Time Capsule must be reset every 10-15 min

We lose our internet every 10-15 minutes and must reset the router. The weird thing is that Windows systems are not affected, only our IMAC. Has anyone run into anything like this before?

Thanks for this thought- I have been having the same problem in my office with frequently dropped connection, and have suspected all along that it was the work of the dread time capsule!! i've heard nothing but complaints about how it works.
i'll also be switching back to the airport extreme as the main base station for the office, since we never had any problems with it, and see if I can't get the Time Capsule to act as a wireless print server/hard drive as well.

I belive that the trigger is being changed on the io board, but cannot manage to reset it.
The reset process takes in the order of 0.1 sec, and since this is a time critical application, i want to get the scanning function working again faster

Dear Ian. Thank you for your reply. The problem appears to be that the scan trigger(s) are stopped, or something, by the use of the AI_setup instruction. The sytstem works perfectly until this instruction is used. My problem is in understanding what has happened since the help seems to give no detail on any interconnection between the scan system and the external analog trigger system. I have tried to reconnect the triggers, but so far unsucessfuly

  • Time Capsule will not reset

I'm trying to delete old user devices from my access control list, but after I remove them, the Time Capsule will not reset properly.  After I delete one of the devices, click on Update, the time capsule gets stuck during the update and never fully resets.  If I pull the plug and restart the time capsule, it reverts back to it's previous state with the devices still in the access list.  Is anyone having this trouble?

    Dear Stephen,
I have the same problem and I found this thread describing the same thing on another forum. Each time I try to change any setting this happens (i.e., TC won't reset and I have to unplug it before I can use it again).
When the postings in the mentioned thread are any indication no reset (hard or soft) will have any lasting effect. But of course, I will try to reconfigure and see what happens.
Any solution or localization of where the source of the problem (firm-/soft-/ or hardware) would be highly appreciated:)
    Best
    Rene

Why does the The Time Capsule of my neighbour appears and not mine?  I tried everything.
What generation is your neighbour's and what generation is yours??
Sometimes the changes in the TC and firmware can make wireless fail.. also location is important.. the location of your neighbours might be better than yours.. his also might interfere with yours.. set a fixed channel and try the various channels.
Can I use the Capsule as merely a back up without making use of Wifi?  By connecting by cable to the computer?
Sure, but you need to work out how the network is going to work.. if you are still picking up network from wireless.. then set static ip for the TC in a different IP range.. set no gateway (router ip) or dns and it will work just fine.

  • Using Time Capsule with Windows 7. Won't work when modem connected directly to Time Capsule, must be connected through another router.

Apple Time Capsule working with Windows 7 PC will not work when modem is connected directly to the Time Capsule.  Only when a Cisco Linksystem is connnected inbetween the modem and the Time Capsule.

Sorry but it needs much more specific info than this..
What modem? Is it cable or adsl or some other?? Is it pure modem or broadband router included?
Cable has specific issues different to adsl.
If you used to use the Cisco/linksys router.. and have not reset the cable modem it will not work. Turn off the cable modem.. it must be powered down.. if battery backup drop out the battery. Remove the coax cable.. get it off. Power down everything else in the network.
Plug in the modem to the TC wan port.
Power up the modem.. wait 2min
Power up the TC.. wait 2min
    Power up the clients.
If it has worked you will now be able to open the airport utility on the windows computer and see the TC has a public ip on the WAN port. If not redo the whole thing but leave the modem off.. 15min.. 1 hour.. 1 day.. ring the cable company and ask them to reset. Usually a few minutes is enough.
If you have a modem with combined router.. then bridge the TC. Just google search it.
For other combos.. tell us specifics..

  • HT201250 My MacBook is full.  I want to 'save' (backup) everything on my Time Capsule and then reset my MacBook to factory settings so it is empty again.  Can I access my files on the TC without restoring the whole thing to my MacBook?

I also bought a WD My Book 2T external hard drive, but I think I wasted my money.  The thing is not easy to navigate.  I bought it because I didn't understand (and still don't really) how the Time Capsule works.  I want to be able to basically 'reformat' my MacBook so it is empty, but have all my current stuff accessable so that if I want to find a photo or file, I don't have to restore the entire thing back onto my MacBook.

