Time Capsule mount disappears

I can connect, via the Shared section in finder, to my Time Capsule and browse folders. But if I then look at a different disk in finder and try to go back to my Time Capsule I'm presented with just a folder icon and Name TimeCapsule Kind Sharepoint underneath. I have to unmount my timecapsule and re-mount it to be able to access the folders again.
Any assistance appreciated.

Hello everyone,
I can confirm this problem. I have two Macs that both mount a hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme (Version 7.4.2) via AFP.
I can access the hard drive once. When I close the finder window and open a new one the finder can't open the drive. Additionally, the alias on the desktop doesn't work. I get an error message that the destination can't be found.
Interesstingly, if i use the terminal and change to the mounted hard drive below /Volumes/[hard-drive-name] there are no problems. I can browse the folders and the content.
I have my iTunes library on that drive. iTunes works fine with the media on the mounted drive even if it is no longer accessable with the finder. In addition, I run ChronoSync for backups with that drive with no problems. So, the problem seem to be related to the new finder in 10.6.
Probably the problem is realy about the rights of the mounted volume. They are something like:
drwx------@ [username] staff ...
What does the @ in the output mean? What rights/user/group do mounted volumes normaly have?
Any help appriciated!
Thanks,
Daniel

My time capsule mounts to my Mac but is not displayed on Migration Assistant.
Very strange...there doesn't seem to be any issues with my Time Machine backup on time capsule, and I can easily access all files via Finder mounting the sparsebundle. However, when I try to fully restore the backup to my iMac, Migration Assistant cannot find any of the backups.
    Any idea why?
    Thanks!

Try preforming a factory reset and start over. This is explained at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728

Sorry, you have lost me since it appears that you have two completely separate issues here.
All that I can suggest is you start over and try to set up the Time Capsule again first...and then, once that is done and the Time Capsule is working correctly on the network....then, try to troubleshoot the separate Time Machine issue.
If you decide that you want to do this, we'll need some basic information:
Make and model number of your modem?
You are using OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), correct?

Only the latest one shows up in the Finder and the other three are hidden, is there any way I can stop these three extra volumes from mounting? and I assume they are taking up space on the Time Capsule.

Ok fixed it, if anyone wants to know
In Finder, type “Apple-Shift-G” it will prompt you for a location, type “/Volumes” and hit go. Trash extra Time Capsule mounts and disconnect/reconnect Time Capsule.

  • Multi user use of external hard drive (Time Capsule) mount and permisssions

I have an iMac (intel, OSX10.6.7) and Time Capsule [TC]. I have set up Time Machine to use the TC. I also use the TC for additional storage - Photos and Music - to keep the iMac drive fairly free. There are 5 users of this setup (2 Admin). The TC is also accessed from windows machines and so I can not use a sparse bundle for it.
When one person is logged in and the TC drive is "Mounted" for that user, all hunky dory. On the one hand the Time Machine is able to mount, connect backup, and disconnect it's sparse bundle with no issues. If another user (admin or not) tries to access the TC drive (not Time Machine) they can not get at the contents, it is marked with a No Entry sign on the Folder Icon.
How oh How oh How can I get the Time Capsule (External Drive) mounted so that all the users can access it without a previous user having to disconnect? Also how can I get it to keep the permissions I set (to inherit) rather than permanently reverting to read-only after someone had updated the file?

