Time capsule files disappear

I use time capsule 1TG and copied some files onto it like using external hard disk. Everything was fine at the beginning, but one day all files disappeared, can't see any files name on tc.
The files are not really gone, they are still on my tc because I used spotlight to search file names and the file showed up again. But after reboot MBP, all files on TC disappear again, but I am sure the data are still there, just can't see file names.
Anyone has clues about this? Many thanks in advance for help!

Buggy TC. You just need to restart it.
Let me know how you get on.

  • TIME CAPSULE FILES DISAPPEARED

I have did a lot of movement of equipment and computers and moving my Time Capsule.  Trying to set all the equipment back up, I have run into a problem of not being able to access my files on my Time Capsule.  It is an older Time Capsule (1TB, 2008/2009) and I was only using it store large files and documents I did not use often.  Honestly, I have not tried to access the TC until y wife wanted to put all her music on the TC to save spacc on her MacBook.
The Time Capsule was just networked as a device off of my current Router but now it is connected (Ethernet) to my iMac only.  The actually server icon shows and the folder I had everything under shows but nothing comes up inside the folder.  It shows connected and this is the errors I have seen thus far and other info:
    * TC is connected through the extra ethernet port, not the WAN port, to my iMac
    * I set the TC as 3 different Network Mode settings (Off, Create wireless...., Extend wireless....)
    * Router Mode was set in Off (Bridge Mode)
    * Created an entire different user/pw just in case user was issue, all same results
    * Software is up to date
    * Under "Get Info" Unknown user shows up with "Read & Write"; Everyone has "No Access"
    * I added a user on the Time Capsule settings
    * Cannot add or change users under "Get Info".  I get "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission."
    * Says I have 200GBs left, as if the info is still there....
I have googled and searched the internet but cannot find anyting to help my situation.....
    Help, Please.....

    Hi, glad you solved it.
There should be a warning message pop up when you activate USER accounts that all previous backup are going to disappear.. Of course in Lion.. anything can happen.
New Issue:  I can only access the TC from my iMac.  I removed it from the Home Router (Motorola Surfboard) because they did not want to play nice together.  I could not use it as Extened or Create a new network (not sure if that makes sense).  I have not tried to link it as neither though....
Time Capsule can join to a wireless network.. but it doesn't play nice with wireless from other brands.
    The TC should be bridged.
So if you use lion.. I recommend to download and use the 5.6 utility.. I sure this is possible with 6 or 6.1 utility but I don't know how.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to manual setup, and internet tab.. connection sharing.. and select off bridge mode.
Then plug the TC into the existing router.. (it has to be a router not a pure modem for bridge).
It will then pick up an ip from the router .. you can access the TC then either directly through ethernet or wireless on the TC.. or via the network on the surfboard.. it is now one flat network.
    Cheers
    LaP Dog!!

  • Time Capsule file permissions

Whenever I copy a file to the time capsule (either via finder by moving it there, or via terminal with cp) the file permissions of the file end up with -rwxrwxrwx, independently whether the file was an executable, or whether it only had reading permissions for all or group. Running chmod on the Time Capsule files has no effect.
This is really silly and makes the Airport Disk sharing useless. This way I will never share files with my friends over the Airport disk because the files loose their property and all files are executables at the end.
Is there a way to mount or configure the Time Capsule so that it conserves the file permissions?
I am aware that time capsule cannot handle different users, but at least it should conserve the file permissions. I imagine it could be like a scp or ftp of files to another server. My files on the other server will not have my user name, but at least they conserve the file permissions. A -rw-r-r- file will still be a -rw-r-r- file even if I copy it 10 times from one server to another.
I would lik to encourage Apple to take this problem seriously and provide an update for this issue. So many other Apple products are just so well integrated in a networking environment, even if it is a heterogeneous one, but not Time Capsule with this flaw.
    Best wishes,
    Reto

Agree, this is a serious flaw, that makes the device very dangerous to use as a central server for shared files, for example, the family's photograph collection. Since there appears to be no way to write protect anything, how can I ensure the files don't get modified or deleted?
    Here's a nasty case I am seeing:
We unload a digital camera onto the TC's disk, then someone goes to their iPhoto app, and adds these files to their iPhoto library. Then they do something simple, like rotate the photos, and voila! The master file on the TC has now been modified! Horrible.

