Time Capsule Loses DHCP IP Address and Cannot access Internet

My set up: Astound Cable Modem -> Belkin Router ->TC broadcasting wireless to 2 Apple TVs, 2 AE n units. Up until recently, we were experiencing periodic loss of internet access and rebooting the cable modem and router would get us up and running. After the 7.4.1 Airport update, the TC has been losing its DHCP assigned IP (from the router) and self-assigning an invalid address. If I am tied into the router via ethernet, I can access the internet just fine. However, using the wireless from TC, that is not the case.
I have invested a lot of time and effort into setting up a worry-free wireless network and back up solution for our two laptops, 2 iPhones and Apple TVs. Something has really gone wrong of late. I work from home quite a bit and rely on a VPN connection to remain in touch with the office. Having to restart the network every half hour or so, is not conducive to productivity!
I have tried a number of solutions on these boards, but nothing sticks. I really do not know where to go for help. Drag all the components down to the Genius bar? How do they emulate my specific set up? I suppose they could verify my TC set up is correct? But it is pretty basic: creates a network/bridge mode/serves as a TM back up source for our laptops - works by direct ethernet connect, but not wirelessly. This last problem may be a function of the image bundle name: it includes the MAC address which is different depending on whether we are accessing by ethernet or airport. Not sure about that one…
Anyway, we are really in need of expert advice and I just wanted the forum to know this easy stuff ain't so easy after all! And, that I appreciate all the help I can get from the good people who frequent this place that actually know what they are doing! Unlike me.
Any advice is welcome.

I removed the Belkin router and set up the Airport Time Capsule as the DHCP server. No problems since.

That it is still working is miraclous.. most have died.. lots started flaking out at 18months to 2years..
    See deadtimecapsule.org
The few that remained now seem to have reached EOL.. you can repair if you have some skills.. fairly cheaply.
But it is well and truly time to replace.

  • Current generation Time Capsule - lose connection to HDD in Finder but internet stays up

I have my Time Capsule hooked up to my DSL modem which I connect to wirelessly from my MBP. My internet connectivity is always up, but on a daily basis or so, the hard disk unmounts from my MBP and I have to unplug it and plug it back in so it recognizes it. The message that I get on Airport Utility is "Time Capsule was previously part of your network. Check that it is still in range of your network and is plugged into a power outlet.
I am running the most up-to-date version of OSX. What can I do to stop this?!
    Thank you

Hello. My recommendation to anybody having this issue is run to your nearest Apple Store and exchange yours for a new one. Shortly after having this issue my TC HDD died and I lost all my info. The Genius told me there was nothing to be done.
I have a new TC which is working so much better then the previous one. Internet and overall connectivity seems quicker.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.

  • Time Capsule HD failure. No way to access internet

    Hi there,
I have quite an old Airport TimeCapsule, 1TB, at least 4 years old.
Yesterday the whole system stop working and putting my hear close to the Airport I coudl hear the HD ticking.... YUUK!! Something went wery very wrong with the HD.
Problem is that the whole Airport stopped working. No way to access it, no way to reset it, Hard, soft... whatever reset is available... just amber light on.. no connection and no WiFi signal.. no way to access it via Lan port.
I went to the Genius bar here in Amsterdam. The assistant was very knowleageable and after the normal checkings he agreed with me that the HD went busted and there was no way to use the Airport.
Well, once home I decided to open the system, at least I might be able to connect the HD to another machine and try to see if I can recover the files I stored there.
Warmed the bottom of the Time Capsule rubber cover with a hairdryer so that you can "peel it" off the bottom and here you have several, yes, not just 4, several screws.... unscrew them and carefully open the metal bottom. The cooling fan is attached to the metal bottom so when you open be very careful not to plug the wires badly.. just put it aside or unplug the wires socket gently.
Well.. here you have the BIG and heavy HD there.... not even screwed in.. just perfectly fitted in his housing.
Unplugged the sockets connecting the HD and plugged back the TC to the Internet and plug in power (really be carefull not to touch inside the TC if you have not closed back the cover) ... few seconds and BAM.... back on line as nothing had happened.
So, HD failure makes the TC stop working completely!!! Remove the HD, you can still use the TC as an Aurport Exteme/Express. I will try to replace the HD in the next days... finding a HD on line which works like the one which failed shoudl not be a problem.
My failing HD was as Western Digital 1.0 TB SATA 32MB Cache WD1001FALS (WD Caviar Black)
Let me know if you need more info. What wrked for me... might work for you too.

