Time capsule multi account backups

Can Time Capsule be used to backup more than one account or computer on a LAN?
We're getting a new MacBook and need a backup soultion and was thinking about the 2Tb TC to backup the new and old computers.
The other Mac is a G5 PowerMac running Leopard 10.5.8, connected to the LAN with ethernet not wireless, if that makes any difference. And we might be geting an iMac in the new year.

You can back up over your network to a shared drive on the PowerMac (or a new iMac).  See #22 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
    Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive.

  • Can I use my Time Capsule as a backup disk and storage?

Can I use my Time Capsule as a backup disk and put files from my other USB external hard drive on it, using the TC as an external as well?

Actually, there is a way to limit the amount of space Time Machine uses for backup so that it won't eat up all your disk space...for example, I have mine set to only use 65GB, and then it starts to overwrite older backups...Google it for more info. To begin with, I deleted my Sparse Disk Image Bundle from Time Capsule, and used Disk Utility to create a Sparse Disk Image Bundle (turn off backups first!!!) with a capacity of 65GB in HFS Journaled, Case Sensitive...The Image must be named as follows "Full Computer Name_Ethernet MAC Address" (The ethernet MAC address is used even if you plan to solely use wifi for backups). for example, my Sparse Disk Image Bundle name is "Ahmad Atiya's MacBook Pro_00254b9d8f72.sparsebundle" Move this image to your time capsule's main directory (if you didn't create it there to begin with). Go to your Time Machine preferences, turn it on, and set it to use your Time Capsule. It should start using the image you created. If you click "get info" on the disk image, it'll show a capacity of whatever you created.

  • Time Capsule just for backups, not for wifi.

I used to use my Time Capsule for both backups and wifi but constantly had issues, so I just disconnected it in favor of a simple Airport Express. No issues since switching, but now I have this Time Capsule just sitting here and don't do automatic backups any longer...I would like to use solely for back ups, I don't need these backups to be wireless, just for use with Time Machine. I can't find the answer by google, any suggestions?

I am trying to do the same thing but I am having an issue.
I, too, was having issues with using the Time Capsule (new one-2T) as a router and for backup (the Internet was dropping all the time). So I bought a separate router (ASUS RT-N56U) and have that plugged into my Motorola modem. The Time Capsule I have plugged into the router.
Airport Utility and I have become best friends as of late with all the problems I am having and my TC keeps getting lost-AU says that it was part of my network and now can't be found. Strangely, if I go to Open Network Settings from the menu bar and select Assist Me--->Diagnostics--->Select my network--->Continue and when the window pops up about Always Allow Keychain, I click on Always Allow. And that seems to correct the problem with my TC not being found/part of the network. This happens all the time lately.... Ever since I got the new router.
So if you or anyone have any insight into what is going on.... I will try it! Thanks for the help, Judy

    Hello,
Mac OS X 10.4 Help, I forgot a password in my Keychain

Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.

  • Time Capsule by default backup only data files and excludes program files like Photoshop, Lightroom, and MS Office, etc... right? or do I have to exclude manually?

Time Capsule by default backup only data files and excludes program files like Photoshop, Lightroom, and MS Office, etc... right since if crash I can reinstall and not want to take up disk space for applications that I have CD to reinstall?  Or do I have to manually exclude these?

Time Machine will back all files except files like caches, trash or temp files, you can select with file you would like to exclude by going into the Time Machine preferences.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

  • I am getting this error when time machine tries to back up to a time capsule.  "The backup disk image "/Volumes/JUDY ARCENEAUX's Time Capsu-1/JUDY ARCENEAUX's MacBook Air.sparsebundle" is already in use."  Same time capsule has worked in the past.

I am getting this error when time machine tries to back up to a time capsule.  "The backup disk image “/Volumes/JUDY ARCENEAUX's Time Capsu-1/JUDY ARCENEAUX’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle” is already in use."  Same time capsule has worked in the past.

First, restart the computer and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this should solve the problem.

how may I add files to time capsule apart from backup files?
I'm able to perform backup (time machine). May I add pictures, texts, movies...?
    Thanks

not sure if this is a spc. appletv question or if you posted it in the wrong forum but there is no way
for an appletv to access files directly from an time capsule it can only! access a shared lib from itunes from a computer running and running itunes

  • I can't connect to Time Capsule- error message: Backup disk is not available. Was working fine before.

I can't connect to Time Capsule- error message: Backup disk is not available. Was working fine before.

Restart it.. Does this all the time with Lion and even worse ML.
Restart the whole network if that doesn't work.. do it in correct order.. from off.. modem.. TC.. clients 2min gap.

  • HT3728 My Time Machine tells me it cannot complete the backup to my Time Capsule because the backup disk image sparsebundle is already in use.

