Time Capsule internet drop-out problem.... Solved (for now....?)

I am new here, but i would like to share my experiences with a problem a lot of people seem to have here aswell.
I got home last week after being abroad for work for two days, and noticed i couldn't get on the internet again. My system uses an iMac, TC and an internet modem i got from my ISP, which is a Motorola modem.
Hooked the TC up to the modem via ethernet and this has been working without a glich for about 2 years now. I first noticed the problem on my iPhone which was unable to get on the internet. Connected to the network just fine, but no internet. Very strange, as i had a solid green light on my TC.
Checked the internet on my iMac, and i found the same problem. Did a reset on the TC and the modem, and things seemed to be ok again. But.... after about 20mins. internet was not working any more again. By now i was getting rather frustrated, because in the AirPort Utility it said everything was working the way it should, including a solid green light on the TC.
Been going over everything i could think off. Soft reset, hard reset, going back to factory settings, resetting the modem. Just resetting the modem, just resetting the TC, resetting both at te same time. Nothing seemed to work, the problem kept coming back! Downgraded the software on the TC, upgraded again. Nothing.
Strange thing was, i hooked up my computer via ethernet directly to the cable-modem and internet was just fine, so no problem there, which was confirmed when i called my ISP (which is great... as long as there is no problem)
After 3 days i finally called Apple, and they were ok to help me. For free just for once (next time i will have to pay 49euros!!) and told him about my problem. He gave me all suggestions i already tried, except changing channels on the TC.
After the call i tried doing that, going from channel 1 to 6, but still... after 20 - 30 mins. internet would drop.
But.... i put it on channel 7 and for now it is working great again. (no loss of internet for about 36hours!!)
This seems to be THE solution for my problem. Apparently, one of my neighbours put up a device which was interfering with the signal of my TC, which caused all my problems!
For now i am really happy everything is back, up and running and i thought i just let you all know about my problems, and solution, because this forum has been a great help!
And... before i forget.... i am running firmware 7.3.2 now... because i read a lot of problems about 7.4.1 and things are running great for me now !!
Hope this little story can help someone else..... try change the channels TC is working on !!
Good luck to you all!

  • Apple TV & Time Capsule Internet Dropping Connection

    Dear Mac/Apple TV/Time Capsule users,
i had experienced the Dropping Connection problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1959199&start=0&tstart=0 .
and now i want to contribute to that thread
My hardware Imac 21,5, TC 1T(1gen), ATV (1 gen, 160GB)
Recently since i wanted to put a movie on my ATV i noticed than after uploading for 5 min
the upload stopped and the connection dropped from my TC .
    So i've done everything:
    - reboot TC many times, change channel, downgrade to 7.3.2, upgrade again
    - downgraded ATV & upgraded again
The only way to have back the wi-fi connection from TC is to search and put again the password from the ATV .
i just solve the whole problem setting the wireless of the TC to N 5ghz good but invisible to my iPhone4…
The question is what happened ??? Maybe an interference from another N Router/Cordless Phone ?
    Hope you'll find a reason 4 this..i can't explain !!!!!!!
    Ciao

I wish I had a solutipn for you... I am having a similar problem which started in the last two days with my playstation not finding the network from the TC, although the AT! and everything else in the house can find it just fine. The connection in the AT1 is spotty. I wonder if setting the TC to "internet robustness" will help or hurt? I just tried that and will let you know if it helps. Also, often, the syncing stops and does not complete between our iMac (i7 processor) and our AT1.

  • Airport Time Capsule keeps dropping out

I have just got an Airport Time Capsule to store my photos on from my mac book pro.  TC is in bridge mode to my existing router and green light is on.  Mac cant find the device.  If I disconnect and then reconnect power to TC the mac finds it again for about 2 minutes and then it drops out again.  Help!

They do seem to have some wan connection bugs.. It is not just your virgin media modem.. lots of cable modems are bad.. lots of fibre modems are bad.. some work and some not.
You can try and fix it.. sometimes using a crossover cable or a switch between the modem and the TC will fix it.. but IMHO the TC is expensive and this is not the kind of testing you should be doing as end user.. take it back and get your money back.