Yes, it is a standard issue. The power supply will go next.
The WD black are dying en-masse.
Replace it with a green drive will help reduce the heat a bit. But getting better cooling is vital to its longer term survival. And the power supply is probably already roasted beyond recognition.
    See https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
    for different repair methods..
If you want to use it as Airport Extreme.. then you only need a 5V 2A power supply.

  • HT5622 icloud is loading my old email address and cannot access email

hi I just done a restore and was a success, 6.1,3 but on configuring iphone, start, I noticed that I cloud does not regonise my new email address,
in the restore I ticked to recover my saved sync choice over new start configuration , can anybody help please , I have changed my apple account details three times to no avail regards norman

If you are trying to change your iCloud ID, go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, then sign back in with the new ID.  This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your device, but not from iCloud.  Provided you are signing back into the same account, your iCloud data will reappear on your device when you sign back in.
To avoid losing photo stream photos, save them to your camera roll (if not already there) before deleting the account.  To do this, open your my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll.

There is now and will never be any way for PowerPC apps to run on Lion.
You'll need to go back to Snow Leopard.
Call Apple and ask for a refund on your Lion Purchase

  • Ever since upgrading to Yosemite on my Mac, I can only configure my time capsule via iPhone.  My Mac cannot locate for backup, but CAN find as my internet router.  I have followed all suggestions I can locate and have upgraded to newest version.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Considering buying time capsule have some Mac address related questions

    Hi,
as mentioned above I'm considering buying a time capsule for backup and wifi purposes.
My internet providers connection depends upon a set Mac address from the first computer you register with, the system works with any router which then clones the MAC address and issues a wifi signal to all computers. I don't have access to the origional computer which we registered our connection on, it went to the great computer graveyard in the sky and I have no record of the Mac address.
I Would like to use the time capsule system as a router and remove my existing router. my questions
can the time capsule spoof or clone a Mac address ?
I Don't want to be offline while we deal with technical support as they are quite inept sometimes.
Is it in this case really plug and play ? Can I just plug it in set it up on my Mac and away it goes where other non Apple devices can use the wifi.
Without the existing router the cable that comes into the house connect directly to the ' original ' computer and the Internet only works on that computer
hope  someone can help me I would like to purchase this device

The Time Capsule cannot clone a MAC address, so quite simply, the product is not for you.

  • Port forwarding to the Time Capsule's LAN IP address

I cannot port forwarding to the Time Capsule’s LAN IP address.
    How to fix it ?
Airport Time Capsule w/ Firmware Update 7.7.3
    Thanks !

The instructions for filebrowser show how to do it.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/support/gsw_timecapsule.php?page=6remote
It is extremely unsafe.. Using SMB over internet is a profoundly bad idea.. because people will not need to try hard to find the port is open and it is subject to simple attacks.

  • How do I configure my time capsule to DHCP mode?  I had to replace my DSL router, had a network set up before.

I recently had to replace my DSL router.  My provider, Earthlink, walked me through the setup and I do have internet access if I connect directly to my Mac.  When I tried to use my time capsule, it would not work.  The Earthlink tech said I needed to reconfigure my time capsule to DHCP mode.  I tried the set up manual and could not make sense of it.  My 90 free service is long gone.

and the text in the router mode box came up DHCP and NAT, but the lettering was in a lighter shade than elsewhere and I could not open the drop down box.
You would have had to change some other settings on the AirPort to be able make changes in the drop down Router Mode box.
Your AirPort is already configured as Earthlink suggests.
Try powering off the entire network...all devices....in any order you want
    Wait a few minutes
Start the Earthlink modem first and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a full minute
Keep starting other devices the same way until everything is powered back up
    Check the network
If still no improvement, I think you need to let Earthlink know that you have done as they asked, and ask for more steps to try.
Hopefully, another Earthlink user will see this post and offer any special information or tips that only they would know.

