Time Capsule iTunes AppleTV

If I purchase a Time Capsule, it is to be a repository for movies & music. Not interested in backing up the computers. Currently all music is stored on my Mac Pro. My Wife has a iPhone & iPod, she has to use my Mac Pro to load music on to both of Her devices. She has Her own Mac Book, if I move all music on to the Time Capsule, will she be able to have direct access to all music, create her own playlist, etc., without my Mac Pro running iTunes? Will I be able to have access to all of the music as well? I have read about some NAS devices that have iTunes Server software, will this be on the Time Capsule? What actually is iTunes Server software?
I currently stream music from my Mac Pro to the AppleTV. What is the path of the music using the Time Capsule to stream music to the AppleTV? I know that I have to have iTunes running on my Mac Pro to stream to the AppleTV. I guess I am trying to find out if there will be a lag if I set it up this way. Does the music go to my Mac Pro from the Time Capsule and then on to the AppleTV?
Any insight and explanations would be greatly appreciated.

My solution has been to do this:
1) Get the library on one account perfectly organized with the "iTunes Music location" in the Advance setting pane directed toward a folder on your external drive/TC.
2) Go to that user account's music folder and drag the "iTunes library," "iTunes Music library.xml", and "Album Artwork" files to the networked external drive/TC.
3) Create an alias for each of these items on the external drive (click the file and File>Make Alias or cmd+L).
4) Now go to every user account (including the original) and delete the original of these files.
5) Drag and drop the aliases into the Music>iTunes folders and ...
6) MOST IMPORTANTLY: DELETE the 'alias' at the end of the file name. You must do this because when iTunes opens it will look for a file named "iTunes library". It can follow the alias, but will reject it if it has 'alias' in the file name.
You will probably need to do this every time iTunes updates. Make sure you update all users iTunes at the same time. Do not import files from multiple accounts at the same time.

So, I have just about had it. For nine days now,  I have valiantly tried to move my library to an external drive. At first, I attempted to move it to my 2TB Time capsule. iTunes didn't like its new home though and moved home without telling me. So then there were two libraries. I meshed them back together reluctantly and iTunes in a silent revolt, absolutely refused to use its own 'Keep Library Organized' criteria and may as well have thrown my music against the wall. Seriously, my 5 year old nephew has his computer files better managed. Then I bought a 3TB Time Capsule and you may ask yourself why??? Well, iTunes doubled in size- although when I ran apps that are designed to find duplicate iTunes files, it deleted the music I actually bought from iTunes. So then I watched as iTunes got it back. How you ask; I run a MacBook Air, iMac and Mac mini in my house - as soon as one powered up it hit the net like a sailor on leave and re-downloaded it all without abandon. I tried to keep the libraries separate, no success there. I tried to keep them unified; iTunes response was to ask me if I wanted to join iTunes Match every time I logged on to my computer and on any computer - my iTunes match song number has been as high as 24,367 and as low as 11,112. And I can't simply refuse iTunes. No one refuses iTunes. Refusal to allow iTunes Match to run through all 24000 songs again was to revoke my rights to the songs that were once part of my library. If I took a long time to decide or was visibly impatient while iTunes did its little 3 hour scan it would arbitrarily decide that music I bought from iTunes was ineligible for iTunes Match. How could that possibly be??? I am missing music, or at least iTunes tells me so by showing me that lovely exclamation point. I have tried backing up my computer to do a full system restore and start all over. Time Capsule claims I have 979 GB of data and takes its sweet time to even back up one gig (about 18 minutes) even though I can transfer files to my Time Capsule at about 1 GB every 40 seconds. I guess though performing back-ups are somewhat like government jobs; it will get done, when it gets done. The back up requirement of 979 GB is surprising though, my Mac claims that I currently occupy just about 25% of my 2TB drive. The discrepancy, who knows, but I think the solution lies somewhere in iTunes. But maybe iPhoto. But that is for another time.

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move.  Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way.  Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.