  • Quick question!!  Is it mandatory that I set up my DSL through the time capsule? I'd like to leave my current modem from my provider as the primary unit for networking.  So in other words can I just set up the time capsule as a back-up device for now and

Quick question!!  Is it mandatory that I set up my time capsule as my DSL modem?  Based on the location of my iMAC right now it would be better to just leave the modem provided by my internet provider in place.  I really just want to use the time capsule as a back-up storage device for now and connnect the ethernet cable from my ISP at a later date.

Generally it is easier to bridge the TC and plug it into the router.. it then lives on the network.. it is after all, a network drive.. and you can access it via your existing connection whether wireless or wired to the existing modem.
If you really want a totally stand alone setup please tell me how you are presently accessing internet on the Mac you want to backup on the TC.

  • Installation problems solved for XP SP2 systems.

I've been pulling my hair for days trying to install SC2, but had no luck.
The installation process DOES have a bug. Use the following tactic in addition to disabling any firewalls and virus programs:
Right-click on the installer file and select 'Compatibility' . Click 'Run this program in compatibility mode:'. Finally, simply select Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5) mode.
Problem solved for now. Hope this helps.

This is very interesting akian ty - I will definitely try this at the weekend. I can install and run on a laptop with XP SP2 - and it had previous versions installed on it. However on the desktop PC I have not been able to install.
My problems have been with opening ports and appserver not starting. I will post back here how I get on with your tip. Thanks and also for the other suggestions that people have tried to help me with.

  • Imac 20" problems ethernet to Time Capsule & Internet

I have a 20" Core Duo Imac that I have connected via ethernet to my Time Capsule 1GB.
When I access the internet initially the page does not load for about 10 seconds that comes down at full rate,(I have a Virgin 20MB connection). If I do a "SpeedTest" it shows full speed but again only after about 10 seconds of waiting.
If I use the wireless function of the time capsule i have no problem with internet loading.
I presume this is a ethernet problem, I have tried different cables and it is no different. I have looked at setting the speed to manual but still the same.
    Does anyone have any ideas....

I would have to disagree with Smokerz. I've had repeated problems backing up to my airdisk through my AEBS when my computer was connected via an ethernet cable. Backups would go fine for a week or so, then suddenly the DMG wouldn't mount. There was no way to successfully repair it, and I'd have to start over again.
I have several computers on my network, and they were all backing up just fine, except mine, which was connecting with a cable. The others were backing up wirelessly with no problems.
Finally, on a hunch, I disconnected my ethernet cable from my AEBS and opted for using my Airport card. It seemed silly since the computer is right next to the AEBS, but it has been working for nearly a month with no significant errors.
(Before someone asks, I did not have the Airport connection running simultaneously with the ethernet connection. I used only one at a time, and I had them correctly configured with good, working equipment.)

  • I install a time capsule and I have to solve the last thing bsGN and it asks me for "a value for bsGN is required", I have no idea what it means. Somebody who knows what to do here? Thank you.

    H E L P !
I am installing a time capsule and I have to solve a  last problem, bsGN and the system asks for "a value for bsGN is required", I have no idea what that means. Can anybody help me please? Thank you.

There is no value bsGN in a Time Capsule.
Where is this request coming from?
    Please give a screenshot.
Who is the ISP? What kind of modem is it?
I can find no info relevant to bsGN .. you will need to give us specifics or ring your ISP about it.
Is bsGN even English?? Is it the ISP name??