You should be able to change the permissions on the files.. this is yet another bungle by Mavericks I suspect.

Sometimes it is because you Migrated wrongly.

It is not up to Mavericks because sadly the guy who wrote all this great info died recently.

  • I deleted time capsule files that were old, but now they won't delete from the trash

I deleted some time capsule files from the drive I am using for time machine.  It placed them in the trash, but it won't delete them.  It is asking if I want to delete only locked files or if I want to delete all files.  I have tried both, but they are still showing up in the trash.  It won't remove them.  Does anyone have any suggestions, as I do not know what else to do.  By the way I tried holding the option key and clicking empty trash and that did not work either.

Are these files being used by Time Machine. If so, this is how to delete files from a Time Machine backup. You can not delete them using Finder. Mac 101: Time Machine
Deleting data from a Time Machine backup
To delete all backups of one or more items from a Time Machine backup, follow these steps:
Click the Time Machine icon on your Dock to enter the Time Machine restore interface.
Click on the item you would like to delete. Command-click to select multiple items.
Control-click (or right click) the highlighted item(s) and select "Delete All Backups of..." from the contextual menu, or select "Delete all backups of..." from the Action Item menu.
Authenticate with an administrator password when prompted.
Important:  Do not use the Finder to move to the items to the Trash, or to move or delete items in your Time Machine backup repository. The folder containing your Time Machine backup repository is called "Backups.backupdb" and is located on the external disk or Time Capsule you have chosen in Time Machine preferences.

  • Can I access time capsule file without using imac

can I access time capsule file without using imac

From a time machine backup? No. If you mean just a regular file stored on there? Not directly. There are a couple of apps out there where you can indirectly get to a file but it's a pain. If you have need of accessing a file both from the mac and the iPad then I suggest DropBox. You get 2GB free and it's a good way to share information between machines and devices.

Sorry, you have lost me since it appears that you have two completely separate issues here.
All that I can suggest is you start over and try to set up the Time Capsule again first...and then, once that is done and the Time Capsule is working correctly on the network....then, try to troubleshoot the separate Time Machine issue.
If you decide that you want to do this, we'll need some basic information:
Make and model number of your modem?
You are using OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), correct?

  • Internet - AirPort Extreme (b/g) - Time Capsule - File Server

I've got a small office network where files are served off a Mac mini, and iMacs connected via 802.11n wifi to the wired mini via Time Capsule. I have a spare AEBS (b/g) that I was thinking of setting it up for iPhone and guest access of internet. To keep the mini and iMacs secure, the set-up would be:
Internet -> AirPort Extreme (b/g) -> Time Capsule -> Mac mini and iMacs
The only issue I'm contemplating - the slower Ethernet ports on the Extreme - which I don't think is a problem for connecting to the Internet. Is there anything else I should be concerned about regarding network performance?
Thanks in advance for the collective wisdom!
    Message was edited by: openarchitecture

That would work. The Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is faster than your internet connection so you shouldn't have a problem.

  • Mac Mini Server and Time Capsule, File Sharing Issue

    Setup:
MacMini Server, Time Capsule, 2 Macs connected.
All Macs use the time capsule to backup.
    Problem:
I can't use filesharing from over the internet anymore to connect to my server.
Ports 139 and 548 seem to be reserved for the internal backupdisk of the time capsule.
The port mapping rule gets turned off.
How can i still access my files from the outside ?
If i change the filesharing ports to something else, how can i access it ?
    Anybody an idea ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
+"I can connect to my server using vpn but my workgroup shortcut in the sidebar of finder doesn't work"+
That's about right. Bonjour won't work over VPN unless you work at it. AFP548 has an article on how to achieve it if you want to go to the trouble.
+"Isn't there a way without manually connect using go?"+
You could drop desired share points into the dock. Next time you initiate a VPN connection simply click on the icon in the dock. Works for me every time.
+"Perhaps some tweaking on the vpn server side?"+
None that I'm aware of. Perhaps someone else knows a way?

