Time capsule locks while copying to pc

I have GE 4th gen time capsule with the latest firmware. I have copied 1tb of data to the unit from my dell laptop. Now when I try to copy data off of the time capsule it times out and drops my wireless network. I end up having to power down the time capsule to restart. I can copy small files under a couple mb with no problem, but it fails with multiple files or data larger than 50 mb or so.

That it works with ethernet tells you the fundamental problem is wireless.
There are lots of issues with passing large files via wireless in the purely windows world. I would check your model laptop has not been reported as having this problem..
As I keep trying to suggest.. bypass the problem.. to point the finger at the actual issue.
You bypassed wireless and the problem went away.
You fixed up names and security and still have the problem.. that suggests fundamental issue in the wireless driver that could be either at the TC or Laptop end.
So now we need to figure out which end.. easiest way to do that is a different wireless driver.
So
1. Have you updated the wireless driver in the laptop.. don't use the Dell ones.. go right to the source. if it is Intel wireless (open the bottom hatch and look at the model number of the wireless card), download the driver from Intel and install it. Test it.
2. If you still have issues, I would recommend testing with a different laptop. A Mac one is the obvious thing.. if it works with a Mac then it is pointing more at the PC end. (Invite a Mac owning friend to dinner and invite him/her to test your TC whilst there)
Another alternative is to turn off wireless in the laptop and buy a USB stick wireless. These are cheap enough and you might already have one lying around. AE1000 linksys one is reported to be very good.
Test it.
3. If you are still stuck and plainly the issue is not with the TC.. (it is not likely to be) but it can be incompatibility.. latest TC are broadcom chipset. Get a broadcom chipset wireless and see. There are still issues between brands for wireless.
4. Do a google search for wireless issues transferring large files.. as a mod on a forum in Australia I see those kind of issues come up fairly often although less so recently. How old is the Dell??

  • Time capsule locks up when accessing hard drive

When I use my Samsung notebook to wirelessly access files on my Time Capsule, the TC locks up and I have to reset it.  There's no problem when it's connected via ethernet cable.  Any ideas?

Try and see if there is a different wireless driver for the samsung.
Use SMB names.. not apple names.. for everything.. ie short no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.. absolutely no apostrophe.
This is for TC, wireless and hard disk..
    Fix the wireless channel.
    Use WPA2 Personal security only.
Set the WORKGROUP correctly in file sharing.

  • New Time Capsule: How to copy Time Machine history from previous disk?

    Hi everybody,
Just got a new Time Capsule which is going to serve as my new Time Machine Back-up.
I've got a year's worth of TM back-up on my old USB disk that I'd like to pour over to the new one.
When I try to do that, it says the Time Capsule can't be changed.
If I simply select the new TC as the disc for TM it obviously starts a new "time line".
How can I either copy the old data over, or merge the two?
    Thanks,
    Rob

don't try copying via finder. that won't work. directly attached TM backups are stored differently from remote ones. directly attached ones
are stored directly in a folder an the drive and the remote ones
are stored in sparse bundles. the following may work. set up the TC to be the new TM drive and start a backup. as soon as it starts stop it using TM menu->stop backup. open the TC drive in finder. there should be a sparse bundle created there. double-click on it to mount it. it should be empty.
then use the "restore" tab in disk utility to clone your old TM drive to the mounted sparse bundle. make sure to check the box to erase destination. when the cloning is finished eject the mounted sparse bundle and try backing up again.

  • Time capsule crash when copying files from it

Hi, I'm trying to copy files from a time capsule to a windows 7 pc. When I do that the time capsule crashes. I can copy files from the windows 7 pc to the time capsule without problems. Has anybody got a clue? I just bought the time capsule, so it has the latest versions.

What do you see that you interpret as a Time Capsule crash?  You can use AirPort Utility to look at the log file of the Time Capsule.  Go into "Manual Setup", then invoke Base Station > Logs and Statistics.  There might be a message in the log that helps explain the problem.

  • Time Machine stuck while copying and it ends up blocking the whole mac

I've a problem with my time machine backup. The backup drive is a partition on an external USB drive. The drive has another partition for data. Everything worked good until yesterday. It gets stuck while copying the files, e.g. 532 MB of 5.45 GB, and it doesn't move even after a couple of hours. The backupd process is constantly using 100 % of one CPU and the other applications are getting stuck as well. I also notice that the USB drive stops spinning at a certain point, as if it goes idle.
I can't cancel the backup and I have to force shut down the Mac. After the restart, the backup will stop at Zero KB. If I delete the inProgress file nothing changes.
    Here's the log:
    Starting manual backup

  • Time Capsule lock up

My brand new time capsule seems to lock up randomly. The only way to get it back is to unplug it for a few seconds and allow it to reboot. I've tried for 4 days to reach tech support and waited an hour each time ... they must be too busy to answer. Anyone else having trouble? Any non-obvious settings that I might have missed?

