Time Capsule in a Dual Band Network using Airport Extreme (N) and (2) AE

I need help and step by step directions to configure my TC in a Dual Band Network. Currently, I have my TC set up in a Create Network mode using 5Mhz and my AE (n) set up to establish a WDS and my AE (2) set up as WDS.
Everything works but my AE constantly blinks amber and I can't use my TC as a backup drive on anything but my Macbook and iMac. My 2 powerbooks (G4) can't back up to the TC. I am using Leopard 10.5.2 and airport utility 5.3.1.
I use one of my AEs to connect a vista pc to my network by ethernet (it works) and the other AE in my family room to connect to my Toshiba HD DVD by ethernet (it works).
Please help I must be missing something otherwise my AE wouldn't be blinking.

double click the blinking one in the utility and see if it tells you why its amber...WDS error?

Time Capsule connectivity drops on extended network with Airport Extreme

I have a new Airport Extreme router as the main router in my network and a Time Capsule set to extend the 2.4Ghz network. The routers must be configured in this order because I want the 5Ghz network from the Extreme to cover my main seating area.
The problem I have is that while I'm connected to the Extreme, on either the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz network, the connection to the Time Capsule will 'drop'. The network drive within the Time Capsule will no longer be available and the AirPort Utility no longer shows the Time Capsule. If I reboot the Extreme, the Time Capsule will reappear.
Also, when the connection drops, if I were to move within the primary range of the Time Capsult and connect to the 2.4Ghz network, it will connect flawlessly and I would have access to the Time Capsule and it's resources. It is only access through to the Time Capsule through the Extreme that is no longer available.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Both routers work flawlessly otherwise. I'm fairly certain there isn't a hardware problem here. I've gone through all the configuration settings multiple times and can't find anything that could affect this. I have the latest firmware for both routers and the latest AirPort utility.
One thing to note is that the Time Capsule is a North American unit, while the Extreme is from Hong Kong. I know there are slight differences regarding the wireless channels that both can use, but I don't think this is an issue since the Time Capsule maintains proper internet connectivity the whole time. If it was a channel issue, I'd expect the Time Capsule to lose internet access when this issue arrises.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I also have this problem -- it started about 2 weeks ago (around July 20?), possibly at the time the new Airport Extreme firmware went into effect. I have two separate Mac laptops that each use Time Machine to back up to different disks that are attached to the Airport Extreme (i.e., each laptop has its own backup-destination disk). Both were working flawlessly before (for more than 6 months); now, each one reliably drops the connection to the disk (produces an error message, and thereafter cannot re-connect to the destination disk until I cycle the Airport Extreme with power-off/on). I had hoped that 10.5.8 would help (the release notes talked about improved stability with Airport connections), but not so.

Setting up time capsule on a secure subnet of an airport extreme

I've currently got an airport extreme and a time capsule. I'd like to set up the time capsule on a secure subnet of the airport extreme. e.g.:
Modem -> Airport Extreme (WPA 2 enabled) -via ethernet> Time Capsule (separate subnet invisible to Airport Extreme users)
I have a group of housemates that need to access the network over the airport extreme, but I don't want to open up my backups on the Time Capsule to network attack.
Any reccomendations would be welcome.

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the picture of the AirPort Extreme
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window that appears
Edit/backspace out the Wireless Network Name and type in a new name that you want to use
Click Update at the lower right of the window
Wait a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart
Close AirPort Utility
The new network that you named will use the same network password that you set up originally.

Dual band network using Mini as 11g base station to send airtunes to AX?

Here's what I'm trying to do: set up a dual band network, pretty much exactly as described in Apple's doc (with the AEn as the router, in 5ghz 11n-only mode and accessed by a CD2 MBP with 11n enabled ), but using a Mac Mini as an 11g software base station (via Internet Sharing) to connect a AX via 11g so I can stream music to my stereo via Airtunes. I've got the Mini seeing the AX, and iTunes on the Mini sees the AX for Airtunes, but the CD2 MBP does NOT see the AX, either in iTunes or with Airport Utility. I'm currently messing around with IPNetRouterX in order to get the Mini to bridge it's ethernet connection from the AEn to it's Airport port, but no succes so far. Any Ideas?

The problem is that the Mac mini is creating a different subnet for the AirPort connection. Therefore the MacBook Pro's Ethernet connection to the Mac mini can't reach the AX.

Extending an extreme dual band network using an old Express (802.11g)s

Previously I had a 802.11g home network based on two Airport Express (old version) in WDS mode.
I've installed a new Airport extreme station in order to have a dual-band network to use 802.11g/n without loosing performance and hoping to cover my area with the enhanced power.
Unfortunately there are still some corners with insufficient signal so i tried to extend the 802.11g segment with the old airport, checking the extreme flag to allow the network to be expanded and manually configuring the express WDS page.
I payed attention to the channel (the same in extreme and express station) and configured the airport ID of the extreme base station in the express remote station.

