Time Capsule inernal transfer speed 100Mbps

Hi,
I am currently able to achieve a stable 12.5MB/s = 100Mbps. However my Vista computer has a 1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet adapter and it is connected to the time capsule using a CAT5e cable which should support 1000Mbps speeds. Why am I unable to achieve higher than 100Mbps on a 1000Mbps adapter? Thank you in advance.
P.S. I'm aware that 125MB/s = 1000Mbps is unachievable but at least 200Mbps = 25MB/s would make me happy.

250-270 Mbps with a 5 GHz connection is what I see on the network here.

  • Time Capsule data transfer speeds

    Hi,
I just bought the 1TB Time Capsule. I'm copying 117GB from MacPro to TC which after an extremely slow start 12Mbps is now bouncing around between 80 and 120Mbps. For Gigabit Ethernet (CAT6) these speeds are not impressive. Out of curiosity, what does everyone else see? I've had 2 Macs connected together at 450Mbps so was expecting similar from TC with its "server-grade" hard disk.

You don't need a modem with FIOS, you can just get rid of the VZ router and replace it with your own (you call Verizon to get them to change your connection from COAX, the same thing that goes to your tv, to ethernet from your ONT) but will lose video on demand on your tv  and caller id on tv. If you  want those to stay you can keep the VZ box and play with configurations listed here.
Think you should actually say that without the router you'd lose fios tv completely (it has to be in the network somewhere to provide coax signals), though possibly you could connect a coax cable from the ont directly to 1 tv.

  • My Time Capsule gives good speeds to my MacBook but...

My Time Capsule gives good speeds to my MacBook but not my PC via ethernet though when plugged in the other Time Capsule, just fine...? I can't figure it out. My speed here is supposed to be 32Mbps and my MacBook gets around that via ethernet (all ports tested) and via WiFi. My desktop is a PC running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (hosts all my iTunes) and it gets via ethernet 1.1Mbps if it can even connect to the site. So when I tried my friends Time Capsule, everything is prefectly fine for the PC. Cannot figure it out at all. Any help or tips to try to narrow down the problem would be appreciated. Thanks!

Open the network settings on the PC.. is it connecting at gigabit?
Via ethernet you should be running much faster than 30mbps.. that is ok for wireless not ethernet.
1mbps on PC indicates a real issue.
Open the admin tools and check networking for errors.. if there are any errors at all something is wrong.
Turn off ipv6 as that does sometimes also cause issues.
I have multiple pc and Mac connected without issues.. so I think there is some setting issue going on.

  • More Time Capsule / Airport Extreme Speed Issues

I have noticed a few of these post and also need assistance on this.
    My setup is:
Brand New Dual Band Time Capsule
Brand New N Band Airport Express
    Older G Airport Express
The time capsule is set up as the router, N Band Airport Express is used to extend the network. The older G band express is connected to the network for music streaming but not to extend it.
We have three computers, iMac with G band airport card, Macbook and a new MacBook Air.
When we are in the range of the time capsule the internet speed is great. Download speed > 5 mps or more.
When we are in the range of the Airport Express the internet speed is terrible and unuseable ~ < .5 mps
I have tried changing the channel settings for the G and N bands on the router with no change in performance. I have disconnected the cordless phones (DECT type) and no change.
Suggestions are greatly appreciated. If this does not work can someone recommend another router which works with our Macs that I can extend.
    Thanks

With your networking equipment, I would suggest the following for best overall bandwidth performance for both radios:
o Reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) to use the following radio mode: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g/n
o Configure the TC to use a separate Network Name for the 5 GHz radio.
o Configure the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) to extend the TC's 2.4 GHz radio.
o Configure the 802.11g AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to join the 2.4 GHz network.

  • Time Capsule file transfer - why so slow?

I've got a simultaneous dual-band Time Capsule serving as a router for my network, which includes a newer Macbook Pro and an older PowerPC G5.
When I transfer a 2GB file directly from the G5 to the MBP (this is of course going through the TC as the router), it takes about 95 seconds, which is 22 MB/s or 172 Mbps if you prefer.
When I transfer the same file from the G5 to the Time Capsule's drive, it takes about 190 seconds, about 11 MB/s or 86 Mbps.
Why is the Time Capsule's drive so much slower? Are these speeds typical for the TC, for example, when you are using Time Machine to back up? (I don't use Time Machine myself, because I'm running Tiger.)
When I hook the two computers directly to each other using ethernet, the same file takes 80 seconds to transfer (25 MB/s or 205 Mpbs).

Well, that is a disappointment. And somewhat puzzling, given that TC is supposed to be a backup solution. You'd think it would be fast. I don't think the drive hardware itself is slow, given what I've read about them (Hitachi Deskstar?).
I have the book you mention and looked up the quote. It also says, "This is partly due to inefficiencies in copying many small files in Apple Filing Protocol
(AFP), and partly due to the low-power, but adequate, processor in the Extreme N (both models)."
The AFP possibly explains why my G5 (Tiger) is slower at writing to the Time Capsule than my husband's Macbook Pro (Leopard).

