Time Capsule Goes Missing

As a newbie to Apple and convinced I was doing the right thing buying the TimeCapsule to make a copy of my data I have come across a little problem that does not appear to be the same as most are having on the forum. Sorry this is a little long but I cannot explain it briefly.
The TimeCapsule is running in Bridge Mode with a fixed IP address 192.168.0.9, the DHCP service is off. I have a Netgear DG834GT with the wireless turned off providing the DHCP service and access to the internet at 192.168.0.1. Connected to the TimeCapsule (500Gb version) is a USB hard drive to give another 400Gb. The unit is in "Create a wireless network" mode on Channel 2 as my neighbours systems on 11 and 6 and 9 appear to degrade my signal but 2 provides a constant 130 transmit rate under the Finder bar's icon for the airport. We were told to use WPA/WPA2 not WEP, so it does with a 63 character key and the grade(?) is n (compatible with b/g) so the three computers we have will work via the one unit.
So, everything works fine, the windows xp machine and the imac 17" (Leopard 10.5.2 with airport 5.3.1) can access the internet with no dropouts, we can print, and can access all the storage. Even the TimeCapsule software is working well now that I have adjusted how often it launches (every hour was a bit extreme when it backs up 1.2Gb each time because of my email!), the first backup was done in a little over 3 hours with no problems that I am aware of. Its even quiet enough to sit in the bedroom at night left switched on.
Just one small problem is stopping me from liking this device, every 24hours or so after the first day or use the unit just vanishes off the network. You cannot ping the unit, the airport software on the imac cannot see it, even when I put the ip address in as fixed (192.168.0.23) it still isn't there. That is until you unplug the TimeCapsule leave it a minute and then power it back on again? The unit is not particularly hot, I can comfortably put my hand on the top or the bottom without worry.
I really want to understand if something is wrong with the unit or is there some software glitch going on which will be fixed soon? Does it go to sleep and it isn't waking back up again?
Hope someone can help.
Andy

Thanks to the discussion board I was able to narrow things down a lot and hopefully resolved my problem. With the help of my old Windows XP machine I set the logging on the time capsule to be sent over the wired network via the router. It would appear the WAN port of the time capsule was working even though the mac could not access it.
Anyway, after watching several items on the discussions over the past week I have tried many different things from making sure there are no spaces in the name of the unit and changing the default name to some more little drastic measures, I now appear to have a working unit.
The loss of connection to the unit hopefully has been identified as the mac address controlling. I had the unit set to Timed access, default as disabled and the rest of the families addresses in the unit on full day. Setting this to disabled a little over 30 hours ago and no-one has lost access to the unit, yet!
To improve the signal the unit now sits on a mouse mat vertically, held in position by an old USB drive mount, gives me another 10% of signal in my house that has mesh in the walls. The unit also appears to run cooler too....
These two ideas are not ideal as I have lost some of my wireless security but found a way on the discussion board of hiding the SSID and entering a different 63 character WPA/WPA2 key will keep nastiness at bay.
I hope this provides someone insight to what may be going on with the Time Capsule.

  • Date and time keeps going missing!

Hi everybody, my date and time keeps going missing from the top bar every time I turn on my mac - sometimes other things go missing, like the airport status.
It used to happen just once a fortnight but after I installed the latest security update, it seems to be happening every time. Does anybody have a reason/fix? Would be much appreciated. Thankyou!

Hi appleoclock, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Not sure this works since that Qursical update, but the cure for that used to be...
    Apple Menu Bar Icons Gone
You've probably got a couple of corrupt preference files.
    In "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences", delete com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
In "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost", delete com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).

  • Time Capsule 2TB missing "Share Disks over WAN" option

I bought a time capsule about a month ago. Setup was no problem. Have a MobileMe account. Successfully setup remote access using MobileMe. Needed to select "Share Disks Over WAN" under the file sharing tab which is under the disk tab in setup in order to make it work.
Bought another time capsule yesterday and trying to setup in another location. This model does not have that "Share Disks Over WAN" option. Am I missing something? Did Apple make a change? I am not able to access this new drive remotely now, even with my MobileMe account active.

"As I write this, I am using my wife's iPad to browse files and folders on the Time Capsule disk. I can switch over to the disk attached to the AirPort Extreme with a single tap."
Awesome!  Hopefully I will have the same luck as you!
"I said that Filebrowser will do a very nice job. One of my support policies is that I never offer advice or instructions unless I have done it myself.  "
Well that's good to know going forward!
    "Make sense?"
    Yep - no confusion whatsoever.

  • Time capsule goes for "sleep mode" ?

