Time capsule issues backing up more than one MacBook Pro

Hi all,
i'm having an issue with a new 3Gb Time Capsule i've just bought and put online, I wonder if someone would be able to help please.
I am trying to back up 3 MacBooks, a 2011 macbook pro, a 2012 macbook pro and a 2012 Macbook Air, they are all running Mountain Lion.
My main macbook has worked fine and I have backed up the drive a few times without any real issue, however when I try and back up one of the other two onto the same Time Capsule, I get the error, "the backup disk image "/volumes/data/.sparsebundle" could not be accessed"
I've had a look around all the forums to see if I can see a potential problem and fix, however I can't find anywhere that says it works fine for the first backup but not for any other ones!?
The only other option I have seen is to completely remove the data backup and start again, but I don't really want to do that unless theres no other options.
Hope you can help, thanks in advance.
Oh and one other thing which i've seen, is that you can't backup more than one system unless you re-partition the Time Capsule!? Surely this isn't correct???

You do not have to partition the TC.. indeed you cannot..
But the issue with Lion or ML losing the sparsebundle is now as common as dust in a drought.
Yes, it can do a backup then fail to do another.. and there is no reason for it other than poor networking on later OS.
Reboot the TC.. and maybe the whole network. Reminds you of that initial support question for another OS.. did you turn it off and on again...??

  • How do I use my Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook Pro running 10.4.

I just installed a Time Capsule. I've extended the range with two Airport Expresses. I've connected my MacBook running 10.6.3 to the wireless network. I've connected my wife's MacBook Pro running 10.4.11 to it. I've connected my wife's 3G iPhone to it and my first gen iPhone to it and our Apple TV to it. All devices can connect to the internet. I've connected the Time Capsule to the printer and printed wirelessly from both computers.
I've backed up my MacBook and seen that the Time Machine is backing up my MacBook as it should.
How do use the Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook Pro running 10.4.11? I've tried connecting them via ethernet cable and via USB cable. In both cases the Time Capsule failed to show up as an external drive and wasn't seen by the 10.4.11 back up utility.
How do people do this? (Other than convincing their wives to let them upgrade their MacBook Pro to 10.6.3?)

That really is your best option. Sooner or later, you're going to have a problem with the "other" data on your Time Capsule, since the backups of your Mac will, eventually, fill up all the available empty space. That will, of course, limit the space available for the other backups.
There's a very cumbersome workaround in the blue box of #Q3 of the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Another is to connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, partition it if desired, and back up one Mac to it and the other to the TC's internal drive.

  • Time Capsule is backing up more than is used in my hard drive

    Hi!
I have been using TC for more than four years and my current one is my second. I am very happy with it and I think it is one of the best apple developments.
However, I have upgrade to Mavericks recently (I update from scratch) and my initial backup become longer than in previous occasions. I have erase also the time capsule because I wanted to have a fresh start everywhere.
Additionally to this longer time backing up I have come to something quite astonishing... Time Machine is backing up more GB than I am actually using in my hard drive... Can someone explain this for me?
    Thanks
PS1/ I am doing everything through wifi, and I have an airport port express in the middle.
PS2/ The speed of the back up is just fine... It is not as fast as the previous ones I have done from scratch. I am more worried about the amount of data that it backed up... Besides, in the time machine configuration I do not have all my hard drive for back up. e.g. I have a virtual machine and it is not backep up.

Some of it.. is the difference between digital bytes and binary bytes.
You are contrasting the Apple bytes and Orange bytes and worrying why they don't match up.. they will never match up. They are not the same.
If you did not realise it, apple changed the way TM reads the disks to digital bytes.. so a 2TB drive does not format to 1.8TB which is the correct size in binary bytes. (real bytes)
Your HD info on the other hand is actually measuring binary bytes.
    If you did not realise..
    Here is v5.6 airport utility
Here is v6 airport utility looking at the same drive.
    And Time Machine.
How does one version of the utility see the disk as 2TB and the other as 1.8TB.. simple.. one is real bytes and the other is the hard disk manufacturers way of making disks look bigger than they are.. ie digital bytes.
So nowadays I just ignore everything the Mac tells you about file sizes because none of it is now believable. What is truth? When you stop having standards then truth is in the eye of the advertising man and you always get the biggest number for specs and lowest number for price.. and neither are true.
if you are using digital bytes or binary bytes.. so think of it as your maths teacher taught you.. 6 apples does not equal 6 oranges.  And when you throw away the standard who knows what you are counting.
Check Pondini for info about what size a backup really is.

