Time Capsule, FTP, Synology

Hello,
I have big problem accessing my Synology DS211+ server via internet (FTP&FTPS) via Time Capsule.
I have made default host my Synology DS, enabled NAT, opened ports 20-22, 55536-55663.
None of this is working. I can login from outside, but can't list catalog files.
The connection is broken and starts again.
Please help.
P. G.

It is a solution.. it may not be the solution you wanted. Apple do not use vpn or ftp or lots of other protocols, so they simply don't care whether they work or not. In helping people here with vpn it turns out Apple managed to block vpn in some of their firmware updates.. ie they are not using it so don't test for it. In a closed environment you don't need ftp if you don't use it. You can get external ie wan access to TC, by AFP, since that is an Apple protocol. Hence they test and make sure it works. The problem in the TC without a firewall or a DMZ or QoS or upnp or even logging of some of the wan events like those attempts to get access for ftp it is really hard to figure out what is going wrong. On all the routers I have worked with, I would have simply said at this stage put it in DMZ.. AFAIK, there is no DMZ on any of the apple routers.
Here is a good example of firmware update on an extreme.. causing precisely this issue.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1460980?start=0&tstart=0
Anyway my next suggestion if your direct connection works and you can positively place the problem on the TC, was to suggest setting up an ftp server on the Mac and attempt to use that. Particularly if you can swap from passive to active ftp it might work better and we can figure out where the block is occuring in port handling of the TC. I would then suggest trying a different firmware level.. go back one or two levels and see if the problem was introduced lately.
Do an extensive google search for ftp port forwarding on any apple router and see if other people are running into the same issue. Or how they have set it up.
But I think you will find there are sometimes issues with either passive or active ftp and it is better to simply use the other method.

  • Time Capsule vs Synology NAS

    Hey everyone,
So my current set up at the moment is a Mac Mini with a 3TB external hard drive hooked up for my iTunes library and a 1TB external hard drive used for Time Machine backups for the Mac Mini and 2 Macbook Pros.
I can't decide which would be better to use a Time Capsule or a Synology NAS for the following:
My iTunes library to share to my Apple TV, and other iDevices.
Time Machine backups for all 3 computers and 2 iPhones and 2 iPads
And possibly a file sharing location for use with OS X Server.
And Caching location for app downloads used with OS X Server
What device do you think would be better to use.

Is your mini running OSX server now??
If you plan to install a computer running Server, then I would work out that setup..
This is a "don't quote me" but when you use a server.. you don't want the files to be on network drives.
ie using a server and using network drives (either TC or Synology) means you have competing requirements.
Server should have local disks so it has full control over permissions etc.
Synology in particular is designed as a server replacement.. you don't use a small server plus a synology. You can use TC but only as TM backup location and router.
    For your bullet points.
My iTunes library to share to my Apple TV, and other iDevices.
The Synology would be better.. but you still will need a computer running. Home serving of iTunes must be done via a computer.. therefore your library is located in the wrong place. The built in iTunes in the synology.. is really ??? Sorry cannot say much until I get it setup and running.. !!
Time Machine backups for all 3 computers and 2 iPhones and 2 iPads
Any will do as TM target. iOS devices backup to iTunes or iCloud.. There is no TM for iOS. And it will need a real iTunes.. not synology itunes.
And possibly a file sharing location for use with OS X Server.
And Caching location for app downloads used with OS X Server
You are using the Synology as dumb storage. A USB drive plugged into the OS X Server computer will be faster, cheaper and more reliable. You are effectively buying two servers and bypassing on of them to simply use its hard disk.. pointless.

  • Time Capsule FTP access

I just bought and setup a 1TB Time Capsule that is working perfectly in my house. I am trying to find out how I can access the drive on the TC from a windows machine on the internet. I've setup file sharing and can see the drive from my MBPro using connect to server, but can't seem to get to it from a windows machine either through FTP or windows file sharing.
Has anyone tried this and / or have suggestions?

Ok, here is the response, did not work for me, can any of you others try and let me know:
I have gotten a response back from engineering. Part of it quoted as below:
"From an outside the local network computer you should then be able to access the drive by connecting to the server (= TC) from a Mac with Finder > Go > Connect to server...afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ <afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/> <TC name>/
From an outside the local network computer you should then be able to access the drive by connecting to the server (= TC) from a Windows Machine by typing the following into a browser... smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ <smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/> <TC name>/
    - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the real world IP the TC gets assigned form the ISP (this may change if the ISP changes the IP addresses frequently. The customer will need to consult the ISP for that)
    - <TC name> is the name if the TC the customer has set in Airport Utility > Manual Mode > Airport > Time Capsule > Time Capsule Name
Note: TC does SMB and AFP at the same time automatically
Make sure the ISP allows traffic on port 548, that is the one used for file sharing to access the disk fro local and wide area networks.

