Time Capsule folders?

Hi all!
So I had previously used a Western Digital portable HD as my Time Machine backup and it would always mount in my finder as folders that I could access. I would always use this was to get older files rather than use the "Time Machine" app. Just never needed to view in that way. For me its just more straight forward accessing finder folders. I've upgraded to a Time Capsule unit and those finder backup folders never show up. Just a data folder with a bundle in it. It forces me to use "Time Machine". Am I missing a setting or a preference somewhere that will just allow me to view the backups as finder folders like when I used my WD HD?
Thanks!
George

TM backs up to network drives inside a container which is the sparsebundle.
You can though still mount the actual backup in finder.

  • Time Capsule & Shared folders

Before I purchased my time capsule I had a linksys wireless router and I could see the shared folders of my Dell PC on my MacBook. Since I have set up the Time Capsule I can't see them any longer although I can see the time Capsule from the Dell and have backed up to it as well as backing up from the MacBook. Where am I going wrong?

I found out that Time Capsule manages these rights. This is how I fixed my problem:
Enabled 'AirPort disk Guest Access' in the AirPort Utility, set it to 'read' and connected to the Time Capsule as 'Guest'. Now all users can approach the Time Capsule folders through FTP.
P.S. This is on Snow Leopard Server

  • WOW "Time Capsule does not support iTunes Library"

I just got off the phone with 2 people at apple care (a technician and product specialist) and i explained to them my problem with time capsule and itunes and they both stated "we dont support the itunes folder being on time capsule and this isnt something we can offer support for." i have a feeling this should have been mentioned in the specs seeing that most people are using it for exactly that.
anyone else have this problem with apple care people completely brushing you off on problems with itunes/time capsule?

sorry i had posted another topic with one of the problems i was having and hadnt received any help which led me to call apple support. im not the only one that has discovered this and if you call apple they will tell you flat out as they did myself and others on this board that time capsule doesnt support having an itunes folder on it. you can do it, but they told me "time machine cannot manage the itunes folder properly over any sort of air disk". while yes you can move your library and yes it will play the music their are alot of bugs that they cant offer support for. apparently most of the problems stem from the permissions and scripts itunes uses to manage and update the files in your library. for example if you import a song you already have into itunes once its on your time machine and hit the "replace existing" option it will replace it in itunes but it will double up on the songs in the time capsule folders. another problem is in deleting and/or moving itunes files/folders on time capsule. while sometimes it allows it, most of the time the files "cannot be completed due to being in use". which you then have to close itunes, eject time capsule, re mount, and try again. im a huge fan of apple and have been for many many years and this is the first time ive ever been disappointed in an apple product. its a great product its just not meant for what myself and many others on this board were intending on using it for. and its a little unfair that they dont express this conflict in the description. but hey if you dont believe me then call apple and ask them yourself. i did. just wanted to notify others is all.
*sorry for the double post. it wasnt showing up at first

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

  • Can't change permission on Time Capsule files and folders

I am using my Time Capsule as a storage device that everyone on my network can access, and I also have a fairly small (~5000 songs) iTunes Library as well. This was all working fine, until I decided to try to get a second computer, beside my MacBook Pro (8,1) to connect to the iTunes Library. Suddenly strange things started happening, like the network dropping at seemingly completely random times, certain people being kicked of the network, etc. So then I thought "well maybe its because of the iTunes Library." So I did a 'Get Info' to the Library folder, named iTunes Library, and it showed this:
This didn't seem too strange, except for the (unknown) name. I then learned (http://pondini.org/TM/E10.html) that this may actually be causing the problem, so I hit the minus button while hovering over it, only to see this:
Now, as far as I can tell, this shouldn't be happening. So I tried it on many different computers (10.8.4, 10.6.8, 10.7.5, among others), and they all said this. Then, back on 10.8.4, I decided to try to add my name, even though it said that everyone can read and write, and it said this:
Now I knew this was strange, since it has never, ever happened to me since OS 7. What was also strange, instead of showing the usual selection window, it asked me to type in my username, like so:
This happened on every computer, and in every directory and every file (or at least the couple dozen I tried, including ones outside the Library folder that I had already changed permissions on before normally), so I knew something was definetly up. So of course, I turned to my friend, the Terminal. I tried doing sudo chmod 555, 755, 775, 777, and a+x, and none of them worked, again, on multiple different files and folders. Also, since I have connected the second conmputer to the Library, it seems as though the file iTunes Library.itl is no longer executable, because it looks like this:
Also, no one but me can connect to it anymore, even though they can all see it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Sorry for the low-res images, Apple seems to have done something to them

Verify volume failed with error Could not unmount disk (-10000)
That could happen if there is another process that is presently accessing the volume.  I don't think it related to the volume having data corruption.  The fact that is it a "server" may be relevant.
In the time that you have had this problem, has it been shut down and restarted?
You can also try restarting it with the Shift key held down.  That should do a Safe Mode startup, if an Xserve acts like a regular Mac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
The Safe Boot will do some maintenance and tests during startup, and start up with only essential proceses running.  Try accessing that folder now.  If you can access it, you should probably save it off on another volume, such as an external drive, so that you have a current backup.
Try running Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk again in Disk Utility.  Repair Disk Permissions will probably give you a lot of messages; they are usually just "informational" so don't be concerned.  However, if Verify Disk reports an error, that is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.
Edit:  If the volume being tested is NOT the startup disk, then Repair Disk Permissions will be disabled.  It only applies when there is a system installed on that volume.

