Time Capsule in Vancouver, BC, Canada

This is getting ridiculous. I'm living in Vancouver, Canada and I still can't get a time capsule. We have no Apple Store, so we have to rely on Futureshop and Best Buy. They still have none 1 month after the US release.
I feel like living in **** south pole, but only about 100 miles away from the border. This is ridiculous.
Apple, you have to do something about Canada. No iPhone, no Time Capsule, I'm about to just change all my setting, throw my Macbook Pro, my Mac Pro, my apple tv and replace it for PCs. At least I won't have to wait forever to spend my money and get geek tools.
C'mon, it's totally ridiculous. I think it's time to wake up and take care of the 30 millions canadians up there.

Wait just a tad little longer. Apple Store is coming to Vancouver and will be located at Pacific Centre mall in downtown. I'm looking forward to visiting the store. My sister works in downtown and she often likes to browse the two major Mac stores there. I think she'll enjoy a visit at a proper Apple store. They are quite an experience offering lectures, demonstrations and all sorts of fun things for people to browse.

  • Time Capsule will not connect to internet through Bell (Canada) router

Help! I cannot be connected to my Time Capusle and still use the interenet! I have a 1st generation Time Capsule and the router supplied by Bell Canada is a 2Wire Gateway. When I first purchased the Time Capsule, the same thing was happening. Internet would work when connected to Bell router but not when trying to go through Time Capsule. I called Apple and was able to recieve telephone support which fixed the problem. That was close to 2 year ago and never had a problem until now. Internet works fine when connecting to only Bell router, Time Machine works fine when computer is connected to Time Capsule.
The only problem is I can't use the interent when connected to Time Capsule (like before).  I have tried everything hard wired and wireless. I have tried hard resets.  I went to call Apple again but found out it was going to cost me something like $60.

You must bridge the TC.. is the TC in bridge mode.. ??
What OS is running  on the comptuer?
In v5 utility go to manual setup.. internet connection.. connection sharing.. off bridge mode.
In v6 utility go to DHCP and NAT page.. select router mode off bridge mode.
Once in bridge the TC should work.. remember the gen1 TC is now at least 1year past its die date.. it will become less and less reliable as time goes on.. no matter what you do.

  • Time Capsule hard drive failure

    Hello, all
I have a 500 GB Time Capsule that is about four years old. I use it to back up my MacBook Air and I also use it for file storage. Recently the HD has become erratic, in that it appears on Finder under Shared sometimes but not always. The wireless router part is still working fine. I can usually get the HD to reappear but it disappears again eventually. I can get it back by unplugging and replugging the TC, but I tried a hard reset and that didn't bring it back. I have backed up all the files I had stored on there as advised by the Apple Store Genius (see next paragraph).
I took it to the Apple Store and the Genius said that he thinks it is failing. He was not able to see the TC/HD wirelessly but was able to access it by plugging in a cable. He expressed surprise that my TC has lasted four years!!! He said I should replace it.
I then went to the online Apple Store and read the TC reviews, which contained quite a few reviews that report HD failure (mostly power failure, if I'm not mistaken) after 18 months or so! Some suggested that a good solution would be to get an Airport Extreme plus a USB hard drive of some other brand, not Apple. Many of these report power failure, which is not my problem. I still have power; apparently hard drive failure.
This sounded like a good idea, so today I went to London Drugs in Vancouver (an Apple retailer) and the salesman there (should be fairly unbiased) thought I should get a new TC rather than the two-piece solution just because it was simpler. He also said that in fact there about three HD manufacturers who produce all hard drives and that any one would have about the same frequency of failure, Apple include because they don't manufacture their own.
So I'm ready to replace my old TC with the new one I bought, but I'd like to get any suggestions the community might have. I can see the advantage of the TC because it's an all-in-one. I haven't opened it yet, so I'll await your well-informed input.
    Thanks so much!

