Time capsule LAN ports

Hi,
I have just purchased a TC that was only 4 months old so that I could place this in my tv cabinet and use the LAN ports to connect to my Panasonic TV and paid tv box when they come in and install this.
I have connected this to my home network via wifi and it is currently performing the 1st back up ( 3 days until its finished) yet when I try and connect my tv is LAN it is not working. I have been reading that these ports are disabled when the TC is connected via wifi. Is this true? Surely Apple is not this blind to do this?
Had I known this would not work I would have not bought the item. I can not return this as it was bought off eBay.
Surely there has to be a way that I can get this to work. Moving my modem is not possible. The only other solution I can think off is running a LAN cable from my modem, through the roof and then plug this into the TC.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is exactly how the TC works.. put it in join wireless and the ethernet ports get turned off..
The only way to keep it working is WDS.. that will reduce speed to G wireless but AFAIK the ethernet ports still work. It is an issue though because WDS doesn't work across products from all brands and the security might also drop back to wep.. so terrible.
Ethernet is by far the best way to do it..
But EOP adapters work well for many people.

  • Time Capsule Gigabit Ports operating at 100 Mbps (no 1000 Mbps speed)

    Hello!
I'm a Verizon Fios user and recently upgraded to Quantum (150 Mbps up/65 down).
    My network:
Verizon modem/router with gigabit Ethernet wired to WAN port on TC (3rd Gen).
Multiple AEX extending the network throughout the house
VZ router is the DHCP controller, TC set to bridge mode
For some reason, the port controller on the VZ router is only working at 100 Mbps for whatever port is connected to the TC. I'm certain my TC has gigabit ports (as advertised--they all do, right?) and therefore can't figure out why I can't get the two pieces to operate at gigabit speed (for reference, the VZ modem has indicator lights for 10/100/1000 speeds and the same information is displayed in the router settings).
The VZ configuration page allows me to manually select port speeds (10 half/full duplex, 100 half/full, 1000 full) or allow it to AUTO select. On auto, the port reports 100 Mbps full duplex with the TC. I tried manually selecting 1000 full duplex, at which point the port goes dark (for lack of a better term--no lights, no activity between the two).
I'm certain the gigabit functionality exists on the VZ router side: if I plug in my early 2011 MB Pro directly to the port, I get gigabit speeds. I've also tried wiring from VZ router to TC LAN port, with the same result.
Definitely frustrating: my wired connections are artificially reducing throughput for wireless! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated: is there a setting I'm missing in Airport Utility?
    Thanks!!

    Hi Gus
Let me just clarify the above statement.. wiring VZ to the TC LAN port got the same result as the WAN port.. that is how I am guessing you mean it. Not the same result as the MBP.. which worked fine.. !!
I do have an answer to slow ethernet speed but it is not a setting in the TC.. TC lacks most settings or control.. although I would do a factory reset just to be sure. You can also run it in double NAT for a test. The WAN port does have speed controls.. but you can only get to them from v5 utility..
That would be worthwhile to check.. I know you don't want double NAT but it is just to see what happens.
Otherwise your Gen3 A1355 is suffering capacitor deterioration on the 1.8v line.
I did fix it on one TC.. it is a rare problem. Normally the caps just die.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/new-issue-with-a1355-gen-3-tc
I fixed it by soldering a standard low ESR capacitor to the supply..
Test the TC cold, as the ethernet seemed to work ok until it heated up.
    Good luck with that one.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Time capsule ftp port forwarding

    Hi.
Just got a new time capsule and have discovered that the connection speed to my ftp server is MUCH slower.
I've tried playing around with port forwarding but haven't managed to get it sorted out.
I did discover during my attempts that switching the TC over to bridge mode fixed everything. Didn't want that security setup though!
Current setup is modem (bridge mode) > ethernet > time capsule (wirelessly routing via nat-dhcp)
I'm not quite sure what i'm doing with the port forwarding settings...i've tried changing the dhcp mode to manual on my mac
i've also added various ports (21,22,80, 115) to the time capsules' port settings
according to http://www.yougetsignal.com the only open port is 21
    any tips?? very grateful!

You need to look carefully at how ftp gets through NAT.. and if the ftp client can open ports itself .. which way are you going, out or in?
Is the client active or passive ftp? You think ftp is this simple protocol but there are variations and some handle NAT better than others.. it is also going to need specific ports opened higher up the range.
Some clients allow you to dictate the port and others open ports at random.
    See the info here.

