Time capsule firewall, do I need the mcafee firewall on my xp pc? ....

Since the time capsule I'm using as a router servicing my pc running xp and my macbook includes a hardware firewall, do I need to use the software firewall that comes with my mcafee virus package on the pc???
It's my understanding that running a pc without a firewall for even a few minutes is super dangerous.
Thanks in advance,
Jason

The reason I ask, is that I'm trying to get my hp 6840 wireless printer to work wirelessly. So far, no go. The pc install software takes me through the wireless install steps then runs into the mcafee firewall.
So I disabled it, since hp says the xp firewall will not interfere. Still won't work. So I disabled the xp firewall. Still no go. The install software on the mac doesn't even ask me about the wireless setup, so there's no love there.
Any ideas??
Thanks again,
Jason

As a Verizon FIOS client, can we just use Ethernet cable to connect to time capsule or do we need the Verizon router to connect to time capsule?

The Time Capsule is indeed a wireless router with simultaneous dual band capability...and a hard drive for backup purposes. You can use that to your advantage if you configure the Time Capsule as I suggested in Bridge Mode.
The Time Capsule will provide a 802.11n 5 GHz band and a 802.11n/g/b compatible 2.4 GHz band to allow virtually any device to connect to the network.
I suppose that you could also use the "g" wireless network provided by the Verizon router as a "guest" network or something similar if you really do need another wireless network.
It might be possible to configure the Time Capsule as the main router on the network....that's a question for Verizon. But even if you might be able to do this, I'm sure it is not supported by Verizon, so you would be on your own in the event of any Internet connection difficulties on your service.
And, since the Time Capsule does not have a built in modem....you would still need to add a separate modem to the installation anyway.
That's why my suggestion is to use the Verizon device as the "modem" and let the Time Capsule provide the dual band wireless network and of course, handle the Time Machine backups.

  • I have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule. Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh? Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?

    Hi,
I  have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule.
    a) Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh?
    b) Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?

You may not need to buy a new Time Capsule.
You can connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, and use it in addition to the TC's internal HD.  You may need a powered USB hub as well.
Exactly what is on your TC?  If it's only Time Machine backups, you may not need to do anything -- Time Machine will delete the oldest backup(s) automatically when it needs room for new ones.  But if you have more than about 250 GB on your internal HD, that 500 GB may not be large enough to keep backups long enough.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, besides your backups, you could back up to the external HD and use the internal for the other data, or vice-versa.  But TM backups cannot "span" two drives, and you shouldn't mix backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.

    Thanks, W

I'm not sure if you understand that 5 GHz has some upsides, but also some very significant downsides.
The upside is that the 5 GHz signal will allow faster speeds.
The downside is that you must always give up something in order to gain something else.Unfortunately, the marketing hype about 5 GHz does not go into very many details about this.
In the case of 5 GHz, the 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they do not travel as far or penetrate any obstructions like walls or ceilings nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals. In many cases, in order to get good 5 Ghz performance, you literally have to have almost a line-of-sight relationship between your computer and the wireless router.
If you have a new dual band router, which broadcasts both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simutaneously, your Mac will connect to the best signal quality automatically depending on its location in relation to the router. In the same room, without any obstructions, it will connec to 5 GHz. But, take the laptop down the hall a few rooms and around the corner and the Mac will connect to the 2.4 GHz signal because at that location, the 2.4 GHz signal is not only stronger, it is also faster.

  • How to disconnect internet connection in Time Capsule and reconnect without restarting the whole device?

Hi, I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to disconnect internet connection in Time Capsule and reconnect without restarting the whole device?
The thing is that as I have a dynamic IP address, everytime I restart the internet connection my IP address changes. I sometimes need it to change, so I need to restart the connection. I don't know another way to restart the connection than restarting the whole Time Capsule.
    Thanks!!
PD: the computer I use is Windows based, using the Airport Utility for Windows, but I also have a MacBook Pro I could use and an iPhone too.

The utility in windows is very like Mac so the screenshots are from Mac as I don't have windows available now.
How this works depends on the setup of the TC.. which you did not tell us.. you cannot change anything if you do not have the TC as the main router in the network.
So on the internet tab you need to share a public IP address.
On the next tab where you set IP address.
    Click the renew IP address.
It might work.. and it might not.. the problem is you are not disconnecting the network.. sometimes the hard disconnection is required before the address will renew..
What about unplugging the WAN port.. then click renew the IP which will fail.. then plug the wan back in again.
In the end it is easier and faster to power cycle the TC.