I think the TC is a much better buy.. If only for this reason.. the USB hard disk on the AEBS is dog slow.. whereas the TC internal drive is at least same as standard single disk NAS.. overall for what you get the price of a 2TB TC vs the 2TB USB disk plus AEBS is about right.. the 3TB TC is much poorer value.
    Read the review.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
It is fairly well done, but not everything is correct.. the stuff about the fan turning on is wrong.. it has the same issue as the old one. That is overheating, no ventilation and the fan does not turn on, has no outside vent anyway.
But look at the internal vs usb speed of hdd.. that should convince you of the value of the TC.. if you are using anything but wireless.
BTW the issue with the Gen 1 is still more likely to be the power supply.. The original 500GB hard disk was a Seagate Server ES drive.. the only server standard drive in the whole TC series although it was always promoted as having server standard drives..
IMHO a repair of the power supply would get it up and running again. Very extermely unlikely that drive will die in such a manner.. even if it was to go bad they  tend to stay bad.. not come on again when you power cycle.. but power supplies sure do.
I have repaired dozens of them.. haven't ever come across a dead 500GB drive yet.. seen a few 1TB, both WD and noisy hitachi.. but even so not that many..
Lots and zillions of dead power supplies though.

At least you can pull open the TC and remove the hard disk and wipe it.
Interesting the Apple guys are surprised at the 4year life span.. obviously intended for you to buy a new one much sooner than that.

  • Why does Time Capsule hate older Macs running Tiger??

Time Capsule has ruined my network and my bloody Saturday!
I have never had this much trouble with an Apple product (at least since OS 8)...and I just waited on hold for over 64 minutes and then got disconnected. Sorry if this is jumbled, but it's been one lousy day!!
I got my Time Capsule, and I was looking forward to setting it up for backup once I got past the "easy" part of the router setup...uh huh...easy...for my new iMac (running 10.5.2) , no prob. For my 2002 Power Mac running 10.4.11 and an original AirPort card, another story. Just as well that my old PowerBook G4 is still at work.
After some struggles, I gave up setting up the more secure WPA password for the G4 and reverted to a far less secure WEP password. At least that way I could get the G4 connected wirelessly.
If I want to access drives connected to my G4 from the iMac, no problems; I can also see the Time Capsule drive from the G4; however I cannot for the life of me get the G4 to successfully mount the iMac (which was no problem before I switched routers).
I was using a dLink router (which I gave away because I thought I wouldn't need it anymore), and getting online wirelessly while connecting my iMac to the old Power Mac G4 via Gigabit Ethernet for file sharing on occasion. When I first set up the Time Capsule, I tried to keep the ethernet cable connected directly between the two machines (as I had successfully with the dlink). While the iMac could mount the G4 readily, the G4, despite seeing the iMac, couldn't. Even in iChat using Bonjour, the G4 could receive messages and send messages back to the iMac (in an established chatroom), but it would always fail if I tried to send a "private" message...
sigh I just tried again...I always just had 169.1.1.2 and 169.1.1.3 as manual IP's for my ethernet connection, while mainintaining wireless connections to router (and internet); never a problem...now, even with that &*?&! time Capsule completely out of the loop, the G4 refuses to connect to the iMac...simply won't do it (even when it sees it!)...now because of the snowstorm in Canada, can't even reach Apple...nice real nice...wish I never heard of Time Capsule...
Does anybody have any way to work around this crap??? This is ridiculous!

Well I hade so much trouble to change my AP Express and when it arrives, my TC... to put my macs in a subnet. And that's true, I had to create a new network profile. It seems there was a problem with the normal one, but I can't say from where.
The problem I still have is that it cannot memorize one time for all the device order. It's always changing and gives me troubles.