  • Time capsule ethernet transfer slow

I have a new 3 tb time capsule.  I have used it to back up my mac before doing a fresh install.  I also transfered my large 250gb iphoto library via ethernet cable to the time capsule in a seperate folder.  When I completed the new install of mountain lion I used migration assistant to transfer the base data and then individually transfered documents and sub folders with minial fuss. 50 gb taking 1hr.  I am now trying to transfer the iphoto library and it is giving me a 7-22 days transfer time.  This makes no sense, please advise.

Time estimates are displayed using the current connection rate.
It is normal for the backup to start quite slowly as it tries to analyze all of the data to be backed up or transferred,  and then speed up significantly for the bulk of the transfer and then slow down a bit toward the end of the backup.

  • New Time Capsule Ethernet operating at 100mbps

    Hi,
A collegue of mine just bought a new time capsule for our office (3TB one) which features '3 gigabit ethernet ports'. I have my Macbook Pro plugged into a Belkin Thunderbolt Dock and the ethernet from that to the TC (the ethernet socket in dock is gigabit). When doing this I only get 100mbps, but if I take the ethernet cable plugged into the WAN port of the TC and put it into my dock I get 1 Gigabit connection through my thunderbolt dock.
Clearly it is the TC limiting the link speed, and at the moment it is better to operate on wifi with a link speed of 450mbps. My question is what do I have to configure on the time capsule to allow the ethernet ports to give a 1 Gigabit link speed.
    Help is appreciated!
    Regards,
    Jayden

Two TCs here both check in at Gigabit Ethernet on all of the LAN ports, so you might want to take the TC to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer if you have one near you to let them take a look.
There are no port settings or adjustments in AirPort Utility 6.x to make changes to the Ethernet ports.

  • Airport time capsule wi-fi speed

I have an Airport Time Capsule and my internet service is 100Mbps. Hard wired to the Time Capsule I get close to 100Mbps that but when using wi-fi the max speed is around 40Mbps. Is this a function of the unit or is there a setting that I need to change?

So to get a good signal to my Smart TV which is in the next room I guess I should hard wire it also.
Hard wired connections are always the better performance and reliability choice, if possible.
As far as a good location for the Time Capsule for wireless, think of it as if it were a water sprinkler and you want to get as much of the room as "wet" as possible.
There might be a worse spot to locate a Time Capsule than under a desk, but off hand, I can't think of one unless it is inside a cabinet.
The A1355 version is known as a 3rd Generation Time Capsule. Depending on when you purchased the product, it is 4-5 years old at this point. Five years, on average, is about all that you can really expect from a router designed for home use, so you might want to start thinking about a replacement at some point. The top rated speed on the 3rd Generation is 540 Mbps, far greater than your ISP can hope to deliver.
Here is a comparison of the Time Capsule models:

  • Internet 2 times slower, but transfer speed ok

    Hi!
Have a time capsule 1st gen connected to wimax modem via ethernet, bridge mode.
When connecting to modem i have a 8 mbps speed, to time capsule - just about 4.
The weirdness is that the transfer rate between pc and capsule is about 130 mbps, so the signal is ok.
Assuming that there is no problem on the modem side (direct connection works well), what can be wrong? I tried to play with the settings on TС and sometimes it gave me about 0,5 mbps when the inner network speed was ok.
Where to look? What do i have to change?

Don't know what's causing it, but a few things to check are:
-- Do you have to run the TC in Bridge mode for your setup?
    -- Make sure you're using WPA2 Personal password protection/encryption.
-- What mode network is the TC set up for, and what modes are your PC capable of receiving. Generally, you will choose between 802.11 a, b, g, or n, or some combination of those. For most modern stuff you're going to want to use n.
-- Newer base stations support 2.4 Gz and 5 GHz bands. 5 GHz is faster, but has more limited range (meaning, it could actually be slower if it's far away) and less ability to penetrate obstacles such as walls. This is something you need to experiment with. Not sure if your Gen 1 supports 5 GHz.
-- You might be getting interference. Microwave ovens are notorious for this, but it can come from other sources, including cordless phones, wireless speakers, Bluetooth, DSS satellite receiver dishes, baby monitors, and other Wifi networks in the area. Try setting your TC to a specific channel instead of Automatic, and try a few different channels. There also used to be a checkbox called something like "Use interface robustness"...I think they might have changed the wording and offhand I can't remember what they call it now, but basically it can try using a few tricks to get around external interference (as I recall it uses smaller data packet sizes). Note that if you're not having problems, you want this OFF, as it will reduce speeds. But, if you are experiencing interference, it can help a lot.
-- Make sure your TC is set to transmit a full power signal (it can be reduced, normally you don't want to).
Just a few things to take a look at.

