Time Capsule fix needed (2nd Generation)

I have a 2nd generation Time Capsule that suddenly died.  I thought it was on the way out as lately I was getting warnings that it wanted to essentially start my backups from scratch!!
I took the hard drive out and tested it in my Drobo and the drive still works.  I believe its the power supply and need to know:
A): Where to but one.
B):  If the same power supply that was in there is good enough for a 2-3 TB drive instead of the 1 TB.
Thanks for any help,

Old name condensers although they still use that name in French and other languages.. we call them capacitors now.
They are dead.. the rust on the end is leaking electrolyte.
You need to replace with high capacity low esr types.. it is most important if you want to repair to buy the right ones.
And you need 4 caps not just two.. I pointed the post out in the other thread.

  • What is the proper way to extend 2nd generation time capsule network to 2nd generation Airport Express?

I have a Simultaneous Dual Band Time Capsule. Up until now, I have been extending the network with the Airport Express (2nd Gen, the 802.11n model). Since it was not simultaneous dual band, it was extending over the 2.4 GHz band so as it could extend b, g, and n and support my iPhone at 2.4 n as well as my iPad and MacBook Pro at 5 GHz.
I just bought the new simultaneous dual band unit, which theoreticalkly should be able to extend both bands.
Now, it is not that simple. I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on. I also still have the old Express which I have relegated to another part of the house.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule. Which one do I join? How do I know that both are extended? When I connect to the <SSID 5GHz> now my iPhone can see that one and connect to it, so I am assuming it is NOT going at 5 GHz.
And I have no idea at all what the guest network is doing....
Does anyone have any insight into tthe proper way to configure all the units, and what I can expect? My network is as follows:
                                                                                             Airport Express (Simultaneous Dual Band)
Cable Modem > Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual Band) >
                                                                                             Airport Express (802.11n, last gen)
I want to run guest network (hopefully simultaneous dual band) and personal network. I want the new express to run both bands just like the Time Capsule, and for the old express I want to know which of the two bands I am extending.
    Thank You!

I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on
Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be extended.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule.
This likely indicates that the Time Capsule has been setup to use separate names for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, instead of the default, which uses the same wireless network name for both bands.
In order for the AirPort Express to be able to extend both bands, the Time Capsule will need to be configured so that both bands use the same wireless network name.
Then, configure the AirPort Express to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule, and it will extend both bands.  At least, that is the way an AirPort Extreme works, and I assume that the Express is the same. I don't have an Express here to test, but will in another day or two.
The location of the Express is important, since the 5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. You may need to experiment by placing the Express closer to the Time Capsule than normal.  With an AirPort Extreme, I find that the Extreme must be located no more than about half the distance from the main router to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you continue to use the previous model Express to extend as well, it too must be configured to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule. Configured this way, the Express will extend the stronger of the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz signals, so it will likely extend the 2.4 GHz band unless it is located close to the Time Capsule.
To find out which band the previous model Express is extending, locate a Mac laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen. The info displayed will indicate whether you (and the Express) are connecting using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

  • I have working Netgear network. Want to add new Time Capsule and run 2nd network for new apple TV and Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC and Canon printer.

I have working Netgear N600 dual band router network. The existing network has an XP netbook PC, canon printer, 2 Iphones, Epson Air printer, an Ipad, 3 roku boxes, backup drive. Just bought a new Apple TV box, and time capsule 2T.  I have an IMac on order but don't have it here yet.
My goal is to add new Time Capsule and create 2nd "apple" network for new apple TV, Iphones, Ipad, Epson Air printer and new Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC, Roku TV boxes, and Canon printer and backup drive.
The Netgear router, the time capsule and new IMac will be on the same desktop, I dont need to backup my netbook PC to time capsule.
    Where do I start?
Which device connects to my modem first, the TC2 or the Netgear?
Is it best wait for the Imac before starting or can the TC2 be set up from my Ipad or PC?
    Thanks.

    It is pretty simple..
Setup the TC in bridge and plug it into the Netgear.. I would leave the netgear as the main router for now, although in the future you can swap things around. The netgear firmware may have issues with bonjour and airplay/airprint?? Does your ipad print ok now?
You can setup the TC using Mac, PC (at least up to win7) or iOS.. they all have airport utility available.
Bridge mode is set differently depending on the version of the utility. This is v5 and how the windows one will look (at least similar to).
    v6 will be as
With the TC in bridge you will still create a wireless network.. and give it a different name from the netgear.. then all the apple devices can connect to it. Use ethernet rather than wireless if the imac is on the desktop with it. Much faster and better for using Time Machine backups.
If you run into any issues.. just post the particular issue. It will take a bit of getting used to, but isn't hard.

  • Can I Use My Time Capsule as a 2nd Wireless Router? Pls Help

Thanks for trying to help. I have a Time Capsule that I'm currently using to back up my files. My next door neighbor is willing to share his internet with me for half the monthly cost. He already has a wireless router and I can connect to it (no probs) except the signal strength is not so powerful since I'm a couple feet far from his router. I was wondering if I can use my Time Capsule to hook up the internet via WIFI through his wireless router (that way I have a stronger signal strength from my Time Capsule). Basically using my Time capsule as a 2nd wireless router.
Neighbour's wireless Router = Time Capsule = My Macbook
If I can please tell me how to set this up in details please. thanks for your time.

