Time capsule multiple macs

just started with a new TC Used for 3 home MacBooks.
my son visits every 3 months or so & is hopeless at backing up, so I'd like to offer him to at least leave some backup on my TC.
the question is: When my TC is full & starts deleting the oldest backup, will it delete all his older ones before it deletes any of the other macs' backups If it only has room for  less than three months worth?

You would be better plugging in a USB drive into the TC, and let your son backup to that. First go will be slow but after that he can simply connect by wireless and do the incrementals. That keeps his backups separate and the hard disk can be taken at some point if he ever needs the backups.
Sometimes the best lessons are the ones learned by allowing failure. It is hardest for the parent.. but until you lose your vital files once.. you don't realise what backup is all about.. seems so unnecessary if you have never had a disk crash out and take out months of work if not years.

  • How to divide time capsule for Mac and PC back up

Want to know if a cant use my time capsule to do back up for my MacBook and do manual back up for the PC of my wife

How to divide time capsule for Mac and PC back up
It is not possible to divide or "partition" the Time Capsule disk......unless you pull the hard drive from the Time Capsule (which voids the warranty), place it in a separate enclosure or caddy, connect the enclosure directly to your Mac, and use Disk Utility to partition the disk. Then, you must reinstall the disk back in the Time Capsule.
This is a lot of work....best done by an experienced technician. The operation will likely cost more than the cost of the Time Capsule.
Life would be tons easier if you used the Time Capsule with your MacBook and added a separate USB drive to the PC.
If you do not need to divide or partition the Time Capsule storage space, and you are willing to have the Mac and PC share the same space, take a look at an application like Macrium Reflect to backup the PC to the Time Capsule disk.
Still, having done this in the past, things would be much faster and easier for you if you use a separate USB drive for the PC.

We seldom see this problem now.

  • My mac can't find time capsule, my mac can't find time capsule

my mac can't find time capsule, my mac can't find time capsule

I listed the commands.. that is how you manually mount the disk.. follow exactly the commands I gave you.
In finder use top menu, go, connect to server.
    Type in the following.
AFP://TCname or AFP://TCIpaddress (obviously you replace with the actual name or the actual IP address).
    If that fails..
    try
    SMB://TCname
    Here is the screenshot.
tardis4 being the name of my TC.
It should then ask you for your credentials.
And it should remember them in the keychain and be able to then get TM to connect.

  • HT3486 Can I shared the files/folder of my time capsule with Mac/PC/iPad outside my lan?

Can I shared the files/folder of my time capsule with Mac/PC/iPad outside my LAN?

Mac yes.. use BTMM and iCloud or direct AFP connection to the TC.
There is huge amount of info.. just look up remote access time capsule.
PC no.. there is no AFP protocol application that I know of.
iPad no,.. again it is not an AFP protocol device. The only open access method apple allowed is BTMM which doesn't work for ipad.
If you want access for PC and ipad you need to replace the current modem router combo.. whatever it is with one that includes vpn server endpoints.. these can be fairly cheap.. plenty of products with 3rd party firmware will work. VPN is far superior method.

  • Find out my time capsule's mac-address ?

    Hi,
I need to find out my time-capsule's mac-address to allow it on my network (ethernet mac-address).
I found some answers to that question but unfortunatly with the old version of airport utility.
    Thanks, Léo

    1. The MAC address is printed on the label of the rubber mat on the bottom of the TC.. right there on the TC itself.. you might need a magnifying glass to see it if like me you are getting old.
    2. Download and use the REAL airport utility.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Since apple knew the one they supplied in Lion was useless.. they released on the same day the original version updated for lion.. so you could do something.. ie a utility that has utility.. rather than utility to look pretty.

  • Time Capsule + multiple partitions

Considering the 500Gb model and wanted to know if it will back up multiple partitions on one computer. I have a 250Gb in my Macbook partitioned into "system" and "multimedia." Will TC back up the multimedia partition? Also, can the hard drive be swapped out in the future?

