Time Capsule HDD

My Time Capsule no longer works, but I still need the data off the HDD, what enclosure should I buy for a 1TB Time Capsule HDD?

Add mine to the list. Just came this morning and it was dead. Bought it, guess what, 18 months ago.
I think we should all write Apple about this.
From what everyone wrote, we can say:
1. It is not related to Snow Leopard
2. It happens regularly at 15-18 months from time of use/purchase
3. Apple won´t do anything but sell you another
WHAT ABOUT THE DATA????? You buy these things in order to have a reliable equipment to store your data. Otherwise, it is just another super overpriced Airport Express/Extreme.
It is truly exasperating and dissapointing.

  • Access the Time Capsule HDD from g and an n network?

    Hi there
I reckon that this Time Capsule is great idea and I look forward to buying one.
I have a MacBook Pro (802.11n) and a Windows laptop (with a 802.11g adapter). I will plug a USB printer into the Time Capsule.
I want both my laptops to be able to access the Time Capsule HDD. I understand that if I want to maximise the connection speed for my MacBook I'll need to run seperate 802.11n network (for my MacBook) and a 802.11g network for my Windows laptop. Otherwise a shared b/g/n network will just run at g speed.
My question: If I do run the two seperate networks, will both laptops be able to share the HDD and printer?
Also, will the two laptops be able to see each other across the two networks?
    Thanks for your help.
    Cheers

You're right about the 802.11n PC Card for the Windows laptop.
Seeing as the 802.11n is still in draft, how will I know if the PC Card I purchase will work with the Time Capsule?
If is merely a case of getting any Belkin, NetGear etc. 802.11n PC Card for the laptop and assuming it'll work?
Is there a compatibility list somewhere?
I really appreciate your help on this one.
    Cheers!

  • Time Capsule HDD Mounting Question

    Hi all,
First time Mac owner (not user, just took a while to be able to afford one) and I'm loving it for the most part. I have a 2.6 Penryn 17" MBP and a 500 GB Time Capsule. It works great for automatically backing up when plugged in, wireless N routing, even as an external hard drive. Here's my q... Is the Time Capsule hard drive supposed to mount automatically when you join the network? Currently the only way I can access it is to go into a finder window and connect to it (it's listed in the left column, but not connected), and then it will pop the icon for the hard drive onto my desktop. I'd really like to be able to just double click the Time Capsule HDD on my desktop instead of having to mount it manually every time I want to use it as an external HDD. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thx,
    skorpien

  • Time Capsule HDD keeps cycling on and off while my Mac is sleeping

Hi guys, I'm in a bit of a hurry so just gonna post dot points:
    • My Time Capsule's HDD keeps cycling on and off continuously and potentially doing heaps of damage to it's drive when my MacBook is sleeping.
    • Time Machine is set to automatically backup to my time capsule.
    • As soon as I wake up and log into my MacBook it seems to stop. I checked the time capsule icon immediately and it says "Preparing backup" so I assume it was stuck in that phrase.
    • I assume it backs up normally after waking up
    MacBook Pro Retina:
    • I usually never put my MacBook to sleep by closing the screen, so can't say if this happens when it's in closed screen sleep vs open screened sleep
    • I'm not sure if there's any difference between close screen sleep and open screen sleep
    • It is set to go to sleep automatically after 45mins of inactivity
    • My iTunes Library is stored off-device on a 2TB HDD connected to the Time Capsule

How old is the TC and on what firmware?
You have put Mountain Lion for OS.. is that still the case or upgraded to Mavericks??
There has been some issues at various times with disk spinning up ..
This thread might give you some clues.

Is the computer set to power nap? Try turning that off.
Try unplugging the external drive with itunes library and see if that helps.
If it is TM the attempts to start the backup should be in the log.
    See A1 pondini troubleshooting.

Power nap.. try unplugging the laptop from power.

  • Time Capsule HDD replacement from 500GB to 2TB possible ?

    Hi,
does anyone know if it is possible to replace the 500GB HDD in my TC with the new 2TB HDD without having to buy a complete new TC ?
    Thanks

A USB hub (powered) will let you attach multiple devices.
ive notcied drives attached to the USB Port and accessing the Time Capsule wirelessly is slower than just wirelessly accessing the internal TC Drive.
Really? There shouldn't be a noticeable difference, if everything is connected securely and working properly.

