Time Capsule & Music/Video Sync

OK, so here is the one thing I am wondering about Time Capsule. Seems like a logical use for it, but not sure I have seen anyone say it is possible.
- I have a MacBook Air and an iPhone
- My wife has a MacBook and an iPod
- We share a music/video collection using one iTunes account
Are we able to have one storage using Time Capsule of all our pictures/videos/music and then sync our Ipod or Iphones all locally on each machine?
It seems like Apple is SO close to making this a reality, but I would still need to have 50gb+ local files on each machine to do the sync.
Thoughts?
~ M.

I've tried to do something similar with an Airport disk but the problem is that each machine maintains its own library file for iTunes/iPhoto. If you add something to the iTunes library on one machine it must ALSO be added on another. It might be possible to copy the just the library file from one to another, but I've never tried that (it just occurred to me as I was typing this).

  • Use Time Capsule for video...

Has anyone used Time Capsule for video streaming?  How to connect to TV if it's pre-digital?

Time Capsule is not a Media Player.. it has zero ability to stream video. It has zero ability to do anything but hold files. It will sit there and hold your video files very happily .. but the dumb as a board hard disk and TC controls can do nothing with it.
You need a media player. And you need one that is able to be hacked or is not Apple. Apple work on itunes, although it is possible to use an Apple TV in the mix if you send video to it from ipad using airplay.
If by pre-digital TV it doesn't have hdmi input, then buy yourself an older media player that has component out.. there is no point buying expensive hdmi to analogue converters. You will eventually replace the TV and will definitely want to go digital. So get an Apple TV 1 that still works from ebay. And use one of the hacking methods. This has component video and you can also get composite out of it. And it will play files stored in the network. Other non-apple players will do the same. Just find one that is older design with component still but ATV1 can still work well. I use one with a crystal acceleration card running crystalbuntu firmware.

  • Time Capsule - iTunes Library Sync

Does anybody know how can I sync my iTunes library with my Time Capsule?
I made a backup of my iTunes library by copying "iTunes File" to my Time Capsule. Now, every time I make a new purchase from iTunes, I have to add it manually to the Time Capsule "iTunes File". Is there a way that this can be done automatically?
    Thanks!

I would like to backup my iTunes library in one of my Time Capsules because the computer that has all the music has a small HD (only 80GB).
I'm still not sure what you're trying to do.  If you want to back up your iTunes library, just let Time Machine do that.  That way you won't have to copy anything manually.  At the same time, you should delete from the Time Capsule disk any file that you copied there manually.  It's not good to use any disk volume where Time Machine stores its backups for other purposes.  By design, Time Machine will eventually consume all available space no its output volume, which will cause trouble for the other files.
On the other hand, if the computer with the music doesn't have enough space, then you should either replace that drive with a larger one or move the music (not "back it up") to another volume.
The best way to retrieve a file from a Time Machine backup is with the Time Machine application.  If you haven't deleted it, you'll find it in the Dock.  You can also invoke the "Enter Time Machine" option from the Time Machine icon in the menu bar.

  • ITunes ignores the "stop time" for music videos since 10.6.7 osx update.  Tried with iTunes 10.2.1, 10.2.2, 10.3.  Only way to make it work is to back out to 10.6.6 (time consuming).  Has nobody else noticed this?

Only a problem with music videos. Normal audio tracks work fine.  Introduced with 10.6.7.  10.6.8 failed to fix it.
Set the "stop time" of a music video to 10 seconds shorter than the full length and iTunes will still play it to the end.  Very annoying, especially if there's a bunch of noise at the end of a song.

More info: After I upgraded to 10.6.7, I first noticed the problem.  Downgraded to 10.6.6 and it worked again.  Upgraded to 10.6.8 when it was released to see if this had the issue fixed - but it didn't, iTunes failed to stop on time again (only music videos).
Just downgraded to 10.6.6 and it still doesn't work!!!  Now I'm really screwed and confused.  HELP!

  • Apple TV not working since new Time Capsule...Sync

I bought myself a new 1TB Time Capsule yesterday and set it up fairly easily. However, I notice now that I cannot sync my TV to my iMac anymore. It says:
The Apple TV "Living Room Apple TV" is not repsonding.
Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689.
Not sure what this means. I have 2 TV's in my flat. 1(160GB) which is wired to my TC and I sync my iTunes to it. The other (40GB) I stream wirelessly to. I have no problem with the streaming one but the message comes when I try to sync the 160GB one.
    Anyone with any ideas?
    Thanks..
    ~RICKY

I experienced the same issue with the replacement of an Airport with a 1TB Time Capsule.
FIX: Go to System Preferences/Security/Firewall, then select "Allow all incoming connections".
This was set to "Set access to specific services and applications" on my system when I experienced the same syncing error you reported.
    Good luck !