When using WDS you automatically reduce the efficiency of the Airport Extreme's 802.11n extended features. WDS requires that the network drops to 802.11g instead of 802.11n which boasts the extended network range.
There isn't much more you could do for network range other than changing the channel to remove wireless interference or move the Airport Expresses closer to the areas of low signal (internet speed will be reduced the farther the Expresses are from the main base.)

You need to configure your new unit to participate in a WDS network. You can't see that option unless you hold down an "option" key when you pull down the "Wireless Mode" list.
Depending on what other equipment you have, you might want to configure your Extreme to create a separate 5 GHz band. That's under the "Wireless Network Options" button on the same panel as the "Wireless Mode" list.

How to rename my network; using Airport Extreme

I would like to rename my wireless network and guest network. I am using Airport Extreme, and have extended the network using an Airport Express. Can someone tell me how to rename these, and what problems I might run into when I try to use Wi-Fi devices after I've done that?

You would use AirPort Utility to change the name of your wireless network. It will be relatively easy to change the name on the AirPort Extreme...4-5 clicks and Update
In order to change the name on the Express, you'll need to "hard reset" it and reconfigure it. Not too difficult if you have done this before.
If you change the name of the wireless network, you will need to enter the password to connect to the network the first time that you log on with any of your devices. If you have them set to "remember" the network, you won't have to enter the password again unless you make another change to the network name or password.
Post back if you need some steps to change the wireless network name on your devices.

Can't Connect to Internet using AirPort Extreme Card and DLink Router

I have tried just about everything, but I can't seem to connect my MAC OS X 10.3.9 to the internet. I am using the Airport Extreme Card and no networks show up. I am trying to connect to my DLink router. I was told by DLink that it is compatible with AirPort Extreme cards, but the guys at Best Buy were unable to connect to their wireless routers, other than their Mac Router. Please let me know if you have a solution! Thanks

Extending a simultaneous dual-band network using an Airport Extreme

I have a new Time Capsule that can operate in simultaneous dual-band mode. I have a single SSID for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, and all of my devices correctly connect using the appropriate frequency.
I also have an older square Airport Extreme that's dual-band capable (but not simultaneous dual-band). I have this Airport Extreme set up to extend the network from the Time Capsule, but it's extending the 5 GHz network rather than the 2.4 GHz network. I'd rather have it extend the 2.4 GHz network because our iPhones move around the house much more often than our other wireless clients.
I know that I could go back to having different SSIDs for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, and then telling the Airport Extreme explicitly to extend the 2.4 GHz network, but I'm really enjoying having a single SSID that any device can use to connect to my network.

Thanks for the replies. Right now, there's about 30 feet, two interior plaster/lathe walls and a closet between the Time Capsule and the Airport Extreme. The area of the house where I'm trying to improve the 2.4 GHz reception (an attached studio) is only about another 18 feet, one interior wall and one exterior wall further past the Airport Extreme's current location. I can't put the Airport Extreme any further from the Time Capsule because the 18 feet between its current location and the attached studio is an open area.
If there are no hidden settings that I'm missing, I guess I'll just break the network back into two discrete SSIDs and explicitly tell the Airport Extreme to extend the 2.4 GHz network.

Hi I am hoping to add my 2 TB time capsule to my existing wireless network using cisco dpq 3925 modem. I have two mbp one running Yosemite and the other os 10.7.5

I have a time capsule 2TB model 1409. I would like to connect it to my existing wireless network (using a cisco DPQ 3925 modem). I have two mac book pro one running Yosemite and the other OS 10.7.5. The best I can do is to connect the TC to the Modem via ethernet. Have one of my MBP connect to the time capsule using a ethernet cable and have the TB set to bridge mode. In this configuration, both mbp and the iPad can detect the TC but when I try to connect it to the wireless network, using the same network name and password, the light flashes amber and I cannot detect the time capsule again.

The best I can do is to connect the TC to the Modem via ethernet.
The TC does not connect to non-apple routers by wireless.. well. It is possible but so poor a method that Apple seem to have eliminated it in the setup wizard.. I would take that as a good thing..
If you cannot use ethernet you have two choices..
Use another apple router that is plugged into the Cable modem.. eg a second hand Extreme Gen5 or the latest Express.. the Extreme is both cheaper and better.
Or you can use a set of EOP (homeplug) adapters.. but they cannot be guaranteed to work so you should buy from a place that allows returns.

Upgrade time capsule to new dual band - copy backups?

I am buying one of the new 1TB dual-band Time Capsules. I have the original Time Capsule right now, which contains my laptop backups. How do I move my backup files from the old Time Capsule to the new? I've searched here and found suggestions to backup the Time Capsule to an external hard drive, then transfer those files onto the new Time Capsule, but that seems cumbersome. Is there a more direct way?

