Time Capsule keeps going and going and going
Hello all;
Wondering if anyone can give me a readers digest version of how TC is supposed to work.
My backups area so random it is a bit confusing.
Some days they last for a minute (backing up kb of kb) and today it has been backing up for an hour (backing up mb of mb). And other days it backs up for 6-7 hours (mb of gb)
I understand that the more that is added or deleted should require more backup but logically if you are not on the the comp there would be less to backup so having trouble figuring out why it just goes and goes.

Ah, yes, that does have an effect. See #25 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Capsule+ forum).
What was probably happening was, you have a large home folder, and you deleted something fairly substantial. When you logged-out, the sparse bundle containing your encrypted home folder was "compacted", then the entire folder was backed up (per the blue box in #25).
If the problem persists, try the things in my previous post.

I keep getting 'an unexpected error occurred. Try again.' error message when trying to reconnect to my AirPort Time Capsule. I have soft and hard reset and, eventually, factory reset the device. What do I do to correct the error?

The light on my time capsule keeps blinking yellow. ! mark in toolbar time capsule and it says it was unable to finish backup because back up disk couldn't be found but it also says last back up was successful.

Orange and green flashing is unfortunately a failure indication.

Using Time Capsule to Wirelessly Receive Internet and then Extend Network via Ethernet
Hello,
Our modem/router combo is located downstairs, and my computer that i want to get online is upstairs. I cannot get a ethernet from the modem to my computer to access the internet, so I wanted to try to use my Time Capsule to help me get online upstairs (not sure if this is possible...)
My idea was to have the Time Capsule receive the wireless signal and then connect the computer to the Time Capsule through an ethernet so that I may get the computer online. Essentially wireless connection in, wired connection out.
I've been playing around with the device for a while now, and can't seem to make this work. Has anyone used the Time Capsule in this fashion? Is it even possible? If not, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my computer online?

The Apple solution might well need Two devices to extend range.
You would retain your ISP router/modem however would go into settings and TURN OFF wireless on that device - you can do this in the Java Web based control panels on most routers.
Now you sling the Ethernet cable between that router and a purchased Time Capsule device locally and set this up to create a new local Wifi network (Replacing that of the ISP supplied router) . Being a dual band device and being able to broadcast both over 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz frequency base bands simultaneously you could well see improved performance and range straight away.
However if not then you are going to need a further device an Airport Express set up in bridged mode somewhere between the Time Capsule and your upstairs rooms. Your may have to try various power points and locations to get coverage required.
Further Airport Express devices can be added in bridged mode as required to cover blind spots, however remember each additional device degrades the overall network performance somewhat.
Again this will get quite costly. -

What generation is your neighbour's and what generation is yours??
Sometimes the changes in the TC and firmware can make wireless fail.. also location is important.. the location of your neighbours might be better than yours.. his also might interfere with yours.. set a fixed channel and try the various channels.

Sure, but you need to work out how the network is going to work.. if you are still picking up network from wireless.. then set static ip for the TC in a different IP range.. set no gateway (router ip) or dns and it will work just fine. -

This type of setup is not officially supported by Apple.
It might be possible to configure the Time Capsule this way, but please take a minute to consider a few things that you may not have thought about, as this is...frankly....the worst possible way that you could configure the Time Capsule.
Wireless backups will take twice as long as normal wireless. Why? The signal must make a "double hop".
Hop "one" would be from your Mac to the wireless router, then the signal must make hop "two" to get back to the Time Capsule.
In addition to doubling the time for backups to occur, this doubles the chances for an error to occur during a backup.
The Ethernet ports are not enabled at all on the Time Capsule when it is configured this way, so backup over much faster Ethernet is not possible.
The USB port is enabled, so assuming that the printer is compatible, it could be configured to connect that way. Keep in mind that only printing is supported. If you have an All-in-One device, advanced functions like scan, copy, maintenenance will not be supported.
So, do you really want to try this? There are no guarantees here that things will work at all. -