  • Enabling Time Maachine to back-up more than one drive

My 1TB Time Machine is setup as my Ethernet hub and it backs up my main drive flawlessly. I am not using the Airport feature. I need Time Machine to back up a second internal drive which contains all of my pictures and tunes. Apple Support could not tell me how to do this other than to refer me to two second party software products, Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner. So far, their websites have not been particularly helpful. Any suggestions?

    Hi -
I've got 4 internal drives (2 on main cable, 2 connected to a SATA card for >128 MB capacity drives). When I first set up Time Machine to backup my disks, it was planning on backing up all 4 drives, judging by the amount of GB it wanted to backup. Since I was using one of those drives as a backup already (with deva vu), I didn't want/need to back that one up. There's an option to NOT include certain drives in the Time Machine / Time Capsule backup process.
Check the amount of disk space used on all your drives and compare it to the amount that Time Machine says it plans to backup. I think by default it backs up all connected drives.
Hopefully this helps, sorry if the instructions are a little vague, I'm not at home right now, so am not entirely sure what the <exclude> button was actually called.
    Good Luck

  • Is there a way to restore more than one MacBook Pro at the same time from an image? .

I restore each MacBook Pro one at a time from an Mountain Lion image on a firewire Hard Drive but each MacBook has to be done one at a time. When I re-image the PC's here at work I'm able to Ghost as many laptops I want simultaneously.
    Thank you

They are a few different models of the MacBook Pro ranging from 15.4" i7's to 17" i7's. I would use the same models together though when imaging them just like I do with PC's. For example I would Ghost 5 Lenovo T420 Thinkpads at the same time which all share the same exact specs and config. Looking to do the same with the MBP. I have .dmg image of OSX 10.8.1 on a firewire drive which I'm using. I image all my MBP's with this drive, the only downside is I have to do each MBP one at a time.
    Thanks

  • Can you use the same Apple ID on more than one MacBook Pro for updates and applications?

We just got a few new MacBook Pro's and when I went to install updates it said I need to make an Apple ID.  Can you use the same Apple ID and email address for that Apple ID on multiple machines, or do I need them both to be unique per machine?  I'm not sure how that works when you have multiple machines.

An Apple ID is a user name you use for everything you do with Apple. Creating an account for an Apple service, such as the iTunes Store or the App Store, creates an Apple ID. Apple ID allows you to access other Apple services.   So you can use the same Apple ID for up to 10 Macs associated with it.
To create an Apple ID you need to enter  your full name and your primary email address as your Apple ID. This will be used as the contact email address for your account.

  • Startup issue when having more than one database on machine

Startup issue when having more than one database on machine:
    I’ve installed two databases.
When I shutdown one of the database and try to start it up using
    Startup pfile=’…location..’;
I get ora-12514: TNS: listener does not currently know of service rquirest in connect descriptor
when I try it again after 3 seconds, I get a new error, ora-01041: internal error. Hostdef extension doesn’t exist
Shutdown and Startup gave no problems when I had one database. Why am I getting problems when I have two databases?
I’m using: show parameter pfile|spfile; to make sure I have the right parameter locations, so the error shouldn’t be from location.
I’ve never installed two databases on one machine, so maybe I’m making a first-timer’s error.
Anyone know how to get this working, i.e. starting and stopping DB without issues?
Using oracle 11gR2 on Windows 7 64bit, all is working normal.
    Thanks,
    Ayman

Edited by: aymanzone on Jun 15, 2011 11:47 AMFirstly ... the Oracle Service for the instance should be started for the DB you are trying to connect or start.
Next ... from the command prompt:
    set oracle_sid=<Instance_Name>
    sqlplus sys as sysdba
startup pfile='location of the respective db pfile'
Now, if you want to start or connect to another DB which is on the same server (again assuming the Service is STARTED) ...
From the same command prompt session or other ....
    set oracle_sid=<Other_Instance_Name>
    sqlplus sys as sysdba
startup pfile='location of the respective db pfile'

  • Price for os x mountain lion if you have more than one macbook

Is there a different price if you're purchasing for more than one macbook to update to OS X Mountain Lion? Or is it $20 per device?