  • Can I copy my iTunes files and folders to Time Capsule wirelessly from my PC?

Can I copy my iTunes files and folders to Time Capsule wirelessly from my PC? I was wondering since my iTunes files and folders are connected to iTunes.

You can but the TC is the worst possible location. The design is slow to start and quick to stop data connections.. that will cause trouble.
    Moving folders has specific instructions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364
Move it to an external hard disk fine.. but be very sure you will not be happy with the TC as a location.

  • Time capsule not creating folders

I setup time capsule with a external hard drive connected directly to my iMac and it created a backup folder with dated backup sub-folders.  When I moved the drive to my AirPort Extreme router, I was able to get Time Capsule working but it now does not back up to the folders.  I also setup Time Capsule to back up my MacBook and it does the same thing.  No folders, only a "sparse bundle" file.  How do I get it working like it did when it was connected directly?

You cannot.. Time Machine works differently on local and network drives.. see Pondini for the difference in operation.

  • Time Capsule Ignoring my 'Excluded' Folders

    Hi,
This is my first time backing up with Time Capsule / Time Machine. I excluded quite a lot of stuff that I have backed up elsewhere -- I have a 140 gb drive and the TM settings say "Total Included: 75 gb." However, when I start my backup, the progress bar always says "XX out of 131 gb."
It could be that the progress indicator is wrong, and it will quit once it reaches the needed 75 gb. But it's going REALLY slow - like 8 gb in an hour - and I don't want to wait that long. If it's going this slow, I've read I may want to re-format the drive. But it's my friend's TC and I don't want to mess with her files already on the drive so I'm not going to do that.
Is there any way to just get it to pay attention to my settings?
    Thanks,
    Josh

I'm having exactly the same problem. I have a brand-new 1TB Time Capsule, and the first time I tried to back up to it I excluded some folders and ran Time Machine. The Time Machine menu was initially correct, saying
"Backing Up: x of of 40GB"
Unfortunately, it didn't stop at 40GB, and the menu eventually said
    "Backing Up: 50.53GB of 50.53GB"
    "Backup Up: 80.02GB of 80.02GB"
etcetera, until it had backed up my entire computer. I went into Time Machine ("Enter Time Machine") and confirmed that it had indeed made backups of the folders and files that I had excluded.
After that, it made incremental backups (I assume it was still ignoring the exclusions). However, when I changed the excluded files, it thinks it has to back up virtually the whole computer again, the Time Machine status now reads
"Backing Up: 15.53 GB of 89.16GB"
This, again, looks like the correct calculated amount, but it will probably continue to back up past that all the way to 105 GB (my whole hard drive) again. I'll know tomorrow.
I know this problem is related to this Time Capsule, as previously I was using Time Machine with an external hard drive with no problem.
I searched for solutions to this problem and found Pondini's suggestion of deleting the Time Capusule .plist file. I did this, and deleted my whole sparsebundle file as well for good measure, but it didn't fix the problem.
I can't let Time Machine back up my whole computer because I have a VMware Windows virtual machine and Time Machine would try to back up the whole ~15 GB file every hour every time I go into Windows.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Empty Folders on Time Capsule

Is there a way for me to find empty folders on my time capsule without looking in each one? I have all my music on there and know some of the folders/albums contain no files/songs. Thanks!

None that I know about.. you just have to open them..
But the issue is Yosemite more than TC in all likelihood.
Files are often hidden as Yosemite has poor poor networking.
Reboot the whole network.. no luck reset the TC back to factory as that has fixed the problem.