  • Backup HD connected to Time Capsule USB port

Hi guys. When I connect an external HD to the USB port of my Time Capsule, will that HD automatically be backed up to the Time Capsule by Time Machine? Bit of a noob question, sorry, but I can't find it covered anywhere.

  • Can I move my USB external to the Time Capsule USB port and still see my backup?

After much difficulty getting Time Machine backups to work on my new 13" MBPro, after updating to 10.7.2, I've finally prevailed with help of the great Pondini. (You are a great humanitarian sir!)
Of course I'd now like to put that new 3 TB seagate goflex onto the Time Capsule, share it with the wired in iMac, and WiFi around the house with the MBPro.
But now I'm afraid to connect it to the Time Capsule's USB, lest my backup be spotlitin' everybody's permissions from years ago and telling my Lion not to start, or stop, or go.
Truth is- after 3 days of sorting it out (in the end not really knowing how I did), I'm telling people to wait for 10.7.x to update
    (x = "when I tell you it's cool").
This is the first time in a while that I've been skittish about "recovering" from an update. 10.7.2 is a huge change that I wasn't ready for.
If I plug this drive into the TC and Time Machine goes crazy again I'll probably throw it out the window.
So has anyone made a TM backup with a big USB drive connnected to the MBPro port, and then moved said drive to the Time Capsule's USB port? And then still be able to access the backup through Time Machine?
    Hmmmmm?

I wanted to plug the wifi on the time capsule and send the wifi signal only from the time capsule and have it fully operating.
    Is it possible?
Not without ethernet connection to the 4G router.. you cannot use the 4G say into the USB of the TC.. there are no drivers for that. And you cannot do any other type of connection.. except ethernet.. so not with your current equipment..
Scrap the current 4g router and buy something with ethernet, that either takes the 4g modem or the sim having a built in modem.

  • AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule dumb port placement

Ok so I have a few of the new Airports and Time Capsules, the stacking arrangement on the Ethernet ports is just about the dumbest thing I have seen in a long time. For a company that prides itself in user experience design and engineering, you lost it on this one.
The ports are maybe a centimeter apart which makes in near impossible, unless you are an infant or use a tool, to disconnect the cables of any of the other ports except the top one. So for example if I have to disconnect bottom port, I either have to get a stick or a pencil or find an infant that has the dexterity needed (and the appropriate working papers) to disconnect the lower ports or I have to disconnect the top, then the middle then the bottom port.
    So dumb....
Next there are no lights on the front that give the status of the ports. Maybe there is a big trend moving away from this but it would be AWESOME in my book if you had port status lights on the front.
Lastly the **** box! OK next time make the bottom of the box the "next" and the top large portion of the box fit inside it. Ever try and get the box apart after you have removed the device and put the box back together. I swear to god there is a cat in there and I can't tell if it is dead or alive and I can't get the box open to see.
Lastly *** is with that app? It was better in the previous version, maybe 5.n?

  • Time capsule forward port 5001

I use a sling box to access my sat tv from the internet. it requires that I open port 5001 to allow outside access. How do I do that on a time capsule. I've found where i think it is, but it seems confusing, a little guidance?

  • Time Capsule + DG834G Port Restricted

    Hi,
When I go on the connection doctor in iChat it says that my router is 'Port Restricted'. I am using a Netgear DG834G and Time Capsule so how would I get it to stop saying it? I would have thought it wouldn't say that as I'm using a Time Capsule, although maybe it's because I have it in bridge mode with the DG834G? If so, I've already tried to use it not in bridge mode and it didn't work, unless there's another way of doing it?
    Thanks

Thanks so much for suggesting those things, I hadn't stopped the firewall on the DG834G, but when I did iChat reported it as 'Full Cone' with a green status and also Back to My Mac had a green status too which it hasn't had before!
I did a port scan and realised that even though the firewall on the DG834G is stopped, the Time Capsule firewall is on instead. I always thought that if the two were connected on 'bridge mode' then Time Capsule didn't have a firewall on, because I didn't see any settings for it on the Airport Utility. So thanks for that because it's now all working!