  • Time Capsule - iTunes Library Sync

Does anybody know how can I sync my iTunes library with my Time Capsule?
I made a backup of my iTunes library by copying "iTunes File" to my Time Capsule. Now, every time I make a new purchase from iTunes, I have to add it manually to the Time Capsule "iTunes File". Is there a way that this can be done automatically?
    Thanks!

I would like to backup my iTunes library in one of my Time Capsules because the computer that has all the music has a small HD (only 80GB).
I'm still not sure what you're trying to do.  If you want to back up your iTunes library, just let Time Machine do that.  That way you won't have to copy anything manually.  At the same time, you should delete from the Time Capsule disk any file that you copied there manually.  It's not good to use any disk volume where Time Machine stores its backups for other purposes.  By design, Time Machine will eventually consume all available space no its output volume, which will cause trouble for the other files.
On the other hand, if the computer with the music doesn't have enough space, then you should either replace that drive with a larger one or move the music (not "back it up") to another volume.
The best way to retrieve a file from a Time Machine backup is with the Time Machine application.  If you haven't deleted it, you'll find it in the Dock.  You can also invoke the "Enter Time Machine" option from the Time Machine icon in the menu bar.

  • Can you watch videos/listen to music from Tim Capsule through appletv?

Would like to use Time Capsule to save movies and play them back through my appletv.  Can anyone let me know if this is possible?  Thanks.

On a standard ATV no, you cannot easily do it because of the link to itunes.. that means itunes has to have its main library on the TC and that is playing with fire.. The TC has no backup and no ability to stream.. it has no media servers. If you have a JB ATV (so not the newest one) and it can find and play files, yes, it would be possible. But again, as a storage location, you need to understand a failed TC is a locked up device.. where Apple will not recover your files, and so you will need to do manual backups to another drive anyway.

  • Time Capsule & iTunes

Hi, I just purchased a 2TB time capsule and a MB Air and I am having some issues. I plan on using the TC as backup and also wanted to park my music there to share with the rest of the family since I can not host the files on my 128gb drive
The backup up is slowww but I expected that from reading different posts but honestly I didn't think it would take 7 hours (801.11n) on a brand new empty laptop. I am hoping that now that it has backed up once it will speed up. My problem is with my music. I copied over all of my files (I will not say how long that took except to say that I have been on shorter camping trips) and then went to my new mac and pointed the library to that folder and then added the files. The airport read time was so slow that iTunes locked up after about 5 minutes. I figured it might be the new mac so I tried a windows machine (which was a direct wired connection to the TC) and an old macbook and all had the same issue. If I can't even grab the meta data from the songs how in the world can I read the song file during play back?
I have tried rebooting, hard and soft, I have reformatted the drive and put a small amount of songs back (about 25GB) and the same thing happens. So my questions are as follows. Is the TC defective? If not what is the point.. not to be snotty but I can't imagine how a system restore would work, it would take a week. I am thinking about returning it and getting an airport extreme and an external hard drive to attach to it. Would this be faster? I really like the wireless portion I just don't think I can live with these storage speeds.
    Thanks for any advice!

If you hold down an "option" key while you pull down the Wi-Fi/AirPort menu bar item, what value do you see for "RSSI"?
By the way, it's not a good idea to use the same disk for Time Machine backups and for other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all available space on its output disk, which will cause problems for other uses.

  • Best way to share Time Capsule iTunes folder between multiple PC's & users?

We are happily using a 2T Time Capsule and Genie Timeline to back up computer files. However, our main iTunes computer is a laptop which is quickly running out of disk space. So we hope to share an iTunes directory on the Time Capsule between two pc's with multiple users.
Q#1) Does each windows user need to connect as the same Time Capsule user? Or is there a way to share a folder amongst several Time Capsule users? (We have several Time Capsule users set up, but I don't know how to configure it so one can see files created by another.)
Q#2) Once the shared directory is established and everyone can see it from both computers, is this the correct procedure:
    a) On the main iTunes pc, change the iTunes Media Folder to the shared Time Capsule folder
    b) Consolidate the library
    c) Import music files from the other pc as necessary. (Can we do this? Some are protected aac files.)
    d) Change the iTunes Media Folder on the second pc to the shared Time Capsule folder. (How do you grant permission for the other pc to use the shared iTunes Media Folder?)
Apologies if I all this has been answered already. I was unable to find it in my searches.