    Hi shldr2thewheel,
it has been a while since we have last spoke, I would like to let you know, I am still working on getting used to the switch from windows to a Mac/Apple system. I do have a new question for you, I did purchase In Design CS5.5 through journeyed.com through Cuyahoga Community College of which I attend as a student, is there a way to purchase an online book through iTunes to learn that as well? Also, you know me, the struggling student, I would also, when and if the book can be purchased through the iTunes, would need to know if you do know of a much easier book for struggling students like myself and at a reasonable price as well for the In Design CS5.5 program. Our campus bookstore had closed early, and, so did the colleges library and our local library here where I do live, so, I cannot go to either place to purchase a book or to take out a book, plus cash funds are low at this moment as well but, I do have money left on the iTunes account to use, if it can be used. So, can it be used, the iTunes money, towards finding a low priced online book? I am in great need of assistance as I have a project due for my one course for this Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Sincerely in need of help once again,
    Kim

  • Can time capsule be used to store the iPhoto library?

    Hi.
Can somebody please advise if the time capsule can be used to store iPhoto library files (90GB) and iMovie files (600GB).
    Kind Regards
    Tony

Don't know about iMovie, but if you check with the experts in the iPhoto support area, they will strongly advise against locating the iPhoto library on the Time Capsule....especially if you are using wireless.
Might be a good idea to post over there for first hand info, but even if you decide to do this....risking corruption to your image library....have you thought about how you will back up the iPhoto library once it is on the Time Capsule?
You will need another hard drive for this, of course...and an application that can backup a network drive....since Time Machine cannot do this.
A better idea might be to connect a hard drive directly to your Mac using USB or FireWire and store the iPhoto library there....as the iPhoto experts will also recommend.
Then....Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive.....so  you have backups of everything.

  • HT3728 When I reconnect my Time Capsule after a factory reset, the Airport Utility shows ther message"Unexpected error. Try again." I also get this if I redo the factory reset.

The Time Capsule is not providing a wireless connection.
When I reconnect my Time Capsule after a factory reset, the Airport Utility shows ther message"Unexpected error. Try again." I also get this if  I cancel the Airport Utility app and restart it. I performed the factory reset again, restarted the Airport Utility and received the same error. What are the steps to debug and fix the wireless problem?
My Time Capsule is connected to my FIOS router and to my Mac Mini. I am still able to connect to the Internet from the Mini via ethernet. It seems that the Time Capsule acts as a bridge for the ethernet connections between Internet to FIOS, FIOS to Time Capsule, and Time Capsule to Mac Mini.

Which model TC is this? The A1xxx number from the base please.
Try the setup in full isolation from the network.. so unplug the TC from the network.. and turn off wireless in the mini.. so you have mini--ethernet--lan port TC.. and nothing else.
    Do the factory reset.
Now check if TC comes up in airport utility..
If it fails, turn on ipv6 local link.. if you are using 6.3 utility this could be necessary.
Still fails, try loading the v5 utility.. you will need to plug the computer back into the FIOS to get internet. Then depending on OS.. Lion according to your profile.. you can just down the utility.. ML takes more steps.
    See below.
Do you have an iphone or ipad.. download the airport utility app and use those for the setup.. that can sometimes work better.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.

  • New Time Capsule: Ideal Configuration Advice needed for dual band

I am updating/changing my wireless network to incorporate a 2TB Time Capsule instead of an Airport Extreme (not dual band but 80211.n). I have 2 old Airport Expresses (80211.g) that I will replace with newer 80211.n versions for AirTunes and wireless printing. My Airport Extreme still works and can also be used to extend the network.
I want to set up the new version of the network to use the dual band wisely given the items in my household that will be using it. I’m afraid I don’t quite understand what the ideal setup would be and hesitate to dismantle my currently working system before I’ve mapped out what I ought to do for the new one.
The wireless items that need to use the network:
    MacBook Pro (circa 2007, Intel)
(needs to be backed up on Time Capsule daily, holds the large iTunes Library & large iPhoto library)
    iBook (circa 2004)
    iPhone 3GS
    Wii
    LG blu ray player
(n compatible... not currently in my network but will be added once the new network is up and running... hoping to use it to wirelessly download HD movies at 720p at least)
AirTunes (2 systems, using Airport Express units)
Canon printers (2... not wireless themselves but using Airport Expresses... I have 2 old Expresses or I can use the Extreme or the TC or piggy back on one of the Expresses that is supplying AirTunes)
TiVo series 2 DVR wireless connection (I do not know if this is n or g compatible. It’s several years old so I suspect g.)
Can someone point me to documentation that will help me understand my choices and possibilities, not just the technical how-to? Is there an ideal setup that's obvious to those of you with experience?

