Time Capsule has limited range - Airport Extreme worked fine. Solutions???

I have used Airport Express with my 2 Macs - Mac Pro (near the AE and modem, and MacBook Pro, normally used about 25 feet away, in another room. No problems. UNTIL I added Time Capsule. My access to the internet on the laptop is very, very slow. So bad, in fact, that I unplugged the TC, and am now using the AE once again. I really need to have everything backed up, which is why I bought the 2TB Time Capsule. Does anyone have solutions for this?

Duane:
I'm getting closer, but still have a problem.
AE has only one channel to work with, and it's set on Channel 1.
However, Time Capsule has two radio channel selections. The 2.4 GHz channel can be set on Channel 1, which I have done. But the 5 GHz channel 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161
I'm going through trial and error with the higher number channels, but have had no success when I move the laptop away from the Time Capsule unit.

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

  • Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses

Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses?  The hard drive on the TC quit working.

I do plan on using an external USB HDD for time machine backups.  I have both 802.11g and 802.11n used for playing music via stereos.
I would recommend against it. Apple does not support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks (USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme). Although folks have done so, we get a number of them here asking for help with their corrupted backups. If your backups are critical to you, please use another means (like connecting the USB HDD directly to your Mac) to do so.

Bridge the TC.. plug it into the AEBS with ethernet.

  • Time capsule not recognized by airport extreme - first time setup challenge

Air port utility not recognizing time capsule. We have airport extreme and time capsule (recent purchase to back up 2 wireless mac laptops and the G5 which is connected to the modem). Modem is conected to airport extreme and I connected the Time capsule via ethernet as I thought the speed would be 1GB and faster than wireless "n." Somehow now the airport extreme does not recognize the time capsule. In the network utility, airport is not listed, only ethernet and firewire. What steps should I take to enable time capsule to back up the laptops wirelessly as well as the G5 (non-wireless.) Thanks!

I would hold the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 5-10 seconds and I would wait to connect it to the AirPort Extreme to see if you can set it up. If you can access the Time Capsule with AirPort Utility then I would plug it into the AirPort Extreme and continue your setup.

I want to replace a four year old Time Capsule for a new Airport Extreme, how difficult is it? The ADSL connection come from a Modern Router provide by the local Telephone company.

Reply back when you get the new device, but in short, you'll have to put your extreme in bridge mode and just connect the same wires as your current TC.

  • How to connect a Time Capsule to an existing Airport Extreme?

I have an Airport Extreme connected to my broadband internet modem. This Airport Extreme is also connected to my audio system to be used by iTunes.
Recently I brougth my Time Capsule from another location to be included in the Airport Extreme network. I want to continue using Time Machine on the Time Capsule, and iTunes on the Airport Extreme.
I could get this to work, by connecting the Time Capsule to my modem, and setting it up to extend an existing network (the Airport Extreme network). Airport Extreme and Time Capsule are situated next to each other. However, performance of Time Machine was horrible, far too slow. If I connect my MacBook to the Time Capsule by an ethernet cable, it does not work.
When I set up the Time Capsule to create another wireless network, performance of Time Machine is okay. I cannot use iTunes on the Airport Extreme in that case. I have to switch networks for that.
I'm sure it should be possible to have both an Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule in one network, use iTunes on the Extreme, and Time Machine on the Time Capsule. But I do not know how it should be arranged.
    Can anyone solve this problem?
    Greetings from Holland, Koen

+What surprises me is that with setting 1 (TC joining AX) the Time Capsule has an option to extend the range of the network being joined.+
Yes, but it will only "extend" if you have a newer version of the AirPort Express, the 802.11"n" version. If you have an older "b/g" version of the AirPort Express, you can set the Time Capsule to "extend", but it won't and you'll have problems.
+With setting 2 (AX joining TC) the Airport Express does not seem to have this option.+
This probably confirms that you have an older "b/g" version of the AirPort Express. It does not have the "extend" feature.
+Could it be this option (which I did not switch off in my earlier experiments) which gave me such terribly bad transfer rates to my Time Capsule harddisk?+
That's probably the reason since the older version of the AirPort Express cannot be configured to "extend".

  • Airport Extreme works fine but I can't see it in Airport Utility

Have seen numerous posts on this issue but no solutions!
I have a MB Pro running 10.4.11, Airport Extreme and Airport Utility 5.2.1. The Airport Extreme works perfectly, with no connection issues, but I cannot see it anymore in Airport Utility. I have another Airport Express hooked up to my stereo (for airtunes only), and can see this in Airport Utility, but not the Extreme. The Extreme used to appear here, but no more. Otherwise works fine. Just need to be able to reconfigure it.
Anyone know what the fix is????