  • Setting up a Time Capsule with port forwarding

Our old AirPort Extreme station hit EOL, so we decided to upgrade it to a Time Capsule. Along the way, we're trying to also set it up with a separate guest network and port forwarding/NAT, however we're having trouble setting it up so that the time capsule is handling the DHCP leases instead of the router. We've got DSL through Verizon through a Westell modem/router to the Time Capsule. Done the RTFM thing, and we haven't been able to get it to work. Can anyone explain how to get things set up properly for this configuration?

however we're having trouble setting it up so that the time capsule is handling the DHCP leases instead of the router.
If you have a router ahead of the Time Capsule, you would want to configure the Time Capsule as a "bridge", using Bridge Mode to allow things to work correctly on your network. You don't want two devices handling DHCP on a home network. This will cause slowdowns and IP address conflicts on your network.
In order for the Time Capsule to act as the DHCP server for your network, you will need to connect it to a simple modem (one port), not another router or gateway with 3-4 ethernet ports.

  • Time Capsule forwarding ports problem.

Hi everyone I really need your help. I'm trying to configure a port forwarding to a Mac that would have to make the VPN server in my house, I''ve a Wimax connection and the router is a Time Capsule. Every time I try to set up the TCP and UDP port in the Time Capsule it says that the port is now open but when i try to go on the internet and look if the port is really open it says that is not and also I can't connect to the VPN server. Any clue ?
    Thank you very much.

    The actual vpn matters.
What vpn are we talking about?
    PPTP, IPSEC, SSL, L2TP
What model TC and what firmware is it running?
And which version of the utility are you running? This is also important.
Is the TC getting a proper public IP from the Wimax connection? Some ISP fudge and use private IP which is not routable on internet.
Put up a screen shot of the actual port forwarding you are doing.. that makes it easier to see if you have the settings correct. But that doesn't mean it will work btw.. the TC can be a difficult beastie to open.
Did you read the info from Tessarex at the head of the section?
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport?view=documents
There is one on v6 utility and one for v5 utility.
    I strongly recommend using v5.

  • Time capsule WAN port problem

Time Capsule (model no. A1409) connected to DSL modem (not router) via ethernet worked fine for a year or so.  Now TC thinks ethernet cable to WAN port is unplugged.  Every 20 (+/-5) seconds the connection restores for one second, then claims to be not connected to modem for another 20 seconds.  Different ethernet cables have same results.  DSL modem works just fine when ethernet connected direct to my MacBook Pro running Maverick version 10.9.5

Unfortunately, Apple removed the ability to manually optimize WAN port settings when they introduced the AirPort Utility 6.x versions a few years ago.
If you might happen to have....or be able to borrow for an hour or two.....a Mac running the Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x) operating system, or a PC that has AirPort Utility installed on the device, there are some settings on the 5.x versions of AirPort Utility that might help your situation.
Otherwise, you could try inserting an Ethernet switch between the modem and the WAN port of the Time Capsule to see if that helps with the Ethernet negotiation issues. The thinking here is that the switch may do this better than the WAN port on the Time Capsule.
After that, the only other real option at this point.....which may or may not help.....would be to reset the Time Capsule back to factory default settings and then set it up again.

  • Splitting the Time Capsule USB port for 2 devices ??

So if i have and external HD plugged into tc usb port and I also need to plug in a netflix ready blue ray player to the same port- is there a splitter I can buy to do this or what other options do i have?
I have an extra airport extreme I am not using-could I run an ethernet cord to it and use that usb port for my second device without and problems?
    Thx

First, yes it is possible to attach multiple devices to the TC's USB port. You will need a USB hub though. Some users have discovered that not all hubs are compatible with the TCs USB port. So you may need to shop around if the first one doesn't work.
However, the USB port on the TC is designed primarily to handle external HDs or printers. That is, it is designed to make them available to your local network, not to the internet. So I have doubts that the BR player will be able to have full interest access via the TCs USB port.

Best thing to do is connect your computer to the Time Capsule (LAN port) using an ethernet cable. Once connected, run Airport Utility and it should let you know why the light is yellow and attempt to fix the problem. If the problem persists, you should either re-configure the Time Capsule properly or conduct a hard reset and start the configuration over from the factory settings.

  • IPS Modem to Vonage router to Time Capsule to Airport Express. Now I want to add a guest network.

I want to set up a guest network.
I understand that there can only be one main router and the others should be in bridge mode to set the guest network feature on the Time Capsule.
If I set the Time Capsule from bridge mode to "DHCP + NAT" then I lose my internet.
Since I think the Vonage router is set as the main router how can I swap that function with the Time Capsule or perhaps that cannot be done.
Please let me know what I should try or whether to give up.
    Thanks.