  • Time capsule ftp port forwarding

    Hi.
Just got a new time capsule and have discovered that the connection speed to my ftp server is MUCH slower.
I've tried playing around with port forwarding but haven't managed to get it sorted out.
I did discover during my attempts that switching the TC over to bridge mode fixed everything. Didn't want that security setup though!
Current setup is modem (bridge mode) > ethernet > time capsule (wirelessly routing via nat-dhcp)
I'm not quite sure what i'm doing with the port forwarding settings...i've tried changing the dhcp mode to manual on my mac
i've also added various ports (21,22,80, 115) to the time capsules' port settings
according to http://www.yougetsignal.com the only open port is 21
    any tips?? very grateful!

You need to look carefully at how ftp gets through NAT.. and if the ftp client can open ports itself .. which way are you going, out or in?
Is the client active or passive ftp? You think ftp is this simple protocol but there are variations and some handle NAT better than others.. it is also going to need specific ports opened higher up the range.
Some clients allow you to dictate the port and others open ports at random.
    See the info here.

  • Can I set up an FTP server from a networked Time Capsule?

I've been looking around and can't seem to find this specific question addressed anywhere, so I'm hoping someone knows the answer to this.
I have a Time Capsule connected directly to my router. Other than its intended purpose, I would like to connect an external USB hard drive to it, and use that as an accessible FTP server for a select few.
To my understanding, port forwarding the router and giving WAN access would allow any user to see the entirety of the Time Capsule - which I do not want. I only want to share this one drive and have it maintained by an FTP login/password. I would then share this drive on the internal network.
Is this possible? Or will I have to run the FTP server off one of my workstations?
    Cheers.

Not in usable and reliable way no.. many things are possible.. if you have the (various bad words for foolishness or courage)... but it is too hard as there is no hacked firmware out there for a TC. It is a device intended for TM backups of laptops by wireless. Anything else is restricted strictly to what Apple want you to use it for. You can buy a cheap NAS, single disk unit will almost inevitably have FTP in them.. over network FTP is ok but remember it is not secure so you want SFTP for internet access.. And be warned.. FTP itself will be blocked from WAN on the TC.
There are severe FTP issues with the AE/TC.. the last couple of versions of the Gen1-5 firmware as well as the Gen 6.. See this thread.

I think will condemn you to replacement of the TC by a router that actually conforms to standards if you are trying to forward it to a workstation or NAS even.
SFTP might work.. see this thread.

  • Can i use my time capsule as ftp server

    Hello to everyone,
resently I have read in the net that it is possible to set the time capsule as ftp server and also as a local server.
Can enyone explain me how to do it pracally?
Thank to people hwo will help in advance.

You heard wrong.. there is no ftp server in the TC..
It can do SMB to windows and AFP to apple.. and that my friend is that.
If you load files onto the TC you can access them remotely only via AFP.. google search remote access time capsule.

  • Help ReadyNAS NV+ as FTP server using Apple Time Capsule

I am setting this up for somebody else. I followed http://www.readynas.com/?p=1682 to configure the ReadyNAS RND4000 NV+ and then followed http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Designing_AirPort_Networks_10.5-Windows.pdf starting on page 54 to limited success. At times I could log into the FTP server and it would Auth, but then timeout. Swapped it out with my Netgear WNR2000 and configured it and it works great. What am I missing on the Apple Time Capsule that only took me 5min to do on the WNR2000? Called Apple Care and they said they could not help since they do not provide phone support for FTP. I have spent nearly 6hrs on this and all I know is that I had it working within 5min using my WNR2000, but they really want to use their Time Capsule and I just can not get it to work.