Then what you want is a Carbon Copy Cloner of your entire OS X boot partition which includes everything (OS X, programs and files) and is hold the option key bootable at boot up (wired or built in keyboard) this way you can boot from it or use Migration or Setup Assistant against it, or access it directly from any computer capable of reading the HFS+ format (Windows PC needs MacDrive installed)
It's like the ultimate backup system, just blows TimeMachine and TimeCapsule away completely in almost every manner.
You need another backup anyway in case TC wasn't doing it's job. With the clone you can check it out completely before erasing the original drive too.
    Most commonly used backup methods
So you need a blank powered external drive formatted Partition: 1 option: GUID and format OS X extended journaled in Disk Utility, use the Erase > Secure >Zero (or middle selection in 10.7+) and allow that work, may take a few hours but it's good for all new drives to be done once.
Next download CCC and select your boot drive and clone it to the external drive, then when it's finished you hold the option key down (wired or built in keyboard) and while booting up (Startup manager) to select the clone to boot from and check it out.
Next you need to use Disk Utility (on the clone) and select the Macintosh HD partition of the internal drive and use the Secure Zero Erase (or middle selection) and allow that to work, it will scrub your drive of everything.
Next you install OS X again.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
How to reinstall just OS X or erase/install OS X
Next you install your free iLife and third party programs from original sources
Restoring your Free iLife (iPhoto, iMovie etc)
Then you can cherry pick just want you want off the clone drive.

  • Will I lose all of my documents saved on my Time Capsule if I reset it in order to get the Airport wireless router working again?

Hello I am having problems with my Time Capsule (2nd Gen) and being able to get the wireless signal working throughout my house.  I have concluded the only step I need to try to fix this is to reset the Time Capsule.
My concern is that if I reset the capsule I will lose all of the documents off of the external hard drive of the Time Capsule.  Will this happen?
Is there anyway to avoid losing these files, or is there some way to attach a USB cord to the Time Capsule and be able to retrieve my files?
Thanks for any help out there.

Correct.. no files are lost in resets..
Plug the TC straight into the computer by ethernet.. use a LAN port of the TC. <-->
    Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.
When it comes backup the TC will have an IP of 10.0.1.1 and the computer will be 10.0.1.2
You can access all your files on the TC.. with very minimal setup.. but Mavericks can be a right royal pain.
If the disk doesn't show up in Finder.. manually mount it.
    Go, Connect to Server..
AFP://10.0.1.1 and when the computer finds the resource it will ask for a password.. type in public unless you changed it.
You should now be able to access the files.
I recommend if you have important stuff on the TC you do not want to lose.. get a USB (or faster) drive today.. plug it into the computer and make a backup.. the TC is not adequate as a NAS or file server as it has no ability to either backup itself or even have TM back it up.

  • Time Capsule not backing up every hour

It seems that my time machine has a mind of it's own and backs up almost anytime it wants to. An example would be 4 backups in the same hour. thanks for your help!

    Reset Time Machine as follows:
Open System Preferences and open Time Machine
    Click Change Disk
Click your Time Capsule to highlight it
    Click Use for Backups
Normally backups will start up again automatically after 30-60 minutes. If not, click the clock shaped Time Capsule icon at the top of your screen to manually start backups again.
See if that helps. Do you have any applications like Entourage, Aperture, VM Fusion or Parallels on your computer? These and other files like them have a "monolithic" file structure. What this means is that any change made to the program will result in the entire database being backed up.
For example, if you are using Entourage and make only one small change to an email, the entire database will be backed up. This takes up a lot of space on your backup drive, not to mention time.

  • My time Capsule Starts from scratch every time it is interrupted!

First I tried doing the initial backup wirelessly. After 48 hours I had 30 GB of my 54 GB. Then we had a power outage. When the power came back, I clicked on ´backup now`, but it started from scratch. So I interrupted it and set up TC through Ethernet. I had gotten up to 16 GB when I went to bed. The next morning, a message said the connection had been lost. I fiddled with the wires, and then the backup started AGAIN from scratch. I am now in my fourth backup and it is always starting from zero. The thing is, the size of the Time Capsule keeps getting smaller, (only 383 of 461 GB available) evidence of the fact that the backups ARE IN THERE- just time machine does not seem to recognize them.
    Help?