  • Leopard + iChat + Time Capsule Port Forward

    Hi,
    Here are my settings
    OS: Leopard
    Modem: Motorola 2210-02
    Router: Time Capsule
    Macbook
I am trying to use video ichat with my girlfriend in Canada but I can't get it to work. (audio works)
Currently I am using the modem as a Bridge and I forwarded the ports on Time Capsule according to the guide for AEBS (http://portforward.com/networking/static-Mac10.4.htm). However, it's still not working.
Is the problem coming from the port mapping? => in the private ip field should i put the router or the macbook's ip.
Does it make a difference which setting i use as my DHCP beginning address? 10.1.0 vs 192.168.1
Should my dhcp reservations for my macbook (and other laptop) be within or outside the dhcp beginning and end address?
    Sincerely,
    Adama

It should work just setting it to Share An IP in the drop down.
I am not sure if the set up is exactly the same as a Base Station but you should have a pane like this

  • EHDs and Time Capsule

Okay I know this has been dealt with numerous times but....
I need to get an external hard drive here in Canada where the choices are not huge. I need a reliable 500Gb-1 T which requires no setup and that will work seamlessly with Time Machine and not fry from overheating.
I am tempted by Time Capsule. It may be overkill for me and possibily slow if used as wireless.
Also can I store really big jpgs on that EHD and remove them from the iMac without having them overwritten or having to partition the EHD (beyond me)?
    thanks in advance.

Mazeppa, I can't speak from experience to the heart of your question about Time Capsule, but here's some information about other external HDD options. LaCie Firewire drives are plug and play and are bootable, meaning you boot your Mac from them in addition to booting from your internal HDD. I would recommend getting a tripple interface drive: USB, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800, allowing the greatest compatibility.
Check [here| for their Tripple interface 1TB drive, a really excellent option. This would need to be reformatted to work with Time Machine, however. This is simple, and I or others could walk you through it using Disk Utility found in applications > utilities. LaCie drives, if (re-) formatted to HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) can be used with Time Machine. See the article [here|http://www.lacie.com/more/?id=10050].
Some new LaCie drives come formatted this way, such as the [d2 Quadra|http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10894] and it's [faster cousin|http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=11022] which you probably would not need because its improvements are in the speed of eSATA connectivity which your machine likely does not have the capability to utilize.
Check [here|http://macworld.pricegrabber.com/searchattrib.php/page_id=11/formkeyword=laciebig+disk+extreme/rd=1/st=query] for better prices on drives. The first one listed is the basic LaCie tripple interface.
I'm curious to hear what others say about using Capsule as a normal external HDD, with or without partitions. Partitioning is within your reach, it takes just a few steps using Disk Utility.
Hope this helps a bit ~jeremy

  • US Time Capsule in EU?

    Hi there!
I brought my Time Capsule from the United States to the EU (Scandinavia) and I'm having minor problems here.
At first the "Wireless Network Options" dialog doesn't give any other options for county than American ones (US, Canada, Brazil, Venezuela, etc). Ok, I kept the US and everything works. I know there's some channel differencies between EU and US, but I hope I am not breaking too many telecomm laws by now...
The second and more serious problem is that 5 GHz radio mode is not working. If I choose 5 Ghz mode, my laptop (the newest macbook pro model, from EU) won't see it. The laptop works with other 5 GHz Airport Extreme, so there's nothing wrong with my laptop. 2.4 GHz works fine, not problem here. I've tried all tricks I am aware but no result. Is this due the piece of hardware thinks it's still in the States?
Do you guys have any ideas what's is going on? Or how do I change this US identity thing to EU. My TC has decided that he is a proud american and do not pretend to be silly european like I am. Is there any way to convince him to play with european way?
Time Capsule is something 3 years old and it's firmware is the newest version for this model: 7.4.2
My OS X and Airport Utility are up to date too.
    Hjälp!

