Time Capsule & NAS Multi-User Security Question

I want to know how time capsule manages multiple users backing up to the internal or USB drive attached to it. I understand that, in general, time machine uses all the drive's space, and just deletes the oldest backups, is this correct with the Time Capsule too? if so, how does every user get a fair share of the backup space? And if multiple users backup to the same drive (same Time Capsule), is there any security, or could someone just run the migration assistant to steal another user's data?
Oh, and if you backup to the drive attached to the capsule via USB, what do you see when you take that drive and plug it into your computer directly, is it like any time machine backup, or is it formated differently, like if there are multiple people backing up, is each person's backup stored in a password protected growing disk image or something? That would be great if it worked that way, where it would require a password to restore from the backup...

nobody?

The page that you posted from has instructions for how to reset them i.e. if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then steps 1 to 5 half-way down that page should give you a reset link.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple in your country to get the questions reset (these are user-to-user forums).

When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • Time Capsule with multiple users. Data Safe?

    Hi.
I was just wondering if the I use Time Capsule with multiple users (multiple macs) I believe the backups are all seperated and password protected. Am I right?
But what about the migration assistant? Doesn't the migration assistant help you to transfer your data from one mac to your new one without asking for a password? So wouldn't it be easy to use the migration assistant to get data of another time capsul backup?
At the work place of my girlfriend they are using time capsul, and I'm not sure if I would advise her to backup her data to that timecapsule. Ok you can exclude folders, but not the mailaccount.

But isn't it possible to transfer data from an old user account to a new account with a different name? Wouldn't that overide the password prompt?
No more or less than on your Mac.
I mean I understand that if you migrate a user account from one mac to another you wouldn't gain access to the home folder of that user, but as I understood the migration assistant it is possible to migrate data to a folder of your choice. I did not try it yet but that's what I (maybe misunderstood) read here http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/19.html
No. You can select which user accounts to transfer, but you can't transfer one user's data to another.

  • Question to the Power Users RE: Time Capsule Disk Mgmt and Security

I was real excited to get the Time Capsule, but now since I have it I have to say its lack of security and disk management features are disappointing.
I am thinking of giving up on Time Machine backups completely (I have never been thrilled with TM) and using the Backup 3.0 that is available to .Mac users. If I backup one machine using TM to the TC, I can login from a different machine and modify/delete the backups, this is not secure from accidental or malicious access.
What I am hoping to do is to create logical partitions on the drive and use a program like PGP to encrypt the disk. This so far has been a real pain in the @$$ because of the lack of disk mgmt with the TC.
I have used the OS X disk utility to create a disk image (takes forever) and it does not automagically mount itself, so PGP will not recognize it is a disk. I then decided to start over and use the Airport Utility to erase the disk (this has been running for about 12 hours now, and is still flashing amber). I am not sure if this TC is DOA or just slow as cr@p.
If anyone has any ideas on how to make an out of the box TC more secure, please share.

Have you been able to get all of your applications to recognize the disk image as a place to save/create/modify files?
All applications? Only tried some - but since I was able to copy 56GB of iTunes content to the drive and access it with TuneRanger - I am fairly certain it is universally available.
With the encrypted disk image, can you decrypt that image from another machine with a passphrase? I believe the answer is no, which is why I want to use PGP to encrypt the disk image.
I believe the image is not machine restricted. The only encrypted image I have is on a USB memory stick. I will have to try and open it on my other mac.
I did create a 50GB disk image successfully, however I changed my mind and decided I wanted to create an image using the entire TC disk.
I deleted the disk image I had created, as well as the TM backups on the disk. I then used the Airport Utility to do a "quick" erase of the disk, and now 36 hours later it is still erasing the disk.
    That sounds wrong.

  • Time Capsule & U-Verse - Set Up Questions

I've got AT&T U-Verse and want to use Time Capsule for my Macs, iPhones, and iPads (pretty much everything but my TV's - I'll let those continue to run through U-Verse).
I want to set up my Time Capsule so that I maximize speed for the aforementioned Apple devices.  However, I do not know what to do when asked to set up my network by Airport Utility.  Do I create a new wireless network?  Do I replace my base station or wireless router?  Do I join my current network?
I was thinking that I would have a network for my U-Verse devices and a network for my Apple devices.  Can I do this?  Is this my best option?  Will I get the most out of Time Capsule's abilities?
    Thank you for your help.

Having posted your question.. several other posts come up on the right side.. the top one pretty much answers your question rather than me doing it again.

Using search is a good plan before posting.
In my opinion just set the TC to bridge, plug it via ethernet into the existing router. That is the best for all the devices.. and creates one flat network. You can use either the TC or the existing router wireless if it has it.. it makes no difference. Just use the strongest signal in that area of the house. So you can set them up with the same wireless name and same security but use a different channel.. this means using manual setup for wireless.