    Greetings,
I'm sorry to hear that you are having troubles with Time Capsule - I have been using one since they first became available and haven't noticed anything like this and I have had machines wake up from sleep or be put to sleep and back without a lock up.
I didn't do anything trick, I just used the defaults, as I always do to begin with, and set up security.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Time Machine to Time Capsule locking my Macbook - help?

I'm close to returning my new 1tb Time Capsule and buying a cheap router. Much frustration
My network consists of 3 Macs - 1 G5 iMac and 2 first gen Macbooks (10.6). One Timecapsule, with an Airport Express as an extender. A few other devices (couple of Tivo's, couple of iPhones, printer etc) too. They all work flawlessly.
The iMac has no Time Machine (10.4) - Wireless backups using "Backup" take forever, but do eventually work.
The Macbooks do - one is a lesser used machine with only 50gb or so on the drive - we did the first backup via ethernet and the rest is fine, and as expected. It gets affected when the AE drops internet (more below).
My Macbook is a different story - the initial backup is close to 200gb, and seems to lockup even over ethernet (everything freezes, system clock stops at a set time).
I did get one initial backup, but the incremental backups are still incredibly slow - I'm a photographer, so one photo shoot could be 2gb of files to backup over the WAN. It never seems to complete - usually Firefox or iTunes will crash (Not Responding), sometimes my local airport express may fail and drop internet connection (a soft reset from the Airport Util brings it back, assuming my Macbook is still up).
I'm getting very frustrated - my Macbook needs to be wireless, and Time Machine needs to just work. Local drives work fine, I've not had a problem with a local USB drive in the past few years - but I didn't drop $400 on a Time Capsule to keep a local drive just for the most used Macbook.
Everything is 802.11G (core duo Macbooks didn't have 802.11N). All non Mac devices work, even with the AE in a hung state.
If I don't use Time Machine on my machine, or if I do my backups to USB drives, everything on the other machines is fine. Why can't it handle the large backups (even if it's slow)? Why does it crash my local machine, and sometimes the AE?
If I can't get this working, I'll just stick with my local USB drive, exchange the Time Capsule for a regular router and save myself close to $300, and be very unhappy

Time Capsule cannot handle large (100gb_ updates over wifi (G), regardless of time left alone. Have had to buy a second external drive for my Macbook, and pushing everything else over the wire.

  • Help! Time capsule locked.

I am trying to access my time capsule and I'm afraid that I cannot remember the password.  I have tried all the ones I normally use and some that I dont.  I have even tried "public".  Is there a way I can access it without using a password?

You need to let Time Machine load for 10-15 minutes....probably longer if you are connecting using wireless.
Even if you did "hard reset" the Time Capsule, this would not erase any of the backups on the hard drive......only the network settings and password settings are reset when you do this.
Since your "issue" has changed, it also might be a good idea to start a new message for that, so the Time Machine experts will see your new post. Provide as much information as you can about what  you have tried.

  • Time Machine Erroroccured while copying files to the backup volume.

    Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup. An error

While I am glad this worked for you, I tried this multiple times and my problem remains.
I think the concept of the timer machine is great, but backup methods that aren't reliable don't do much for me. I have a folder called "Precious" that I drag stuff into and I keep a copy of that folder on an external mirrored drive attached via firewire 800. I am sad to have to manage my files this way in 2009 but being responsible for your own data is and always has been the bottom line.
My Mac Book Pro just died after I updated to 10.5.6. It no longer boots, and AppleCare has asked me to fedex my notebook to them. They have warned me that they may wipe or replace my drive. Because of the failure of time machine, all the critical notes on my desktop are not backed up, and I have lost data I really needed.
You would think by 2009 there would be some kind of usable backup technology to help us safeguard our day to day data. Please Apple, do something about this.
Even with time machine, it is not clear to me how to restore a working operating system if something goes terribly wrong with Leopard. In the DOS days, programs and their data were stored in a directory and if you backed up that directory, you had your software and your data for later, minus of cource config.sys and autoexec.bat mods. These days with the software and data splattered all over in various directories, it is difficult (for me impossible) to assure you have everything you need to get back to where you were should something happen. I am tired of losing my data periodically when the OS tanks and I have to reload. Files I have created or downloaded I can do something about, but software is troublesome. I have multiple application programs that enforce install counts and will not reload more than two times. I am tired of begging vendors to reset my counts, and in the case of WordSearch (bible software), they refused and I lost significant time and money.