Hello KristenLC. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
There are a number of things to take into consideration when "designing" a network. One of them is the bandwidth requirements of the network clients. Staying with this topic and based on your hardware: the MacBook Pro (Time Machine backups), LG player (Video streaming), & TiVo (Video streaming) will all require the most bandwidth. Streaming audio to the AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) would most likely be the next in line for bandwidth. The iPhone, Wii, and iBook would probably require the least.
As such, you want to place your networking clients on the appropriate network infrastructure that would provide them with the best bandwidth possible for their needs. Ethernet will provide the best bandwidth, followed by 5 GHz 802.11n, 2.4 GHz 802.11n, and then, 2.4 GHz 802.11g.
So with not knowing where the desired location of your hardware, I can only recommend the following:
    1) Connect the MBP, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to the Time Capsule (TC).
    2) Connect the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), by Ethernet, to the TC.
    3) Connect the LG, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to either the TC or AEBSn.
    4) Similarly, connect the TiVo, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to either the TC or AEBSn.
    5) Join both AXn to either the TC or AEBSn by 5 GHz 802.11n.
    6) Connect the iBook, either by Ethernet or 2.4 GHz 802.11g to the TC.
    7) Connect the iPhone by 2.4 GHz 802.11g to the TC.
    8) Connect the Wii, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to either the TC or AEBSn.
Can someone point me to documentation that will help me understand my choices and possibilities, not just the technical how-to?
One excellent source would be from the Take Control series of guides. In particular, I would recommend that you check out: "Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network" by Glenn Fleishman.

  • HT1449 I moved my itunes library to the time capsule. Everytime I put the computer to sleep, I have to change the location back to the time capsule. I cannot get the iTunes library to stay located in the time capsule.

My itunes library does not stay in its new location in the time capsule. Every time I put the computer to sleep or leave it alone for awhile, the itunes location goes back to the original location in the macbook. Then I have to change the location back to the time capsule and wait for it to reorganize all the files again. So the question is how to keep my itunes in its new location the time capsule?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
+Can someone please provide a definite answer, or at least warn against using the TC as a shared media device on a network. The whole point of getting such a device is to be able to offload large multimedia libraries from the laptops, yet access a shared library when networked. N'est ce pas?+
We're all users here...not pros...so you'll get few definitive answers on a forum with varying opinions about almost every subject.
My opinion would be this: Apple designed the Time Capsule for Time Machine to automatically backup all the files on your Mac and other Macs in the household on a regular basis and provide a way to retrieve a file that had been deleted recently by mistake. It's a pretty good router as well.
If you check the info about the Time Capsule on Apple's site, the main features mentioned are backup of your Macs and a dual band wireless network capability.
The Time Capsule was never designed to be a media server housing audio, video and other multi-media files and has never been promoted as such. Nevertheless, some users seem to have adopted the stance that this should be one of the benefits of the device, if not a main feature.
There may be a need for media server type device, but the Time Capsule, at least at this time, is not the answer. If you feel otherwise, you might want to speak directly to Apple and let them know via Time Capsule Feedback.

You need to be running at least the Lion (10.7.5) operating system or higher on your Mac, or using an iPhone or iPad with AirPort Utility installed on the device to set up the Time Capsule.
Check the System Requirements for the Time Capsule to confirm.
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3 or higher

    As described above.
I do not own neither a Mac nor an iOS devices. May I still be able to use all features of Time Capsule, including remote access over the internet?

You will have setup issues.. as the latest AC model requires a Mac or iOS device.. eventually apple will release a windows version of the utility.. and the current one does partly work but Apple seem in no hurry.
You can find a Mac or iPad equipped friend to do the setup.. once setup the Windows computer can use it.
BUTT you cannot access it from remote..
Not with windows. You need BTMM and iCloud account. AFAIK even with those you cannot reach the TC.
You can do it manually.. using a vpn. Buy a proper vpn router and use a vpn client on the windows computer.. the TC would be in bridge to the network..
Apple really did not make this for windows.. and SMB access is only provided on LAN access not WAN.

  • Why won't time capsule and Airport connect to the NBN satellite modem, when a Linksys router does flawlessly?

I've tried using both Airport Express and Time Capsule to connect wirelessly to the NBN "SkyEdgeII modem. In both cases the connection is unreliable, in particular many https pages do not open because safari cannot connect to the server. The crazy thing is that I can connect wirelessly using two different, current model Linksys routers, no problem at all.  I have spent many hours with the ISP tech support at Skymesh, making sure that the settings are right, but we continue to have a very flaky performance from both the Airport devices.

Use System Preferences: Network: Show Network Port Configurations, there should be a setting where you can enable and disable individual Network Ports. Make sure that all the ports are disabled, except for Airport, the MacBook might be trying to connect to Ethernet via another port and not using Airport, even though it appears to be connected to linksys.
OS X 10.5 Leopard is organized a little different from OS X 10.4 Tiger, but you should be able to find the place in that System Preferences screen where you can display and change the Network Port Configurations.
You might possibly need to check the wireless router configuration to see how many IP addresses it can assign or if there are some other connection restrictions enabled on the router, for more info see the User Guide