  • Apple Time Capsule Keeps Dropping Internet

My Apple Time Capsule keeps dropping internet or having extremely slow internet. If I run a speed test I am getting 90+mbs. What occurs is if I try to load a page, there will be a very long delay and sometimes the page will eventually load, other times it won't. When I try to stream something from youtube, If I can get to the page of the video, it won't have an issue. When I hard wire to my modem, I don't have an issue at all. Only hardwired through the router or using wireless through the router does this occur. The light on the router never has turned amber and the link light on my modem is constantly flashing. The only thing that will occur is that the Apple Airport utility keeps connecting and disconnecting from my modem.
I've reset the router and modem. I've restored the router to factory settings and reset up my network, all to no success.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Thinking I'll replace the motorola with a Cisco DPC3010
You may find it is not much better..
I do think the problem is more on the Apple side..
If you are a tech.. let me suggest you make yourself up a 100 mbit (ie use only the two pairs) crossover cable..
If that does not work.. try reverse polarity..ie in the ethernet on one end swap + and - .. It is an issue that has cropped up before where ethernet is just wired wrongly.. and it doesn't fail completely but becomes unreliable.
BTW the hardware reliability of the new AC version apple routers.. is definitely on the bottom of the apple list.
I bought an AC TC and the first one had this WAN port issue from day one.. when I replaced it after a week (it died completely which was convenient).. the second one has been much better).
The modems I have heard that works well is the zoom or ubee..
Using another router doesn't need to be expensive.. you can still stick to the apple in bridge.. you only need a router that does routing..
And the TP-Link can be flashed to gargoyle.. a hugely superior firmware btw.. solid .. reliable and it will track usage and do a lot of stuff well beyond Apple's keen.

  • Time Capsule keeps dropping network connection

I recently got a Time Capsule to replace a dead external drive and my AirPort Express. I was able to set up the Time Capsule as a router with little trouble but using it as a Time Machine backup drive is driving me crazy. Each time I start a backup the Time Capsule eventually drops my network connection before it can finish. I have about 200GB on my internal drive. Could this be too much to transfer over Wi-Fi?
I never experienced a dropped network connection when I was using the AirPort Express and my second Mac (a G4 iMac) never looses the connection. Any ideas what could be going on here?

Very interesting. Been working this problem from every angle. Noticed two kickers.
    1) Transmission would refresh to fast when opening and closing menu bar airport icon.
    2) Transmission never fades when running iStumbler which is continuously interrogating Time Capsule.
MacPro software seems to be forgetting that it is hooked up and drops out. It is a software thing.
I am starting iStumbler for each session automatically now and am having no drop outs. It is keeping Time Capsules attention. It is not required for all computers in the house but certainly is for the MacPro from which I control everything.
Amazing. Can one of the FanBoys bring this to the attention of the right person at Apple? Also, I need work and have many stories of trouble shooting successes. Tell them to hire me. It would save you guys a lot of time.

  • Time Capsule connectivity drops on extended network with Airport Extreme

I have a new Airport Extreme router as the main router in my network and a Time Capsule set to extend the 2.4Ghz network. The routers must be configured in this order because I want the 5Ghz network from the Extreme to cover my main seating area.
The problem I have is that while I'm connected to the Extreme, on either the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz network, the connection to the Time Capsule will 'drop'. The network drive within the Time Capsule will no longer be available and the AirPort Utility no longer shows the Time Capsule. If I reboot the Extreme, the Time Capsule will reappear.
Also, when the connection drops, if I were to move within the primary range of the Time Capsult and connect to the 2.4Ghz network, it will connect flawlessly and I would have access to the Time Capsule and it's resources. It is only access through to the Time Capsule through the Extreme that is no longer available.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Both routers work flawlessly otherwise. I'm fairly certain there isn't a hardware problem here. I've gone through all the configuration settings multiple times and can't find anything that could affect this. I have the latest firmware for both routers and the latest AirPort utility.
One thing to note is that the Time Capsule is a North American unit, while the Extreme is from Hong Kong. I know there are slight differences regarding the wireless channels that both can use, but I don't think this is an issue since the Time Capsule maintains proper internet connectivity the whole time. If it was a channel issue, I'd expect the Time Capsule to lose internet access when this issue arrises.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

7.4.2 firmware does NOT resolve this problem.
I also have this problem -- it started about 2 weeks ago (around July 20?), possibly at the time the new Airport Extreme firmware went into effect. I have two separate Mac laptops that each use Time Machine to back up to different disks that are attached to the Airport Extreme (i.e., each laptop has its own backup-destination disk). Both were working flawlessly before (for more than 6 months); now, each one reliably drops the connection to the disk (produces an error message, and thereafter cannot re-connect to the destination disk until I cycle the Airport Extreme with power-off/on). I had hoped that 10.5.8 would help (the release notes talked about improved stability with Airport connections), but not so.

  • Wireless between Mac Mini and Time Capsule occasionally goes out.