Select a 5 GHz Channel from among one of the following to see if that helps:
    36, 40, 44, 48
5 GHz radio mode has only one channel to choose and it is "automatic". No other options given.
Thanks for the Wikipedia article you gave me. I was afraid of this kind of thing. I guess the TC selects automatically "free" channel that is ok in States but forbidden in EU. And my laptop won't even scan those frequences because there's no point for that... Oh dear.
Don't think there is any way to change the firmware in the US version to another region. Or, if there is, it is a secret available only in hidden menus or options.
    Bummer.

  • Cannot Backup to Time Capsule

    Hi everyone,
I have not have been able to back up to my 2 year old Time Capsule for the past 3 weeks.
I brought it into the Apple store today and the Genius tried resetting, reformatting, and trying everything to try to get it to back up. Everything failed. He said that the Time Capsule hard drive is failing and the only other thing I could try is to zero out erase the time capsule. I brought it home and tried several things, tried erasing, and then tried to zero out erasing, it got to about half way and it stops and gives me an error. So i try doing a quick erase and it preforms fine. So it is erased and clean, and I try backing up, well all of a sudden it starts backing up, I was so happy, Then at about 500mb backed up it just closes, gone, quit. I was like, okay. So I tried backing up again, it says making back up disk available and gives me error 22, back up disk not available. Then I tried opening the sparsebundle my self, then my finder freezes doesn't open the sparsebundle, I opened the force quit window and relaunched the finder. The finder closes but doesn't relaunch, I try opening the finder myself and it gives me error, finder could not be opened error 10810. I rebooted my macbook, once up and running, I deleted the sparsebundle and reformatted the time capsule disk AGAIN. After erasing, I tried backing up again, gives me error 1, back up disk could not be created. WHAT IS GOING ON!!!! ANYONE, PLEASE HELP!! I have tried everything except replacing the HDD. I am going to buy a new hard drive tomorrow and see if that is it,

    Apparently he was right.
If you have AppleCare on a Mac, purchased within two years of the TC, the TC is covered, too.
If not, call AppleCare (800-694-7466 if you're in the U.S. or Canada). Tell them what's been going on, and ask very nicely what they can do for you. They've replaced a number of them in such circumstances.
Otherwise, your options are to get a new one, or open it up and replace the hard drive yourself.

  • Time Capsule flashes amber (slow) and not being picked up by Airport Utility; cannot set up Time Capsule

Airport Time Capsule purchased in Canada, trying to set up in home in Mexico.  Connected to isp via ethernet cable, tried resets and power off/on on both TC and isp modem.  TC flashes amber (slow), and is not picked up by Airport Utility on Macbook or iPad.  Do I have a faulty TC that has to be returned?  Wireless signal from provider is strong and reliable for last 5 yrs.  Please help

Got it figured :-)  Unable to pick up TC via Airport Utility on MacBook Pro or iPad. Used iPad via Settings-WiFi to pick up TC and enter edit functions. Once WAN deselected, Bridge selected, DHCP selected got the steady green light on the TC.  Airport utility now picks up the TC no problem on both iPad and Macbook.  System now fully operational.

  • ISP Router/Modem   Time Capsule - Optimal Setup

I've read many different threads on this issue but none have really address my question fully, so posting this in the hopes of getting some feedback.
I currently have an ISP that supplies a DSL Modem/Router that serves a dual purpose, provide me with internet and TV service.  In Canada it's called Bell Fibe TV.  Currently, I have the ISP Modem Wifi OFF, wired it to my Time Capsule and use it to provide Wifi throughout the house.
My question is related to all my other devices and whether they should be connected to the Time Capsule or the ISP Router.  Time Capsule and Router are both located in the basement.  I have my house hard wired with ethernet to the basement with 3 main outlets, one in the basement for my iMac computer/office, one on the main floor, and one on the top floor.
I have two 3 Apple TV's, one in the basement, one on the main floor and one on the top floor.  I use a 5-port ethernet switch on the main floor as I have a variety of different devices there ie: Apple TV, TV Receiver Box, Sonos Player etc.  I also have an Airport Express that is wirelessly extending my Wifi.
What is the optimal setup in this situation?  I have my Time Capsule on DHCP with router mode OFF (Bridged).  Should I be connecting the hard-wired ethernet cables that go throughout the house to the ISP Router/Modem or to the Time Capsule? Does it matter? In recent weeks, I've noticed some odd issues where my Apple TV will lose its network settings and not find the network.
Also, I noticed in BRIDGE mode, there's no way to setup a Guest account on Wifi.
Looking for any suggestions/help on this.
    Thanks

