Time capsule is asking to inherit from previous computer but I have not changed computers.

Turned on the computer and  a box popped up from Time Capsule asking if I wanted to backup now. This is the first time this has happened and I have had my computer set up with this Time Capsule for over a year. lt opens a box with three buttons:
>back up now
>inherit back up from previous - it warns that if one selects inherit from another computer, that other computer can no longer back up to this time capsule
>create new back up
It was set up to back up automatically, not sure what has caused it to start asking every time I log on.
So I want to know if  I should "inherit" even though I have not changed computers?

Did you happen to just upgrade Mavericks to 10.9.4?? I should not think so but just to ask if something just happened that could explain the normal irrational behaviour of Mavericks.. if there is nothing that has happened.. well it is the standard ghost in the machine explanation.
If you have several computers backing up to the TC, now might be a good time to make a decision to stop that.
If this is the your iMac in your profile, my suggestion would be as follows.
1. Reset TM
See A4 here.
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
2. Run verify of the backup. See A5 same reference.
3. Install the widget.. See A1 same reference.
If it keeps giving you nonsense.. start over. Delete the existing backup or better still archive it, wipe the TC and start afresh.
I would seriously think about plugging in a USB drive and using Carbon Copy Cloner (or similar third party backup software).. a bootable clone will make a much more reliable backup and you can still have TM backing up to the TC.
See http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html
The value of clones I think has grown considerably since the reliability of TM has dropped dramatically in Mavericks.

Once my photos have been saved by the airport time  capsule can I delete them from my computer hard drive.

Please think about this for a moment.
If you move your images to the Time Capsule...and delete them from your computer's hard drive......then, the only copy of the images that you will have will be on the Time Capsule.
So, now your "originals" are on the Time Capsule....since you deleted them from the computer's hard drive to create more space.
When...not if....the Time Capsule has a problem and you cannot access your images.......where will your backups of your images be?

  • I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on. After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod. Is there a way to do this

I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on.
After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod.
Is there a way to do this?

Unfortunately, unless you have a backup and can restore the iTunes library to the new computer, you are stuck with the current state of the iPod. This is one of those things that makes doing backups so important.
Unless your music is all purchased from iTunes (not from your own CD's that you imported into iTunes and then downloaded to the iPod), you will be able to re-download all your iTunes store music back to the iPod when you install iTunes on the new computer. When you first attach the iPod to the new computer and new iTunes the first time it will tell you that this iPod is synced with another iTunes library and let you initialize the iPod (which will erase everything on the iPod - so don't do this unless you don't care about the stuff on the iPod now).
I've seen 3rd party apps in the past that will let you copy music/content from iPod to computer and bypass iTunes, but not sure if they still exist as this was several years ago.
    good luck

  • I have a charge on my bank account from Apple iTunes but I have not purchased anything in over a month!

Earlier today I imputed my new CC information into my iTunes account so that I could update some previous apps that I had purchased. Apparently due to my previous CC Information having expired I was not able to update my previous purchases (why is that)? Also, I noticed a charge on my account from Apple iTunes but I have not make any recent purchases and I have not received any email receipts stating otherwise. Obviously I will have to cancel my debit card to prevent any further fraudulent charges. Who should I notify at Apple about this to prevent any further criminal activity against myself or others?

You've checked the purchase history on your account via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes, and have you got any auto-renewing subscriptions ?
If the charge is on your newly entered card, then each time that you add or change your credit card details on your account then a small temporary store holding charge may be applied to check that the card details are correct and valid and that it's registered to exactly the same name and address as on your iTunes account - it should disappear off your account within a few days or so.