  • TIME CAPSULE FILES DISAPPEARED

I have did a lot of movement of equipment and computers and moving my Time Capsule.  Trying to set all the equipment back up, I have run into a problem of not being able to access my files on my Time Capsule.  It is an older Time Capsule (1TB, 2008/2009) and I was only using it store large files and documents I did not use often.  Honestly, I have not tried to access the TC until y wife wanted to put all her music on the TC to save spacc on her MacBook.
The Time Capsule was just networked as a device off of my current Router but now it is connected (Ethernet) to my iMac only.  The actually server icon shows and the folder I had everything under shows but nothing comes up inside the folder.  It shows connected and this is the errors I have seen thus far and other info:
    * TC is connected through the extra ethernet port, not the WAN port, to my iMac
    * I set the TC as 3 different Network Mode settings (Off, Create wireless...., Extend wireless....)
    * Router Mode was set in Off (Bridge Mode)
    * Created an entire different user/pw just in case user was issue, all same results
    * Software is up to date
    * Under "Get Info" Unknown user shows up with "Read & Write"; Everyone has "No Access"
    * I added a user on the Time Capsule settings
    * Cannot add or change users under "Get Info".  I get "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission."
    * Says I have 200GBs left, as if the info is still there....
I have googled and searched the internet but cannot find anyting to help my situation.....
    Help, Please.....

    Hi, glad you solved it.
There should be a warning message pop up when you activate USER accounts that all previous backup are going to disappear.. Of course in Lion.. anything can happen.
New Issue:  I can only access the TC from my iMac.  I removed it from the Home Router (Motorola Surfboard) because they did not want to play nice together.  I could not use it as Extened or Create a new network (not sure if that makes sense).  I have not tried to link it as neither though....
Time Capsule can join to a wireless network.. but it doesn't play nice with wireless from other brands.
    The TC should be bridged.
So if you use lion.. I recommend to download and use the 5.6 utility.. I sure this is possible with 6 or 6.1 utility but I don't know how.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to manual setup, and internet tab.. connection sharing.. and select off bridge mode.
Then plug the TC into the existing router.. (it has to be a router not a pure modem for bridge).
It will then pick up an ip from the router .. you can access the TC then either directly through ethernet or wireless on the TC.. or via the network on the surfboard.. it is now one flat network.
    Cheers
    LaP Dog!!

  • Time Capsule backups disappeared. Anyone can help?

    Hello!
I would like to know if anyone has experienced the problem I'm having now.
I have a 2TB Time Capsule to backup the data from my MacBook Pro (2.53GHz Core 2 Duo). A couple of days ago, I needed to look for a backed up file, so I ran to my TC backups, but they were all gone. I have absolutely no idea what happened. The error message was that the backup disk could not be found. I don't think the data was erased, because the space available in the TC is the same as before, but I just can't find anything there. When I enter Time Machine, all it shows is the Today (Now) backup. I tried to select the backup disk again and click the "Backup Now" option, but all it did was a new backup with all the data in my computer (as if it was my 1st backup), so I am 200GB short now.
I really need some files I had in those old backups... does anyone know where I can find the old backups through Finder? Any idea if my files are still in TC??
    Thank you for the help.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
It sounds like Time Machine may have started a new set of backups for some reason.
See if there are two +sparse bundles+ on the TC's internal HD. Double-click the TC on your desktop or a Finder sidebar, then look in the Data folder.
Double-click the old one to mount it, then use the +*Browse ...+* option, per #E2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • Time capsule files disappear

I use time capsule 1TG and copied some files onto it like using external hard disk. Everything was fine at the beginning, but one day all files disappeared, can't see any files name on tc.
The files are not really gone, they are still on my tc because I used spotlight to search file names and the file showed up again. But after reboot MBP, all files on TC disappear again, but I am sure the data are still there, just can't see file names.
Anyone has clues about this? Many thanks in advance for help!

Buggy TC. You just need to restart it.
Let me know how you get on.

  • TIME CAPSULE backups DISAPPEARED

I did my first complete back-up (using ethernet) 4-5 days ago. After that the backup went wireless. Perfect. Today I received notice saying my latest back-up had failed. When I entered the Timer Machine I was shocked to see I had NO PREVIOUS BACKUPS.
Has this happened to anyone else

Why did it fail ? Click on the red "i" icon near where it says "Failed".