My question is related to all my other devices and whether they should be connected to the Time Capsule or the ISP Router.
If the Time Capsule is configured correctly, it makes no difference whether devices connect to the Time Capsule or the ISP modem/router, since both the modem/router and Time Capsule are on the same network.
I have my Time Capsule on DHCP with router mode OFF (Bridged)
That is the correct setting for your situation.
Should I be connecting the hard-wired ethernet cables that go throughout the house to the ISP Router/Modem or to the Time Capsule?
    See answer above.
The best practice, wiring wise, would be to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the modem/router to an Ethernet switch. Then connect the Time Capsule and all other Ethernet connections to the switch.
Performance will not be any better this way, but the network layout and troubleshooting are easier in this type of setup. If you do not want to add a switch, then connect to the most convenient port on either the modem/router or Time Capsule.
Also, I noticed in BRIDGE mode, there's no way to setup a Guest account on Wifi.
That is correct. The Guest Network feature will only work correctly if the Time Capsule is the main router for a network....not a bridge to the network.

  • Time capsule find iPhone location issue

Bought a used Time Capsule from someone in Puerto Rico. Plugged it in, it was blank. Did the backup procedure and set up my wifi. Now My iPad shows up in 'find iPhone' as being in Puerto Rico. What is going on and what should I do?

All apple routers are regionalised and that cannot be changed.. look at the wireless location and you will see there is a limited number of countries you can choose from.. apple do not allow it to be changed.. that is to make you buy locally.
I am not sure what other countries are under the same region as US.. Canada and some S.American countries.
Make sure it is set correctly.
See this thread..Re: Time capsule and 5GHZ Channels
And do a search for country with airport.

  • True hard reset of Time Capsule

    Hi,
I recently bought a Time Capsule that I set up at home and works fine.
Now, I going to live to NYC for some months and I'm thinking about bring it with me.
My question is about different regulations in radio frequency in some countries. I remember that when I set the TC up for the first time, the Airport Utility asks me about the region where I live. I answered in Europe. Here, there is no legal possibility of using channels 140-165. So, when I choose Wireless Manual Configuration I can't select these 140-165 channels.
But in USA, I can use the higher channels that now I can't select.
I've done the different resets explained in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728 but after none of them, when I newly set up the TC, the utility asks me for the region where I live.
    I use Airport Utility 5.5.1 a TC 7.5.1
    Thanks,
    Mike

If you purchased the Time Capsule in Europe, you won't be able to "convert" it for full use in the U.S. and Canada.
You are resetting the device back to the factory defaults for the region in which it was sold. But, it's not possible to change a European version to the U.S. or vice versa.
The following information and chart may help you find the channels that will work in both regions.

  • I cannot setup time capsule for first time

    Hi!
I have a brand new macbook pro and time capsule 2tb 4th gen. I have been trying to set up the TC for some days now but it just won't work. Maybe it is because I live in China and I bought them in Canada (does not make sence but ok) but I keep on getting the message "your apple wi-fi base station does not a valid ip address"
I have an existing wifi connection so what I do is connect the modem to my TC (the cable that normally goes from modem to router -a chinese router provided by isp with an ip address on it and some admin things), then I open airport utility and follow the steps. I obviously do not get very far.. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I tried hard reset, power turn-off for 24h and all youtube videos out there and I have yet to see the (green) light!
Your help is very much appreciated!!
    Chris

