Time Capsule files remote access on Microsoft windows 7

Hi,
I have been always a Microsoft Windows user (currently with a laptop and a desktop) but now I have bought a MacBook air. I am planning to acquire a time capsule mainly for 2 reasons: backup my hard drive data (Stored in Windows 7 computers) and enable remote access away from home (my personal cloud ?).
In order to acquire a Time capsule, do I have to buy additional equipment such as the Airport Extreme ? At the current moment I have a standard wifi router supplied by my local ISP.
I have read many posts related with my problem but almost all of them are addressed to Mac systems. Please can help me if it is possible to enable this (or any) solution so that my Win7 laptop can remotely access to the time capsule.
Thank you very much from a very novice mac user.

You cannot remotely access the TC from windows.. safely.
Let me explain. The TC really only offers AFP for remote access.. all the normal formats are missing. TC is not a NAS.. if you want a NAS buy Synology or QNAP, not TC. They will happily work with both Mac and Windows. A TC will not.
The work arounds are using vpn.. buy a VPN router to replace the ISP one.. The TC will be in bridge mode.
Some people make suggestions of using SMB (windows file protocol) over the internet.. this is very very unsafe.. SMB is blocked by the vast majority of ISP because it is so unsafe.. but people use it on non-standard ports. These will eventually be discovered and hacked. You have almost zero security.
You really need to use the Air or some device that uses AFP.. remember apple build their stuff for apple.. with the occasional glance at the rest of the world.
TC is a combined router and hard disk but that is of no help to you. It will simply not allow SMB access on the WAN port.

    As described above.
I do not own neither a Mac nor an iOS devices. May I still be able to use all features of Time Capsule, including remote access over the internet?

You will have setup issues.. as the latest AC model requires a Mac or iOS device.. eventually apple will release a windows version of the utility.. and the current one does partly work but Apple seem in no hurry.
You can find a Mac or iPad equipped friend to do the setup.. once setup the Windows computer can use it.
BUTT you cannot access it from remote..
Not with windows. You need BTMM and iCloud account. AFAIK even with those you cannot reach the TC.
You can do it manually.. using a vpn. Buy a proper vpn router and use a vpn client on the windows computer.. the TC would be in bridge to the network..
Apple really did not make this for windows.. and SMB access is only provided on LAN access not WAN.

  • Configure Time Capsule for remote access

I have a second generation 2TB Time Capsule, operating on Bridge Mode, connected to an Arris Touchstone Telephony Gateway TG862. I want to configure Back to My Mac to be able to access the Time Capsule remotely.
I've followed the basic steps and get this message from the settings in the iCloud Pane in System Preferences: Setup router for better performance. And this details: Contact your ISP for a different server address.
I've tried Google and OpenDNS, and also disabling the Firewall in the Arris router, and still can't access the Time Capsule remotely.
I also tried disabling NAT and seeing it up as Bridged in the router, and disabling Wireless as well, trying to configure the Time Capsule to serve NAT and DHCP to no avail.
Any steps I'm missing or a whole different approach I should take to be able to access my Time Capsule remotely?
Thank you in advance for any help.

You will have to learn how to port forward in your Arris Gateway..
    Arris Touchstone Telephony Gateway TG862
The easiest way is to simply google it.
    http://forums.comcast.com/t5/Home-Networking-Router-WiFi/Port-forwarding-in-Arri s-TG852G-CT/td-p/954929
It certainly appears to be problematic.. which is not surprising... If you really need remote access I would request a pure modem from your ISP (Comcast??) or simply replace it with one in the list. You will need to turn off any inbuilt firewall in the router and use DMZ perhaps to the TC.
There is a few posts on youtube which also might help you. eg
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8tKBHvCz_0
But I am on ADSL so my setup is too unlike yours to really tell you much.
If you want to test something.. let me recommend you load Teamviewer onto a computer in your LAN.. set the computer up to never sleep and then try and reach it using Teamviewer from WAN connection.. if that works.. let me recommend you stick to something of this type. Unless you are prepared to change modems with your ISP I doubt you will solve it.
If teamviewer fails nothing is going to work.. you need to at least turn off the firewalls in both the computer and the router..
If you don't want to leave a computer running 24/7 to accept incoming requests.. then use WD MyCloud or similar type NAS.. which are far better designed for remote access than Apple routers.. or use a cloud storage and keep files you might want there.

Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • Can I access time capsule file without using imac

can I access time capsule file without using imac

From a time machine backup? No. If you mean just a regular file stored on there? Not directly. There are a couple of apps out there where you can indirectly get to a file but it's a pain. If you have need of accessing a file both from the mac and the iPad then I suggest DropBox. You get 2GB free and it's a good way to share information between machines and devices.