  • Time capsule disappears in Finder

For the past 4 years, I've had 2 Time Capsules setup up to use with my Macbook Pro.  One Time Capsule was used as the router and for the Time Machine backups, the other was used exclusively for an external hard drive.  Recently, the Time Capsule that served as the router/Time Machine crashed, and I replaced it with a current model Time Capsule.
I contacted Apple for help setting up the new Time Capsule.  I am using a Motorola Surfboard modem 6121, and the internet connection and Wifi are working.  The problem is that randomly, one or both of the Time Capsules will disappear from Finder.  Since my iTunes library is on one of the Time Capsules, I can't access the music files.  Also, when I use the Airport Utility on my Macbook, I get a yellow triangle next to all of the devices; however, when I use the Airport Utility on my iPad or iPhone, every device has a green light.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  I never had this problem with the same setup before I replaced the Time Capsule.
    Thank you.

    Do a clean new setup.
Do not use old settings at all.
Reset the TC to factory and start over in the airport utility setup.
Make sure the TC has a name like TCgen5
It should be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Make sure wireless also has a name like TCwifi
Make sure the wireless and ethernet in the computer have ipv6 set to link-local.. this is now essential.
In Finder, manually mount the TC disk.
Go Connect to server from the top menu.
Type in, AFP://TCgen5.local (use your name plus the local domain which is local by default)
    Or even better.
AFP://10.0.1.1 or whatever is the IP address of the TC. Since it is then not going to get lost by ARP tables and DNS problems.
This is only useful if the TC is router.. or you can set static IP in the main router to the TC.
Much of these problems have started from Mavericks. But there are plenty of issues between the 6121 motorola modem and the new TC as well.. you may find multiple issues here.

  • Time Capsule won't mount after upgrade to iTunes 9

See my full post in the Time Capsule support section ("Help! Time Capsule won't mount after installing iTunes 9"). My music library is on my Time Capsule, but after installing iTunes 9, it won't mount on my iMac G5. I can use the internet, but the disk won't mount. My Powerbook hasn't been updated yet and the Time Capsule mounts fine.

To make it easier, here's the post:
"My music library is on my 500 Gb Time Capsule. I just installed iTunes 9 on my iMac. It updated my library and synced my iPhone. Now, the TC won't mount. I still have internet connectivity, but I can't access my media or print to my printer connected to the TC. I can use the computer and everything, but if I hover my mouse over the TC disks menu bar icon, I get the spinning beach ball there. If I try to connect using my Network icon in the sidebar, it allows me to log in and get to the screen to select the volume I want to mount, then stops responding. In the Activity Monitor, AFP Client & AirPort Base Station Agent are not responding. I also have a Powerbook G4 w/Leopard (10.5.8) which hasn't been updated to iTunes 9 yet. The Time Capsule mounted fine on it."

  • My time capsule disappear suddenly

my time capsule suddenly disappeared from the network, no green nor amber light in the front, but in the rear, the all the hardwire ports blinking a tiny little green light. it has no change even i try to restore to factory setting.
i just connect it wirelessly to my home network, no cable patched to it except the power cable. it was fine in the first few days, until it suddenly pass out

Do a full factory reset of the TC..
ie hold in reset whilst powering on.. and keep holding in reset until front LED flashes.. this will do nothing to the files.
It is easier to setup with ethernet.. sorry.. you don't have one on the air.. Apple sell a usb to ethernet fairly cheap. Or use another computer.
Use all SMB names.. that is, short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    eg
    TC name TC
wireless name TC24ghz and TC5ghz (use different name for 5ghz to force it to stay still).
    Hard drive name.. data
Use only WPA2 Personal wireless security..
Set to 5ghz if possible and you are close as it is much faster.

  • Will only perform hourly backups if Time Capsule is mounted

I've just bought myself a 500GB Time Capsule which I've connected to my iMac via ethernet.
I have noticed that the hourly backups will only be performed if I have the Time Capsule 'mounted' ( on the desktop ). If I don't the time quietly passes and nothing happens except that the time of the next backup is bumped to the next hour. When in this mode, if I launch Time Machine, it connects to the Time Capsule and then performs a backup.
Very strange, but at least it is easy to work around by having an alias to my Time Capsule disk in my 'logon items' list so that it is always mounted when I login.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or have a solution?
Apart from that the TC is working nicely.
    Steve