  • No permission to read time capsule files

I upgraded from one MBA to another using the Migration Assistant to transfer the account from a Time Capsule. While that worked fine, I cannot access any time machine backups prior to the upgrade--the files are there, but I do not have permissions to view them. It may be that my Time Capsule is logically screwed up (and will need to be reimaged), however these steps allowed me to open the files and I wanted to pass this on to the community.
Using Finder, Navigate to your Time Capsule and open the file for your computer ending in sparsebundle. It will show a folder named backups.backupdb. Open that folder and you will see another folder with your computer name--open that. Then you will see a whole bunch of folders that show dates in the title. Pick one which you believe will contain the files you want. Open it. In this folder you will see the name of your hard drive. Open it. Now you will see folders labeled "applications," "library," "system", "user information", and "users." Open "users." Now you will see a folder for each account and "Shared." Choose the user account of interest.
Now you'll see folders for Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, etc. Each will likely have a red circle with a white line in it (like the international road symbol for "Do Not Enter."). Right click on the one you want to view and select "Get Info". A new window opens.
At the bottom of the new window is a section called "Sharing & Permissions:"  Make sure the arrow to the left is pointing down. There is a padlock at the bottom right of the section, click on it. It will ask you for your password (which is the password for your computer). Enter it. There are now three things that can happen:
    1. You can select Read & Write for "everyone"
    2. You can select the + button at the bottom
    3. Both options 1 and 2 are greyed out.
If Option 1 works, change it to Read & Write, click on the Gear at the bottom and select option to the effect of applying these permissions to all subordinate files. Time Machine should now be able to restore from this folder.
If Option 2 works, add your current User name, select Read & Write, click on the Gear at the bottom and select option to the effect of applying these permissions to all subordinate files. Time Machine should now be able to restore from this folder.
If you got to Option 3, you now have to copy this folder somewhere off the Time Capsule. Drag the folder to the desired location. After a few minutes you will be prompted for your computer password. After it copies it will no longer be restricted. You can retrieve the files manually.
    Hope someone finds this helpful.

That's why it's recomended to use Setup Assistant when your new Mac first starts up, rather than skipping it and creating a user account.  That avoids the permissions problems.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.

  • Time Capsule crashes when Time Machine starts a backup

I've not searched through the postings here to see if other people have seen a similar problem. I've not attempted to repeat the problem I've seen here so I'm not very clear about the cause.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.4 connected via a network cabled directly to a Time Capsule which is connected to a DSL/Cable modem. The Time Capsule is updated with v 7.3.2 of the firmware. I've got Time Machine enabled but I'm also using the Time Capsule disk (1TB) to store photos that I've previously archived to CD. I'm in the process of copying all the data from CD to the Time Capsule.
Having copied some photo data to the Time Capsule I was trying out some photo cataloguing SW to see if it was any good (iPhoto is no good to me as I don't want to store photos on the local drive of my machine) - Kodak EasyShare v6.1. Having loaded some images into EasyShare I tried to use finder to search for the file names of some of the images to check that EasyShare was not copying images to my local drive. While I was doing this I think Time Machine tried to kick in and start doing a backup. I believe that Time Capsule crashed at this point. Finder froze and after I restarted it (via Force Quit not a re-boot) I discovered that I had no network connection and Mac OS couldn't see the Time Capsule under FInder or via AirPort Utility (the Time Machine backup also timed out and failed). Time Capsule just sat there with the disk spinning and a green light on the front as if all was OK. Actually - the disk just kept spinning (Time Capsule normally shuts down the drive after it is idle for a while). Because of this I'm pretty sure that Time Capsule had crashed.
I experimented with re-booting my Mac but still no network etc so I tried power cycling the Time Capsule and everything came back to life.
I'm guessing that my doing a search (or some other drive activity on Time Capsule) at the same time as Time Machine kicking in with a backup caused Time Capsule to crash.
Perhaps this is not a very interesting point if this problem is not repeatable but - well, I'd be interested to know if others have seen similar behavior...

