Time capsule for itunes

Can I use TC with time machine and also store my iTunes library on the TC and access it with all computers?

Do a google.. you can move the library to the TC.. the end result might not thrill you.
TC is slow to start and quick to spin down the drive. It is for backups not files storage.
Itunes is easily corrupted especially over wireless to the TC... you corrupt a bit and you corrupt all.
There is absolutely no backup.. TM cannot backup a network drive... how will you preserve the library against the inevitable failure of the TC or its drive.
Apple do not make a suitable product for this, other than to use a Mac Mini as a HTPC where you store and run your media.. this works really well but is expensive cf a NAS with itunes server.

  • Can I use Time Capsule for iTunes Library?

I have a Macbook Pro, an Apple TV, 2 iPads, 2 iPhones at home. Just bought 2TB Time Capsule today.
My kids purchased a lot of movies/TV shows from iTunes store, and it is building up lots of space in my MacBook. I also like to rip my CDs into Apple Losses Format to enjoy on my iPhone.
My Macbook is running out of space, I wonder if I can point my iTunes Library (Music, Videos) to Time Capsule. In other words, I hope to have access to my Music library whenever my iPhone is connected to my MacBook, and most importantly, the kids will be able to access their movies/TV shows from Apple TV / iPads.
Could someone please advice how to do that? Thanks!

    Thanks!
Bob, if you don't me asking some details - if I will buy an external harddisk to store my itunes library:
1). Does it mean everytime I open iTunes (or before I connect any device), I have to ensure the external harddisk is connected vis USB?
2). Say I have some 50GB of data on my MacBook. If I modify Preference/iTunes Media Folder Location, will all the data be "moved" to the external USB drive automatically?
3). When we talked about "moving iTunes Media folder", does it include everything (i.e. my iPhone, iPad, backup, apps, etc), or it is just Music/Books/TV Shows/Movies?
Shamefully speaking, I might be a stupid dad - I used iPhotos to import all pictures/videos from Digital Camera, iPhones, iPads for a year, until last night I installed Aperture 3. I selected a folder "Pictures" and clicked Import from iPhoto Library, then I was shocked ....my Macbook HDD space shrinks from 40GB free to 1.29GB and still shrinking....as a result I had to move some of my music, videos to trash (to free up another 20 GB of space). Until Aperture finished importing all photos, I had only 2.5GB free
This morning, the first thing I did is to buy a Time Capsule, and try to free up spaces on my Macbook

  • External hard drive connected to Time Capsule for iTunes.

I have copied my iTunes library to an external hard drive and connected the hard drive to my time capsule. I have an iMac and a MacBook and want to see the same iTunes content on each. I want to use the iMac as the main place to add iTunes content and see the results on the MacBook. I have told both iTunes (the iMac and the MacBook) the location of the hard drive, but I see different content on each. For example, if I add new music to the iMac I can't see it on the MacBook.
I sync iPads, iPhones and iPods via the iMac, but don't think this has any bearing on the problem.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this gratefully appreciated, and thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussions, squire78!
If your external drive is connected directly to your computer, you can have Time Machine backup both your computer and the external drive.
If the external drive is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule, Time Machine cannot backup this drive.

  • Use time capsule for iTunes library

I would like to use my new time capsule as the location for my iTunes library. How do I go about doing that? Currently my iTunes library is on my MacBook Pro.

The Time Capsule was designed for your backups, not for everyday or "original" copies of files or folders. It is not a media server.
The smart move would be to get another hard drive and connect it to your Mac. Move the iTunes library to that hard drive.
Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive to the Time Capsule.
iTunes will run just as fast as if it were on your Mac.....and more importantly....you will have backups for both your Mac and the important data on the hard drive on the Time Capsule.
Note that having the "key" will not help a bit if you are trying to connect a wireless device that does not want to see apostrophes, dollar signs, asterisks, and any other special character.
Change the name of your wireless network to something that uses only normal letters and numbers, with no spaces. Do not exceed 20 characters.
    Same rule for password.

No, sorry but it isn't. The TC is designed for Time Machine. It has no way to back itself up, and TM cannot backup network drives. It is slow to respond to requests because the green drive has built in fast spin down and slow spin up. The TC has no media smarts.. it has no smarts at all actually. It is a dumb as a board hard disk in an almost equally dumb router.. you can think of it as dumb and dumber!!
The how to do is discussed all over the place.. Apple have instructions on moving the itunes libary.. just look it up.

That is near to the ideal setup.. a mini makes a great media computer.. and will support iTunes.. just plug in an external drive and then TM can back it up.

  • Time Capsule for iTunes storage?