If it's a different charge which you don't think that you should have then you can contact iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

    Hi skippy2012trev,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you updated your Apple Id and password but now you are being prompted for the old information in iCloud. You are on the right track by changing the Apple ID back to the previous email address temporarily so that you can sign out. You should not need to verify the email address. After you edit the Apple ID back to the old email address and then sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, edit the Apple ID back to the address you would currently like to use. There is no need to change the password again, only the email address, unless you prefer to update the password again.
If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud - Apple Support
    Change your Apple ID temporarily
If signing out and back in to iMessage or FaceTime didn't help, try these steps:
Change your Apple ID to the Apple ID you used previously. You shouldn't need to verify the email address.
Tap Settings > iCloud. Complete these steps only if the Find My [Device] setting is turned on:
Scroll down and tap Sign Out, then tap Sign Out to confirm. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, tap Delete Account, then tap Delete to confirm.
Tap Keep on My [Device] or Delete from My [Device]. In either case, your data remains in iCloud and will be updated on your device when you sign in to iCloud again.
Enter the password for your previous Apple ID.
Change your Apple ID to the new email address that you want to use. You'll need to verify the email address.
Return to Settings > iCloud and sign in with your new Apple ID.
    Cheers,
    Joe

  • Just imported my Library from previous computer, but...

Hi all, I have just imported my Library from previous computer, by Exporting Library on my old laptop, and 'Importing Playlist' on my new Laptop with iTunes...
Its essential that I keep my 205 playlists and Playlist folders. They all appear fine and well, but hardly any of them contain any songs.
For the last 2 years, I have made sure 100% that my iTunes music is stored and accessed from a removable hardrive. I made sure this was plugged in, and set to the same usual 'Drive E' before I imported the playlist.
Any ideas on what has gone wrong?? I cannot afford to loose the playlist contents! The MP3s are all present and correct in their usual locations on my removable hard drive.
Any help on this will be GREATLY received!
    Thanks,
    James

Get the iTunesLibrary.itl file from your old laptop.
With itunes closed, put that itl file on the new laptop, overwriting the existing one.
Now start itunes - is everything there?

how can I download my video from the iphone to my computer?

When you connect your iPhone to your PC, a pop-up box should open saying something like "What would you like to do?" and click import videos and photos. If it doesn't open automatically, go to Start>Computer>Then highlight your iPhone by clicking it once>Then on the tool bar about, near the navigation buttons and search box, click Autoplay (or something like that).
Sorry if my answer isn't as sharp as it should be, I switched to Mac and I use iPhoto for everything.

I am trying to update my macbookpro which shows as needing 15 upgrades. when process is completed it asks to for a restart which takes place. once restarted it does not register any of the updates and repeats the process. Has anyone encountered this issue?

    Hi,
The 10.6.8 is listed in the list of updates that need to be installed, but the same issue keeps re-occuring - I click to do the updates, restart the computer as directed, but the update doesn't take place and it's still listed when I go to show the software updates!  Am I doing something wrong?

  • I have changed my apple password online from my computer but it does not work on my phone.

I had forgotten my apple ID password so I tried to change it and it was not working. I went online and changed it and it works to get into the Manage my account part of the apple site but when I try to download an app the phone tells me that the password is incorrect. what is the deal?

Have you synced your phone to your computer since changing the password? If not, give that a try as it could just need a little help to make it right on your phone.

  • I have a time capsule with my iTunes library from a previous computer.  I now have a new computer with new songs on my iTunes library.  I'd like to retrieve my songs from my iTunes library which is stored in the time capsule.  How do I do this?

Hello there.  Wondering if there's any way I can retrieve songs that are stored in my time capsule that was backed up from my old previous computer?

    Actually you always use ethernet..
MBA does not come with ethernet port.. but apple sells both a cheap usb to ethernet and a much more expensive and much faster thunderbolt to ethernet adapter. With ethernet to eliminite this silly situation of setting up wireless over wireless, so if you make any change you instantly drops you off the network. Like cartoons of people sawing off the branch they are sitting on.
But you can reset.. no reset will do anything at all to the material on the hard disk. You must deliberately erase it.
Read the info because you may only need to do a soft reset. That is hold the reset for 1sec (2-3sec is fine)  as long as you don't hold it for a full reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
Even a full factory reset will not harm your files in any way, (or any further!!)
I am "concerned" that you have no backup to vital files on your TC. That is not wise. TC are no more immune to failure than any other hard disk.. (actually latest ones use the cheapest green WD drives money can buy) and keeping files in only one location is a receipe for disaster. An external drive is much more accessible.. cheaper and tend to be more reliable. There are too many things to break in the TC.. it is designed as a backup target for TM. Not a file store.

