Time Capsule: How can one limit size of Time Machine Backup?

So there appears to be no easy way of partitioning the hard drive in Time Capsule. If this is so how does one limit the size of the Time Machine backups folders?
I want to use the hard drive to act as a normal storage device for various files but I understand that Time Machine will keep on increasing the size of the backups folder until it eventually runs out of space on the hard drive partition. Since one cannot re-partition the hard drive how can Time Machine be allotted only a specific portion of the hard drive? I don't want the hard drive to be filled with Time Machine backup folders.

Thanks BSP. Yes I am aware of the ability to limit the folders that TM backs up. I use this capability, But that certainly is not the solution I want.
I have not bought Time Capsule and probably will not buy it unless Apple fix this 'problem' and make the hard drive in TC behave like any other hard drive.
Why is it that Apple comes up with innovative designs which are let down by being 'crippled' in some way? Apple TV is another good example; can you steam from DVD Player? No. Can one steam a presentation directly from Keynote? No. With a little more thought Apple's products would be great. But, alas, this is not the case.

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary?  How do I do this if so?
I have attached the screen shots of all the settings.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • I'm sorry for repeating this, but i have not found a clear answer. i have a macbook wit iTunes library, an iMac, and a time capsule. how can i transfer my itunes library from TC backup to the iMac? thank you -

i'm sorry for repeating this, but i have not found a clear, step-by-step answer in several hours.
i have a macbook with iTunes library, a new iMac, and a new time capsule. how can i transfer my itunes library from TC backup to the iMac?
(sharing the iTunes library between the macbook & iMack requires both machines and seems silly ...)
    thank you -

    No.

I have a new Macbook pro and can't recall the password I used with my Time capsule - How can I (ideally) retrieve or possibly change the time capsule password?

Remember security on a TC is an illusion.
Simply press the reset button for 1-2 sec.. you must not do too long .. it will then hard reset.. but soft reset will revert all passwords to default for 5min. ie TC password is now public.
Remember this the next time because anybody at all can change your passwords.
Once into the TC you can then open the view passwords if you wanted any weaker security. Click and open the TC.. and click on edit.. then go to the top menu..
Voila .. all your passwords in plain sight to any Tom Dick and Fred.

  • How can i limit size of incoming emails

    Hi
Since creating Gmail mailbox on Iphone my data usage has increased dramatically.   Is there a away of limiting the size of initial download to phone, then bringing down rest of message/attachment on demand?

There is no such option/setting on an iPhone. Whether you can view the attachment has more to do with your connection, WiFi or cellular, and the size of the attachment or the overall size of all attachments if more than one attachment, than anything else. There will be a paperclip indicating the message includes an attachment regardless if downloaded with the message or not. When connected to the cellular network, if an attachment is below a designated size the attachment will be downloaded automatically. If over a certain size, you must select the attached file icon in the body of the message to download the attachment. The size limit varies by carrier/provider.

  • How can I limit the run time of my VI so that it starts when the arrow is clicked, and stops automatically when a specified time has elapsed using Labview 7?

I can't seem to find the proper tools to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing that you're running something in a While loop, so you should be able to stop whenever you want.
In LabVIEW 7, there is a new Express VI on the Time & Dialg palette named Elapsed Time. You specify the time you want, and it generates a boolean True after that amount of time has passed. Just connect this boolean to the Wile loops conditional terminal, either directly or "OR" it with a stop button so you can stop it yourself if needed.

Using the Abort button to stop your VI is like using a tree to stop your car. It works, but there may be consequences.

  • How can i exclude my macbook backup on time capsule from other imac connected to same time capsule?

we have several mac connected to same time capsule, how can i exclude one macbook backup from all the others mac accessing same time capsule?
    thanks

Not exactly clear what you mean.. the TC will keep each Mac backup in its own sparsebundle.. it does this automagically.. The backups are not mixed.. all are kept separate.
Or is this a security question.. you don't want people looking at the contents of the backup?
You can increase the security of the TC.. but it is too late.. you should have done it when first installed. If you go to the setup you can change security (Secure Shared Disks) by selecting with Accounts.. the problem is you will lose access to all the existing backups. You really need to do a clean start.. create accounts for all the users and start again.
Also note security is not a big feature here.. anybody with physical access to the TC can press the reset for 1sec and get access. It is a home device not a business device.

  • Hi, how can I limit the number of emails I can see on my iPhone 5. Every time in delete one and older email gets added from my live.co.uk account (where I want to keep my 2500 emails) I just don't want many on my phone. Thanks

You can't. Why on earth would you attempt to manage 2500 emails with setting up a folder structure or some means of doing so? Simply keeping them in an single inbox is not realistic, no matter what email client you use.