  • Time Capsule - File sharing with accounts

I recently got a brand new Time Capsule 1 TB. I have not copied any data to the internal (Airport) disk drive yet since I have been previously using a separate USB disk drive for Time machine backups and for storing other data. When I will have time I will just copy the data from the external USB drive to the Time capsule and use the Time capsule disk also for Time machine backups (I will delete the previous Time machine backups from the USB drive), while the USB drive will remain connected to the Time capsule for extended storage.
I would like to secure my shared disk with accounts (Airport Utility ->Disks -> File Sharing -> Secure Shared Disks -> With Accounts); currently I have "With a disk password" option selected. Somewhere on the internet I've read that when I enable this feature a new directory is created for each of the user account added to the Time capsule for disk access and that the existing data is removed from the Time capsule. Also, a new folder is created in Time capsule with a name of the disk which can be used as a shared folder for all users with accounts on Time capsule.
    The questions I have are:
    1. What happens to the other external USB drive connected to Time machine when I enable the user account secutiry feature? Is the data deleted? Are user account also set for this drive?
    2. How to delete one user's data from the Time capsule after enabling user accounts access? If I delete his/her account on Time capsule, is his/her data also deleted from disk or just stays there?

this will not work. TM treats backups to locally attached drives differently to those made to networked drives. click here for information.

  • AirPort Extreme with 3T time capsule file security question

Right now I am using a MacMini with an external HD as a file server.  I'm thinking g of using the new AirPort Extreme with 3T time capsule to do the same tho g (while also extended my wifi reach).
With the Mac mini I have fine control over who gets to see and do what to which folders and files.  It seems that with the AirPort Extreme thee is no notion of permissions or access control -- if you can get on the wireless you can access the files.  That is extremely insecure.
Is my understanding correct?  Is there no way to secure files hosted on an AirPort Extreme so only certain users can access them??
    - john

Are there any instructions for how to format and set HFS+ user permissions on the AP Extreme's HDD?
For the formatting part, you will need to temporarily connect the drive to your Mac, and then, use the Disk Utility (a part of the OS X operating system) to partition and format the drive. You should find this utility in the \Applications\Utilities folder. For HFS+, choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" for the Format option.
For assigning user permissions using accounts, you will need to use the AirPort Utility.
    Run the AirPort Utility
Select the Extreme, and then, click on Edit.
    Select the Disks tab.
Select the HDD in the Partitions window.
Choose "With accounts" as the Secure Shared Disks option.
Click on the "+" button to add user accounts.
For each account desired, enter the Account Name, Password, and File Sharing Access type.
    Click Save.
Click Update to write the new configuration information to the base station and wait for the station to restart.

  • Need help understanding Time Capsule file structure and how to get it back

I have the original Time Capsule on which I backup both my Mac Pro and my wife’s Macbook. When Snow Leopard came out, I successfully used the ‘Restore from Time Machine’ feature on my Mac Pro so I know it has worked. However, my wife’s MacBook harddrive died the other day and I was trying to do the ‘Restore from Time Machine’ and all it would find was a backup from April (when I put her in a new larger drive). Time Machine would not find any backup files newer that April. She stated that she had seen the the Time Machine backup notices regularly and as recent as the day the haddrive died (Nov. 23) so I figured that I should have no problem. Here is what I have found in my trouble shooting and what leads to my questions below.
This is the file structure I found: (note that our ID’s are ‘Denise’ and ‘John’)
*Time Capsule* (the drive as listed in my Finder window sidebar under ‘shared’)
    >Folder called ‘Time Capsule’ (when logged in as either ‘Denise’ or ‘John’)
    >>Denise Sparsebundle
    >>>Backup of Denise’s iBook (mounted image)
    >>>>Folder called ‘Backups.backupdb’
    >>>>>Folder called ‘Denise’s iBook
    >>>>>>Single folder with old April backup (not the right files)
    >>John Sparsebundle
    >>>Backup of John’s Mac Pro (mounted image)
    >>>>Folder called ‘Backups.backupdb’
    >>>>>Folder called ‘John’s Mac Pro’
    >>>>>>Folders containing all my backup files
    >Folder Called ‘Denise’ (if logged as ‘Denise’)
    >>Denise’s Sparsebundle (a disk image)
    >>>Backup of Denise iBook (the mounted image. Name from old machine)
    >>>>Backups.Backupdb
    >>>>>Denise’s iBook (Contains the backup I need)
    >Folder Called ‘John’ (if logged in as ‘John’)
    >> (empty)
For some reason, my wife’s backup files are stored within a folder located at the top level of the Time Capsule drive called ‘Denise’, however, mine are within a folder called ‘Time Capsule’ which is at the same level as the ‘Denise’ folder.
For some reason, when trying to use Time Machine to recover, it bypasses the top level ‘Denise’ folder which contains the correct files and goes into the ‘Time Capsule’ folder and finds the outdated backup files.
I would assume that both my backup files and my wife’s should be at the same level of the Time Capsule.
I was eventually able to use Migration Assistant to recover the files after installing a fresh OS and mounting the correct Sparsebundle image.
So, my question, how do I get this fixed so that if I have to recover a drive with Time Capsule, it will find the correct files.
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help.