  • Setting up a Time Capsule and dealing with security

    Here's an interesting problem/question.
I had very little trouble setting up my TC on my MPB wirelessly. However, my old PB G4 800Mhz with the original airport card couldn't connect. It would keep timing out. Finally, I called Tech Support and think it managed to stump even the tech support. There was a point the TC wouldn't even work with the MBP. Finally, I unplugged the TC, did a hardware reset then a software reset. In factory default mode, with no security, this PB can connect. However, if I turn on any form of security (WEP,WPA, anything), the PB can't connect.
Has anyone come across an issue like this? And how did you solve it? Is this clear enough?

    2) What's the difference between joining a network and extending it? Wouldn't joining a network extend its range?
When joining an existing wireless network, an AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is acting just like any other wireless client (laptop, desktop, printer, etc.); its basic router functions are disabled. When extending an existing wireless network it will "extend" the network connectivity (including Internet access if available) from the base station. The latter is called a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). With the introduction of the 802.11n base stations another method of extending a wireless network was also introduced. This new method retains a 802.11n wireless network by only working with another 802.11n AirPort, whereas a WDS will only operate in 802.11g.
    4) Is there any difference between WEP (Transitional Security Network) on the Time Capsule and WEP 128 bit on the Airport Express?
Sort of. WEP Transitional is a "hybrid" version of WEP that's supported on 802.11n networks that will have 802.11b/g WEP clients. WEP 128-bit is only available in either the 802.11b/g-compatible, 802.11g only or 802.11b only radio modes.

  • Time capsule with multiple users full

I'm helping a client with their full time capsule. They have about 6 computers backing up to one time capsule. Some of the computers still have backups from a year and a half ago. One of the computers only has one backup from a couple weeks ago.
Now, the computer which has one backup, now has more stuff and there's not enough space. If these other computers with backups from a year and a half ago deleted some of their really old stuff, it seems there would be room. And I thought that's what time machine was supposed to do, keep the really old stuff until there's no more room and then just keep the most recent stuff.
I guess the issue is that the time capsule can't decide for itself to delete other user's old backups. So my question is: how can I delete their old backups? This would be simple on a regular time machine drive, but the darned obfuscated sparsebundles make this seemingly impossible.
Is my best bet to just delete the complete backup from the computers with really old backups and then just re-backup both computers?
    thanks,
    -trav

Correct, although it appears to be intentional. Many users would be outraged if their backups were deleted by someone else's Mac!

See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

That's a lot of Macs on one Time Capsule. One possibility would be to connect a USB drive to the TC and let some of those Macs back up to it.

  • Time Capsule set up with secure business laptop

I just purchased a Time Capsule and am seeking suggestions on how to set it up based on the following circumstances:
In addition to multiple personal laptops/computers, I work from home and have a business laptop that is highly secure and do not have the ability to download AirPort (as suggested within the set up manual).  In addition, I am certain there will be issues with the internal Time Capsule hard drive (since my business computer has the ability to detect and shut down all unauthorized external components as a violation of information - Flash drive, memory stick, etc. I can't even use the laptop to charge a cell phone!).  Is it possible to use the Time Machine as my wireless router without downloading AirPort?  And is possible to set up so that this business computer does not read or have access to the hard drive?  Note:  My business laptop is also connected to a highly encrypted VPN/LAN router (which is than connected into my existing wireless router).
I see that it is possible to connect the Time Capsule into an existing network.  Is this done by just connecting a ethernet cable between the Time Capsule and current Router.  Any other special set up info needed?  Does this just turn the Time Capsule into a hard drive and disable the wireless router fuctionality?  By setting up this way, does it slow down the transfer rate?
Any computer guru suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First, don't confuse "Time Capsule", an Apple Wi-Fi base station, with "Time Machine", backup software included with OS X since version 10.5.  Airport Utility is only needed to configure a Time Capsule.  You'd only need it on one of your computers.
I see that it is possible to connect the Time Capsule into an existing network.  Is this done by just connecting a ethernet cable between the Time Capsule and current Router.
    That's one way.

Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, you might want to use AirPort Utility to turn off wireless operation and put it into "bridge mode".  You could also configure a "roaming network".
By setting up this way, does it slow down the transfer rate?
    Between what and what?

  • Time Capsule timeouts when accessing secure web pages, downloading apps, backing up to iCloud, etc.