I'm having a very similar problem and it is detrimental.
Here is the scenario: I have a 1TB Time Capsule as my primary router. I am able to perform backups on all but one of my machines. My iMac backs up via 1GB ethernet to the TC, my MacBookAir (60GB,SS) backs up via wireless N (270mb) and my other MacBookAir (80GB,IDE) also backs up via wireless N without any problems.
I used to use a 500mb external drive to backup my iMac but outgrew it, so I started backing up to the TC instead. No problems at all.
I also used to back up my Intel MacMini running Mac OS X Server 10.5.5 to a similar external hard-drive but haven't in a while.
I decided it finally made sense to backup ALL my Mac's to the same 1TB TimeCapsule but it's just not working out!
On the MacMini; I turn on TimeMachine, the TimeCapsule has been chosen as a backup location, it prepares backup for a moment, mounts the backup drive and then appears to begin backup up... No...! First I get a message the the TimeCapsule closed the connection, next I lose Internet connection across my entire network both wired and wireless and then the TimeCapsule light turns amber, flashes and essentially does a completel crash / reset and then comes back to life a few moments later. I can backup any other computer except the MacMini to the TimeCapsule without "crashing" it and it makes no sense! Every computer is completely up to date with all the latest patches and the TimeCapsule is running 7.3.2
I sure hope this gets resolved, seems like other people are pretty disgusted with the performance of the TimeCapsule with problems that have no resolution.

  • Time Capsule wireless file transfer - terribly slow until...

I've got a really strange problem with Airport and Time Capsule. Wirelessly copying a file from my MacBook 10.5.2 to Time Capsule is terribly slow - until my screen goes to sleep!
80 MB is estimated to 45 min, and only 2-3 MB is copied in two minutes. When I or Energy Saver turn the display off, the same file is copied in 35 seconds!
I discovered this by accident, but it also explains why my first backup (12 GB) looked like it would take forever, but after both me and the display went to sleep, backup was done in two hours.
Anyone else having the same problem? Anyone having the solution?
    Thanks! Joachim

    Hi Joachim,
i think it is the same for me. But only when using timemachine not when doing normal file operations. Maybe timemachine is saving bandwith while the machine is not in screen saver mode...
Your machine should not go to sleep mode when a timemachine backup is running
What is your wireless connections speed?
You can see the rate when 'ALT + clicking' on the airport symbol in the menu bar.

  • How can i connect xbox to time capsule?

Hi, I am (whilst being shouted at by my 11 year old son), trying to connect Xbox 360 to a time capsule. I tried last year without success, and afer chatting with a bloke yesterday in an Apple store, I thought I would try again. No luck. I've tried inputting every set of numbers and address I can find, but the Xbox, just will not connect. Is there a simple set of instructions that will do this? The forums I've looked at have information that is beyond me. The time capsule is connected to a Virgin media modem via ethernet. The Xbox Live connects via ethernet cable to modem just fine. I would just like it to work wirelessly so I don't have to keep plugging the cable back into the time capsule and rebooting. As an alternative is there a piece of kit that would let both the Xbox and the time capsule remain wired up to the modem? There only seems to be one connector however. Many thanks in advance.

Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN <-> port on the Verizon gateway to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
Then, temporarily connect a spare Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to help AirPort Utility "see" the Time Capsule. Once you have the Time Capsule configured and updated with new settings, you can remove the spare Ethernet cable.
If that is not successful, you will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule as follows:
Pull the power plug on the Time Capsule
    Wait 4-5 minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Time Capsule and while you continue to hold it in, plug the power back to the Time Capsule
Keep holding the reset button for 8-10 seconds before you release it
Wait 30-40 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Restart your Mac, then open AirPort Utility to configure the Time Capsule

  • I'm using my old Time Capsule as an external hard drive.  Can I back it up?

Upon upgrading my older iMac's hard drive to 500GB and more or less filling it, my 500GB Time Capsule became less useful as a backup and more useful as an eternal drive.  I've bought a new 2TB Time Capsule to use as my primary backup/router, and have connected my old 500GB directly to my iMac via ethernet cable to store large media files and free up some disk space.  My problem is that the "TC Backup Disc" partition appearing on my old Time Capsule is the only place I can store files, and this partition won't back up via Time Machine to my new Time Capsule.  I've tried erasing and restoring, but remain unable to create any folders on my old Time Capsule that Time Machine will back up.  Any ideas?

The Time Capsule is a network drive and Time Machine cannot backup files that are already on a network drive.
You might want to take a look at Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, as both of these utilities will backup a network drive like the Time Capsule.