It should back up every connected drive on your Mac unless you tell it not to. This should also work for multiple partitions. Somebody correct me if this is wrong.
As for the drive being swappable, the short answer is "not without some work on your part". Aside from voiding your warranty, you have to open your Time Capsule and remove the hard drive to swap it with another that's preformatted. (AirPort doesn't allow you to format/partition the drive. Only to erase it.) It's meant to stay sealed inside unfortunately. But you could always attach a larger drive to your TC's USB port in the future... or just go for the TB model if you think you'll need more space later.

  • Severe Time Capsule crash + Mac OS X bug (repeatable)

    Greetings to all.
I seem to have stumbled on a bit of an obscure bug with a Time Capsule, and a computer running Mac OS X 10.6.4 (32-bit kernel). The TC is the latest shipping version, 1TB- all Airport software is up to date.
Simply attempting to unzip any file over ~100MB (possibly smaller, I haven't tried) and then cancelling the operation in Archive Utility will cause the Time Capsule LED to go amber and totally lock up. Internet access is blocked, the WLAN network disappears, and the AFP file share becomes unresponsive.
Furthermore, the computer that was previously connected to the TC (the one that cancelled the unzipping operation) goes a bit wonkey- Archive Utility will perma-hang, and you can't force quit it. Attempting to relaunch the Finder causes the finder to terminate- but not relaunch (the Dock never comes back, nor does the top taskbar).
The system can still be rebooted, but the reboot process takes about 2-3 minutes longer then usual- I'm presuming something is going on in the background here that has to timeout before the system goes down and resets.
The Time Capsule will NOT come back up until the effected OS X system has rebooted. Once this happens, the TC will eventually reboot and the LED will go green again. Operation resumes as normal after that.
Again, I can repeat this indefinitely. I have tested this on multiple systems all running 10.6.4 (on the same Time Capsule). I've even reset and formatted the TC itself. The moment I attempt to unzip a file on a Time Capsule AFP share, the unzip operation will take forever to complete- and cancelling it will cause the TC to "crash" and totally bug out the host OS X system.
What should I do to notify Apple of this?
And/or does anyone else dare to confirm this bug? All you need to do is upload a sufficiently large ZIP file to any Time Capsule AFP share, double-click on it while it's on the share, then click the Cancel button in Archive Manager. AM will immediately hang and the TC LED will go amber in a few seconds.
It doesn't seem to cause any data loss (as far as I can tell), but it's bloody annoying and I'm not to thrilled with the way it glitches out Mac OS X when it does happen. Navigating Time Capsule shares with user data on them is basically a minefield- one wrong double-click on a ZIP archive, and you'll take down the whole TC.

  • No sign of time capsule on mac pro yet i can get into my setting

hi , i came back from travels for a week only to find i could not back up my time capsule, even more my time capsule could not be found as a disk in airport, yet i could open time machine preferences from the top menu then slide the bar to on, the new box would open, with "no" time capsule disk showing, then if i clicked "set up time capsule", i would go straight into my capsules setting. ive tried updating my mac and also ive killed the power to the capsule, yet no joy, i still cant get into my back ups or locate the disk on the screen and my mac says there is no time capsule connected.

oh i forgot, the internet side of the time machine is working fine, it still holds all the access bits and bobs and still goes on line and also the wireless side of it works too, so i can go wireless and get internet access and access the set up as before but still no capsule showing

  • Time machine multiple macs sharing one HD via Wifi

I need help with time machine app.
I would like to use one external hd for multiple macs to backup with time machine.
I read about different method, the one that I think is better for me is to sharing the HD on a network.
I have one Imac and two macbook.
What I did is to connect the HD to the Imac and than I shared the HD volume with sharing files.
I create two accounts for the macbooks and then I connected them.
    So far so good.
But I din't use this network configuartion for the first backup, what I did instead was to connects the different computers one by one with thunderbolt.
Now I had to change the destination dirve from the old HD (connected via thunderbolt) and the "new" shared HD - actually is the same drive!
I thought that the macbook time machine app just recognize the last backup and just makes a new one from that point.
But it seems doing a new backup. (Last backup: none)
It creates a new file Macbook of Alessandro.sparsebundle
    Any tips?
    thanks in advance

  • Using Time Capsule and Mac Mini to replace a PC.