  • Time Capsule HDD Upgrade A1355

Hi new to the forum so hello
As the title says im looking at upgrading the HDD in my time capsule as ive run out of space on the 1TB!
I belive its a 3rd generation (late 2009) model A1355, i was thinking about a 3TB upgrade but ive heard it could be maxing out the power supply so im quite happy to just go with a 2TB as the original 1TB has taken me 4 years to fill so hopefully it would last another 4 years!
My question is which HDD? Im from the uk and ive searched for compatable HDD's but with no luck as most of the HDD suggested in certain threads are now no longer availble!
Any help or advice is much appreciated
    Thanks

Showing my ignorance, Is HSGT western Digital?
These are hitachi drives.. hitachi was sold.. part to WD and part to Toshiba.. but they still sell drives under both their own name as well as Toshiba..
So the website now shows.. a wd company. http://www.hgst.com/
But the drives are Hitachi (and originally IBM, Ultrastar).
I disagree with Joe, not that these drives are not excellent.. I am sure they are.. and I am sure the heat is not the big issue it was to the drive.. but the heat will kill the TC stone dead.
Nor will the speed of 7200 rpm drives be of any use.. the TC is processor bound and so a green drive is the best still for them.
If you store files on the TC then as with any other file storage it must be backed up.. having the best drive in the world is still not a backup. Never ever leave files on a single point of failure.. because one day it will fail for sure. And the TC is not a NAS.. it has no means by which it can back itself up.. nor can TM backup a network drive.. so you will need a USB drive of equal size somewhere in the network.. or real file server/NAS somewhere to backup to, plus software that can handle it running on a computer.
I have looked at the start current of the 4TB ultrastar before.

2A on 12v and 1.2A on 5v exceeds the spec of the TC power supply.
    It is rated 12v 1A and 4.3A 5V
Not that the power supply will fail, it will simply dip the voltage but it can lead to long term supply failure or issues.

  • Time Capsule HDD is very slow

My new Time Capsule  Hard disk data transfer is very slow and taking lot of time to copy single item, I connected my time capsule thru an existing wireles network instead of creating a new network, pls suggest how can i make it fast to access data or copy data.

You are connected the wrong way..
Plug into the main router via ethernet with the TC in bridge mode.
Setup wireless to roaming with the current network.. ie same wireless name = SSID and same security settings.. wpa2 AES = WPA2 Personal and same password.
Or simply turn off wireless in the TC.. use ethernet for fast speeds.

  • Access Time Capsules HDD over the internet!?

Hi, I've done a search and was wondering if there is any method of connecting to Time Capsule over the Internet. There are some ways, but the setup seems pretty complicated.
Has anyone found an easy method of doing this?
    Thanks for the Help!
    Mike

You have to enable WAN sharing. Then you can access the drive by going to the "go" menu and "connect to server" then typing in: "apf://your external ip". Then punch in your password and you should be connected. For your PC connection you need to go to my computer, right click on it, and select map network drive and type in: "\\your external ip\your disk name". Let me know if it works.

  • Cannot access Time Capsule HDD

Ok so we just got a 500gb Time Capsule, It worked for a while then just kind of stopped. Now I have all this stuff on it and cant access it:(((((((( Is there a way to like target disk a Time Capsule?

Open the airport utility.. make sure you can see the TC and can see the disk and see file sharing is set correctly.
Note . .If you had the TC setup to join a wireless network. .or current do.. the ethernet ports no longer work.. Apple turn them off if you join a non apple wireless network.
Do a full factory reset and the TC should be placed back in router mode and disk access should be fine.
    Try it.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.

  • Accessing Time Capsule HDD

Has anyone else had the error message saying that access is denied to the time capsule hard drive from a computer?
If so, how did you resolve it and give access to the hard drive again?

Are you the person that configured the TC? You must include the password which is being set.

  • Time capsule hdd auto start up

How can I setup the HDdisk on the time capsule so that it automatically starts when my macbook air starts up to restarts?

Set up the drive.....named "Data" unless you have renamed it......as a Login Item.
System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items tab (next to the Password tab)
Click the + button at the bottom of the Login Items list and use the Finder interface to navigate to the location of "Data" and click to open the drive, then click Add at the lower right
The next time that your Mac starts up, "Data" will be mounted on your desktop.

  • Time machine backup from external hdd to time capsule

Is it possible to transfer an time machine backup from an external hdd to a time capsule? I have changed the original 2tb time capsule hdd to a 3tb hdd because of loud sounds from the 2tb hdd. Now i want to transfer the backup from the (now external) 2tb hdd to the new 3tb hdd which is now in the time capsule. Could anybody help me?