  • 180 GB of my 639-GB Macintosh hard drive is used. 320 GB of my 498-GB Tie Capsule is used. Only one backup ("now") exists for the Time Capsule, which can no longer backup because of "insufficient space". How come? What is wrong?"

Thank you William for your most helpful response. I shall deal first with your three comments:
Not being tech savvy, I would not have been able to make that call myself but it sure makes sense.
I have updated my profiles as you suggest.  Excellent tip.
This guidance is good.  Being new to Apple Support Communities, I did not find the field a labeling and guidance to be clear, a point you make.  Now I know, I shall do as you say and will use the small slim box as a header to the full message/question, which will place in the larger box below.
Secondly, I come to your question: Did anything change on your Mac recently, such as replacing the disk or main logic board?
The answer is “yes”.  Two events have happened both of which concerned the Time Capsule:
The telephone company, with which I have access to the Internet and I have my email account, installed a new modum.  After the technician left I had to try and get the Time Capsule and WiFi working again which ended with my having to call Apple for technical assistance.  The Apple technician walked me through a number of procedural steps which effectively re-set up the Time Capsule.
Access to the Internet failed and the telephone company reset the modum.  I had to call Apple again.  This time the technician did not reset the Time Capsule but walked me through a number of steps tha included renaming the “site”  (not the Time Capsule).
Another piece of information that may be relevant is that the MacBook Pro uses the Time Capsule for backup.  Everything appears to be in order.  When I enter the Time Capsule for this laptop I have backups going back for a long time.
Also, I do a weekly backup of the two computers onto another external hard drive using the Time Machine software.  So I have another backup of both computers.

  • HT201250 How can one Time Capsule be backed up backup to another?

My Macbook pro with 160GB hard drive is almost full, and so is is my 1TB time capsule (on which I backup for 5 macs in my family). I have just bought a 3TB Time Capsule now for all backups. My question: how can I use the old time capsule for my Macbook data to free up space on my hard drive and backup my data to the new Time Capsule?

Usually not a good idea.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #20.
and backup my data to the new Time Capsule?
Just start fresh.  You can always view and restore from the old ones via the Browse Other Backup Disks option, per #17 in the FAQ.

  • I used Migration Assistant to copy data to an new MacBook Pro from an old via my Time Capsule. When asked if to inherit time machine history on the new Mac, I mistakenly said no. How do I go back one step to say yes?

There isn't enough space on the Time Capsule to create a separate backup of the data on the new MacBook. And I am reluctant to delete old backups of the old MacBook to create space to backup the new machine. This occurred about 3 weeks ago so the data on the two machines are now out of sync. If I start over by formatting the new MacBook and rerunning Migration Assistant to pull data from the Time Capsule, how do i preserve the last 3 weeks of data on the new MacBook, considering that I didn't keep track of which files changed in the last 3 weeks?

All the rest of the stuff is where it should be.  As best I can tell. I have been going through my programs one at a time to see what works.  With the change in the OS (Launchpad? What the heck?) I am finding a significant number of my old programs are not working. Some I have found upgrades.  But without a working mail program, the machine is pretty useless for work.
The Apple techies had me run through 3 hours of 'stuff' (holding down keys and restarting, etc, etc).  It still does not launch. I think we are waiting for a 'miracle', but I need to know now if they should just come get this piece of junk or if they really are able to find a solution in a timely manner.

  • How can I replace an old time capsule

Will I lose all my data if I replace my original Time Capsule with the latest model?
    ALSO
I just bought a wireles printer. Is it necessary to hook it up to Time Capsule to share printing through out my house on multiple devices?

My TC is one of the first ever built. I am pretty sure it doesn't work for backing things up. It does do a good job as a router though. I was wondering if I should just continue with it as a router and use an online storage company? I really haven't a clue how to test it to see if it is indeed working. When I hit backup it says it is running but I have no confidence it is. If I enter Time Machine I see 1 years worth of stuff on my computer. Is that Time Capsule that allows me to see that? Or is it Time Machine? What is the difference anyway? Thanks for your reply abiout the printer. You made it very understandable
The TC always works, and has worked, for backing things up. They all have network attached storage in them. Time Machine is the software which backs up OS X, not a backup destination. The 1 year's worth of stuff is probably on your TC. To check, look where it says "shared" in the Finder and look for a picture of a TC, this is your Time Capsule which can be accessed from the Finder.
You could use an online storage company but backups will be very slow and space is limited, also it will end up more expensive than a new TC. Basically, I'd recommend a new TC (maybe the 2TB).

  • How does one replace a lost Time Capsule power cord? thanks

how does one replace a lost Time Capsule power cord? thanks

It is a standard figure8 power cable.. any electronic retailer will stock them.
You will find it hard to get white.. they are all black.. you can ask at apple store or repairer.. I don't think it is sold as an accessory.. but a repair shop might have a few.