I have this same issue. Internet works, I can connect to it, but i doesn't show in the Airport Utility. Also, it doesn't let me connect to other computers or my AirDIsk. I am using 10.5. Unplug and plugin style reset fixes it...for a while. Any ideas anyone?

  • Extend Time Capsule Wireless Network with Airport Extreme

I tried to install two base stations in my house. The first one is the Time Capsule which I use as my main router connected to the DSL modem by Ethernet and which has the main wireless network. The second is an Airport Extreme Base Station which tries to connect wirelessly to Time Capsule to extend the wireless network. I use WPA2 Personal as a security mode and it says there is an error at the end when it reconfigures the Airport Base Station --- questions: does it normally work with these two devices in that order? What process to make it work?”

use Airport Utility manual set up button and place the secondary router in bridge mode then configure your wireless setting.

  • Adding Wireless-N-ONLY Time Capsule to Dual-Band Airport Extreme Network?

I have a dual-band airport extreme which I have configured to create both a wireless-a/b/g/n SSID on my network, as well as a second SSID which is Wireless-N-ONLY (meant to be used with my Time Capsule so that all backups to the Time Capsule via Time Machine are only ever done via Wireless-N).
My Airport Extreme is already configured, and now I just have to configure my Time Capsule on my network...
Can someone briefly run through the "assist me" steps in the Airport Utility that I'd want to follow to configure my Time Capsule so that it's available on my dual-band base station's wireless-N-ONLY network and so that it's not transmitting or receiving any other wireless protocol other than wireless-N?
    Thanks!

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for your earlier feedback. I now have a dual band TC and the previous dual band EABS and I'm tearing my hair out trying to get these things to play nice! Maybe you can provide some assistance:
    1) The TC upstairs is connected to the comcast modem and is the main 'router' in my network. In addition, I'm using the "create wireless network" option on this router to set up both a 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz wireless environment.
    2) The AEBS downstairs on the opposite end of the house is connected by ethernet - whole house is wired so I'm feeding from the TC upstairs through a switch in the disti box down to an outlet where I have the AEBS. The cat-5 cable is connected to a LAN port on the back of the AEBS.
    3) I have the AEBS set up to extend the wireless network. When I do this it only gives me the ability to select one wireless network (I have the TC configured to call the 5 GHz network something different) - In essence doesn't appear to want to let me extend both bands of the wireless network.
The problem seems to be that once I get all the configurations set I have no connectivity and if I try to open the configuration via Airport Utility, its just a spinning gear and will never open to show the settings. This happens to with both the TC and the AEBS. It's like it's in a loop or something.
I immediately disconnect the AEBS from the network and suddenly all is well again.
I know this seems like a rant, but this has been kicking my a** for two days!! I've just about had it with the constant 'hard reset' of the routers and starting over with configuration. If you have any specific things I should do, or settings that are key to set up both devices to extend my wireless network throughout the house I would be so thankful!!
    Thanks,
    Don

  • How to Access time capsule backup data on Airport Extreme

    Hi All,
    Thank you in advance.
The Problem : One of our Mac Book Air was stolen and we have the MBA backed up on Airport Extreme.
Currently we don't have another MBA that can do a full restore. I just want to access the Airport Extreme Time Capsule Data and get few files that is in the backups.
I have been searching for a solution and still can't find a way to do this. It is just 1 set of files inside the backup.
Thank you again for all the help.

    Hi LaPastenague
I went over the pondini.org website, however still I can't access other users data T
I can go and review my own data.
The Data is backed up ( shared ) on Time Capsule ( which means all the users in the same house uses this one single time capsule to backup )
    http://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/
    ## We currently don't know what was the username or password the user was using.
I am also looking at the pondini.org and
"With Accounts:  this allows setting up separate accounts, each with its own password and folder.  You can set up accounts and passwords that correspond to the ones on your Mac (but passwords must be changed separately), and/or you can create different ones.  Each account may have permission to Read, or Read and Write, or Not allowed.  This is not recommended for use with Time Machine backups, as no single user can see everything on the disk(s).  That's especially important if there's a space problem -- you'd have to connect with each account in turn to see the whole picture.  The backups for each Mac are protected by the usual permissions anyway, so in most cases this option is overkill.  There are also a few minor differences in the content of some of the windows when selecting the backup destinations"
We are usuing this "With Accounts" settings

  • Airport Extreme works fine. Cannot see two Airport express units

Hello. I just bought a new Airport Extreme and 2 Airport express units to replace my old linksys routers and to take advantage of my new MacBook Pro and iTV units. I am a Mac newbie after 20 years of PC's. The Netgear DGND3300 DSL modem feeds DSL signal to the Airport Extreme unit and it works well with good internet and signal. I am trying to use the 2 Airport Express units to extend the signal around the house. The Airport Utility has seen both of them but then they disappear and it cant find them again. They are 10 feet away for now until I get them configured. How do I get them to connect and how do I configure them to extend the wifi range?
    Thank you.