  • Time Capsule temperature and speed

Hello, my name is Jan Mulder, (NL)
I recently bought a Time Capsule 1TB for back-up. Installation no problem, very easy and quick.
But, to get 60Gig transferred it took over 10 hours. I have 705 Gigs to transfer for the first time, so it seems it will take 3-4 days. The surface of TC feels rather hot as well.
    Is this normal?
If this is normal, please help me ease my mind.
    Thanks

its normal for that feel of heat. I did replace my 500 gig HD with a WD 1000 gig "green" HD and the heat did decrease including the sound of the HD is much quieter.
You can launch Activity Monitor found in your Utility folder to check the speed when transferring files.
Typical speeds (acceptable) would be N wireless about 8M/sec and wired by ethernet about 14M/sec

  • Using Time Capsule to transfer data to a new machine

I have just taken possession of a new iMac. I need to transfer the data from my old one and wondered if Time Capsule was the most efficient way of doing this.
I understand that there is a transfer utility built into the Mac OS which allows you to transfer data from one machine to another via Firewire, but it occurred to me that my Time Machine might provide a quicker and easier way of doing it.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

I would go with FireWire. Boot the old Mac into "target disk mode" by holding down the "T" key while it is booting. Then connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable and launch the Migration Assistant utility.
If your Time Machine backup is on your network (rather than being directly connected), transferring the data from the other computer over FireWire is probably going to be a lot faster.

  • Airport Extreme (time capsule model) internet speed EXTREMELY slow.

Hello, first thank you for any help on this as it is a bit frustrating for me.
I recently noticed my internet speed was running significantly slower on both my MacBook Pro and on my wifes MacBook.
I had my ISP come and check out the problem. They hooked my MacBook Pro directly to the modem and my speed went from under 1 mb to over 5mb.... he then had me hook up directly to the lan port on the airport extreme and my speed was once again back down to the 1 mb range. He concluded that it must be a problem with the speed once it hits the Airport Extreme.
He ended up giving me a different modem, its a 2wire wireless. I have since connected my airport extreme to the new modem and am still pulling down the same speed, but now I have connected directly to the new 2wire wireless modem and am getting my 5 mb speed.
Can anyone give me any help or advice on what I can do with my airport extreme time capsule so that I can get the speed I should be getting from it.
    Thanks again.

More information. I have a separate router for ISP connect/DHCP. I only use my Airports to create a WDS and bridge onto my home network. I have never allowed 2.4GHz or 5GHz phones in the house, just to limit interference. I live way out in the country so interference from neighbors is negligible to nonexistent. Speed testing done with Speakeasy.net/speedtest
I moved all the hard wired machines from the TC to my switch. Which will impact the speed of my backups, but it helped with internet throughput for those machines.
Then I split my WiFi into 2 separate nets, each with a connection to my home network switch. I created a b/g network with my ufo Extreme and my Express (NET 1). I left my TC set for n/b/g (NET 2). As long as my MacBook was powered off internet speed were nice and fast. As soon as I turned on my MB the speeds were impacted, not as bad as before.
I then changed NET 2 to be n-only 5GHz and retested. These was a small but noticeable impact for wireless machines but I have concerns because my ISP is wireless and runs at or near 5GHz.
I then changed NET 2 to be n-only 2.4Ghz and retested. Again a small impact for wireless machines whenever my MB was connected to NET 2.
I then had my MB join NET 1 and speeds were nice and fast all around. My solution, shutdown the wireless on my TC and use it as just a network drive while I use my old reliable b/g hardware for WiFi.
Maybe someday this Draft version of 802.11n will be finalized and have no issues.

  • HT5097 connect a macbook to a time capsule to transfer data?

I don't have a Mac, just a macbook.  It doesn't have an ethernet port.  So, how do I connect it to my time capsule so that I can transfer the data from my old time capsule to the newer one?

Are you accessing the old Time Capsule by Wi-FI? Try hooking the new Time Capsule to the old Time capsule to see if they will both show up in Finder. If so, copy your files across.

  • VERY Complicated iTunes/Time Capsule/Library Transfer Question

Hi all-- looking for some help before I move my beloved iTunes library (over 500GB) from an old PC to a brand spanking new MacBook Pro and a 1TB Time Capsule.
I want to store the music files on the Time Capsule and access everything wirelessly. When I am away from the apartment/TC, I'll usually have my iPod on me-- which I would just plug in and access it through iTunes.
MOST important would be to have everything transfer over and run clean and fast, without weird errors etc. If I can keep my old playlists/play counts/date added etc, great but not necessary.
Any thoughts on the best solution? Do I transfer/copy over using the new sharing function in iTunes? Or is it safer to just connect the hard drive to the computer/time capsule-- and from there, do I make a folder on the TC my default iTunes folder?
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated-- I went Apple (I also just bought an iPhone) for seamless and fast solutions, so I am hoping all this works!
    Thanks,

  • Time Capsule Data Transfer

I have been transferring data from one Time Capsule to another by dragging and dropping over my wireless network. However, it is taking an inordinate amount of time, especially for movies and tv shows. Is there a quicker way to do this. Can I attach one to the other - ethernet (internet only?) or firewire?

    three choices
wireless N speed will be about 6.5 m/sec
    ethernet cate 5e + will be 11.3 M/sec
or pull the hard drive out(warranty becomes NG) and copy your data to it. You'll need to reformat it first.