Experienced the same issue with an Apple Time Capsule 802.11n (1st Generation, warranty replacement) connected to iMac (Late 2009) running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8. This Time Capsule was configured solely as the Time Machine backup drive, no Wi-Fi (Wireless Mode: Off). The hard drive would spin up every minute or so for no apparent reason. Tried disconnecting/reconnecting Time Capsule, power off reboot of both Time Capsule and iMac to no avail. Only solution that worked was to downgrade firmware to 7.5.2 using latest Snow Leopard AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
For those that need to know how to do this, run AirPort Utility application in /Application/Utilities folder, click Manual Setup, and click on the word Version in the list, in the dialog box select 7.5.2 from drop-down menu, click OK, and click Update and allow Time Capsule to restart.

  • Time Capsule HD turn on every 10 minutes.  Normal operation?

The hard drive in my time capsule spins up (turn on) about every 10 minutes and stays on for about 5 minutes before turning itself off. During this "power cycle" the hard drive is not doing any backup (according to the Time Machine preferences panel and menu bar icon). Rather, the hard drive just seems to be spinning up every 10 minutes, staying on for about 5 minutes, then powering itself down again. I checked the Time Machine specs and it says the program backup interval is a backup every hour. So I'm wondering why my HD powers up every 10 minutes.
This is fairly annoying hard drive behavior as A) it's not needed for backups, just seems to be extraneous hard drive spinning, and B) it's annoying as the hard drive, while quiet, is not silent. I would assume this behavior is not good for the lifespan of the disk either, but I may be wrong.
Has anyone else been seeing this hard drive cycle behavior? Any fixes to make the hard drive just spin up when needed (for the hourly backups)?

Well, to answer my own question above. I did the following:
    - Return the unit for another one at the Apple store
The new TC does not stop and start every 5-10 minutes. It backs up every hour as advertised
If this is not an option for you, try the following:
    - disable any anti-virus program you have (at least for initial backup). Caused a huge increase in throughput for my initial backup
    - switch to 802.11N only mode (wide band) for the router settings
Those were the only two settings/changes I made with the new unit. Not sure if I had a defective initial unit, or one of the two fixes above made a difference. Good luck.

  • Time Capsule will not reset - just flashes yellow

I have a 2 TB Time Capsule that will not reset - it just flashes yellow.
I have tried all the various reset options, left the unit uplugged overnight and all I get is a blinking yellow light.
Via airport the only option that I see is to set up a wireless network, there is no configuration window for the time capsule. I am not using this a wireless device, I have a comcast modem for that. It is being used for backup only.
When I select time machine under system settings, I can see the drive. I can select it but it will not accept the password. I have verified that I am using the correct password from the keychains utility.
I don't know if this is related, but I named the capsule TMBackUp and it shows that name in disk selection list, but when I select to use it for backups and it asks for the password (which does not work) it says, Enter your password for the server "Time Capsule d629db" so that Time Machine can access it. I don't know if the name differenc is even relevant, but thought I should mention it.
I really suspect that it has something to do with the ip address. Up until recently I have had ip addresses that were similar to 192.x.x.x, now I have ip addresses that are similar to 10.0.0.x. I just resolved an issue that this ip change was causing with two tivo units. So I assume the issue with the time capsule is something similar. My problem is that I see no interface with the time capsule to check the ip address that it has been assigned.
I am willing to wipe everything to start over, I just can't figure out how to get there.
I would appreciate any help that anyone can offer.
    Thank you.

I have a 2 TB Time Capsule that will not reset - it just flashes yellow.
The Time Capsule will flash amber when it has been reset. This is normal. A reset takes the Time Capsule back to its original factory default settings.
This is what you have done.
You will need to set up the Time Capsule again just like you did when you originally installed it on your network.
You can use the same name for the Time Capsule and passwords that you used previously, if you wish.
You do not need to "wipe" the Time Capsule hard drive. Your backups will continue from their previous point once you have the Time Capsule reconfigured to operate on your network.