The first thing to check is your AirPort Extreme.
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab/label below the row of icons
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Update to save changes
You may have already done this, but it was not mentioned in your post and is a critical step to "extend" the network.
"Hard Reset" each of the AirPort Express devices by holding in the reset button for 10-12 seconds. Then power down one device and configure one at a time.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab/label below the icons
Enter a name for the device, device password and adjust Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme wireless network
Check mark next to Allow Wireless Clients
Wireless Security = Same security setting as the AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme network
    Confirm Password
Update to save settings. Close AirPort Utility immediately as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored. You should have a green light on the Express in 40-45 seconds.
Now, log back on to the wireless network provided by the AirPort Extreme and you should see the AirPort Express that you just configured, if you are using a Mac. The Windows Firewall or anti-virus software may block the connection if you are using a PC. (The AirPort Express "disappears" as soon as you click Update in AirPort Utility because it has joined another network...that's why you don't see it. It uses a "temporary" network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxs during the configuration only).
Configure the second AirPort Express the same as the first. You will probably want to assign a different device name to that Express to keep things straight.
To "extend" effectively, the Express should be located approximately 1/2 the distance between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Depending on obstructions, you may need to alter this distance a bit.
The "extend" setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheel. The AirPort Extreme is the "hub" and each Express resides at the end of a "spoke". Each Express communicates directly to the "hub", not to another Express at the end of another spoke. For that reason, you cannot "extend" a device that is already configured to "extend".

  • New Airport Extreme works fine with everything except my husband's Toshiba running Windows 7

I have no idea how to fix this problem.  He scanned his computer (Windows 7) for viruses, and nothing came back.  He deleted our home network from his laptop, then added it back.
His computer shows that he has "limited access" to our home network and NO internet access.  It also shows he has four bars, so he has a good signal.  Four other people in the house using macs, ipods, ipads, and kindle fires aren't having an issues.
Is the problem with his laptop or with my new Airport Extreme?  We upgraded from a very old version (I think it was the 1st one), he never had a problem with the old Airport Extreme.  He actually didn't have a problem with the new one until about a week after I had it up, which makes me think the problem is with his computer?
His Toshiba has no problem connecting to his Verizon mifi.
Could someone please offer me some advice?

I think I may have solved my own problem.  I read somewhere online that he needs to hit his "F2" button.  He hit it and his computer hooked right up to our network.  Previously, we would have to restart Airport Extreme and his computer so he could connect.  Even doing that the connection would last between five minutes and two days.
Very strange.  Hopefully problem solved.  Time will tell.

  • Airport Extreme works fine with ibook and wireless PC on WPA, but not Wii

    Hi;
I just got an Airport Extreme last week. Took me a while to get everything figured out, but I got my ibook as well as my wife's ibook and her PC to connect wirelessly, using WPA encryption. We have a TiVo (using the "official" TiVo USB transceiver)and a Nintendo Wii that I can't get to connect though. Both see the network and try to connect, but after a connection attempt they come back with an error message that the network can't be found.
When I change to WEP encryption, the connections work just fine. I really want to stick with WPA, though, as there are a bunch of wireless networks around me and I obviously don't want anyone else to connect to my network. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks in advance.

At first we could plug the Dell in directly but that was before setting up the AX. Now that the AX works the Dell cannnot connect even wired. (It says that it's connected but it cannot find server when you try to open a webpage). Could this be a problem that the moden cannot go between Mac & windows?
Most modems tend to "remember" the last device connected to it, so it's important to do a complete power-down/power-up when switching devices. It's possible that your modem did this when you attempted to connect the PC directly. My purpose of having you connect the PC directly was to verify that it can access the Internet with a wired connection and that it's wireless setting needs to be troubleshot further.
The power recycle process should be something like the following:
    - Power-off the modem & AX; If possible, leave the modem off overnight.
    - Power-on the modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