Hmmmm... Try this. Mount the TC Disk Image. Open TM Preferences -> Options -> + ->Exclude Backup of --. I don't know if this will work, but it may be worth a shot.
    Also, check out this link:
    and the quote:
    Backups WAY Too Large
If an initial full backup or subsequent incremental backup is tens or hundreds of Gigs larger than expected, check to see that all unwanted external hard disks are still excluded from Time Machine backups.
This includes the Time Machine backup drive ITSELF. Normally, Time Machine is set to exclude itself by default. But on rare occasions it can forget. When your backup begins, Time Machine mounts the backup on your desktop. (For Time Capsule users it appears as a white drive icon labeled something like “Backup of (your computer)”.) If, while it is mounted, it does not show up in the Time Machine Prefs “Do not back up” list, then Time Machine will attempt to back ITSELF up. If it is not listed while the drive is mounted, then you need to add it to the list.

  • Time capsule problems after OS reinstall

After getting a blue screen on restart I had to do an archive/OS reinstall today. The reinstall worked fine but I am now having problems accessing my Time Capsule.
At first my computer didn't even recognize my time capsule. After restarting my time capsule, my computer recognized it. However, when I tried to open time machine to access the files, it stalled on "connecting to backup volume" for about 45 minutes and never connected. Similarly, the backup stalls on "preparing backup." I tried to stop backing up but it is currently stalled on "stopping backup." Finally, time capsule has disappeared from the menu at the top of my screen.
Any thoughts on addressing these issues would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem as well. I did an archive and install with OSX, then updated to 10.5.5 and now all the TC does is spin and say preparing. A sample from the console is

  • 500 GB Time Capsule Working Fine UNTIL Time Machine tries to Backup

    Hi There-
My 500 GB Time Capsule seems confused. It is extending a wireless network (from another Time Capsule).
The light is green, and the signal is great---until I tell Time Machine to backup. Time Machine says that it is "Preparing Backup...". After an hour or more of "Preparing" I get an error message that says the backup failed and it was unable to connect. Then I go to the Time Capsule, and the light is blinking Amber and I can't find it.
I unplug the power source from the Time Capsule and plug it back in...and the light is back green! Furthermore, I can see the Time Capsule mounted in "Finder" under "Shared."
My computer is completely updated. The Time Capsule was working fine at one point. Now it isn't.
    Thanks, guys & girls.

I'm in a similar situation with 3 Apple laptops (Macbook Pro 15" 1 week old, Macbook Pro 17" 2.5 yrs old and iBook G4 4 years old) and Time Capsule 500GB (latest model dual WIFI, bought 2 weeks ago).
Macbook Pro and iBook did backups without problems, iBook on the 2.4GHz and the other on the 5GHz band. The Macbook Pro 17" is 5 to 10 times slower in the backups than the iBook. But - still - it works.
When I connect the second Macbook Pro (15"), Time Capsule become instable and reboot casually without reasons. It reboots casually, and frequently (from 5minutes to 30 minutes intervals).
Now: turned off the iBook and connected the computers via cable LAN to TC and the problem remain the same. These 2 Macbook Pro backing up at the same time : Time Capsule become instable. Strangely only with the 2 macbook pros, not the iBook.
I really don't manage to understand why, and from where to begin to search to solve the error. The only think I did was checking the logfile in the Time Capsule but no bessages about errors. Simply the message when it restarts.
I never arrive to complete one backup. BUT only when the 2 Macbooks Pro are doing the backup at the same time! One at time works. Slow, but works.
TC worked well during these 2 weeks until I added the Macbook Pro 15" to the WIFI net. Someone knows if one "maybe somewere faulty" computer can hang TC ?
    Other infos:
All the macs are on 10.5.7, all updates done. TC is on the 7.4.1 firmware. All the units are in the same (small) room. Except for these backups, all the computers works well (internet browsing, email, printing via TC, downloads, ...).
Appreciate any help / question that can help me to investigate
...sorry for my spaghetti english (-:
