Time capsule hot/overheated

I am wondering if it is normal but my time capsule seems to be all the time very hot/overheated. Is this normal or should I be worried?

the TC tends to get warm. its case acts as a heat sink.

  • Time capsule hot.

I just got a time capsule a couple weeks ago. I noticed it is running pretty hot and want to cool it down as that makes me nervous that the power supply or something could die. Is this normal?
Knowing this now, I would like to get the warranty from apple as there seems to be a fair amount of ppl having the TC's die. But, I ordered it from Amazon, so does anyone know if I could still get the warranty or am I SOL since it wasn't purchased from Apple?
    thanks

    Is the TC brand new??
As stated as long as it is new it is covered by applecare.. but you cannot buy it for the TC .. it is covered as a computer peripheral. Up to 2years before the purchase of the applecare still covers the TC.
But try to keep it cool.. they do get hot during a long backup but should cool down a fair bit once the disk stops spinning.. make sure that is happening.. that the TC is going into disk spin down.. you can feel the vibration with your hand on it.
Using a laptop cooler.. sealed to the bottom but spaced so as to allow space for the air to move can help force air through the TC.. that will help make it last.

  • Time Capsule Hot & Constantly Spinning

    Hi everyone
I've searched through a few discussions on this issue but most of them seem over a year old and are talking about steps which may or may not be possible.
The issue I have is that my Time Capsule doesn't spin down anymore. Occasionally it does, but then starts up again a couple of minutes later. This has the effect of making the device itself very hot and being so noisy that I can't work.
In looking through the discussions there doesn't seem to be a consensus on why this happens. One of the solutions is to restore the default settings, but this doesn't always seem to be successful. Another solution is to downgrade software to 7.5. but I'm not offered this option when I go into Airport Utility. Nor is there an option to do a Manual Setup which other posters advice.
My TC is running 7.6.3 and I can see no way of changing that.
Maybe the thing is just dying on its feet.
If anyone has any suggestioins I'd appreciate hearing them. At the moment I keep unplugging it which sort of defeats the purpose of haivng it in the first place. I only use it for Time Machine backups.
    thanks
    WG

since downgrading to 7.5.2 the orange light is flashing to tell me that there are firmware updates available. Is there a way of stopping it flashing without updating the firmware?
Yes, Apple do want to bug you.
Open the preference in the airport utility.. from the top menu area.
    And you will get this.
Turn off Check for updates when opening the utility
    And
Turn off Check for update weekly.
It will still annoy you occasionally because it is Apple who want to run your life. But you can ignore that too if it isn't daily.

  • Time Capsule - Overheating

I received an alert from my Time Capsule that it was overheating. I immediately put a fan on it and it seemed to cool down rather quickly. My TC is placed on a desk with no obstructions of airflow...
As any one else experienced this? When I received the alert, the TC was extremely, extremely hot to the touch...
    very concerning...

I know this might seem very obvious and I do not want to sound condescending, but when Apple ship new products they are very good at covering all the ventilation ports up with plastic. When the MacBook came out many MacBooks overheated because the plastic over the vert ports was not obvious and in many cases did not get removed. It might be worth checking to make sure there is not plastic still installed over the vert ports.

  • Will the new 2TB time capsule run hot like the old one?

Could someone please tell me if the new 2TB time capsule that just came out will run hot like the old version? I have been thinking about getting the time capsule for quite some time, but I am concerning that it will get overheated to the point that all the data stored on it would be lost. I have seen several posts over the internet mentioning this problem. Please help. Thank you so much.

I just replaced my old TC with the new one. It took all night to transfer 149gb from my Imac to the new drive by wireless N. I took the old one to work and hooked it up in my office for a back up of a Mac Mini. At home we had 3 Mac's attached to the TC and it was always hot.I even found some sockets from an old socket set to raise it up so air could get under it to help cool it down a little. The new one is just warm with the same computers hooked up. The old one at work is also only warm to the touch with the one Mac hooked to it. I'm very happy with the new one and love the dual band.

  • How to connect a time capsule with an ATT Elevate Hot Spot

    Hi,
Need help connecting my time capsule to my ATT Elevate Hot Spot....since I have no ethernet connection.
    Thanks!

Not sure how much we can help on this, but as a test, if you turn off the wireless on your MacBook and connect it to the router using an Ethernet cable, you should be able to log onto the Internet.
If you can, you know the Ethernet connection is working, and it will be a simple matter to connect the Time Capsule to the router and get it set up.
If you cannot get an Internet connection when you connect the Mac directly to the router, then more troubleshooting will be required.

  • We traded our home internet service for a Sprint Hot Spot.  The hot spot does not have an ethernet port to connect through.  Can we connect our time capsule to the wireless hot spot?

Hello, we switched our home internet service from an ethernet modem to a wireless hot spot.
Do you know if there is a way to connect our time capsule to the hot spot?
Everything I read only suggests connecting through an ethernet cable.  I'm hoping there is a way to do this.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!!!

No you can't join a wireless hotspot with a Time Capsule directly via it's 'join' option (tried and failed - well to be exact it kinda works but the Time Capsule's ethernet ports no longer work).
What you can do is buy an airport express and use it's 'join' option to connect to the iPhone's hotspot. Then you connect the airport express via ethernet to the time capsule (in bridge-mode).
You can then connect your computers to the time capsule via ethernet or use it's wireless function to set up wireless network (with a different name to that of the hotspot) that your wifi stuff can connect to.

  • Macbook pro and time capsule run hot

How hot should the laptop be getting? It only does this intermittently and more so up by the speakers, and the speakers are not always running. The Time capsule is on all the time and is hot all the time. Not so hot as to melt the plastic etc but I was interested in the amount of heat these should be releasing. Any information would help to ease my mind. I am new to Apple products and clearly heat is not unusual for the PC world. Thank you Douglas

If you simply want a cooler Mac, download smcFanControl - this program lets you set a minimum speed for the fans. I set it to 2400 - 2000 is the standard minimum temp that the MacBook Pro sets, and IMO it's just not enough.
I live in a pretty hot country so the MacBook Pro would get too hot to touch frequently. smcFanControl allows you to set a few different profiles, so when you think your computer is too hot, you can just switch to another profile and set min fan speed to, say 3000 or 4000 RPM. It only really starts to make noise at 4000.
Apple obviously had to strike a balance between noise and heat, and IMO they allow the MBP to run too hot. It will eventually damage components. I lost a hard drive and I am pretty sure it was due to heat because I had left the MBP unattended and charging, and it just felt extremely hot to the touch. The next day, the hard disk was dead...

  • Time capsule on verizon hot spot

I live in an RV and have the Verizon hot spot and would like to set up the time capsule.  Is this possible and if so how?

It is probably not possible.. the TC needs an ethernet connection basically. Although you can join a network it is not without issues. Give it a go.
Go to the wireless setup page and hold down the option key then hit the various wireless options.
Join a wireless network.. and see what happens.. tell us the results.

  • Time Capsule Runs HOT (temperature)

Our Time Capsule is very warm to the touch. Is this normal? Thanks

Yes, that's the general concensus. Not only is there a hard disk within the Time Capsule, but the power converter is also housed within the unit. It should run warm to the touch, but not so hot that it hurts to rest your hand on it for an extended amount of time. It will run hotter when the hard disk is being accessed (for backup or otherwise). Some people have noticed that raising the TC from the surface of the desk will help with air circulation under the TC and help to reduce the temperature. I have mine rested on four stacks of five pennies each. You might want to try this if you feel it's running too hot.

  • Time Capsule very hot!!!

    Hello,
I have buyed a Time Capsule 2T... I've connected it and after a configuration, before starting the back up, Time Capsule is very hot...It's normal?
    Thanks.