The 2GB hard drive on my iMac failed and has just been replaced under warranty.
When I got it back I restored my Time Capsule and started back ups of the iMac and the MacBook Pro.
Now 2 days later it is telling me that  Time Machine couldnt complete the back up to my Time Capsule as the backup disc image sparsebundle is already in use. It is saying this for both machines which presumably means a problem within the Time Capsule.
What does this mean and what should I do about it?

  • Cannot select Time Capsule as my backup drive

I just purchased Time Capsule 802.11N Wi-Fi Hard Drive 1TB, and I want to use it exclusively as a wireless backup drive and not as a Router. I connected the time capsule power cord and have a yellow light on the time capsule. I then went to system preferences and selected Time machine. Once in time machine I slid the button from off to on and the only option that I have is Bootcamp and underneat it says "reformat required(incompatible filesystem). Can someone tell me why time capsule is not indicated as a possible selection?

You can't use the Time Capsule for wireless backups unless you can integrate it into your LAN, which will require configuring it.  Depending on what brand/model of router you're using, that may or may not be easy.  Start by setting "Wireless Mode" (in AirPort Utility's AirPort panel, Wireless tab) to "Join a wireless network".  If you can't get AIrPort Utility to see the Time Capsule, try connecting to it with an Ethernet cable.

  • Time Capsule user account

    I use Lion OSX
I have created 2 user accounts on my time capsule in order to backup 2 different macs in the respective user's directories. When i try to restore one of my mac from scratch using "Restore System from Backup", inserting user account and password, the utility cannot connect with the user's directory. So I can't restore my mac.
In other words: is time capsule not compatible with user account configuration? If it is not compatible why is it possible to set up accounts? In my opionion there is a bug in the "Restore System from Backup" utility.
    thanks for your support!

    The advice here is incorrect.
The real problem is that the individual machine's SparseBundles are not in a location that the Restore System from Backup expects them.
This is disappointing, since Time Machine certainly knows how to PLACE the files in different locations, but Restore doesn't know how to BROWSE for or mount the individual file systems that can easily be set up through the Airport Utility.
Basically a "left hand doesn't know what right hand is doing" situation between the different development teams at Apple, and breaking of the user experience.
However, there is another post here that explains how to at least log into your Time Capsule, MOVE the sparsebundle, turn OFF your security you built yourself temporarily, so the Restore CAN FIND the file, restore the machine, and then REVERSE the entire process by hand to put Humpty Dumpty back on the wall again.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2262413?start=0&tstart=0
That should help a lot more than "Repair it".  The person saying to repair it is not understanding your setup.  They think you have one Time Capsule disk shared by two machines.  What you have is two Time Capsule INDIVIDUAL USER DISKS with each one being used by different machines, to protect against one user grabbing a copy of the sparsebundle of another user.
Or as Eric Cartman would say... Se-cur-i-tah!!! (GRIN!)
Sadly both the Airport Utility and the Time Machine interfaces when the machine is up and running and happy, gladly allow this and even seem to encourage it, but the Restore from Backup application has zero clue built in to mount seperate Time Capsule drives, nor does it know how to ask for anything other than the overall Time Capsule system username/password combination.
    My Time Capsule has:
    - Overall System user/pass.
    - Two seperate users on two separate "disks" on the TC.
I believe this is your setup, and I've run into the same problem.  The above link works to temporarily disable all your security you built with the other tools, move the sparsebundle file to a place where Restore from Backup will default to looking for it (which is the configuration others think you're running here) and then when the machine is all restored and happy, put all the files back into your appropriate security domains.
    Hope that helps.

  • I want to use my Time Capsule just as backup, not as a router.  How?

I just want to use my Time Capsule as a wireless back-up and not as a router of any kind.  My mac is already connected to my wireless network and it seems the the Time Capsule wants to run a wireless connection of its own?
    Here's what I've done:
-Plugged the time capsule into a power outlet (have not plugged it into anything else)
-The amber light continues to blink
-Ran a back-up (to do this I had to disconnect from my main wireless and connect the time Time Capsule Connection)
-It ran through a back-up and completed, but when I tried to open time machine, it couldn't connect so I switch back to my main wireless connection
I am not good with setting up connections and things of that nature.. I am afraid to unhook my main wireless.
    What do I do?
    Thanks!

The Time Capsule should be bridged and plugged into the main router.. you can then use the wireless on the TC or the main router.. both will give you internet and TM will be able to backup.
What OS version are you running.. I only know the v5 method of setting up the TC.. where you go to internet tab, connection sharing and select off .. bridge mode.. if you have later OS.. like Lion, you can download the 5.6 utility.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
It is much better than later version. But it will not install into ML.. you will need another member to describe the method or google for it.. bridge TC with 6.1 utility.