  • Music Video Syncing

When I sync my iPod touch I am not able to view my music videos in my Video app. in the iPod ! But certain music video when set to movie kind it appears under the movie section. But not all of them! Even my TV Shows don't sync! Someone help me out!! I assure you that the videos are fully compatible to be played on the iPod touch since the same video when set to movie kind it I'd listed under he moves section and I'am able to play it! The iPod will simply fail to display the music video though I am able to hear in the music app. because it is being displayed under the Music videos playlist. I have set iTunes to sync my entire library since it it only around 10 GB.

Quicktime or Quicktime Pro (which iTunes uses) don't convert "muxed" ( muxed means multiplexed where the audio and video are stored on the same track) video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.
See:iPod plays video but not audio.
You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.
See this for help: Guide to converting video for iPod (Mac/Windows).

  • Music & Video Sync issue with multiple computers

I sync my phone to multiple computers, one primarily for the ical and the other primarily for the music/video. Problem is, when I sync to my macbook pro (the ical & address book) I have the music sync turned off but it still wipes out ALL my music and videos! When I resync to my imac (the music & video) it puts the media right back on the phone of course.
Why does it wipe away my data? I tell it not to sync and it still wipes out my phone. It's quite annoying since it takes a while for the phone to re-sync 6-7 gigs of audio and video, not to mention if I'm not by my imac I have no A/V on my phone till I resync. The A/V functions are the reason most people buy the thing in the first place, I'm surprised its so un-userfriendly in this case.
    any suggestions?
    thanks,

I managed to get this done tonight.  Unfortunately, I didn't see a solution posted anywhere, so maybe I'm the first.  I did this with an iPhone, not an iPad, but I imagine the process is the same.
Step 1) Copy the contacts to the right profile.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/286044
Step 2) Back up your device.
Step 3) Start outlook and change the default profile to the one you want to use.
Step 4) Restore the device to it's original settings using the Restore button on the summary page.
Step 4) After the restore, it asks which backup you want to recover, pick the one you just did.
Now, if for some reason, it asks for an outlook profile during the restore, pick the right one.  I was asked this go-round, but not when I originally started syncing the phone.  Go figure.
Restoring to it's original settings could cause some sort of data loss.  I don't care about any game saves, and I just sync with my gmail, so my contacts were really all I was concerned about.  This process did recover 5 gigs of space eaten up by unexplained "other" data in my phone.  Maybe it was cached e-mails, maybe it was old apps that didn't uninstall properly, who knows.  But my apps, my e-mail, my contacts, my notes, my text messages and my calendar are all in place.
I have read that the default profile can be changed after the first sync, but in my situation, I wanted my outlook to default to this profile anyways.
Hopefully this will pop up in a google search for the next person who runs into this problem.  It sure was a headache for me.

  • Time capsule and video

Have a DSL modem/wifi router as primary network. Would like to add a time capsule to receive video streaming from the internet (netflix for example). The time capsule would be connected to a DVR via ethernet cable.
    Is this possible?
And if so, can it still be used as a time capsule for backups.
AND if so, how does one do that?
    Thanks

    Sure!
However, just as you are planning to connect the Time Capsule to your DVR via Ethernet, you will want to use Ethernet to connect your the TC to your DSL modem.
If you don't have that option with your existing router, because it doesn't have an Ethernet port, it had better be using 802.11n. You will not be satisfied with the performance of an 802.11b/g network for video.
And if so, can it still be used as a time capsule for backups.
    Yes.
AND if so, how does one do that?
The TC also functions as a network storage device. Apple's Time Machine makes it easy, but you can use other utilities if you're comfortable with them. Again, I think you would be dissatisfied with its performance in that capacity unless you are using an 802.11n network, which the TC can create. A wired network is always preferable though.
If you have computers or other devices that are not 802.11n capable, the TC can also create a b/g network for them, and bridge the two, so you won't have to use your DSL modem's wireless.
    It's a pretty versatile device.