  • Time Capsule, iTunes, iPhone.. syncing.. Help!

    Hello everyone
    I need help.. (of course!)
I just moved to Mac and I'm not done with syncing, iTunes library, etc.
    What I have:
MBA - Macbook Air 1.6 120GB Hard Drive
    TC - Time Capsule 500GB
    iPhone 3G 16GB
    iPod Shuffle 2GB
    iPod Classic 80GB
    Portable HD Western Digital 320GB
First of all, when I had my Windows based PC I was just syncing the iPhone, leaving the library on the external and every time I wanted to sync I had to plug in before doing.
    What I want:
Use the TC as main backup and sync device and get rid of the External 320GB HD. I need to sync iPhone daily at the office and the TC is at Home, but if I try to sync at the office it won't open the iTunes, sync the library in in the TC at home. My need is to sync everything but music, that takes too much space in my MBA. I just want to be free to open iTunes wherever I am and sync without touching the music and playlists and when I'm home I can sync everything.
    Is that possible?
Also, I read that my library and files in TC won't be backed up using Time Machine. Is there a solution for that, to have everything backed up together?
    Thanks!
    Ricardo Pereira

Your iPhone can only be "synced" with one computer at a time. Regardless of authorization for iTunes content.
You need to transfer ALL content from the old computer to the new. Then, you can choose to sync the iPhone by clicking on it in the sidebar, and across the top going through the Summary, Info, Music, Movies, Photos, Apps etc tabs, and checking the boxes to turn ON syncing to this new computer. It should give you a message each time you do this that says that you will wipe off existing content and then add new content that came from THIS computer instead.
Simply de-authorizing the old computer will not solve your problem- that just tells Apple that you no longer allow the computer to play the content you purchased FROM iTunes. It does not affect syncing other than the transferrence of iTunes store purchases from the device they were bought on to the other device.

  • Time capsule - itunes - windows

got the airport extreme to utilize the 500Gb of space for my music and video. i have an HP notebook running Vista 64. i have my itunes downloads going directly to the airport. the problem i am running into is whenever i am downloading my connection will drop and then subsequently my itunes will refresh to my c: drive.
    1. how can i prevent the drops? it happens quite frequently especially when downloading but am able to reconnect no problem.
    2. any solution on my refreshing of itunes.

    Hello Jolly,
Thank you for the quick reply.
It being an "air disk" should not affect me too much as i will only be using the Itunes to sync my Ipod and not to play tunes. I see you can tell the TC to open in dock on boot also.
I was more worried about compatibility with Windows as i would like both laptops to be able to access the library for syncing.
Do you know of any issues syncing windows via homeshare/Time Capsule?

  • Time Capsule/Itunes Library

I may have a really stupid question but I bought the Time Capsule specifically to back up my itunes library. I have 10,000+ songs I am afraid to lose. Does TimeCapsule do this back up as part of its routine backups daily?

Unless you excluded it in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, yes.

  • Better to create or extend my existing network? (Time Capsule, Express, AppleTV with wireless modem internet)

We have Optus ADSL broadband (Australia) running wireless via a 'Sagemcom F@ST 3864 Optus' modem. We have an Airport Time Capsule (for backup) and an Airport Express (for music connection) and Apple TV.
I currently have the Time Capsule (Express & TV) set up as their own network, sharing the internet from the Optus wireless network. Is creating a new network like this the best scenario? Or is it better to extend the existing Optus wireless network? Besides extension for range/reception, does either option have particular benefits over the other?
Other than internet, we just stream music/movies from laptops & phones to speakers/TV, so the thinking behind creating a new network rather than extending, was based on the assumption that the Time Capsule may be better at data transfer than the modem?
    Any thoughts would be great!