  • How do I batch unlock files in nested folders in Time Capsule

I am attempting to back up my computer to my Time Capsule, but Time Machine is unable to complete the backup because of lack of space. Part of the problem is that my wife used the TC a couple of years ago to back up some folders manually (i.e. not using Time Machine) and these take up a lot of room. I am unable to delete them, as there are a number of files deep within the folder structure of her photo library that are locked. To locate and unlock them all one by one would take weeks of work, so I either need to find a way to unlock them as a batch, or I will have to reformat the drive. I'm reluctant to do the latter, as that would mean also deleting the most recent backups that my wife and I have both made of our machines using TM.
I have tried using terminal to do the batch unlock, by moving into the relevant high level folders and using the command
    chflags nouchg *
as advised elsewhere in these forums, but this doesn't seem to have worked. I am guessing that perhaps it doesn't get into all the nested folder structure. Other advice I have found relates to forcing the trash to empty, but as the TC is an external drive I can't even get as far as dragging these folders into the trash.
So I would be grateful if anyone could advise how I might batch unlock the files in the nested folders within TC.
    Thanks in advance

Awesome. Thanks Matthew for finding this utility. I downloaded it used it on 7,000 locked files in all sorts of different folders and it worked within minutes. Saved me a lot of time because Terminal was a pain to use. And it didn't always work.

  • Time Capsule, Aperture Vault, Folders

I'm considering acquiring a Time Capsule to replace my WD NAS, which is clunky, unreliable, and absurdly slow. My Aperture library seems to constantly become corrupted by my using the NAS both for Time Machine backups and as a duplicate stoarge place for my Vault.
I understand a TC will allow me to backup using Time Machine. But will it also allow me to set up seperate folders, one for an Aperture Vault, and another for storing documents or other material outside of my Mac's hard drive? I also backup incrementally using Superduper and a portanle USB HD. Does anyone know if I could do  additional Superduper incremental backups onto a TC? (That's a lot of backing up, I know, but I'm paranoid about losing my stuff)
    OSX 10.9.1
    Aperture 3.5.1

The TC will have exactly the same issues as the WD NAS.. it is designed specifically for Time Machine.
Constant corruption of a library is due to network disconnections which over wireless are to be expected.. wireless is not a reliable media for holding open files.
You can use the TC to mix files and backups..
    See Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
But I don't see you getting any further down the road to reliable use than you have now.

  • Time Capsule not excluding folders

All of a sudden, my Time Capsule doesn't exclude the folders I tell to do so from backup. I have this huge folder I just prefer not to copy to Time Capsule, and even though I have selected it to exclude it, then, in the end, system doesn't listen to me and begins copying everything, including that folder. Why is that? How can I fix this? Thank you all.

Are you sure you followed the instructions completely?
Has it completed the backup?  If so, use one of the apps in #A2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see exactly what's getting backed-up.
If not, or if Time Machine is trying to back up everything, see #D7 there.
Message was edited by: Pondini -- a typo:  it should be #D7, not #B7.

  • Time capsule disks not showing folders.

I only use time capsule as a hard drive source. But after i upgraded to mavericks i cannot access any folders I saved in my time capsule disk cause they just won't appear on finder. I have a picture to help you genius understand a bit clearer. Can anyone please help??? Thanks in advance.

I have NOT upgraded.. and will not until it has done a few updates.. due to exactly the fun and games you are having..
There is a major issue with the change in Mavericks to using SMB as preferred protocol.
    Eject the TC..
Manually mount the TC.. using go, connect to server.
    AFP://TCname or APF://TCIPaddress
    Or use
    CIFS://TCname etc.
Is your TC available via airport utility? Is it on 7.6.4 firmware.. if not update??

  • Possible to access files/folders on Time Capsule?

I'm thinking of buying a Time Capsule. If I backup my Mac with Time Machine, will I then be able to eg. see the pictures from my mac on another Mac in the network? In other words; is it possible to access files and folders instantly from the Time Capsule?

If you mean Time Machine backups, technically you can use it for both, but it presents some problems.
See #Q3 in [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for details and a couple of workarounds.

  • Cannot access folders on my Time Capsule

I have been using my Time capsule for backups via Time Machine, but also as an external disk where I would manually drop some folders.
It has now started behaving crazy.
I can no longer access some of these folders I placed on it. They keep appearing and disappearing.
Difficult to explain, please take a look at the short YouTube video I created:
    https://youtu.be/1Vaupg6pfLs
I've tried restarting it, mounting it via WiFi and via ethernet cable, accessing it from my iPhone, nothing.
Can no longer open up these folders.
Any ideas what I could try?
    Or is my data lost?
    Thank you.

This is pretty standard behaviour from Yosemite. Did you just upgrade or did you install the latest patch of yosemite which triggered it.
You might find permissions are messed up. But fixing them on a network drive is not easy..
The usual way you get around these kind of things.. copy the files to a different location via command line in terminal. You log in as SU and you should be able to do it.. rsync is a very powerful tool and I have tried to help someone else with the commands. It works for me but I am not sure if the poster was successful.
Just google for the rsync commands.. they are fairly simple to do.. you can copy all the directories that are hidden now, once you login as SU.
Or use the built in archive of the airport utility.. to a USB drive.. then you can plug that drive into the computer and fix the permissions..
Sorry I cannot give you a simpler way to fix it.. if you have any apple care left ring apple support and check if they have some simple method.. I have not seen one come up around here yet.