How do I use my Time Capsule as a router?
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/router to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue to follow the guided setup to configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network". Select the "Bridge Mode" option when it appears during the setup. (AirPort Utility will normally do this for you)

We prefer not to guess at things, but since we do not know the make and model number of your modem/router, and this is an Apple support area, we have little choice.
In general, you would enter the default IP address of the device into your browser to bring up the configuration pages (check your documentatio on the modem/router for this information, or it may be on the back or bottom of the device. An example of a default IP address is something like 192.168.1.254
There will be a wireless settings page that will allow you turn off the wireless function of the device.
If you acquired the modem/router from your service provider, they should be able to tell you how to do this as well, or if you check the manufacturer's website, they will likely have a support area for questions like this.

You will need to log on to the Time Capsule wireless network from each device and enter the password to connect. Most computers will "remember" the setting so that you do not have to enter the password each time that you connect. -

Actually, there is a way to limit the amount of space Time Machine uses for backup so that it won't eat up all your disk space...for example, I have mine set to only use 65GB, and then it starts to overwrite older backups...Google it for more info. To begin with, I deleted my Sparse Disk Image Bundle from Time Capsule, and used Disk Utility to create a Sparse Disk Image Bundle (turn off backups first!!!) with a capacity of 65GB in HFS Journaled, Case Sensitive...The Image must be named as follows "Full Computer Name_Ethernet MAC Address" (The ethernet MAC address is used even if you plan to solely use wifi for backups). for example, my Sparse Disk Image Bundle name is "Ahmad Atiya's MacBook Pro_00254b9d8f72.sparsebundle" Move this image to your time capsule's main directory (if you didn't create it there to begin with). Go to your Time Machine preferences, turn it on, and set it to use your Time Capsule. It should start using the image you created. If you click "get info" on the disk image, it'll show a capacity of whatever you created.

Yes, but if you move the "original" data on your iMac to the Time Capsule....then the "original" data is now on the Time Capsule disk.
When...not if...the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you have no backups for this data.
Perhaps a much safer plan might be to add an external hard drive attached directly to your iMac. Then, move the data to that drive from the iMac.
Now, Time Machine will back up both your iMac and the external hard drive so you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another. Would that plan work for you? -
I want to use the Apple Time Capsule as an external drive and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs. Can I do that? The reason I ask is that my Time Machine utility cannot find the TIme Capsule - it only shows me the Airport Extreme, even when I "Rescan". SO I am unable to use the Time Capsule.
You will need to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds, then give it another minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule, and click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab located below the row of icons to assign a name to the Time Capsule, a device password, and adjust Time Zone settings.
Next, click the Wireless tab located to the right of the Time Capsule tab
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right to save the settings and allow 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.

Yes, you simply bridge the TC..
Just google for it as we have posted the instructions endlessly.
The one trick that might be necessary is to ensure the TC is on a different IP range to the main broadband connection.
And make sure the gateway and dns do not cause issues.. so it is generally better to set static ip on the TC and the computer.
None of it is hard so ask for specific instructions if you get to the point. -
I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?
You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility. -

You cannot backup network drives with Time Machine.
You can simply setup the TC in the network.. it is a shared drive. -
My 2 TB Time Capsule’s memory is full because it will notautomatically delete old files as it is supposed to, so it is giving me zerobackup of my two computers now. How can this be fixed so my Time Capsule deletes the old data and savesthe new?
Neither my local computer consultant nor I have been ableto change any of the settings in Time Machine to correct this problem. Most likely, there just isn't room. Time Machine may be trying to do a very large (or full) backup of one or both Macs, and can't. Since it won't ever delete the most recent backup, there has to be enough room for one full backup plus whatever it's trying to back up now, plus 20% (for workspace).

While healing or erasing in Photoshop CS4, often it doesn't affect the area being worked, but smears or erases a different part of the photo. If I am zoomed in and don't notice the problem, it can ruin the photo and cause me to have to start over.
