Time Capsule/Machine - Duplicated Volume

Hi,
since I have upgraded to SnowLeopard something went wrong with my time machine.
I have a Time Capsule hard drive called "TimeCapsule".
Now every time Time Machine runs, it seems to be mounting two volumes (called backup of xxxx and MAC OSX for some bizarre reasons).
I have notice that two volumes have been created:
TimeCapsule and TimeCapsule-1
On TimeCapusle-1 there are all my old backups, on TimeCapsule the new one (only the last one done, all the others seem to have been sent across to TimeCapsule-1).
Even in time machine, when i select the disk to back, i see two timecapsules (despite only having one in my network) with the same occupied space and names. However i never seem to be able to backup to the "right one".
Anybody had this problem? How to fix it? I would really like to be able to accesss all my backup history without deleting them all.
Thanks
Claudio

anybody has any ideas on how i can fix it? It's really bugging me
many thanks
Claudio

  • How can I restore photos from Time Capsule/Machine w/o getting lots of duplicates?

    Hi All,
I recently "lost" some photos and tried going into Time Capsule/Machine to restore them.  I went to applications, opened Time Machine, got the "Star Wars" like screen, scrolled to the appropriate date (I thought), clicked on that date, went to my user name, clicked on Pictures and then clicked on iPhoto Library.  It asked me if I wanted to create a copy called iPhoto Library2 and I said yes.
Next I clicked on restore and it began restoring my iPhoto Library from that day.  Unfortunately it created copy after copy after copy of each photo, hundreds!!  And it broke down each photo into faces. Again and again and again. Bottom line is that since I must have picked the wrong date my pics weren't there.
I decided to delete iPhoto Library 2 and there were some 130,000 items to delete.  Then it took about 24 hours to secure empty my trash.
So my question is how can I avoid this next time?  I really want to get these photos back but am afraid to try it again.
Thanks in advance for any advice!  They are of my 19 year old niece's visit to Australia so the pressure is on!
    Kindest regards,
    Becky

You might post this query on the iPhoto forum and perhaps someone there can provide an answer.
I tried this on my MBP and it seems that you have to restore the entire iPhoto Library.  What I did was put the current library in a separate folder on the desktop and then I restored the library from a prior date.  If you were to do that, you then could extract the desired photos and then delete the restored library.  Then place the current library back to the original location and import the desired photos.
Not tidy but it seems it will work.
    Ciao.

  • Will easing time capsule/machine drive erase time capsule/machine trash

will easing time capsule/machine drive erase time capsule/machine trash which will not delete

Not sure exactly what you are asking here.
If you erase the Time Capsule drive, all previously stored data on the drive will be wiped clean.
The Time Capsule drive will be in the same condition that it was in when it was new, and you had not yet backed up any data to the drive.
Is that what you want to accomplish?

  • Time Capsule/Machine or Yosemite Issues

    Hi,
I am really struggling with my system, 10.2.  Not sure whether it is OS X or time capsule, although both have been reset, reformatted, OS X reinstalled as backup and as fresh install with only putting back applications and documents.  But my system is still playing up.  Any suggestions?
My symptoms are, time machine backups occur regular to time capsule then after sometime they just stop running.  I have not seen a valid error message.  I reboot the mac and it struggles to shutdown, often black screen with the rotating circle.  I have reset PRAM/SMC/NCRAM, I have tried so many things with little success.
I have the time machine widget which says the message below, although the preference panel said that it was looking for the disk, not that it was preparing or anything.  So I cancelled it.

The error I see is that the drive was NOT dismounted at the end of the previously successful backup.
So the next attempt at backup sees the drive as busy with the last backup.. to break this cycle has been an issue since Lion.. !!
The fix is simple .. reboot the TC. Once a week that is ok.
Not particularly helpful though if it happens several times a day.
This is just poor programming from Apple and poor bug fixes ever since.. not treating these issues as serious.
Both Time Machine and Networking in the latest Yosemite are simply poor.
I recommend you jump out. Accept the inevitable and use either a local external drive as a TM target.. so you get away from the network issues.
Or buy Carbon Copy Cloner (or other 3rd party backup) and use that.. to get away from the TM bugs.. you can even combine them and use CCC on an external drive.. but you will need to explore what works for you.
This is my list of details of getting past the networking issues with Yosemite.. but TM may still have issues. And I cannot fix those.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.