  • After resetting Time Capsule, how do I access my previous backups?

After re-setting Time Capsule, how do I access my previous backups?

    Access it to do what??
You can migrate the data.. see Pondini instructions for migrate. (or from apple).
His instructions are a little out of date.. but still more useful than the over generalised stuff Apple give you.

OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks
If you wanted to continue using the backup with TM.. no you cannot inherit a backup from a different machine.
To simply access the backup .. then open the sparsebundle from finder or TM..
See the instructions in Pondini.. Q15-17 here.

  • My MBP doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep

My MBP (OS 10.5.8) doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep.  Thus, every time my MBP wakes from sleep, I need to select the Airport icon in the upper menu bar, select "Join other network", enter SSID and password.  This is very cumbersome.  And, I never had this problem when I was using the ISP's provided wireless router/gateway/DSL modem. Adding the Time Capsule and using it to generate the wireless network has introduced this problem.
It appears that this problem has to do with the hidden SSID.  I don't need the lecture on how hidden SSID provides no serious security benefit.  That's why I have the WPA2 encryption.  I'm interested in a solution that will allow the Time Capsule to generate the wireless network, maintain a hidden SSID, continue to use WPA2 encryption, but have my MBP recognzie and autoconnect to this network.
    Solutions I've alread tried:
    1. Open Network Preferences
    2. Select Airport from left hand column (and ensure Airport is at top of that list)
    3.  Select Advanced
    4.  Delete all Preferred Networks.
    5.  Apply settings.
    6.  Restart computer
    7.  Return to Network Preferences and from Advanced page, manually add my network with hidden SSID and WPA2 password
This solution works fine as long as I don't take my computer elsewhere and connect to another network.  As soon as my preferred networks list gets another network, my MBP stops finding my TC network.  Since I take my laptop to a lot of places (it's a laptop, after all...) this is a problem.
As I say, prior to adding the TC on my network (and using it to generate the wireless network), my MBP had no problem keeping 50+ preferred network names/passwords in the Preferred Network list, but always automatically finding/connecting to my home network without the need to "Join other network."  Thus, I assume the problem lies with the Time Capsule.
    Any ideas?

LaPastenague, thanks for weighing in.  Didn't know that the hidden SSID capability was not IEEE standardized, and thus different devices will handle hidden SSID differently.  With my admittedly limited knowledge of how SSID/hidden SSID works, I'm still a little confused as to why my MBP would remember the generic router/gateway's hidden network, but struggle with the TC's hidden network.
To my knowledge, when an SSID is broadcast by a base station (Airport, wireless gateway, etc.), a connecting device (like a laptop, iPad, etc.) detects this broadcast--this would be a passive reception of this SSID signal.
When an SSID is hidden, the base station does not broadcast its identification.  Rather, a connecting device must transmit the name, and when the base station recognizes the broadcast, the connection is made. That's what you do when you select "Join another network" and manually enter the SSID.
The idea with OS X's Network Preferences is that these steps, whether for hidden networks or broadcast SSIDs, become automated.
Where is the potential for a different chipset between the TC and the previously used wireless router/gateway to alter this functionality?  Shouldn't the selection of an SSID by the MBP to broadcast to seek for a base station be a function solely on the MBP?  And once broadcast by the MBP, the TC should detect and reply?
Basically, the MBP can connect to the hidden TC manually just fine.  The MBP can connect to the old setup automatically just fine.  The MBP cannot connect to the TC automatically.  Aren't these automatic connection functions solely on the MBP?
I'll try un-hiding the network and re-verifying that the problem is exclusively with the hidden network.