This is what I would like to do:
Assign all of my movie/TV show files to the Time Capsule to free up my MBP hard drive space.  If I do that, can I still play the movies/TV shows on my Apple TV?  And, can all this be done via wireless too?

The TC is fine.. as a backup for TM.. but it doesn't work great as a file store.. it has no way of backing itself up and TM cannot backup a network drive.
So using a proper NAS is a better idea.. or a Mac Mini as a media server. But that is a lot bigger layout.
A USB or faster if you have FW800 or Thunderbolt drive.. plugged directly into the MBP is much the better solution.. TM can then backup to TC.. and you can play the files to the ATV directly from the drive on the Mac.

  • Can I use my time capsule for a hard drive only?

I have a brand new Time Capsule.
Instead of backing up all of the time, can I just use the Time Capsule for my music and photos?

Music and Photos  would be fine.. but not itunes and iphoto.. the libraries are far more complex and if you load it onto the TC you will have no backups.. the TC is a backup device which has no method of backing itself up.

  • Use Time Capsule for video...

Has anyone used Time Capsule for video streaming?  How to connect to TV if it's pre-digital?

Time Capsule is not a Media Player.. it has zero ability to stream video. It has zero ability to do anything but hold files. It will sit there and hold your video files very happily .. but the dumb as a board hard disk and TC controls can do nothing with it.
You need a media player. And you need one that is able to be hacked or is not Apple. Apple work on itunes, although it is possible to use an Apple TV in the mix if you send video to it from ipad using airplay.
If by pre-digital TV it doesn't have hdmi input, then buy yourself an older media player that has component out.. there is no point buying expensive hdmi to analogue converters. You will eventually replace the TV and will definitely want to go digital. So get an Apple TV 1 that still works from ebay. And use one of the hacking methods. This has component video and you can also get composite out of it. And it will play files stored in the network. Other non-apple players will do the same. Just find one that is older design with component still but ATV1 can still work well. I use one with a crystal acceleration card running crystalbuntu firmware.

  • Configure airport time capsule for roadrunner

I cannot set up airport time capsule for roadrunner.
I need the  DHCP client ID, and brighthouse was no help.

No.. the TC cannot be partitioned.. and it is very poor for file storage.
What films do you mean?? For streaming movies.. you can do it but it is subject to some issues.
    See standard response.
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

  • Using time capsule for time machine and as a HD

I'm debating if buying a time capsule is the right choice for me. Now that my HD on my MBP is almost full, I have to decide quick. At the moment I have my whole itunes library on the MBP HD but I was told the time capsule is a great device which works great with the time machine options.
My question is, Can I use the time capsule for the time machine option and as a HD to keep my itunes library?
    Thanks

Can I use the time capsule for the time machine option and as a HD to keep my itunes library?
In theory, yes. But, you might want to consider that the idea behind having a backup is that you have a copy of everything that is important to you on a separate drive, so that when...not if...the drive fails, you have another copy in a safe place.
If you place the iTunes library on the Time Capsule, +you will have no backups for the library+.
A far better strategy would be to attach a USB drive directly to your computer and use that for the iTunes library and also add the Time Capsule as well. Then Time Machine will backup both the drive on your computer and the attached drive, so you'll have copies of your computer and your iTunes library.

  • Hi. I am using a time capsule for few PC s. I have made 5 different account to access time capsule. but in windows when i enter account name and password for one account, i cannot access other accounts, because windows saves username

Hi. I am using a time capsule for few PC s. I have made 5 different account to access time capsule. but in windows when I enter account name and password for one account, i cannot access other accounts, because windows saves username. how can i prevent this from happenning. I really need to access all my accounts and dont want it to save automaticlly.

Why have 5 accounts if you need to access all of them.. just have one account?
Sorry I cannot follow why you would even use the PC to control the Time Capsule. Apple have not kept the Windows version of the utility up to date.. so they keep making it harder and harder to run windows with apple routers.

  • Can I hook up a windows computer to my airport time capsule for internet access?

We have hooked up our time capsule for the first time today.  It works wonderful on our apple products BUT can I connect a windows based computer to it for internet access?

Yes. Both Ethernet and 802.11 are cross-platform.

  • Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

  • Can I use Time Capsule for Time Machine and a place to put my iPhoto Library

Can I use Time Capsule for Time Machine and a place to put my iPhoto Library?

Only if you partition the Time Capsure into two partitions, one for TM and one for the iPhoto LIbrary.  But you won't be able to backup that library as it will be on the same drive as the TM backups.
It's not recommended.  An alternative solution is to get another EHD, move the library to it and run it from there. Then TM can backup both your boot drive and the working EHD drive.