Last week I upgraded my broadband connection to fibre, requiring me to install a different router because the Draytek one I had in place was not suitable, so I went for a Time Capsule.  My other devices are a 13” MacBook Air, an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4.
Web browsing performance was immediately fantastic, with consistent readings on the Mac of 12ms ping, 35Mbps+ download speed and 1.5Mbps+ upload speed.  One oddity I did notice when running a speed test (using speedtest.net), but which I didn’t think about much at the time, is the time taken between finishing the download test and starting the upload test.  In my previous experience there would be only a few seconds between them, but on my new fibre connection through Time Capsule it takes anything from 30 seconds to a minute for the upload test to begin.
However, a few days ago I tried to download some app updates in iTunes to the Mac, but after a wait I received a message that the network connection had timed out.  I tried again multiple times and each time the result was the same.
I then Googled the problem to see what might be causing it, but I found I was not able to access any results from the Apple Support Communities pages because the browser would time out with a network connection error, or they would take an absolute age to load. Subsequently, I have also discovered that I cannot backup my iOS devices to iCloud (it tries for ages and then says there was an error), I cannot log in to any online accounts (the browser eventually times out with a network connection error) and I cannot send email from the mailbox that syncs with my work Exchange account.  I have also realised that the Apple Support Communities pages are secure, so the common theme seems to be there is a problem accessing anything that requires security/authentication/encryption.
This is not a Wi-Fi issue as it is the same when I switch off Wi-Fi on the MBA and attach it to the router via an Ethernet cable.
It is also not a Mac/iPad issue, as both function normally on my work Wi-Fi network.
I have reached the end of my limited technical tether, so does anybody have any suggestions please?

    Hi,
Many thanks for taking the time to respond.
Bizarrely, after more than a week of problems and time wasted in trying to resolve them, I arrived home from work today to find that everything is working perfectly. The network is exactly as it has been all week and when I called my ISP they said they had changed nothing on the line, so it's a complete mystery.
I'm happy it's working, but it would have been nice to understand what caused the problem, just in case it happens again.
Anyway, thanks again and sorry for wasting your time.

  • Time Capsule: Files lost after Secure Shared Disk: with accounts

I Changed the Disks: Secure Shared Disk option to 'with accounts' on my Time Capsule and now all files are invisible. It looks the files must be still on the disks because of the amount of free/used bytes used that is displayed.
How can I restore the 'old' files?

Restore the old files by removing the accounts.. ie press and hold reset.. once you go back to a reset all files are available again anyway so the security is illusionary.
If you want to secure files encrypt them.
BTW the old airport utility would have warned you that what you were doing will stop access to your files.
Of course the latest toyland utility probably showed you nothing.
Never start accounts with files on the TC.. you should offload them.. create accounts then load them back.. to the illusion of security at least.

  • Time capsule & nas

Hi, I have a time capsule that I am planing to give to a friend, but he has a hard drive that he wants to use in it.
So I was wondering if I could remove my current hard drive, put it in to my nas, and then continue using it as a time machine backup location?? (Without wiping it)
    Thanks!

    This will not be possible.
You can remove your hard disk from the TC and your friend can indeed install his hard disk.. it would be very unusual for a hard drive not to work..
But the format of the drive in the TC is very specific to the TC.. it has 2 small partitions and the main data partition .. all formatted HFS+
Your NAS.. whatever brand that happens to be will need a disk in its native format. Almost nothing on the market uses HFS+.. Your NAS would also have to support Time Machine which it may or may not do.. but it sure will not support it with the TC hard disk unless you reformat it which implies wiping it.
If you have another drive eg USB drive you can archive off the existing backup from the TC.. put the drive in the new NAS and then if it is TM compatible copy the old sparsebundle to it.. but you are starting to get longer and longer.. long shots.

If you have a rescue email address (an alternate email address is different) on your account then you can use that to reset them : http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT6170
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will have to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.

  • Multi-user security & privacy

I understand that there have been discussions concerning security and privacy using the iPad.  Many have described issues with multiple e-mail accounts.  The reality is that many of the items, from Safari bookmarks to iBook (and other applications) selections also put the owner of those items at risk.  How can we open a meaningful dialog with the iOS development team and Apple management to consider ways to strengthen personal security and privacy?  My vote would be to (as fully as possible) mimic the multi-user ability of the Mac OSX itself.  Granted, application developers would also have to develop their applications to play in that sandbox, and each "unique" user would eat up xxx mbytes of the available iPad.

  • Time Capsule/NAS help!

Ok. Just upgraded the old Airport Extreme to a time capsule.
Previously, had a LaCie ED Mini NAS set up via ethernet/wan on the extreme. I've got it running the same on the TC, but my established folders aren't showing up on the EDMini in finder. I can navigate to them via http/ftp directly to the EDMini, but not through finder.
Any Ideas? All of my iTunes library is on this thing, so I'd realllllllly like to get it working again.

  • Time Capsule & Airport Express Network Security

I am using my Time Capsule to set up my home wireless network and have extended the network using an Airport Express. Does WPA have to be set on both units (as I have done) or just the Time Capsule for the network to be secure? Since setting up WPA my iPod Touch has had more difficulty connecting and network range seems to have shrunk!

Yes since the AirPort Express (AX) is extending the network it must have the same wireless encryption enabled as the Time Capsule.