I have 4 macs of various vintage in the house and 1 PC. I use the rather robust PC as the server for my itunes library. I'm fully uploaded to iCloud. I'd like to replace this final PC with a Mac Mini but none have a harddrive large enough to accomodate my iTunes library. (about 785G of music and video) Can I use a Time Machine as the storage device for my iTunes library? Can I connect the Time Machine and Mac Mini via Thunderbolt for fast data access? Also, if I can use the Time Machine for storage of the iTunes library, should I consider the iCloud to be my "Back Up" or should I get an additional Time Machine for back up? Also, I use and AirPort Extreme as my wireless router with 2 AirPort Expresses to expand my wifi network. Can I simply add Time Machine to my existing network or will I need to replace the AirPort Extreme with the Time Capsule?

Don't use Time Capsule for media storage.. it is not suitable and although pressed into service it is a pain. (Time Machine is software backup on the computer and is completely unrelated to the TC).
The problem with using Time Capsule to Time Capsule, is simple.. it doesn't have any software to do it.. The TC is a backup device.. not a NAS. Do not try and use it as a NAS.
You can add a TC to the network without doing much.. just bridge the TC and it will work fine plugged into the AEBS.. but again it is expensive waste. You are buying a router with enclosed hard disk drive and turning off the router.. so all you have is a hard disk which is networked.
If you get a mini use firewire external drive.. you can get 2 or 3 TB fairly cheaply and plug it in. Then back up to a TC if you really want, but any NAS with Time Machine extensions will do the job. Or a hard drive in another Mac made available to the network.

  • Time capsule problems: Mac does not find it

    Hi,
Although my Wi-Fi Network is properly functioning, and Time capsule is responsible for that, my iMac is not finding Time capsule when it comes to Time Machine back-ups. I have been backing-up my Mac for about three years and the problem appeared recently. What suggestions you all have? Should I Format my Time capsule and restart it all over again? How do I manage to keep my older back-ups?
    Thanks
    Luiz

    Hi
I thank you all for the efforts in trying to help our uneasy days! Let me tell you how I was able to solve the problem I had with Time Capsule.
As I said, my Mac would not find Time Capsule anymore.
    Followed this steps:
    1. Turned off Wi-Fi.
    2. Restarted my Mac with ethernet cable connecting Mac to Time Capsule.
    3. Entered Ethernet Network connection configuration and configured IPV6 to Link-local only. Applied changes.
    4. Opened Time Machine preferences. There it was my Time Capsule again! Selected it and ordered to back-up!
    5. It is backing-up again!
    Good luck to all!

  • Hooking up Time Capsule to mac mini

Hello, I just bought a thunderbolt display and i want to get the newest mac mini. I was wondering if there is a way to hook up a time capsule to the mac mini and then hook the mac mini up to my thunderbolt display. reason being is that the mac mini only has 500gb of memory. The time capsule im looking to buy has 2tb of memory. I already have over 500 gb of stuff on my old computer that I will be transfering over. Thanks for the help.

The Time Capsule is a wireless drive. It would appear in the Shared sidebar of the Finder. You could then copy and paste stuff onto the Capsule this way. If you actually want a drive that directly plus into your Mac over USB, you would have to buy a 2TB external hard disk like this model: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Elements-External-Desktop/dp/B003IPC21Y/ ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347985261&sr=8-1.

  • Does a Time Capsule enable Mac Mini to go wireless?

Does a Mac Mini no longer need hard wiring to the internet once Time Capsule is installed?

If you configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network", the Mac Mini will be able to connect to the Time Capsule using wireless only (or via an Ethernet cable).
Here I am assuming that your Mac Mini has wireless capability.

  • Partail sync time capsule and mac

    Guys,
i have a question.... is it possible to sync partaily documents or files from my mac to time capsule or i have to back up entire hard disk?

If you are using Time Machine to back up to the Time Capsule, then it will make a complete copy of your computer on the first backup. After that, it will only backup any changes that have occurred since the last backup.
While it is possible to manually copy files from your computer to the Time Capsule disk, this is not recommended.