    Hey Guys,
    Im using a Time Capsule (called TC below) 2 TB, the latest version, mostly for two things;
I download files to directly to the TC harddrive and i also store some of my music on it.
The first problem is that when i download files directly to it... The download speed goes up to a couple of Mbit/s and then down to zero again... Then up again, and down to zero again. It's unstable. This dosen't happen when i download the files directly to my Macintosh HD.
The second problem is when i want to play music from the TC, for example on Itunes or on Traktor... It has a long delay for a couple of seconds from the time that i press play and the actual time that the song starts playing.
Does anyone have the same problems?
I think it is because the TC goes in some kind of "sleep mode" and therefore it has to "wake up" to be able to play the files on it, or store files on it.
Does anyone know if it is possible to turn off the sleep mode?
    Thanks in advance!

The green drive in the TC is designed to spin down as soon as data transfer finishes and it will spin up when demand is made on the drive.. it is standard for green drive but the TC is particularly agressive .. spinning down at the slightest pause..
There is no fix. The TC is not designed as current hard drive nor as a media streamer.. it is designed as backup target for Time Machine.. and that is that..
You could pull the disk out and replace it with a drive that will ignore spin down eg most enterprise type drives.. but you will void warranty doing it.

  • Time Capsule goes back to blinking yellow.

I have now rebooted my Time Capsule several times since setup a couple weeks ago to restore the solid green light. Ironically everything seems to continue working (internet and backup) with the blinking yellow - I think. How do I stop the time capsule from going back to a warning sign? And is there truly something I should be concerned about when it is blinking yellow? I am running two MacBook Pros and my wife and I both take them to other locations out of range and usually just "close the lid" on our laptops without powering off the MacBooks (Yes, occasionally we do deliberately power down and reboot - I've been told that's good to do now and again). Love the fact that as soon as we arrive home, and start using the Macs, the backup process begins automatically. Want to make sure that process is continuing without interruption. That's why we bought Time Capsule. Thanks!

And is there truly something I should be concerned about when it is blinking yellow?
A green light signals that eveything is working normally on the Time Capsule.
A flashing amber light is doing so for a reason. To find out why....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line on the summary page) and another window will open to explain why the Time Capsule is complaining, along with suggested remedies
If everything appears to be normal on the network, the flashing amber light might be a message that there is an update available for your Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule Hd Missing

I have the 500 gig Time Capsule and I have the imac 2.4. The time capsule wireless network is working fine, Air speaker are fine, but Hard drive on time capsule seems to be missing. I have tried reboot and reseting the time capsule but no luck. I tried to view the hd using Disk utility but no luck and it does not appear under finder or Airport Util preferences. I currently have an external hd backing up for now but want to use time capsule to its fullest.

You can try and check under Time Machine Preferences -> Manual Setup -> Disks -> File Sharing -> Enable. Then you can enter a password.
Good luck and welcome to Apple Discussions!

  • Time Capsule Now Missing as Wireless Device

All of a sudden TC is no longer available as a wireless device for back-up to time machine. However, I am still connecting to the internet wirelessly through it.
Any suggestions on how I can get it up and available again?

You should reset it and configure from the beginning its network and passwords. Then you shall get stuck in my own situation...

  • Time Capsule deleted my old files

I bought a Time Capsule in February this year and after that it has been around every where I was. I did a first "big" backup from my Macbook Pro and every since that the backup did work automatically in the background.
But recently I did go into some folder of mine and turn on the Time Capsule to check for some older files I deleted and I figured out the Time Capsule goes back only till 6th October this year. So can somebody explain to me where is all my old data from February till October, the files I deleted and the old backups?
I also saw that my backup file did have a name that looked like that: "Dejan's MacBook Pro (4).sparsebundle". So what is the number "(4) doing there and again where and how I can access my old files or what happened?
    Thanks!

goes back only till 6th October this year.
Did you update the computer to Yosemite that day.. or perhaps the day after.. ??
The way TM works on Yosemite is still rather mysterious to us.. but if it is like Mavericks .. the backups are still there.. mostly but it will take Yosemite 3 days or so (longer over wireless) to actually index it. The new index function in Yosemite is super slow apparently.
You can manually bypass using TM and directly open the sparsebundle in finder and get your files. See the material in Pondini for help
Q15 in particular but 14-17 is worth reading. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
Also please note that when you actually delete files.. not just version them.. at anytime TM can delete the files in the backup.. you are trusting TM as an archive system.. it is not.. and you should not use it that way. See Q12, 20 in same reference.
I also saw that my backup file did have a name that looked like that: "Dejan's MacBook Pro (4).sparsebundle".
You are having network issues.. the same name cannot appear on two computers on the network. The Mac will automatically increment its name so that the old version and the new version can be on the network at the same time.. Of course the old one is not really there.. just its ghost.. somehow apple networks do have ghosting issues.. and it is not uncommon issue.. what is more you might have multiple sparsebundles on the TC.. check out if there are other backups using the older names of the computer.. They will then give you access to your missing files.