  • Wifi connecting drops on Time Capsule when I sync iMac with appletv

I've had this issue ever since I got my 27" iMac and I can't figure it out.
    My setting:
I live in a 3 bedroom apartment. Livingroom is at the right as you go in. Followed by room 1, then room 2 and right before the kitchen at the end is room 3(mine). I Have an apple tv in the living room, a 21" iMac and a time capsule that I use only as an airport base. I also keep a macbook in the livingroom. In my bedroom, room 3, I have my 27"iMac. Everything is connected to the Time Capsule for wifi as well as a couple of iphones and an ipod touch. Everything is updated with the latest software updates.
My problem is that every time I try syncing my apple tv with my 27" iMac, the time capsule looses the wifi connection and immediately starts blinking orange. I have to restart the time capsule by unplugging it and then the wifi connection is restored. For a while now I've been using a 50' ethernet cable that connects the 27" imac and the time capsule with the wifi off on the imac. This is the only way the wifi connection isn't affected when I sync to the appletv. I've tried resetting and restoring the time capsule several times without helping the issue. I also tried all 11 channels on the wifi connection as well as automatic setting for the channel but that doesn't seem to help. I clean installed snow leopard on my 27" iMac as well with no luck. At this time I don't know what to do, any help would be appreciated. I'm really tired of having that cable laying around. Thanks

please read this about possible sources of _*wireless interference*_, which may well be your problem.
wireless signals, if they have to travel over long distances or through obstacles (such as concrete walls or steel structures), will lose power. especially on the 5 GHz band you virtually need +line by sight+ in order to get a clean and reliable signal.
consequently, many users (including myself) resort to hardwired connections where possible. except my two airport express units and my iPod Touch, i have all my equipment hardwired to my TC.
additionally, syncing large amounts of data between devices heavily taxes your wireless bandwidth.
    best of luck !

  • Files (music/videos) sync between devices and Mac

Hi all. Hope you would be able to help.
I have iOS devices (iPhone and iPod touch) and a Macbook Pro. Basically, I would like to sync all my media files to my iPod touch (i.e. all my music and videos) but only a few albums to my iPhone (due to limited iPhone storage and its main use being for other apps and communication).
Sync between Macbook Pro and iPod touch is perfectly fine and straight forward - just syncing all files between the 2. However, when I connect my iPhone to the Macbook Pro, I know there is an option which I can sync specific albums but if I connect the iPhone the second time, will the Macbook Pro recognizes that there are only a few albums in my iPhone and decides to wipe out the rest of the albums in the music library? I just want to make sure that the Macbook Pro recognizes the 2 devices as 2 "separate devices" and I am able to sync how many files I want for specific devices whilst my Macbook Pro preserves all the media files. Can anyone guide me how to make sure the above operation on iTunes?
    Many thanks.

I was just looking at this again and noticed something strange.
Under the iCloud section of the Settings on my iPad, I don't have a "Documents and Data" option.  Essentially, every time I use a program that wants to access iCloud for documents, that program's individual settings are reset to not use iCloud.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks again for any help.

  • Strobing effect in Music Videos

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6j4f8cHBIM&list=ALHTd1VmZQRNptgo4ed0biMPKtTTpYcIE_&index=6 &feature=plcp
    Hello All
I have seen this effects numerous times in music videos and TV commercials where 2 images very quickly alternate.  I recreated the effect by making hold keyframes with 0 and 100 opacity values on the top layer.
At about 53 seconds into the video the strobing sequence is using 3 different clips.  I was wondering is there an expression that can do this.  Also in the music video the strobing APPEARS to be in sync with drums,  so I was thinking that there must be keyframes created by an audio amplitude setting in a plug-in like BeatReactor or SoundKeys.
I'm also assuming that this effect would be best done in AE instead of Premiere maybe I'm wrong and it is just one frame of video showing on two or three different layers in Premiere
Would love to know the various ways this effect could be achieved and which you consider the method to use.
    Thanks in Advance
    On a Mac CS5.5  OS 10.6.8

You are aware that there is a Strobe effect in AE, I hope, and that likewise, the Blend effect can avoid adding tons of layers.... Can't see your video due to copyright restrictions here in Germany, but I'm sure using these 2 effects may help a lot. For audio (and markers) triggering, refer to this:

  • Time capsule security

    Macbook Pro
    Time Capsule
    Apple TV
    Ipad
    Iphone
    Hello all,
I spent quite a lot of time (not a geek but not inexperienced) setting my Time Capsule up as a back up drive and a store for my DVD's so I could access them from my ipad and Iphon via FileBrowser. It all works fine except.....
I fixed my friends Sony Vaio Laptop running Windows 7 (sorry about that but he hasn't seen the light yet!) and after fixing it I happened to be poking around (I was connected to my Sky Router) and clicked Network, this brought up my Time Capsule. When I see it with my Mac and FileBrowser I have to enter a username and password. Well I clicked it and I could browse through the whole of my Time Capsule, photos videos etc without entering a user name or password!! It even plays my movies!
    How can this be??
I do not have wireless enabled on the TC, as I said I had connected the Sony to my sky router not via wireless using the TC.
File sharing is enabled on my TC but "With TC Password" and as I say from my Mac I cant access it without a password so please help as as it stands anyone else can see my files?
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help
    Regards
    Richard
    (AppleMad)

By guest, I mean the guest access to the hard disk.. not wireless..
In your setup the TC is able to be accessed because it is bridged.. the connection to the sky router is fine as that gives an ip address that allows access to the TC.
Did you happen to load airport utility or bonjour for windows.. or was it already there?
Give us screen shot of the file sharing page in the disk utility.
With the guest access to read or read and write anybody can access the TC. Even if you have a disk password set.