  • I got a time capsule 3T and Drops every other moment(we have at least 7 laptops, 5iphones and 2iTV....why it drops down all the time

MANY PEOPLE HAVE WORK ON THIS TIME CAPSULE AND NOBODY GET TO FIXIT::::::::IT DROPS DOWN ALMOST EVERYDAY!!!! ITS A BIG 3T MACHINE......WE KNOW THAT CUTTING THE 20 CONNECTIONS DOWN HELPS BUT ITS A 3T MACHINE......IN THOSE 20 CONNECTIONS ARE 7 OR 8 LAPTOPS LIKE 6 PHONES 2 ipads and like 4 iTV

Exactly which model is it? The new AC or the previous Gen4?
What role does the TC take in the network? What is the broadband modem and how is the TC connected?
If many people have worked on it.. it is doubtful we are going to fix it with anything offered here.
Have you taken it back to Apple store for testing or replacement under warranty?
The new AC one desperately needs a firmware update to fix some of the issues.. and I have no idea what you have tried. But my standard list is as follows.
    1. Factory reset.
    2. All names short, (2-20 characters), no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    3. Test via ethernet.. if this issue is purely wireless or is there a drop out on the WAN connection.
    4. Set all wireless manually.. that means a different name for 5ghz.. and fix the channels and test at least 11, 6, 1 on 2.4ghz and somewhere in 36-46 and >100 for 5ghz.
    5. Test wireless via a software like istumbler for levels and consistency.
No luck with any of that take it back or ring apple to help you.
NOTE.. there are loads of threads with this issue.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5140686?tstart=0
That is the first one I saw.. but also on the airport area.. plenty of people are having serious issues with iphones..
If this is new ie within 14days just return it for now. Get something that is known to be stable.

  • My mouse becomes impaired when time capsule starts backing up (every hour); anyone hav a remedy?

My mouse beccoommmmes impaired when time capsssule starts backing up (eevery hour). Is there a remedy for this?

    UPDATE:
I think I've found a solution.... Though I'm a bit reluctant to post it already because I'd really like to see if it works over time... Anyway, here is the interesting post I found by Mr. Caliostro:
... sure, go into your Airport Utility application, inside Utilities inside Applications. Click on Manual Setup when your TC appears in the window. Click on the Wireless tab. You will find a pulldown menu there called Channel. Select your channel & Update your TC settings. I set mine to channel 1 to try it, & it made a tiny improvement. How close is your TC to your mac? Does the interference reduce if you ove further away? Perhaps swapping from 802.11g/n to 802.11n or vice-versa, may help? (depending if your setup can work on 11n-only). Perhaps switching from 2.5ghz to 5ghz or vice-versa may help? both 11n & 11g can work at 5ghz as well as 2.5ghz... Let me know how you go!
I set the 5GHz channel to 48 and the 2.4GHz to 1. Of course I changed these settings completely randomly since I don't know anything about these things but it actually seems to work pretty fine! No more sluggish mouse during Time Capsule back ups!

  • How do I combine my content from 3 external hd's and my 1 Mac Mini to my new Time Capsule (which is connected to my Mac Mini) and not have to use my external hd's again? My Mac Mini wont hold all the content on the external hd's.

My 3 external hd's are 500GB (total 1.5TB) and my Mac Mini is 500GB (Time Capsule is connected to this). I want to be able to have all the content from all these sources stored on my Time Capsule as if I only had 1 external drive. Is this possible? It is my understanding that when Time Machine backs up my Mac Mini I have to have my external drives connected since my Mac Mini does not have enough space on it to hold all the content on the exgternal hd's. I can only connect 1 external hard drive at a time and I want to get rid of them and consolidate.
And having to go back in time to search for files on 1 external hard drive and then back in time for the other external hard drive is not the most efficient thing to do. I would like it all in one place.
    Thank you for your help!!

  • Extreme Must Be Reset Every 45 minutes or so--HELP!

My Airport Extreme is showing a solid green light. But every 45 minutes (or so) I must pull the power to get it working again. Very frustrating!!
I'm on Tiger. I read about downgrading firmware but have no idea how to do that.
    Help

You can read this website for instruction:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070831092133631
Also, hold down option key when you are inside Airport Utility menu, select Check For Updates, it will allow you to download older version as well in case you don't have the firmware on your computer.
I hope that helps. I have no problem running Version 7.2 on my Airport Extreme Base Station (Gigabit), but 7.2.1 will crash the router randomly every few hours or every few minutes. Also, NAT doesn't seems to work.
Another way is to disable IPV6 function (Select Link Local Only in IPV6 Mode option under Advanced->IPv6) if you are running 7.2.1. It works as well. But I rather stick with older version that works for now. You get to choose.