  • Time Capsule lost

I set up my time capsulate 3 days ago for two of my Macs and it worked perfectly for 2 days. I went to add an additional MacBook but none of my Macs can see the Time Capsule anymore, but it still shows then green light. I tried unplugging and restarting. Any ideas?

Restart everything.. so shut down the modem and all the way to the Macs.. restart in order.. modem.. Router/TC.. Macs.. wait 2 min for each to restart.
The TC should become available again.
Next time it goes missing. Access it via the finder / go /go to server
Using the IP address not the name. ie AFP://IPAddressTC by default it will be 10.0.1.1 but substitiute what it actually is in your network.. If you have it bridged, use some method to keep the TC locked to one address.

  • Time Capsule Can't Identify Wireless Connection

So, I have a brand new MacBook Pro and I have a Time Capsule that I am trying to set up. I attempted without the Ethernet cord to begin with, but the amber light continued to blink so I looked in the instructions to see that I should use and ethernet cord, but the AirPort doesn't recognize my apartments wireless connection with or without the cord. What can I do? I am a new Mac user and don't know if I did something wrong or not, Please help me!

OK, let us start over. When you originally stated "my apartments wireless connection" I assumed wrongly that this was a wireless service provided by your apartment management. However it appears from your other posts that you have a wireless router which is creating this wireless network for yourself. That makes it easier.
Disconnect and power off the Time Capsule.
Is your Time Capsule going to be physically located near the wireless router or did you want it located elsewhere?
If the Time Capsule is going to be physically located near the wireless router, connect the Time Capsule to the wireless router via Ethernet.
Do a hard reset of the Time Capsule. You can refer to Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ.
On your MacBook Pro, use AirPort Utility to wirelessly configure the Time Capsule:
If the Time Capsule is not going to be physically located near the wireless router, you will configure the Time Capsule to wirelessly join the network provided by the wireless router.
If the Time Capsule is going to be physically located near the wireless router, you will configure the Time Capsule to act as a bridge (not sharing an IP address).
Please let me know if you have problems with any of those steps.

  • Time Capsule can't be mounted

Periodically, my Time Capsule goes wonky. The light usually glows amber when this is happening, and obviously I can't connect any of the clients to it.
    The set up is...
DSL modem (transparent bridge) -> Airport Extreme -> Time Capsule (extending the wireless network)
The Time Capsule is not plugged into the wired network, only the wireless.
    Where can I start looking?

Every day, my Internet connection goes off line. The connection is Time Capsule to a cable modem. I had no problem like this with my old Airport Extreme. I have 3 Macbooks and one is always being disconnected from Time Machine. I have to reboot the laptop to re-connect. Sometimes the other MacBooks stay connected, and only one is off line. My iPod Touch never gets disconnected.

  • How can I close my Time Machine Sparsebundle so Time Capsule can do a scheduled backup?

"Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Your Time Capsule". The backup disk image “/Volumes/Steven Weinberg's Time Caps-1/Steven Weinberg’s MacBook Pro (4).sparsebundle” is already in use."
I have both a Time Capsule and a 2Tb external drive using Time Machine to back up my laptop.
Is it as simple as when the Time Capsule goes to do a backup and finds that the other drive is in the midst of using Time Machine to do its backup that I get this notice on my desktop?
It's 10:30 AM now.  The last Time Capsule backup was almost 12 hours ago.
There have already been 6 Time Machine backups today on the 2nd drive.
Sounds like the Time Capsule really is being blocked from doing its job.
THe 1 Tb Time Capsule backs up to a .sparsebundle document which fills the Time Capsule at 985 Gb.  You can't open and peek inside the .sparsebundle backup file.
The other drive backs up to a .backupdb folder within which are subfolders for each backup which appears to be a complete recreation of thebacked-up 500 Gb hard drive on my MacBook Pro laptop.  And even though there are 37 separate folders with backups going back to Sept 2013 when I installed the second backup drive, it's only used about 500 Gb of its 2 Tb capacity.
    1.  How can I solve my primary problem of freeing up the .sparsebundle file for the Time Capsule?
    2.  Since both drives are using Time Machine to do the backup, why are they producing such diffrent backup file structures?