    Hello Sir!
I have a little question to you. I use this type of way to comunicate, because I don't have your e-mail.
After installing the Mountain Lion I have had some problems with imessage, Face Time, Skype, and Quick Time.
They crashed full in start phase.
So I decided to do a clear instalation on the HD.
What do you say to the restore process from the Time Capsule?
Better to do a file transfer, or a normal Time Machine restore.
    Thank you for cooperation, greetings,

  • Hot Time Capsule

I have just installed a Time Capsule. It is working fine but am surprised by the heat it generates, is this safe. I noticed the machine in the Apple Store was also very hot. Why have Apple used such poor insulators in the construction of this device ie rubber base and plastic case?
    Tony

Whilst this is a great device, the heat issue concerns me. I have placed the device on a painted wooden shelf and the surface gets very hot. Not great for the shelf and I suspect I will see marking after not too long a period. Whilst the device looks great I think the Apple engineers need to rethink this one, there is too much heat radiating from all surfaces of the device....

  • Using a Time capsule with a hot spot device

Is there a way to us the time capsule with a mobile hot spot device so that the TC is the primary wireless router instead of the hot spot device?

Sorry, but this is not possible unless you have an adapter that will provide an Ethernet signal to the Time Capsule's WAN port.

  • HOWTO: Connect Alien Wireless Hot Spot To Time Capsule/Airport

I switched over to a wireless device as my ISP, as my local Cable company boosted the bill 50%, and there is no DSL or any other service.  A nice '10GB' plan.  I should be able to eck by on that.
Naturally, my little 4G 'Hot Spot' works great with a computer or two connected to it wirelessly.  But there are no ethernet ports, and it basically 'blocks' when a Time Machine backup goes through it to the Time Capsule, when that connects to it.  Its little CPU is too busy with that backup to respond to other requests.  It's itty bitty humming bird heart can't take it.  Sigh.
After discovering that Apple does not allow one to bridge (aka 'extend') a wireless network unless it supports 'WDS' was an annoyance.  Naturally the little pocket-sized hot spot box doesn't support 'WDS'.  The point where I discovered that Apple's firmware DISABLES the switched ethernet ports when it connected to an existing wireless network was especially annoying.
After a little brainstorming and searching around I determined that THERE IS A WAY!:  Old School!
Various manufacturers make a device called a 'Wireless Ethernet Bridge'.  What this is intended for is ethernet peripherals like game consoles or printers or computers that don't have a wireless connection.  It connects to the wireless network FOR an ethernet wired device that can't.  Even ones that can't because the manufacturer is being an [expletive deleted].
So, basically jump through the hoops required to configure your bridge to connect to your wireless network, whatever it may be, plug it into the 'WAN' port of the Airport/Time Capsule router, and set the time capsule/airport to 'Bridge' the connection.
    Green light!
I posted the gruesome details on this site...

Looks like i'm having the same problem too...I'm unable to configure my new 2TB Time Capsule to my Etisalat elife connection at home!
I have connected the cable from modem on the wall directly to TC..able to set up the TC but wifi doesnt work!
clueless who to ask or call....can someone help?
    thanks in advance

  • Time capsule overheated

I think my time capsule died overnight.  I think it over heated.  The light was not on and I tried to restart it and got the yellow light for a second then nothing.  Is there a way to get the information out of it and on to a new time capsule?

What model TC.. A1xxx from the bottom label please??
If it is 3 years or more.. then the power supply has been slowly cooking over the lifespan of the TC but getting worse and worse as components deterioriate.
Pull out the hard disk.. stick it in a holder, USB to SATA type and plug into the computer.
    See http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
If you want .. since you are opening the TC.. get a new power supply via ebay.. apple do not sell spares but they are available in small numbers.. just search "time capsule power supply" they will pop up, and check international for cheaper ones from china.