well John, first can you clarify if you are on 10.4.8 as your profile suggests ? if so, i'm wondering how you can use TM at all because TM was introduced with Leo. if you're not on 10.4.8, please update your profile. if you could, please also indicate details of your machine such as available RAM, processor, etc.
second, what OS is your wife's machine running ?
third, i frankly don't know too much about TM's file structure or if there indeed is such a thing as the correct one. however, i do know that it is best to leave TM to do its thing (as long as it's working). FWIW, though off-topic, you may want to have a look at this read for further information.
last but not least, i see TM backups to my TC only as a part of my backup strategy. the backbone of my strategy is to create bootable clone of my startup disk(s) using e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner on a regular basis. while TM is capable of doing a full system restore, i don't trust it as much as a working clone. i use TM to retrieve a file i accidentally trashed a week ago but you cannot boot from a TM backup if your startup disk goes belly up.
If I have missed this information in either the FAQs or the Troubleshooting article, I would greatly appreciate being pointed to it .
i expect you didn't miss anything and i'm sorry you didn't find any help there. perhaps if Pondini (author of the FAQ and troubleshooting user tips) reads this thread, you will get the necessary advice on the file structure and more besides.
    good luck to you !

  • Time Capsule file transfer - why so slow?

I've got a simultaneous dual-band Time Capsule serving as a router for my network, which includes a newer Macbook Pro and an older PowerPC G5.
When I transfer a 2GB file directly from the G5 to the MBP (this is of course going through the TC as the router), it takes about 95 seconds, which is 22 MB/s or 172 Mbps if you prefer.
When I transfer the same file from the G5 to the Time Capsule's drive, it takes about 190 seconds, about 11 MB/s or 86 Mbps.
Why is the Time Capsule's drive so much slower? Are these speeds typical for the TC, for example, when you are using Time Machine to back up? (I don't use Time Machine myself, because I'm running Tiger.)
When I hook the two computers directly to each other using ethernet, the same file takes 80 seconds to transfer (25 MB/s or 205 Mpbs).

Well, that is a disappointment. And somewhat puzzling, given that TC is supposed to be a backup solution. You'd think it would be fast. I don't think the drive hardware itself is slow, given what I've read about them (Hitachi Deskstar?).
I have the book you mention and looked up the quote. It also says, "This is partly due to inefficiencies in copying many small files in Apple Filing Protocol
(AFP), and partly due to the low-power, but adequate, processor in the Extreme N (both models)."
The AFP possibly explains why my G5 (Tiger) is slower at writing to the Time Capsule than my husband's Macbook Pro (Leopard).

  • HT4522 I would like to delete some time capsule files that I erased from my mac. Please and thanks

Please help me deleting some files that are in my time capsule which I have erased from my computer
    thank you

Since you deleted the files on your Mac, Time Machine will eventually delete them automatically from the Time Capsule, so you really need do nothing.
If you really do want to delete the files right now, open Time Machine, wait for it to load and use the timeline on the right side of the window to go back to a date when the files were still on your Mac.
Use the Finder like interface to navigate to the specific file that you want to delete and click on it to highlight it
Click the gear icon at the top of Time Machine window and click "Delete all backups of  xxxxxxxx"
Do the same for other files that you want to delete.
Click Cancel at the lower left of the window to return to your normal desktop