  • How do I use Time Capsule as a wireless router and turn my current one into modem only

I have a crappy modem/ router and before I purchase a new modem I want to use the modem (no wireless) feature of my router.
    Question #1
How do I use my Time Capsule as a router?
    Question #2
If I do this will I still be able to wirelessly back up to my Time Capsule?
    Question #3
How do I turn off (wireless) or the router function of my modem/ router?
    Question #4
I then want to connect all my wireless devices to my Time Capsule making that
the main WIFi in my house. I am assuming this is possible it is I just dont know how to go about doing this myslef without guidance, and the Airport Installer is confusing to me.
    Thanks!

    Question #1
How do I use my Time Capsule as a router?
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/router to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue to follow the guided setup to  configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network".  Select the "Bridge Mode" option when it appears during the setup. (AirPort Utility will normally do this for you)
    Question #2
If I do this will I still be able to wirelessly back up to my Time Capsule?
    Yes
    Question #3
How do I turn off (wireless) or the router function of my modem/ router?
We prefer not to guess at things, but since we do not know the make and model number of your modem/router, and this is an Apple support area, we have little choice.
In general, you would enter the default IP address of the device into your browser to bring up the configuration pages (check your documentatio on the modem/router for this information, or it may be on the back or bottom of the device. An example of a default IP address is something like 192.168.1.254
There will be a wireless settings page that will allow you turn off the wireless function of the device.
If you acquired the modem/router from your service provider, they should be able to tell you how to do this as well, or if you check the manufacturer's website, they will likely have a support area for questions like this.
    Question #4
I then want to connect all my wireless devices to my Time Capsule making that
the main WIFi in my house.
You will need to log on to the Time Capsule wireless network from each device and enter the password to connect. Most computers will "remember" the setting so that you do not have to enter the password each time that you connect.

  • Can I use my Time Capsule as a backup disk and storage?

Can I use my Time Capsule as a backup disk and put files from my other USB external hard drive on it, using the TC as an external as well?

Actually, there is a way to limit the amount of space Time Machine uses for backup so that it won't eat up all your disk space...for example, I have mine set to only use 65GB, and then it starts to overwrite older backups...Google it for more info. To begin with, I deleted my Sparse Disk Image Bundle from Time Capsule, and used Disk Utility to create a Sparse Disk Image Bundle (turn off backups first!!!) with a capacity of 65GB in HFS Journaled, Case Sensitive...The Image must be named as follows "Full Computer Name_Ethernet MAC Address" (The ethernet MAC address is used even if you plan to solely use wifi for backups). for example, my Sparse Disk Image Bundle name is "Ahmad Atiya's MacBook Pro_00254b9d8f72.sparsebundle" Move this image to your time capsule's main directory (if you didn't create it there to begin with). Go to your Time Machine preferences, turn it on, and set it to use your Time Capsule. It should start using the image you created. If you click "get info" on the disk image, it'll show a capacity of whatever you created.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule strictly for system backup and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs

I want to use the Apple Time Capsule as an external drive and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs. Can I do that? The reason I ask is that my Time Machine utility cannot find the TIme Capsule - it only shows me the Airport Extreme, even when I "Rescan". SO I am unable to use the Time Capsule.

You will need to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds, then give it another minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule, and click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab located below the row of icons to assign a name to the Time Capsule, a device password, and adjust Time Zone settings.
Next, click the Wireless tab located to the right of the Time Capsule tab
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right to save the settings and allow 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.
    You are all set

my macbook pro is connected to internet via my time capsule but my iPad and iPhone won't. it shows wifi connection to the time capsule but when i go on to the internet on the iPad or iPhone, it comes up with network error. can anyone help?

This can be caused by a number of issues.
Was everything working and then suddenly stopped??
Or is this a new clean setup and has never worked.
Do you have a cable modem which is not a router and the TC setup in bridge? That will cause it. The TC must be in router mode, ie dhcp and nat.
Check the IP the MBP gets including dns and gateway..
Then check the ipad/iphone.. post what IP dns and gateway (router in applespeak) they get.

You cannot backup network drives with Time Machine.
You can simply setup the TC in the network.. it is a shared drive.