  • Setting Up Time Capsule for External Access

    Hello all,
I am trying to set up my Time Capsule to be accessed without local Wi-Fi. I can use Back to My Mac to access the Time Capsule from my iMac, but not from my iPhone as Back to My Mac isn't intergrated into iOS. I use File Browser on my iPhone to access my TC from LAN, and it seems likely the TC can also be accessed through 4G using File Browser, too.
My first question is, can the Time Capsule be accessed through the internet (by port forwarding or something)?
Second question if the first is possible, how do I do so? (step by step instructions please)
I have the latest model of Time Capsule and AirPort Utility.
    Thanks!
         - Noah

Filebrowser can be used to remotely access the TC.
There are instructions in the filebrowser website.. have you tried those?
    http://www.stratospherix.com/support/gsw_timecapsule.php?page=6remote
The one area where I think you might have issues is global domain name.. as that has been problematic.
You really need a static public IP from your ISP for this to be successful.
See Tesserax doco on remote access especially the global domain instructions.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3413
There is a hugely better method BTW..
Buy a vpn router and substitute that for the Time Capsule.. which can then be bridged behind the router.
VPN client is built into iOS and every mainline OS available. It is robust and has far superior security.
Note carefully the method you are going to use with iphone is opening your TC to attack. They have hidden the SMB port, but in reality.. any hacker will one day do a port scan on you and find it open.. no matter what port it is translated to.. at that point your password will be the only thing stopping access to outsider.. and they can often get around that.. or mount Man in the Middle type attack, since passwords in SMB are not secure.
Not that I think a hacker is going to waste their time doing it.. but it is just so you know.. it is fundamentally wrong.

  • Time Capsule - File sharing with accounts

I recently got a brand new Time Capsule 1 TB. I have not copied any data to the internal (Airport) disk drive yet since I have been previously using a separate USB disk drive for Time machine backups and for storing other data. When I will have time I will just copy the data from the external USB drive to the Time capsule and use the Time capsule disk also for Time machine backups (I will delete the previous Time machine backups from the USB drive), while the USB drive will remain connected to the Time capsule for extended storage.
I would like to secure my shared disk with accounts (Airport Utility ->Disks -> File Sharing -> Secure Shared Disks -> With Accounts); currently I have "With a disk password" option selected. Somewhere on the internet I've read that when I enable this feature a new directory is created for each of the user account added to the Time capsule for disk access and that the existing data is removed from the Time capsule. Also, a new folder is created in Time capsule with a name of the disk which can be used as a shared folder for all users with accounts on Time capsule.
    The questions I have are:
    1. What happens to the other external USB drive connected to Time machine when I enable the user account secutiry feature? Is the data deleted? Are user account also set for this drive?
    2. How to delete one user's data from the Time capsule after enabling user accounts access? If I delete his/her account on Time capsule, is his/her data also deleted from disk or just stays there?

this will not work. TM treats backups to locally attached drives differently to those made to networked drives. click here for information.

If the drive can be accessed in local lan, then it can be accessed from internet assuming you have setup using one of the remote access methods.

  • Time Capsule file permissions

Whenever I copy a file to the time capsule (either via finder by moving it there, or via terminal with cp) the file permissions of the file end up with -rwxrwxrwx, independently whether the file was an executable, or whether it only had reading permissions for all or group. Running chmod on the Time Capsule files has no effect.
This is really silly and makes the Airport Disk sharing useless. This way I will never share files with my friends over the Airport disk because the files loose their property and all files are executables at the end.
Is there a way to mount or configure the Time Capsule so that it conserves the file permissions?
I am aware that time capsule cannot handle different users, but at least it should conserve the file permissions. I imagine it could be like a scp or ftp of files to another server. My files on the other server will not have my user name, but at least they conserve the file permissions. A -rw-r-r- file will still be a -rw-r-r- file even if I copy it 10 times from one server to another.
I would lik to encourage Apple to take this problem seriously and provide an update for this issue. So many other Apple products are just so well integrated in a networking environment, even if it is a heterogeneous one, but not Time Capsule with this flaw.
    Best wishes,
    Reto

Agree, this is a serious flaw, that makes the device very dangerous to use as a central server for shared files, for example, the family's photograph collection. Since there appears to be no way to write protect anything, how can I ensure the files don't get modified or deleted?
    Here's a nasty case I am seeing:
We unload a digital camera onto the TC's disk, then someone goes to their iPhoto app, and adds these files to their iPhoto library. Then they do something simple, like rotate the photos, and voila! The master file on the TC has now been modified! Horrible.

  • I deleted time capsule files that were old, but now they won't delete from the trash

I deleted some time capsule files from the drive I am using for time machine.  It placed them in the trash, but it won't delete them.  It is asking if I want to delete only locked files or if I want to delete all files.  I have tried both, but they are still showing up in the trash.  It won't remove them.  Does anyone have any suggestions, as I do not know what else to do.  By the way I tried holding the option key and clicking empty trash and that did not work either.

Are these files being used by Time Machine. If so, this is how to delete files from a Time Machine backup. You can not delete them using Finder. Mac 101: Time Machine
Deleting data from a Time Machine backup
To delete all backups of one or more items from a Time Machine backup, follow these steps:
Click the Time Machine icon on your Dock to enter the Time Machine restore interface.
Click on the item you would like to delete. Command-click to select multiple items.
Control-click (or right click) the highlighted item(s) and select "Delete All Backups of..." from the contextual menu, or select "Delete all backups of..." from the Action Item menu.
Authenticate with an administrator password when prompted.
Important:  Do not use the Finder to move to the items to the Trash, or to move or delete items in your Time Machine backup repository. The folder containing your Time Machine backup repository is called "Backups.backupdb" and is located on the external disk or Time Capsule you have chosen in Time Machine preferences.

How do I correct this to download iTunes so it will run?

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

You need to give us a lot more info.
I presume the MBA and the TC are the combo that doesn't work, although you don't clearly state that.
If the ipad and TC work.. are you sure the ipad is connected via the TC and not 3G network?
If it is then the TC itself is fine and the issue might be setup on the MBA.. although if the MBA works with other routers.. that rather confuses the matter.
You need to actually tell us how the TC is setup in the network. What kind of broadband modem you have and what kind of vpn you are using.