Thanks. I understand you want to "swap" your Vonage box with your Time Capsule. That will require re-enabling the Time Capsule's DHCP and NAT as you already attempted and explained in your original post, connecting the Time Capsule directly to your modem, and installing the Vonage box "downstream" of the Time Capsule by connecting it to a Time Capsule LAN port.
I assume you using your Mac wirelessly, that you have cable Internet (as opposed to DSL, FiOS, satellite, or office / school wired LAN), and that right now everything is working including your Vonage telephone service. If any of that is not correct, stop here and let me know.
You should also print these instructions, since you will be unable to communicate with either your Mac or your phone until you are finished and everything works correctly. If all else fails you may have to begin all over again with a "hard reset" of both your Time Capsule and the Vonage box and reconfigure them completely. Any Time Machine backups already completed will not be affected though.
    Then:
Power down your cable modem: unplug it from the wall receptacle.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable linking the Vonage box and the Time Capsule. Set it aside for now.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable end attached to the Vonage box's blue port, and connect it the Time Capsule's WAN port instead.
Take the cable you set aside and connect the Vonage's blue port to one of the three Time Capsule's LAN ports.
Power up your modem and wait a moment or two for it to complete its startup sequence.
On your Mac, open AirPort Utility and reconfigure your Time Capsule's Router Mode to "DCHP and NAT" as you did previously. Update and allow a moment or two for it to reset.
Verify that you can use your Mac to load web pages and that your Time Machine backups continue to occur as usual.
Should something not go as expected and you need to make changes, be absolutely certain to power down your modem before changing what you connect to it.
    Next:
The following Vonage video will illustrate the remaining steps particular to the Vonage box: Set Up Vonage Box With Router
Review their tutorial and make sure all its instructions make sense for what you have. If something doesn't, write back and I'll try to figure it out.
... how to make the vonage router a bridge.
Unless you want to use the Vonage box's LAN (yellow) port to connect an additional wired computer or other network it's not necessary to reconfigure it as a bridge. The Vonage's router will just remain unused.
If you want to do that though, you must log in to the Vonage box's configuration web page. Its address will be assigned by your Time Capsule, sequentially: for example if your Mac's IP address is 10.0.1.2 your Vonage box might be 10.0.1.3 or something along those lines. You may have to experiment to find out what it is (see Note below). Once you find it though, you will be presented with a login page resembling the following:
Its default User Name is router and so is its password. Click Go to log in.
Once there, navigate to Basic Setup > Local Network Setup, and change DCHP Server to No as in the following:
    Click Apply and you're done.
Note: just like all non-portable network devices, it makes sense to assign the Vonage box a static IP address: Basic Setup > Connect to the Internet, and change Connect Using to Static IP Address. You'll have to fill in the fields using addresses appropriate for your network.

  • Can't Get E4200 Set Up to Extend Time Capsule Network

I have a location with two buildings on it. I had an E4200 working fine in the main building and now I'm replacing it with a Time Capsule and would like to use the E4200 in the other building to extend the network to encompass both buildings.
The first buildling with the main connection and the Time Capsule has a default IP of 10.0.1.1 The two buildings are too far away from each for effective wireless bridging, but they do have an ethernet cable running from one to another.
I tested the cable between the buildings and it's working properly picking up a DHCP address from the Time Capsule.
I'm trying to set up the E4200 to simply extend the network by plugging in the ethernet cable from the Time Capsule LAN port to the E4200 WAN port in the other building. I'd like to use the same network name and everything so the E4200 simply picks up the clients in the second building and sends them back to the Time Capsule. I'm hoping this will allow Time Machine back ups when using the E4200 signal.
For the life of me, I can't figure out what these settings should be and what I have below certainly doesn't work. Here is a picture of the E4200 Router Options. Can someone please tell me what these should be to accomplish this task? The Time Capsule has a DHCP range of 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200. NAT Translation is on in the E4200 options in another section as well if that matters. I also tried setting the Static IP address from the Internet Connection type and the Router Address to the same 10.0.1.250, but the E4200 router won't allow me to do that.
I appreciate any help out there as I'm going a little crazy having worked on this for a few weeks now with so many different settings and pieces of hardware. Thanks!