Is there a known issue with certain models of Mac mini's with wireless issues?
I have a Core 2 Duo Mac Mini (with OS X 10.6.6) with a Time Capsule (7.5.2) used as a wireless router. I also have an iMac, a MacBook, a Windows XP machine and 3 iPhones that connect to the Time Capsule. However, my issues only exists with the Mac Mini which sits about 10 feet away from the Time Capsule and is closer than any other computer.
In short, it appears that my Mac Mini intermittently does not connect to the internet. The wireless signal in the menu bar is fully black the whole time. I've tried connecting to a the regular wireless signal and the 5GHz signal. There is no pattern to the intermittence that I notice. I have a constant ping running on google.com as I'm typing this, and will ping successfully 70%-80% of the time and timeout the rest of the time, all while the wireless indicator in the menu bar is full. This issue has come and gone for about a year now. There will be weeks and sometimes months that the issue doesn't appear, and then sometimes it seems to happen several times a day. Sometimes a reboot seems to resolve the issue, sometimes not. It seems that when I'm not doing anything on the internet, the pings continue to respond successfully, but once I start to "surf" is when the connection will start to drop out again. For instance, if I start watching a YouTube video or stream an audio file, the signal drops out again for a while. Sometimes it will reconnect on its own, sometimes i have to turn the Wireless off and then back on to get it to reconnect. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Any ideas?

  • AirTunes with AirportExpress cut or drop out problems - my solution...

I buyed 2 of the Airport Extreme one month ago (Firmware 6.3, Itunes 7.1.1), never got them working fine, till yesterday...
I have A Zyxel ADSL WLAN Router Switch. WPA-PSK as I wanted a secure Network. Both of the AX were connected with static IPs. WLAN was always working fine, but I had many cut outs with airtunes. I wanted a solution with lossles streaming audio with the possibility to connect my Receiver digitally. That's why I bought my first Apple hardware, as I was always told, Apple=Plug'n play. Very frustrating!
I tried other switches, Routers, WLAN adapters and cards, nothing worked. Airfoil does not support multiple speakers yet, so it's useless for me.
In the FAQ of the Airtunes, Apple mentioned to use lower security, as some Computers probably do not have enough power to stream music flawlessly. But my Computers really do have enough power! I think the AX does not have enough power to do that. So I created another wireless network with one of my AX. I set the security to WEP-40bit key and joined this new Network with my other AX. Not the best solution, as I'm now connected to the Internet or to the AX to use Airtunes. Cables could fix that problem, but then I could use a wired system instead...
I use Channel 11 for the AX WLAN (the only clean channel in my area), Multicast to 11, only G mode for Wireless and a 5 characters WEP-40 key and no WDS. Seems to work at the moment.
I hope this will help others with the cut or drop out problem. If you have a working AirTunes system, please post your setup. Mostly I'm interested in a Setup with working WPA...

Thanks, I hope I can help others with this annoying problem...
Sorry, I forgot to write about the RF Interference. Belive me, I spent hours and hours searching for a solution in the Internet and every checkbox the Admin utility offered me to try out... I'm working as a system engineer, and supporting computer systems since the early 90ties, so I'd say I have a bit knowledge about all the networking, WLAN, Audio... In school we had the Apple Mac I with the 12" monochrome monitor and appletalk for networking quite funny!
But back to the RF interference: At the moment I activated it on both AX I own. I have a microwave, wireless phone and I'm living in a Area with many WLAN access points. I can choose between 6 networks!
I'm the only one with a network higher than channel 6, so this area is clean at least.
As my AirTunes do work at the moment, I'm not going to try if I could also deactivate it.
Next step is to try if I can connect the AX Router to the internet. A connection to my ADSL router should do that, but up to now I had very strange behavior when plugging in a ethernet cable to the AX. If this will work, it will be my final solution, at the moment I only see it as a workaround...

  • HT3728 Firmware Update 7.6.4 Error: I uploaded the 7.6.4 firmware update today, and received an error message as it was finalising. As I am using my Time Capsule as the Airport router, I am now no longer able to access it to try to resolve the problem. He

    Dear Support Team,
I agreed to the Time Capsule 7.6.4 update today, but as it was completing, I received an error. It said to close the page and try again.
I use my Time Capsule as my Airport wireless router and now can't access the Time Capsule to re-upload the Firmware update.
Has anyone else had this happen?
Is there a way to resolve the problem?
Do I need to hardwire the Time Capsule? Then what?
    Would really appreciate some help!!
    Thanks everyone.

