and password protecting?

    Hi
I am trying to share pictures from my imac onto the home network so everyone connected to my wifi can access them,
I am running a mid 2011 imac with mountain lion
Ive selected the folder to be shared from system preferences, but is there any way to password protect it so i have more control over who in my network i allow to access it?
I hope i do not have to start forking out for more expensive equipment,
    PLEASE HELP

It is password protected based on who you shared it out to.
For those who have accounts on your Mac, you can share it to them. They must log in as themselves and then will have access.
For those that don't have an account, or if you wish to limit everyone, just create a Sharing Only user (New Person in the Sharing prefs). Everyone will have to log in as that user to gain access to the folder.

  • Hello. I have downloaded my saved configuration from my Time Capsule to my new mac and now I have 2 libraries. Which one should I delete

Libraries that run my Mac I mean. One is located: Macintosh HD/Library (7,58 Go), the other is located: Macintosh HD/System/Library (6,32 Go) this one is the most recent
    Thank You

You definitely need to resurrect the old password associated with the Apple ID you used to purchase the music.
    Go here: https://iforgot.apple.com
An email will be sent to the email address associated with that account with instructions regarding resetting that Apple ID's password.
If you no longer have access to that email, the resolution to this problem becomes considerably more difficult. In that event you would need to contact iTunes Support and explain your dilemma.