Have you run Repair Disk on it?
I now realize that the folder in which the problem file(s) are stored on the backup,.DocumentRevisions-V100, is the folder in which OS X stores its versioning data for all users. I am now trying to work out whether I can safely delete these files from the backup
That does get damaged on occasion.  I haven't seen it in quite a while, so it's pretty rare.
You can delete it from the backups, via the TM interface, but you must be able to show invisible items).
First, open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Be very careful with this app.  It's a direct link into UNIX, the underpinnings of OSX, but without the protections of OSX.
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this:  <Computer Name>:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name).  It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor.
Copy, do not type, the following after the prompt:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1
    and press Return.
You should just see the prompt again.
Then see Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #12 to delete all the backups of it.
and from the live system filestore so they don't get copied out to a backup again.
Yes. You will, of course, lose all previous versions, but since the file is corrupted, you may have lost some, most, or all of them already.
When done, run the same command to hide the invisible items, but replace the "1" with a zero.

  • Am I better off getting Airport Extreme of Time Capsule

I am looking to upgrade my wireless router and I need a new external Hard drive.  I store mainly music and movies and would like to be able to easily   them .  What is the best way to go?

There is the world of difference between external drive and network drive.
A hard disk plugged into an airport extreme (or a Time Capsule being about the same but faster.). are network drives.. they are slow, even the TC is much slower than USB3 plugged directly into the computer.. even USB2 is faster than usb plugged into airport. It only has USB2 port but over network will go at half the speed of direct access USB2 on the computer. USB3.. who knows Apple might include it in the next Time Capsule/Airport Extreme.
An external drive must be plugged directly into the computer and is controlled by the computer. You cannot ever make a Time Capsule an external drive. It is now and forevermore a network drive.. The network drive is controlled by the airport it is associated with.. therefore it cannot be formatted, partitioned or anything else by the computer. A USB drive can be plugged into the computer directly to do those things.. A Time Capsule is now and forevermore locked inside its box.. unless you want to get tricky and void warranty and remove it. NOTE.. if the Time Capsule goes bad.. apple will not help you recover files.. they will be lost forever.. TC has no mechanism to backup files.. and Time Machine cannot backup files on network drives.. therefore using a TC to store files for your network is risky.. and you will need to step outside the apple world to make safe use of it. Apple do not make a NAS.. TC is not a NAS.. if you want a NAS buy one from one of the major NAS manufacturers, eg QNAP, Synology, Netgear, WD. etc.
The external drive is faster, cheaper and more reliable than a Time Capsule.. only problem is .. you need to plug it in.
If you want to access files from laptop over wireless then Time Capsule is a better choice because the drive is substantially faster. The price difference between an Extreme and a Time Capsule is not significantly greater than cost of the Extreme plus a hard disk.

  • Appleworks file corruption with Time Capsule

i've been working on multiple word processing files in appleworks the last couple of days when my time capsule begins to backup. every time i've had files open, they have been corrupted, and would not save. also, in my finder, i find these files labeled as huge strings of numbers and capital letters. i can open them and it's the last version i saved before the time capsule kicked in. (however, it's sort of like a ghost file - -i can see it, but i can't save any new information). now i'm paranoid and saving constantly, in case the time capsule pops up while i'm working! anyone else have this corrupt file problem with their time capsule? (we just got it, and we run leopard)

sorry.. i've been away for awhile..
no, i am talking about files which i have PREVIOUSLY created (say "dog.cwk") and have open, and am in the process of changing data when the time capsule clicks in. when the time capsule goes no while i am working in the file, two things happen. 1) i cannot resave the file, and must rename it to get it to save (so i will now have 2 files, dog.cwk and dog1.cwk) AND at the same time a file is automatically created that is named something like this:MAD321E581167430232-8119 (an actual file name that was created during one of these occurences). so i end up with 3 files: the original, the one i had to create to resave, and a third file that i don't know exists until i go into the hard drive to find out where my original went!
also, if i save again while the time capsule is on, i can save to dog1.cwk, but it might create another file called MAD321E581167430232-8119-1. i've only had this happen once, but it's still weird.
so, i am working on one file and i end up with 3 or 4.. and i can access and work in the original, but can't SAVE any changes.
now i find out it happens in my photoshop files as well - so it looks like a time capsule issue or a hard drive issue, rather than just a single software issue.

  • Configure syslog for Time Capsule

I have seen some items on this in the forums, but to be honest..I would this would be pretty simple to find somewhere, but none of what I see seems to work, plus like 2 - 3 years old...whats up with that?
Can someone give me instructions for setting up syslog config for Time Capsule, going to the latest Apple Mini
    Thanks, Joshua

This Apple article may not give you the whole story, but it may help.  One thing it doesn't seem to do is tell you where to find that information on the Mac that's receiving the Syslog information.  Since you know enough about that to ask, I'll hope that you already know that.