Yes, it should be easy.. just copy the sparsebundle from the old 2TB plugged into your computer to the TC.
This will take a few hours maybe a lot more if the drive is near full.. use ethernet.. do not even dream of using wireless.. Do not plug the 2TB into the TC USB.. that is super slow.. plugged into your computer with a FW hard disk holder would be the ideal.. but USB is ok.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
    Is it worth it??
Saving old backups.. or simply start again.. a clean fresh backup is much more efficient. Put the 2TB drive in a draw.. if you haven't needed any files on it in 6months from now.. wipe it.

  • Time Capsule 2TB, use as multi MAC backup and extra HDD partition question

    Hi,
I just purchased a 2TB Time Capsule. I have an intel imac and a PPC G4 laptop, both running Leopard. I don't care about having to start a new Time Machine backup and just discard the old individual ones. I just need to know if I am supposed to Partition the Time Capsule HDD to have one Time Machine volume for each computer and another partition to use for a network storage area.
I have not opened the box yet, but read the manual online with a whole bunch of other information, and I don't seem to find the answer to this situation.
Logically it just doesn't seem correct (or neat) to have just one 2TB lump of space and have it used for many variations.
    Thank-you in advance.
    Mike

Time Machine will automatically create a sparsebundle file on the Time Capsule for each computer that will look something like this:
    "nameofcomputerMACaddress.sparsebundle
The Time Capsule will appear in the Finder under the SHARED heading and you can click to open the Time Capsule Folder to reveal the sparsebundle files there.
By clicking the gear shaped icon at the top of the window, you can also "Add New Folder" and rename them as needed. You can create as many folders as you like.

  • How do I restore my Time Capsule?

When I got my Time Capsule, I was hoping to use it as both a back-up system and as an external drive. However, after using it, I found out that it will continue to back up until it has no more room. So, I'm looking to restore my TC back to factory settings so I can start over with some place-holder files in it that will prevent the back-ups from using all the memory. I can't find any info about it in the Time Machine menu or in the user book and the local genius bar didn't seem to know how either. Any ideas?

If by restore you mean erasing the disk and starting over, then go into AirPort Utility, Manual Setup, Disks, and select the Time Capsules HDD and erase it.

  • Set up VNC on time capsule behind uverse?

    Please Help....
I want to have the ability to VNC into my machine remotely. Along with a handful of other things I use, plex, back to my mac, remote access to the time capsule HDD,  ect. I had this all setup before perfectly with Time Warner using a dyndns.com account and my time capsule (worked flawlessly)
Unfortunately I am stuck using Uverse in my new apartment with a 2wire router/modem as it's my only ISP option.
I have a time capsule plugged into the 2wire (3801HVG) and the only way I can get VNC to work (port 5900) is to put my machine into DMZ mode and the time capsule in bride mode. I'm just afraid that this will be not very secure even with the software firewall turned on in my system prefs. With this setup my machine has the same public IP as the 2wire– essentially does not have a private ip. -"hello world here is my iMac!"
Although with this setup I went to canyouseeme.com and after testing various random ports it could only see me on 5900. Which is exactly what I want but I'm still worried about my iMac's ip being the same as my public ip.
I tried to port forward just the port I want to use in the settings for the 2wire (gateway.2wire.net) but it does not connect. Only if I put the machine in DMZ mode does it work.
I've tried so many different setups and spent hours digging through the interwebs and I just cannot seem to make it happen.
things I've tried / info you should know:
    1. disabling routing all together on the 2wire (not possible with my model I found out)
    2. tried separately putting both devices in DMZ mode (my machine, time capsule)
    3. forwarding ports on 2wire and time capsule
    4. time capsule in bridge mode, sharing a public ip, distributing a range of ip's
    5. I also have the wireless function of the 2wire router off
    6. I have tv through them as well
    7. I put in my own DNS servers from opendns.com
    8. called ATT and they attempted to open the ports for me which worked at first then I realized they put my machine in DMZ mode, then they transferred me to another company who wanted to charge me $150 for a week of support. (yuck)
Is there anyone out there that could point me in the right direction to the best way to set this up? Or is it safe having my public ip the same as my iMacs?
    Thanks in advance.
    -Eric

    BUMP!
Hello! Anyone out there have authoritative info on getting Back to My Mac working without opening DMZ using uverse 2wire router? Is opening DMZ  very risky even if you keep   appropriate firewalls  in place?
I agree Uverse were wanks for this: the tech who installed my system said it would work just as it was w prior service (ie BTMM working perfectly). Now, I discover I can't remotely login, and ATT tries to farm me off to some $150 tech service for what they should have done @ the outset.