You are trying to set up the Time Capsule as a Wireless Router
and Repeater? - To share an existing wireless network, wireless?
The AirPort Extreme was capable of repeating (like a transceiver)
to and from an existing wireless network, to expand upon it; but
only did this with another AirPort product, such as an Express.
The Time Capsule and many of its features are outlined here, with more
information: AirPort + Time Capsule: http://www.apple.com/support/airport/
You may have to direct your question regarding expanding an existing
wireless network, to the Discussions section for the specific products.
Usually, the "extend a network" wireless feature in the software setup
    only applies to the use of a second Apple AirPort-type base station;
such as the Extreme, Express, etc. The compatibility is between the
AirPort-like Apple products; but a bridge could be made if an Express
were attached to the other wireless network via Ethernet cable, then
the Time Capsule may be able to see it. This would require testing.

  • I recently upgraded my OS to Lion 10.7.4.  I also just upgraded from a 1st Generation Time Capsule to a 4th Generation Time Capsule.  I have an Airport Express (Version A1264) that I formerly used to extend my wireless network.  AE no longer works.

TC first gen was not simultaneous dual band. So.. it's probably best to factory reset your extreme and then tell it to extend again.

Not sure what you mean by "stretched", but the Time Capsule can certainly be wall mounted. Apple sells the wall mounting brackets:

  • Is time capsule still needed if u have iCloud

Is time capsule still needed in u have iCloud

The Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme with a hard disk inside.. so it is a full router.
But I cannot answer the question.. if your netgear router is also a modem.. then the TC is not a modem and you would still need the netgear or something similar.

  • HT1551 How do I fix a 2nd generation Apple TV that does not restore to factory settings after a failed installation of software update 6.0?

Yesterday, I got asked by my 2nd generation Apple TV if I wanted to update download and install the new software update. I clicked "Yes" and the download and installation process began. Nothing out of the ordinary happened and when the installation completed the Apple TV automatically rebooted itself, which is what has happened with previous software updates.
Alas, after reboot, the only thing that appeared on screen was an old iTunes logo (the one with the CD in the background) and what looked like a USB cable. I went online and found out that other people had been experiencing similar problems with the newly released Apple TV 6.0 update and that they had also ended up with the same image on their screen.
As it turns out, this image apparently means that you need to restore your Apple TV to factory settings by hooking it up to your computer using a micro-USB cable and then using iTunes to restore it in a way analogous to restoring an iPhone via iTunes.
I followed all of the instructions to the letter such as disconnecting my Apple TV from all cables including the power cord and then hooking it up to my computer with the micro-USB cable. I opened iTunes and absolutely nothing happened. The Apple TV does not appear as a device so I am not able to restore it.
I have attempted rebooting my computer and leaving my Apple TV disconnected for a while before hooking it up to my computer since it apparently has an internal baterry that keeps a charge for about 30 seconds after being disconnected. Nothing has worked.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    System configuration:
Apple TV 2nd generation running update 5.3
    iTunes version 11.1 (126)
Mac OS X 10.8.5 on an Intel Core 2 Duo

Did you follow the instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4367
Pay attention to differences in power connection depending on whether or not you have AppleTV2 or AppleTV 3.
Also some microUSB leads don't seem to work - try another if you can. Disconnect superfluous USB device/hubs too if possible.

  • Continual "indexing backup" with 500GB Time Capsule - fix?

I'm posting this for my father, who's having the issue; I have remote access to the system and can get any further information for you.
In short, he's having one of the infinite-wait "indexing backup" issues (ten days now). Spotlight errors show in the system log:
    Jan 21 18:54:04 btmbp mds[29]: (/Volumes/Backup of Brian Tregaskis’s MacBook Pro/.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/651D26C7-A00F-48DE-8372-DEF8051CF7E1)(Error ) IndexSDB in si_writeBackDBO:Error 27 storing dbo(2dffe6,430,61,47db13a136344,0,a8d19,30)
This is despite Spotlight being disabled for the backup drive through Privacy.
I have followed the following instructions from the FAQ:
    1. disabling and re-enabling Time Machine
    2. repairing the sparse image (led to a 90% successful backup; Spotlight errors then hit, the backup cancelled itself and we're back to indexing backup again)
    3. changing all the system names
None of this appears to have made much of a difference, except the almost-successful sparse image repair (although that took twelve hours.)
Does anyone out there have any further ways of fixing this which go beyond the FAQ? The machine hasn't backed up for a good ten days now.
Thanks a lot for any help. Here is a log from the Dashboard extension:

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Spotlight isn't the only user of the mds process. Time Machine is another, so that's probably where this message came from.
Disk image /Volumes/Time Capsule Disk/Brian Tregaskis’s MacBook Pro_001ec2037a21.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Backup of Brian Tregaskis’s MacBook Pro
You didn't get all the names. The Computer name, +Brian Tregaskis’s MacBook Pro+ has an apostrophe and embedded spaces (yes, that's what OSX puts there, and none of it makes any sense, but sometimes TM gets cranky about them). Be sure you get the Computer Name, Local Hostname, Network Name, and Time Capsule name. See #C9 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
Also try the things in #D2 there.