Is creating a new network like this the best scenario? Or is it better to extend the existing Optus wireless network? Besides extension for range/reception, does either option have particular benefits over the other?
I would say it is about 50-50.. 6 of one .. half a dozen of the other.
Any scenario you dream up has a set of good points and bad points.
    So some factors.
    1. I presume you have the TC plugged by ethernet into the Sagem modem.. bridged and creating its own network.. using two different network names keeps the local connection load contained which is good thing.
Wireless is fundamentally poor. It has limits on being only able to handle a single client at a time.. so time slicing between all the clients. plus it is half duplex.. which is simply it can either transmit or receive not both.
In comparison, Ethernet via modern switches.. can have multiple computers talking to each other at once and can both tx and rx, ie full duplex. So using extend wireless is very bad. It means wireless is much slower as each packet is double handled.
Using multiple APs connected back by ethernet to a main router is definitely the right way to go. They can be in roaming or setup with completely different names.. that is almost irrelevant. It is easier though to manage when you do the naming and setup so you specifically allocate load.
For example.. if the TC is doing backups from TM on the computers and you start having streaming issues with the Apple TV, split the load, by naming the 2.4ghz and 5ghz differently in the TC.. and force backups to 5ghz and streaming to 2.4ghz (or visa versa depending on range issues etc.).
    2. Network wise different AP should all live happily together in one happy family. The reality is that more equipment leads to more issues. I have been hitting a few issues lately with wireless routers exactly in your setup being unavailable to the network, if a computer happens to be connected to the wrong router.
For example a computer connected to the Sagem, whether by wireless or ethernet, may have issues backing up to the TC. It shouldn't but it does. I am seeing Mavericks in particular giving strife this way.
Someone recently posted a very helpful article on why this is happening.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5863043?tstart=0
For most people in a home network you do not want the hassle of running a server. But you can see that sometimes things start getting complicated.
Best principle is hope for the best.. set it up as per what you have done.. if it bombs or is unstable.. work back through the issues.. there are some alternative configurations which are more complicated.. eg running the TC with static IP, that seems to alleviate some of the bugs.
    3. What works is best. Whatever the theory.. try a few setups.. what you setup that works well for you is the best even if the theory says no.. that is bad.
eg One post a person used roaming network with all AP's fixed to the same channel, so the idevices would roam properly. This is wrong.. but works.. normal roaming network laptops seem to be able to roam well but idevices do not. Pick what works.

You cannot if the Samsung needs DLNA server.. which is what I would expect.. Apple stuff does not support DLNA.. because it is Apple.. and therefore different.
How can I play movies from my TimeCapsule on my Samsung Smart TV with my Mede8er400
I can see the apple TV on my TV screen but can't get into the TC with my films on it.
Apple TV is not a player.. it is kind of an intermediary device.. it requires itunes running on a computer to send or stream stuff to it.. if you had your itunes library on the TC.. the computer can then stream it to the ATV and thus onto your TV..
TC is a dumb as a board storage device.. no media players.. no players of any kind media or otherwise.. just dumb storage space.
Your Mede8er 400 might be able to play files.. what formats does it play??
Have you copied files to the TC that it can read?
Have you setup the TC with full smb compliant names.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Have you setup the workgroup name as WORKGROUP and turned on the guest account to full read and write.. it might work.
Your ATV should be able to work from itunes on the windows computer and stream that to the TV.

  • ITunes sometimes won't see media on my time capsule, and I have to remind it where it is !!