FTP is a lot trickier than it looks and unfortunately opening ports even in a fixed range as you are doing on the readynas, (following that post you referenced). Did you open 5000-5020 for FTP?
As an odd co-incidence.. the apple utility uses port 5009 to access the TC.. when you forwarded ports in the area of the Apple Utility you may well have wreaked something. Try using different port range above 10,000.
I can understand why the Apple people would not talk to you.. they have deliberately left out ftp as a method of access to the TC.. but I have a suspicion that something else even inside it might be running ftp.. in which case when you port forward you might be messing up the internals. Or the internals are messing with you. To say nothing of the access to the internal server which could be blocked from remote access.. even if you forward the port. Apple phone support workers will have no idea about this stuff.
My recommendation for a windows network.. use a router that has normal http access. Keep the TC in the network bridged. You can get Netgear router cheap.
My other comment is, ftp has no security other than password.. it is open to man in middle attacks because passwords are sent in the clear. It is not really a great method of remote access unless you have a walled off ftp store that you don't care if others access. If you want to buy another router, get something that does vpn and use vpn to access the network.
BTW Apple do break things like vpn, ftp, telnet in some versions of their firmware.. this is a well known issue and happens across all the apple routers.. since Apple does not use those ports themselves they don't seem to give any great deal of attention to bug catching.. if you run apple network with apple products you won't need it.
    eg
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1435270?start=0&tstart=0
Do a google search for time capsule or airport (fundamentally the same thing).
I stick to my recommendation.. keep the TC as a bridged device... just buy another router.

  • Time Capsule and ssh or ftp

    Dear All,
I got a Time Capsule which is plugged into a network. I entered an static ip address. I disabled the wireless, but I think to enable it later.
I would like to be able to firstly download or upload document, from home or from any computer, with ssh or with ftp.
I could not find how to do it.
(I do no have it yet with me) If I am not wrong from NAT tab, I can activate services. Isaw somethink like "file sharing", " ssh service", "ftp service".
I tryed to configure ssh, but without success.
Some one could give me soe tips to use Time Capsule via ssh, to upload and download files.
(I do not really like ftp, because is not really secure and I think sftp is not available with Time Capsule)
    Many thank

But finnaly it does not matter if I can not ssh. Can I use rsync?
Actually, time capsule is plug the the netwrok and has an ip adress fix.
I have a mac contected into the same network.
What I absultely need, is to be able to see the content of the Time capsule from my macbook pro (in command line, it is also fine)
And would it be possible to use rsync to back up my data and restore it?
You can configure your Time Capsule to share its disk over the WAN (AirPort Utility Disks/Disks panel), which would include the Internet. A MobileMe account (f you have or are willing to buy one) would make it easy to connect to your Time Capsule when you are away from your LAN, but if your Time Capsule has a static WAN IP address, there should be a way to connect to it from the Internet. In the Finder menu Go -> Connect to Server menu I believe the format would be "afp://xxx.xx.xx.xx", where the x's represent that IP address. If I don't have these details exactly correct, someone else should be able to help.

  • Back and sharing solution for Macbook Pro - Synology or Time Capsule?

    Hi
    Hi,
My plan is to have a complete new efficient and flexible set up. I have decided to buy the new Macbook 13inch Pro with 16MB Ram and 3.1 Ghz i7 processor with 256GB glash drive.
I want an external solution for my storage and sharing needs.
    Minimum requirements -
    - Time Machine backup support for computer
    - External storage for 95% of my data (kind of like dropbox) including music, movies, photos, business and personal data, but that can be accessed easily and quickly and functions properly on my computer. (e.g when connecting to itunes and other apps)
    - Remote access to this data when required
    Additional Preferences
    - Easy to use (I am a newbie on Mac laptops!)
    - Back up additional devices or at least upload photos from ipad and iphone
    - Connect movies to Roku
    - Easy access to data wirelessly from outside the country
    - Support external plugin hard drive
    - Quiet and low power consumption
I like the flexibility of the Synology but I know that apple usually works best with apple devices, so due to my inexperience in the apple environment I need a little help.
Is the Synology best for my needs (if so which model) or the Time Capsule and just plug in my usb hard drive? (I don't want to spend a fortune but $100 more for the best set up is acceptable)
Thanks so much for your help
    Mike

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't what you want to hear. I know that Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to use the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • How to use FTP with Time Capsule Gen4

I am having difficulty setting up FTP with my Time Capsule.  This is the first time I have attempted using FTP on the Time Casule and have read through some documentation and believe I have it set up correctly but could be wrong.  I am using FileZilla and tried to connect but the connection fails therefore my post for assistance.
If someone could provide me the basics or links for installation/testing and etc.. I would very much appreciate it.  At this point I feel I just need to start over.
    Thanks,