  • Time Capsule vs. 2nd internal hard drive

I have the equipment below but with only one internal hard drive. Recently my system crashed trying to upgrade TechTool (now in the landfill). Pictures and music gone. Backup! What's that? Actually they warned me but have used it for years without problems.
Now to get to my question. I have Time Capsule software (Leopard) but it sounds cheaper and easier just to slip in a 2nd hard drive and use that for backup. Is that crazy or do able? The drive I have in there is a Maxtor 6Y250M0 I think it's a 250GB. I have 164GB available but still don't have half my music and pictures on it. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I also have a Linksys router but my wife uses it for work and I'd be DOA if I screwed that up.
    Thanks all, Crowhead

I can't recover, as far as I know, after wiping the drive and reinstalling the
    system software.
Actually, with the right software, you can. There are plenty of data recovery programs out there: Data Rescue II, Norton Utilities, and Toast Titanium, just to name a few.
Even after wiping a drive, you may still be able to recover a lot of data using a good data recovery program.
A question I do have is, I'm seeing SATA I/II. Does that just mean single and dual processors?
No. SATA is what connects your internal drives. You can think of it like a modern version of SCSI, in a way.

  • I have a current 2TB Time Capsule. I would like to add more ethernet ports for needed expansion. Will an Airport Extreme conflict with the Time Capsule for needed ethernet ports and will wireless from both units conflict?

I own a current 2TB Time Capsule and I need to expand my network system to include more ethernet (wired) ports. I am considering an Airport Extreme that would give me enough wired ports. Will the wireless capabilities of both units conflict with each other? I only need one wireless network. Thank you for any help.

While you could certainly add an AirPort Extreme to provide additional Ethernet ports, you could also save about $150 by purchasing an inexpensive switch, such as one of these:
    http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DGS-1005G-5-Port-Gigabit-Desktop/dp/B003X7TRWE/
    http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Unmanaged-GREENnet-Auto-Negotiation-Auto-MDIX/dp/ B001QUA6R0/
Consumer grade Ethernet switches typically come in five and eight port configurations. Just be aware that a five port switch only conveys the ability to add three additional devices. An eight port switch conveys the ability to add six additional devices.
An 8 port switch provides twice the capacity of a 5 port switch for considerably less than twice the cost. The price difference between the two is often only $10 or so.
I just checked, the 8 port version of the Trendnet switch above costs exactly $4 more.
An AirPort Extreme is a very flexible full featured wireless router, and would provide three additional LAN ports for wired devices. If all you need is a few more ports though, it's overkill.

  • ITunes Media on Time Capsule Deleted, Need to Restore

I need help. I store my iTunes Media library on my Time Capsule, and connect to it on my MacBook Air. I was trying to consolidate my files, and I moved about half of my media files to the trash on my Air. Now half of my iTunes library is gone and I'm getting an error when opening iTunes. I now know the mistake I made, and I need to recover the deleted files. However, none of the deleted files are in my Trash for me to "put back." I want to puke. Any help or advice you could offer would really, really be appreciated.

Google finds many articles on how to move your iTunes to an external hard drive.
Here's the first hit in the list:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/
Fairly long article but it does seem to cover nearly everything.

  • Is Time Capsule really needed?

For those of us that have the AEBS (Gig-E).
If using a free piece of software (iTimeMachine) with the current AEBS is pretty much the same thing as wireless backups, what advantage does the Time Capsule really provide? It seems that this would be a waste of money.
AEBS + (iTimeMachine software) + external drive = Time Capsule and a savings of x amount of dollars.

I think your question is still answered by this disclaimer on the iTimeMachine web site which says "DISCLAIMER: Use at your own risk. There are still some bugs when using Time Machine over the network."
Apple disabled support in TimeMachine for AEBSn-attached hard drives for a very good reason, which was that the combination was unreliable. Many older discussions in this forum provide first hand reports of those problems. iTimeMachine merely undoes the limitation that Apple put into TimeMachine, without fixing the underlying problems in the first place. So as the iTimeMachine web site indicates: "use at your own risk". But, I'm happy to hear it seems to work for you.

  • Airport utility message; time capsule disk needs repair

It is a one month old Time Capsule and was working fine. The light is  blinking yellow. I tried a restart on the time capsule. The airport internet is working fine. I opened disk utility but I do not see the time capsule disk there. Any help would be greatly appreciated?

You cannot fix a network disk from disk utility.. it only works on local disk.
I would return it now. Today.. while it is still called Today.
A disk that goes faulty that fast is doomed to early failure the next time.
There is only one function in the TC.. erase the disk.. do a one pass erase if it works.. note this may be greyed out if the disk if not even reachable.
You can also turn off the TC for a couple of hours to cool down.. is it hot btw?? It should run no more than just warm now.
Otherwise exercise warranty immediately.. to be a pain.. ask why they used Seagate drives after the iMac replacement program.