Download and install the real utiity.. v6 is a drainer.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Since the modem you already have is likely a router.. setup the TC in bridge.
Go to 5.6 airport utility, manual setup, internet tab.
    Connection sharing.. off, bridge mode.
update the TC and plug the modem into wan (but any port is fine in bridge). WAN port has the circle symbol and slightly spaced from the others.. nearest the usb and power end.
Now setup wireless.. either turn it off and keep using wireless in existing router.. if available.
Or setup wireless name and setup as per your requirement.. but note.. TC are regionalised.. those sold in North America do not offer China as a region. You need specific ones for that region. So be careful that you do not use wireless in the wrong channel or power settings as I doubt the Chinese authorities will take kindly to you.

  • DHCP issues with Time Capsule

When I connect my MBP via direct ethernet cable, I have no issue.  However, when I connect my Time Capsule to the modem and try and connect using wifi I do not get any joy.
The cable modem I use come from TekSavvy in Canada and seems to function correctly when connecting my MBP directly. However, the Time Capsule does not connect.  I have used the Airport Utility and it looks as though the IP address shown is wrong -- I have renewed the DHCP lease when connected by ethernet -- and I wonder if that is problem.  When I use the edit function, there is a button to renew the DHCP lease but when I click it nothing seems to happen.
This set up was working without issue two days ago. I woke up to find that my modem was not 'provisioning'.  I called my ISP who have cleared that error but now I can not connect through my Time Capsule.
    Any thoughts?

This was looking pretty easy and standard problem until this point... ahhh... why do things work and then stop working.. hard to say. Cable being a fairly mysterious thing at the best of times.
    Several things matter..
Did it work only only one computer.. when it was working, were you able to have several devices connected.. if you only tested with one, it could have always been wrong.
    I need you to clarify...
When I connect my MBP via direct ethernet cable, I have no issue.  However, when I connect my Time Capsule to the modem and try and connect using wifi I do not get any joy.
Direct ethernet cable to the Modem or to the TC??
When you swap over and plug the TC into the modem, are you power cycling the modem.. this is essential unless the modem is also working as a router.
Tell us modem model and if you know which it is .. modem or router and if running in router mode.. otherwise tell us the IP you get when you plug the MBP into the modem by ethernet.. assuming that is the case.
Power cycle the modem for at least 20min whenever you swap.. some ISP will accept less.. 5min.. and some require more, several hours. Check with the ISP for time required.
What model TC and is it in router mode?
    What firmware is it running?
I have renewed the DHCP lease when connected by ethernet -- and I wonder if that is problem.  When I use the edit function, there is a button to renew the DHCP lease but when I click it nothing seems to happen.
Please post a screenshot of the IP you get.. or tell us the details.. You can blank out or cover the last numbers if you are actually getting public IP.. but if private IP leave it.. as it is irrelevant if you post it.

  • Airport can no longer read or write the configuration of Time Capsule

I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.8.3 and maintained with all available patches. I have also a Time Capsule with version 7.6.3 of the firmware. I use AirPort 6.2. So everything seems to be updated with the latest versions.
This has really been a good setup for nearly a year now, but earlier this month Time Machine suddenly stopped to work and could no longer do backups to the Time Capsule. I have tried to factory reset the Time Capsule several times, but I still get problems when writing the configuration to the Time Capsule. I get an error message saying "An error occurred while updating the configuration".
Airport is furthermore not able to detect the Time Capsule correctly anymore, so I have to configure it by entering the IP address. But after setting up WLAN, disks, etc. and enhanching the security, I just receive the error message when I try to write the config. The Internet connection works perfectly anyway, both via cable and wireless.
    Anyone got any tips?

Do the setup by ethernet in full isolation from the network.
Start from a full factory reset.
I would recommend you take the firmware back to 7.6.1 or even earlier if the TC is older than 12months. 7.5.2 was very reliable. All these bugs started with 7.6 and the change to Lion.
I would also recommend installing 5.6 utility.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