Port forwarding for FTP is rather more complex than it first seems..
Ports that need to be open depend on type of FTP.. ie active or passive.
Read the discussion of ftp through NAT.
    http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html
Make sure the firewall on the computer that is running ftp is off.
And I guess in the end.. if you have a different router give that a go.. it can help identify where the problem is.
If you are using v6 airport utility.. opening ports is not at all easy either.. definitely recommend you install 5.6 utility.
If you are still on lion just install it.. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

  • Setting up Time Capsule as FTP server

I am trying to set up my Time Capsule as a FTP server, so that my D-link surveillance network video camera can send its footage to the FTP server. The D-link tool bsically requires the following input:
IP address to the FTP server
    Port (21 is default)
    User name
    Password
    Path on FTP server
As I didn't get it to work from the D-link tool I browsed around and found this FTP test http://www.infobyip.com/ftptest.php which is good since it is basically a replica of the D-link set-up tool. But it doesn't work here either so I am obviously doing something wrong.
The IP address I thought I could get from the Airport Utility, see screen dump below.
The user name and password I thought I could get by defining access to hard drives as "via account" (with user name and password) via Airport Utility, see screen dump below.
But nothing works, I fail to connect to the FTP via the tool linked to above.
What do I do wrong? What have I missed?
    Thanks in advance.

LOL.. you assumed the TC has FTP access.. it doesn't.. !!
There is no access for any file protocol except, AFP for apple and SMB for windows..
If you can, swap the camera over to using SMB file protocol.
For SMB to work make sure all naming in the TC complies to SMB standard. Apple does not and it looks like the names are wrong to me.
So TC name, wireless names, disk share name.
Short.. 20 characters at most.. 5-10 is good.
    No spaces.
    Pure alphanumeric.
Anything in the windows world should be able to copy files to shared folder in a disk.
On the file sharing page of the TC you may need to add, WORKGROUP and turn on the guest account can also help.

  • Time Capsule Does Not Port Forward FTP Ports

    Hey there,
I recently purchased a Time Capsule, and I found out that while it fixes the NAT-PMP bug found in my previous AirPort Extreme Base Station (Gigabit-N), it introduces a new problem which makes it refuse to forward port 21 properly.
It seems to me that the Time Capsule has some sort of FTP server built in, and is either enabled but closes connection on client connection, or disabled but still listens for client connection.
This message is what I get when I connect to my IP via FTP from the WAN side (FTP port forwarded to a local machine with an IP 10.0.0.8):
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection.
When it is accessed from the LAN of course, I can connect to 10.0.0.8 with no problem. However, what is interesting is if I connect to the Time Capsule via FTP I get this as well:
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection.
Thus, I am 100% certain that the FTP message I see when I connect from WAN is from the Time Capsule instead of the machine I port forwarded to.
Apple needs to fix this annoying problem and at the same time fixes some VPN issues I'm having with my Nortel VPN client (4.68). It was all working when I had the AirPort Extreme Base Station.

I am having a problem establishing an FTP session that is started with my FTP Client (CuteFTP) on my local network and attempting to connect to an FTP Server with one of my hosting providers. My first few attempts used FTPS (Secure FTP) as that is what I typically use when transferring FTP packets over the net. Well, this didn't work so I thought maybe the Time Capsule had a problem inspecting the encrypted packets so I switched to standard clear-text FTP just to see if the Time Capsule handles FTP session management functions correctly. This didn't work either. I'm using PASV FTP and have never had a problem before with my CISCO Router or with another consumer-based NAT router. I don't believe that the Server on the Internet gets the initial request on port 21 as I believe the Time Capsule is not allowing the packet to pass and my FTP Client spits back an error message : "Couldn't access FTP service " "Connection Failed". I have also used "Terminal" and initiated the ftp utility and attempted to connect to the same server and receive the following error message : "421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection.". I have attempted to put my computer in the DMZ by using the Default Host feature on the Time Capsule but that resulted in the same errors. I believe that I have tried most of the settings available on the Time Capsule to attempt to get this to work but no luck yet. If the packet is getting through to the server and the response back on the current ephemeral port is not getting through the Time Capsule I'm really hoping the solution is not having to port map all ephemeral ports as this is in the tens of thousands. Has anyone successfully established an FTP Session (Secure or Not) from your local client through the Time Capsule to a Server on the Internet. If so, could you help by providing any Time Capsule settings that were required for this to function properly....Thanks in Advance.
Note: I have attempted to ftp to several different public ftp servers on the Internet and get the same error results. I have no problems ftping to local serverson my local network.