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Mountain Lion. There's a Mountain Lion Support Community where everybody has Mountain Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mountain_lion

  • ITune Album Artwork issue - There are more than one for a song

    Hi,
I've done this before....having a couple of artwork for one song. It was back when I used iTune 3 or so. Now that I'm using iTune 7. I can't seem to find a way to add more than one artwork to a song. I tried the iTune's help, which says I can just drag another artwork into the song's artwork box. But, that would replace the artwork I had earlier.
Anyone knows a way to add more than one artwork to a song? I'm using 10.4.9 if that helps.
    Thanks,
    DFguy.

    Hi guys,
Thanks for the advice. I tried both in file info and the artwork box (while playing the file) and they both work. I sware to god that they both did NOT work before. That's why I had to post this stupid questions. I don't know why it didn't work before. Maybe because I selected the artwork that's already there? Anyway, now that this issue is solved, I'm very happy!
    Thanks again,
    DFguy.

  • HT3275 Can Time Machine back up more than one computer without overwriting one of the backups?

I was using Time Machine to back up files from my G5 onto an external drive. I now want to use the same drive to back up my laptop with Time Machine. If I set it up for that, will it overwrite the backup files from the G5?

If I set it up for that, will it overwrite the backup files from the G5?
No, Time Machine will create a new backup file for the laptop and automatically keep backups separate for the G5 and the laptop.
This assumes that you still have plenty of space on the external hard drive to backup the laptop.

  • Time Machine Backups.backupdb folder more than one directory for the same machine

Hi I am trouble shooting a Time Machine issue for somebody. They have multiple backup directories for the same machince in the Backups.backupdb folder. This causing the directory that is being used to have a restricted amount of space to use, therefore the backup timeline is only lasting for one month where oldest backups are being deleted. On top of this I notice that the options to delete individual backups or all of them is not available. I read that this can happen where there is duplication in backups.
Any suggestions in how to remove backups that are redundant and select the correct one to keep appreciated. And...suggestions on why this may have happpened. One reason could be that when the Mac was originaly bought, two portable iomega drive were purchaed one to use at a main residence and the other at a country home. Each disk may have been used at different times for Time Machine.

    Start with Pondini's TM FAQs.

  • Using TM to back Up More than One Drive

I just bought a 500 Gb external drive. I want to use it to do digital audio because my MacBook Pro 2 Ghz Intel Core Duo has only a 100 Gb internal drive. So I plan to continue using the internal drive for most things, but start placing audio files on the external.
My TM backups currently go to a 230 Gb external drive, adn I want to continue to use this backup drive. I know that TM backs up my 100 Gb internal drive by default. But I can't tell whether TM will also back up the files on the external drive, too. Both externals are daisy chained via Firewire. My thinking was that if TM sees all 3 drives, I can back up both the 100 Gb internal plus up to 200 Gbs from the 500 Gb drive -- onto the 230 Gb backup drive.
    Rick

    rikbarry,
I am a life long Apple/Mac guy and you could never get me to trade to a PC. The only dealings with PCs I've had is at work.
I tried using TM because I am a loyal faithful Mac person. However, after using it for a couple of months, I weighed the pros and cons of using it against two programs I used prior to TM - Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner. And you know what, Super Duper and CCC just gave me what I wanted better, faster and with less hassle.
Super Duper wasn't compatible with Leopard but has since had an update which now makes it compatible with Leopard.
Both SD and CCC can be scheduled to be run any time you want, produces a bootable clone without having to have to use the Leopard install disk, and only updates files that have changed since last backup. You don't have to worry about the disk filling up and getting backup failures like I did with TM. And it works. After using a Mac since 1988, I just had my first hardware failure (the logic board on my G5). I took my CCC cloned copy on my backup FireWire 800 drive, plugged it into my MacBook Pro while my G5 was at the Apple Store getting repaired courtesy of my Apple Care program and it was as if my G5 was still there humming away. Within five days, I had my G5 returned repaired, plugged my backup drive into the G5, cloned the cloned back to my G5 HD and now I'm writing this from my G5.