Factory reset the TC and it should come back to life.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
As a rule .. wireless is not reliable enough for mission critical work like firmware upgrades.. (Heck I don't think it is reliable enough for backups).
Apple doesn't insist on wired connections.. some other manufacturers do.. and post warnings not to attempt it over wireless. Warnings inevitably read after the failed firmware update btw.. so perhaps Apple have decided to just save themselves the hassle.
I believe it is just good practice to use ethernet for any time that sitting on a branch.. whilst sawing it off (ie failure will kill any future access).. means you always use ethernet for any setting up of a wireless router.. but you see I am old.. with grey/white hair.. and too many dead modems and routers around me.

  • Airport Time Capsule 3 TB has problems staying up on!

Airport Time Capsule 3 TB has problems staying up on! It dies every few hours. The time capsule is connected to Xfinity modem. It is possible that there was not much internet activity. Is there a sleep mode, without wake up !?
Since there is no power on/off switch, I have to pull the power cord and push it back in.
    What is going on?

Is it the new AC model??
It is faulty .. return for replacement.. There is several people here with the issue.

Put your experience on the end of that thread.. as the more input the better.
There is a power save but it certainly should not go off.

  • Frustrated w/ constant internet drop-outs...

    Hi All,
So I've been having some serious problems with my APE as it is constantly droppping out the internet signal on my wireless network. Currently, I have 2 computers - an e-mac and g4 12" pb - that are sharing the internet. I've had APE for about 2 years now and it's been working great. But for the past 7 months, it's been dropping the internet signal more frequently and constantly blinking yellow. I can still stream music and print anytime but the internet doesn't go through. On my dsl modem, the link light for the ethernet is intermittent but mostly off even when it's connected to the APE. When I hard line dsl into either of my computers - no problem at all. Which leads me to believe that it's my APE. I've configured the APE in every possible way using AP admin - varying the channel settings, multicast rate, robustness etc, as well as doing various hardware resets. I have the lastest firmware on the APE. I've also moved this bugger in every possible space around my house. After trying all this, it still blinks yellow. I even have an older dsl modem that I tested and it still doesn't work with the APE (after it works flawlessly hardlined in). Every once in a while it goes green and works but guaranteed it will drop out in less than a day.
Anyway, I called applecare a while ago and they told me that with my 2.4 phone, this will eventually happen. But I've even disconnected my phone and it still does this. I just don't understand why this thing can keep it's connection up. I have friends who use 2.4 wireless phones and don't have any issues with their APE. I have friends who have much more precarious set ups (tons of 2.4 signaled toys and brick walls, etc) and no issues to report. Plus, I've seen other wireless systems (such as D-link) that are put in commercial offices and even in the hospital that I work at and obviously they don't have internet drop outs. My system at home is much more simplier and I'm totally at a loss for what to do. I'm tired getting infront of my computers and seeing that the internet has dropped out, reconfiguring and running all over my house trying to find the best place. I'm thinking about getting a d-link/netgear system to replace my APE. It would be sad since everything else apple of mine is fantastic - it's very disheartening for a loyal macaddict.
So, that's where I'm at - totally pooped and frustrated. Man, is it maybe me - am I admitting some radio interference? Oh wise ones in apple support land, I turn to you as my last resort - your assistance would be muchly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    deekay

    How can something like
the APE be so crippled by a 2.4 phone even with the
    various channels to share.
Some 2.4 phones use multiple channels and therefore use the entire spectrum
    Why does this affect some
APE and not all across the board - that's the
frustrating thing. Like I mentioned before, I have
friends that have been running their 2.4 phones (with
multiple handsets) and placed their APE right behind
their TV and no drop outs at all - what gives?
    ...and some phones don't.
A neighbour may be using a 2.4 phone as well.
Anyway, thanks iF for the info and the help - but
I've already been down that road with all the
trouble shooting stuff online. Yes, maybe, as Marc
says, I may need something to strengthen the signal.
This may not work if the noise level is too high.
First identify the interference and see what you can do to eliminate if at all.
    iFelix