  • Using time capsule as an HD

I helped a friend out recently and am wondering if I made the wrong decision... Here's the situation:
Friend bought an iMac via the Apple store and also bought a time capsule. A mac specialist came to his home. He had almost a tb of video, so time machine made one copy and failed to backup since that date. This resulted in a very slow machine.
He asked me to help out. I disabled Time Machine and automatic backups. We renamed his Time Capsule to "Videos" or something similar and I created a shortcut to that folder on his desktop so he could quickly access. The long terms solution would be for him to get a larger external HD to house these files....
We copied videos to that folder and he purged from his HD to free up the space. He had a ton of recent items that needed to be imported. He went on vacation and came home. He says that he couldn't access that video folder. He turned his time capsule on and states that it started to create a backup copy (leading me to believe we didn't turn off time machine). The worry is that 10 years of memories have been wiped.
My question: Does time capsule initalize itself after it is turned off? Also, was it improper to use this as a temporary holding place for these files?
If so, does anybody know anyone who may be able to provide disaster recovery?! I hope I didn't lose my friends memories as I would feel more horrible than I do now...

No, the TC will never erase files itself.. TM can erase files within the sparsebundle but will not erase files on the TC.. of course you did the wrong thing.. you moved his folders to a single location without backup.. TC is a backup device not a NAS.
Now what form are these files in.. are they lots of individual files.. that is what I would hope.. or did you move a library.. itunes or maybe imovie has a library.. moving libraries is fraught with danger. A corruption on a file corrupts the library.
I presume he is running Lion.. it has many issues with networking.. and the TC itself can have issues.. so spend some time working at this..
    1. Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet.. if it is using wireless.
    2. Turn off all other networking in the computer.
    3. Reset the TC by holding in the reset button for 10sec. This will do nothing to the contents of the hard disk in the TC.
    4. Once the TC boots make sure airport utility is able to find it.. and mount the hard disk in finder.
    5. If the files are not there.. you are in strife.. but not hopeless.
The next bits get harder.. but don't use the TC at all.
Firstly the files might still be in the TM backup you mentioned. See if you can recover them from there.
I am hoping you did not wipe the TC before moving the files.
To do anything further you need the hard disk out of the TC.. sorry this will void warranty but Apple will not help.. a store might help and you can ask but most of the official apple repair network are under orders to not open them.
A data recovery expert can also do this.
But it might be simple. Open the TC .. remove the hard disk.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Replacing-Apple-Time-Capsule-HDD/2750/1
Put it in a USB cradle and plug into the computer.
See if you can access the files.. they might magically turn up.. if not..
Is the trash bin on the disk full.. maybe they went into the trash?? Deleted from the wrong disk??
Now connected to the computer the disk utiity will work and you can run verfiy on the disk.
See if the data partition will mount.. there should be 3 partitions on the TC disk.. two of them are tiny stores for current settings and a cache/swap. The main data partition may or may not mount. If it fails to mount you cannot verify.. but that tells you the problem is a bad disk. This is not surprising.. they are cheap green WD. And they do nasty things to themselves all the time.
Buy a disk recovery utility.. DiskWarrior being the Mac popular one, although I see Data Rescue 3 has IMHO a better way of recovering files by copying them to another location. And there is no free demo I can find for disk warrior.
Anyway.. you have to make up your mind whether to try yourself or pursue the more expensive pro recovery route. As long as you don't do silly stuff.. make changes to the drive.. copy anything to the drive. Recovery should be possible even if you fail after trying.

  • Batch classify music videos

Is there anyway do a whole Batch of Music Videos and label them all at 1 time as music videos instead of 1 at a time??
I have about 22 movies and 40 or so music videos on my ipod. Currently they are all classified as "movies" in the video tab when you right click on a single video or movie. I'd like to reclassify the videos as video but would prefer to do them all in a batch like everything else you can do as a batch, but it seems the apple guys forgot to add video classification in their batch processes.
So, is there any way to classify all my music videos as such in iTunes without having to do them one at a time?

Go to this website--there are hundreds of applescripts to do anything in iTunes: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/