    Hello,
I use a MacBook Pro to run iTunes, and my media sits in two locations.
1     Music, books, Apps etc are locally on the MacBook
2     Movies and TV Shows are on my Time capsule.
iTunes never has a problem with finding local hard drive content, however it only seems to find 50% of the time capsule media.
I get the apostrophe that suggests iTunes cannot find it, however if I select "get info" it knows where it is. (and will work fine from there)
It has become very frustrating, as it is never the same files it cant find, always different !!
When speaking to Apple (in-store) he was convinced it was a network speed issue related to the time capsule, however after speaking to Apple Care, they say it is not a recognised configuration (to store files away from the local Mac) and hence wont help me !!
Im convinced I cannot be the only one with this issue as we download more and more content our local hard drives are just not big enough to cope.
In summary, I just want to open iTunes and all my content be visible !!
    Thanks

Your Time Capsule is on and running well before starting iTunes?
Although I think the AC person was going a bit by the book in the configuration comment, the person does have a point and it is not recommended you keep content other than backup files on a Time Capsule.  If for no other reason you do not have a backup for your content you are keeping there.
Since you are saying this is happening with different files each time, but iTunes is able to find them when you get info on the file, I think it could well be a network issue and because you are using your Time Capsule for multiple purposes which includes large files.  When you are starting iTunes it is trying to do something with the files and there isn't enough capacity for iTunes to do it and it is reporting files as missing.  When you do it more leisurely one-by-ne by getting info it is having time to find them and is reporting them as okay.  Which files this happens with may just be am atter of slight differences in what is happening each time you start iTunes and your network drive.

  • Problems with iTunes syncing iPhotos on Time Capsule after Mavericks update?

    Hello all,
I currently have all my Music/Movies/TV Shows/Photos stored on my Time Capsule and have been using iTunes and iPhoto to retreive files from it with no problems until I recently upgraded to Mavericks.
Couple of days ago, I updated to Mavericks, downloaded the latest version of iPhoto and iTunes. Yet once I've done so I could no longer sync photos to my iPhone, iPad or even see my photos on my Apple TV. I could however see the Music other Media. It took iTunes abnormally longer time to retrieve the data from the network and once it did and tried to sync them with the phone it just hung and crashed.
    I tried doing the following:
Deleting the iPod, Apple TV cache from the iPhoto library.
Fixed iPhoto Permissions and rebuilt the whole of the iPhoto library.
Deleted my iTunes library and rebuilt it from scratch.
All that did not work. The only thing that did however, was taking the photos from the Time Capsule and back to my computer. That seemed to fix things and I was able to make everything work again.
What I am asking is: Is anyone else having the same problem? Is this an OS bug that will be addressed? or is there anyway I could fix this on my own? I only own a Macbook Air and the 15GB of photos I have already take a huge chunk out of the 59GB I have available on my laptop. Thanks.

I have a new Time Capsule (the tall version), but no Mavericks yet (I have OSX 10.8.5) and latest iTunes and Time Capsule sw. I have pictures and iTunes library on the Time Capsule.
iTunes messes a lot with synching pictures and music.
I have tried to delete the picture cache on the Capsule, but that only helped once. Next time it looked over the pictures for a long time, but synched none. With music I get an error message that it's wrong format (it isn't, the file is fine, I can see it) - and since next time that song will/might come in, but some next song won't. Then it could gray out some music on iPad (running iOS 6.1.3), some times it actually plays grayed out music, some times it doesn't.
But on my Mac Mini (which runs iTunes, all year long), all is fine, so the music exists fine! Synching looks very broken to me! This happened when my wide Time Capule's disk broke and I had to recover the iTunes library from a backup.
I'd rather not move all of this onto the MacBook, as I want anyone to be able to synch and play music wouthot having to relate to some laptop.

  • Use time capsule for iTunes library

I would like to use my new time capsule as the location for my iTunes library. How do I go about doing that? Currently my iTunes library is on my MacBook Pro.

The Time Capsule was designed for your backups, not for everyday or "original" copies of files or folders. It is not a media server.
The smart move would be to get another hard drive and connect it to your Mac. Move the iTunes library to that hard drive.
Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive to the Time Capsule.
iTunes will run just as fast as if it were on your Mac.....and more importantly....you will have backups for both your Mac and the important data on the hard drive on the Time Capsule.
Note that having the "key" will not help a bit if you are trying to connect a wireless device that does not want to see apostrophes, dollar signs, asterisks, and any other special character.
Change the name of your wireless network to something that uses only normal letters and numbers, with no spaces. Do not exceed 20 characters.
    Same rule for password.