  • Time Capsule backup failed, volume read-only, can't delete

I've only been using Time Machine and Time Capsule for 2 months. This week it stopped working. First error message:
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
Checking the Time Machine preferences, "Last backup" would read "backup failed"
When I got this error, all the wireless functions went offline, even thought the TC light was still green.
I would shut down, shut down the Time Capsule, shut off my modem reboot everything in order.
I would come back online, but after about 20 minutes to 1.5 hours into the next backup, same thing would happen again.
    Next error message:
"Disk repair. The disk 'Backup of [my computer]' was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must backup your data and reformat the drive."
Then: "Time Machine Error: The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume ... Time Machine preferences ... "
I spoke to someone at Apple, who sent me the Time Machine Troubleshooting page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275?viewlocale=en_US
    Steps I went through:
    1. updated my system software
    2. updated the TC firmware to 7.4.1
    3. dragged the sparsebundle to DiskUtility. It took a while (more than an hour?) but said the disk could not be repaired. When I tried again, the repair function wouldn't run.
    4. tried to delete the sparsebundle, but it would choke at almost the end, sometimes it would just crash the finder, sometimes say "Sorry, an unexpected error occurred," sometimes "Operation cannot be completed because the item 'bands' is in use." I even tried to Stuff the bundle with 'delete original' checked, but the stuffing, after about 15 hours, jammed near the end (stuffed 20 gigs of 35 gigs).
    5. tried to reselect the TC, and run backup anyways ... now it can't find the volume, back to the error messages and crashing Finder
    6. checked password in Keychain, all ok.
    Now what??
Do I use Airport Utility to erase it? At least TC is still showing up there. Or press the rest button on the back of the Time Capsule to reset to factory defaults?
I've resigned myself to losing my backups. Now I would just like to get it up and running again.
    In hopes,
    Linda

Yes, open Airport Utility and erase the drive. Once the sparsebundle is corrupted beyond repair there's little more you can do. However, do not reset the TC. Doing so will not erase the drive, but it will remove any custom configurations you may have setup for the router. Only if that part of the TC is also misbehaving should you use the reset button.

  • Time Capsule/Machine and iPhoto

    Hi all,
I recently purchased my Time Capsule, was under the assumption that everything was backed-up for me via Time Machine. After backing up my iMac and taking it in for an HD repair, I immediately came home and restored my iMac as directed. Problem is, I cant see any of my photo libraries in iPhoto. Can anyone help?
    AM

No offence taken at all, and Pondini is definitely the expert on TM.
    However, his question:
    3. Can I use my TM disk for other stuff?
    leads to this answer...
Yes.  Time Machine will not delete anything you put there.
But it's much, much better to partition an external drive into 2 (or more) parts, also called volumes.  Assign one to Time Machine, for its exclusive use for backups;  use the other partition(s) however you want.
Which is what I was aiming to say...
    Regards
    TD

  • Time Capsule (Machine) Security

I'm wondering if Time Capsule/Time Machine will ever include a security (encryption) feature?
As it is Time Machine backups can be viewed on other machines without a password.
And Time Capsule is just going to make it that much easier to see backups of other machines on your network.

We won't know the answer to this question until Time Capsule ships. My guess is that it will not have encryption, since it is not a feature required by the the typical personal/home computer user to whom this device is being marketed.

  • Unable to connect to Time Capsule: "Access the volumes and files locally"

I've been experiencing a problem for about two months now with no ability to connect to my Time Capsule. I have other systems in my household including being able to access from a Windows desktop and another older MacBook.
When I attempt to connect to the Time Capsule, I receive an error "The server <Capsule Name> is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally."
I've attempted various fixes including changing the network sharing name of my laptop and time capsule name via AirPort Utility as suggested in the following link without success:
    http://positivelyglorious.com/software-media/snow-leopard-afp-access-the-volume- and-files-locally/
I've also seen that this was previously posted late last fall without any satisfactory resolution at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10526171
And none of the troubleshooting helpful hints in the following link are applicable or resulted in any resolution of my problem:
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html
With now two months of no backup, this is getting a bit ridiculous. I had hoped a OSX update would have helped but as of yet no glory.
I would GREATLY appreciate any help any of you might be able to provide!
    Thanks,
    Tim

Several volumes and folders have been shared and they are accessible within LAN. The problem is that I cannot even connect to the server, even though the connection has been established. Mac OS X always seems to think that it has already been connected and they are readily available but it's not listed under Network.
Looking at other topics, this seems to be a prevalent problem but I don't find any solution for this yet.

  • How to use Time capsule/machine to back up external HD

Hey, I cannot find an answer to this. My problem is simple. I just started using time machine with my new capsule. I have successfully used TM to back up my internal macbook hard drive, however all my music is on my external hard drive. I want time machine to back up my music from my current external HD to my Time Capsule. I've gone into Time machine preferences in order to remove my external HD from the "do not back up" list (which it is currently in), however, i am not allowed the option to remove it. Any thoughts.

First your external HDD with all your music needs to be directly connected to your Mac. Second, it needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journal). Time Machine will not backup a FAT32 or NTFS formatted HDD. Check under Disk Utility to confirm. If you need to re-format, you will need to transfer all you data to another HDD and reformat with Disk Utility. After moving your files back, try Time Machine again. Go to Options and try to exclude.

Only the latest one shows up in the Finder and the other three are hidden, is there any way I can stop these three extra volumes from mounting? and I assume they are taking up space on the Time Capsule.

Ok fixed it, if anyone wants to know
In Finder, type “Apple-Shift-G” it will prompt you for a location, type “/Volumes” and hit go. Trash extra Time Capsule mounts and disconnect/reconnect Time Capsule.