How'd that work out for you? Sorry, I can't help. I'm just found your post while browsing my own Time Capsule questions, and I don't even have a Mac yet (expecting delivery by the 3rd of June). I'm actually wondering should I even get a TC since it only contains the same size drive as my Mac. I do like an elegant solution, and I like the idea of having only one cord (power) attached to the computer. But I'd like a 1.5 or 2.0 terabyte backup system. Anyway, that's not your problem, and your question is a good one. I'm surprised that you had to answer it yourself!

Need to backup Time Capsule, (3rd Gen) 7.6.1 used as wireless router and network drive

I use Time Capsule, 802.11n (3rd Gen) 7.6.1 (1Tb) as a wireless router and a network drive. I do not use Time Machine at all. How do I create a backup of the files housed on the Time Capsule to an external drive?
Also, why does the use of Time Capsule as a network drive seem to be such an usual configuration? The configuration makes sense to me, aside from the inability to automatically back up the Time Capsule itself to a cloud or other drive, which, to me, is what really makes no sense at all. Is there something else I should be using? I'm not too familiar with the wisest way to set up a home network. I just know I like to wirelessly have access to my files from multiple computers within my household as opposed to saving files on any one computer locally.

You could connect a USB hard-drive to the USB port on the TimeCapsule and Enable Disk Sharing on both the TC's Built in Drive as well as the USB connected one.
Then these drives can be mounted using finder and files copied between them as needed.
The main advantage of time-machine is - automation(like you mentioned) + to be able to go back in time - i.e. ability to restore files from a certain date/time. Multiple versions are available for restore.
Also in Mountain Lion - You can restore your mac from a time machine backup very easily - it is one of the options when you boot to the Recovery Partition (ditto when you boot ML from DVD/USB)

Dual band network using non-apple Wirless G router (dlink or linksys)?

I now have a pure 5GHz N network with 2 Extreme base stations, Mac Pro and Macbook on it, but want to make another 2.4GHz b/g network (to preserve the speed of 5 GHz N).
I currently have the b/g working using the Airport Express as a bridge but its range is limited compared to other g routers I have (with external boosted antennae), plus it was an additional expense.
Any clues as to how to use a 3rd party router like a dlink DI-624 or Linksys WTR54G? I tried hooking them to the Airport Extreme's LAN port to the Dlink WAN port w/ DHCP. It will share the internet connection but won't access the local network (since it is on a different subnet eg 192.168.0.1 on dlink vs 192.168.1.x on Airport).
I can't get the Dlink router to use the same subnet as the extreme. Suggestions?

To help others, I've explicitly documented the steps I took with my Dlink DI-624. Here are the steps I did:
1. Reset to factory settings with the pin button on back.
2. Connect dLink WAN port to one of the Airport Extreme's LAN ports
3. Confirm I can connect via 802.11g using my Macbook (choosing the 'dlink' SSID)
4. Type 192.168.0.1 to get to the dlinks' admin pages
5. Change the dlink's admin password, Apply
6. Change the network SSID and set the wireless mode (b/g or g only, etc), choose the encryption level (WPA2) and set the password, Apply
7. Wait for the router to reboot. Now, on the Macbook choose the new SSID above and enter the password
8. Log in again to 192.168.0.1 - this time you'll need the password set for the router in step 5
9. Now, set the dlink's DHCP server to Disabled. Apply and let the router reboot.
10. Move the ethernet connection from the dlink WAN port to one of its LAN ports
11. Choose the new SSID and voila: full internet access and local LAN access (confirm you're now on the same subnet and can see local network resources).

2TB Time Capsule or External Hard Drive for use with Mac MINI and AppleTV

My current setup is I have a 1TB Hard Drive linked to my intel Mac Mini via FireWire 400, the Mini shares my music and films through iTunes so that my AppleTV can pick them up.
All devices are connected to an AEBS 802.11n (early model) via Cat6 Gigabit cables.
As I have run out of space and am looking for a bigger drive, I wanted to know if I would be able to use the 2TB Time Capsule to hold my films and be able to stream them to the Mac Mini so that it may stream them through iTunes to the AppleTV.
The theory of if should work, as the devices are all Gigabit capable and connected by high quality Cat6 leads their shouldn't be network bandwith issues, I am just unsure of how quickly the TimeCapsule can read stored data from a hard drive and transmit, some of my films are HD and run 4GB plus.
The obvious answers is just to buy a bigger hard drive with FW400, however I would like to reduce the number of boxes I have under the TV, I plan to upgrade my AEBS to the latest one anyway so just thought it made sense to explore this option.

It should work in theory, but the disk access time of the TC is much slower. I was setup like you are with an external drive connected to a Mini via FW and I had true Gigabit transfer between computers.
When my hard drive failed I sold my Linksys gigabit router and bought a TC to reduce the number of boxes, but I soon learned that the read/write speed on a TC is a little bit faster than on a thumb drive! Not that great. All my machines are also connected with Cat6.
It's still OK to watch a movie though, but transferring 10+ Gb is a pain.
