Time capsule..new to Mac Need help!!!

I reacently bought a 1T TC. I need to make space in my HD of my Macbook. I connected the TC and has done the backup. My question is, If I erase movies, pictures from my HD on the computer will I be able to get those items back again on my laptop when I want to see them?
Also, can the TC be used as an external drive without being used with time machine? ie: drag my movies, pictures, music to the TC as if it where a pendrive, for example? It seems much more easier for me when I plug a pendrive drag what I want there, eject the pendrive and ewhen I want a file a just plug it in again...

Hi,
After your files are backed up using Time Machine, you can delete them from your computer's disk and recover them using Time Machine. However, an Important consideration is that eventually your Time Capsule will fill up and Time Machine will delete your oldest backups to make room for new backups. Since backups are incremental (only new or changed files are saved during subsequent backups), your older files will eventually be deleted from Time Machine. Once they are deleted from your TC, you won't be able to retrieve them. If they have also been deleted from your computer's disk they are gone forever. It is also possible for your Time Capsule disk to crash or the Time Machine files to become corrupted.
You might consider getting another external drive at some point and use it to archive important files. The files on the "archive" disk should never be deleted. Also, the disk in your computer will eventually crash and having important files available (between Time Machine and your archive disks) will make it possible to recover your files. Of course your house could burn down, be hit by tornado, etc.
You can use your TC disk to save files just like any other disk. According to Apple's Time Capsule web page ( http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nplm=MB 276LL/A );
"Time Capsule also works great as a wireless hard drive whether you have a Mac or PC. It sets up in a snap, giving you a networked hard drive you can use for storing and sharing any kinds of files."

  • Hey new to Macs need help getting one(s) running again...

    Hey all,
So I acquired some old Macs from a local schools surplus sale. I have managed to get one operational (a G3 tower) but am now trying to get a MacBook running and have had a few issues. I have gotten it to the flashing folder screen but have been unable to get it to boot from the HDD. The HDD drive works I have installed OSX 10.3 on the drive via firewire but it seems that the Mac wont recognize that the drive is there. When I get into the Startup Manager screen nothing shows up except the mouse (which I can move around). The MacBook is an a1181 with 1GB of Ram installed. Being new to Macs I have no clue on how to continue. I know Macs do not have a BIOS but is there something similar that can be accessed? What about Firmware updating? I would prefer not to have to take it (and others) to the local Apple store. Any and all help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have the same MacBook (a1181) and had the same problem. My solution was to simply re-install snow leopard. Just buy a snow leopard CD from the apple store. Don't buy a mountian lion CD because it is not compatible with your MacBook. One you have the SL CD, insert it into the optical drive (CD drive) and boot the computer. When you hear the chime, press and hold down "C" on the keyboard and it should boot. If this fails, reboot and brews and hold option/alt when you hearths chime, then select the CD as it appears. Then simply install snow leopard, and enjoy your Mac! Hope this helps, and I will be happy to help with any problems or questions :)

  • New to MAC  NEED HELP

Hey guys, thanks for reading....I woke up this morning and my itunes library was gone. Also, I know in a windows os, when you have anything stored on a seperate drive, a media player only plays those tracks. My itunes wants to copy everything to the os hard drive and there isn't enough room to do so? Can I configure itunes to just play the library and not try to copy everything to the OS hard drive? Also, how do I uninstall applications to clear up space? Any help will be greatly appreciated, again, I am totally new to mac OS.... Running OS X Tiger 10.4

Hi Solomon, and a warm welcome to the forums!
In iTunes>Preferences>Advanced tab you can set the iTunes folder location to an external or other location.
Also, how do I uninstall applications to clear up space?
Applications really won't clear up enough space, DVDs & Movies & such are the big users... my Applications & Utilities folders, (400+ APP & Utils), takes up lees than 4 DVDs.
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?

  • New to mac need help on cleaning mac system

Hello guys i am new to the mac i got it yesterday and i am so use to a pc...so i have some questions
i want to know how i can clean my mac? (the system not the outside)
how to clean out the internet history etc.( i know on my pc i had these one click apps. that i just open and it would clean my computer out such as the internet history, Cookies etc. and it would clean up left over files that are left from software that i have uninstall is there a software like that for the mac?
oh this is the new macBook pro the 09 and its the 13inc. 4gb
    Thanks

    Hello Candy:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
A Mac running OS X needs no "cleaning." For example, OS X "defrags" files of less than 20 MB on the fly. Routine cache cleaning, etc, is done in the background as long as your computer is either on or sleeping. Let your Macbook Pro sleep so that the background tasks will run once you wake it up.
_DO NOT_ trash system files or indiscriminately clear cache files (that will make the Mac run slower).
At the risk of being pedantic, do not worry about maintenance tasks for a Mac running OS X.

  • New to Mac - Need help - Want to share Printer and Internet with PC

Looking for help in setting up to share my Windows Compaq PC printer and files and internet with my MAC Mini. They sit right next to each other, my PC does not have wireless ability. What equipment and what steps do I need to take to make this happen? I am looking for the cheapest way possible.
    Thanks

To share the internet you are going to need the means the connect both the Mac and PC to your internet connection. A router would be the simplest - connect your broadband modem to the router and the computers to the router. Routers are quite inexpensive these days and it is also needed to share a printer with both computers.
This leads us to the printer. Before you think about sharing the printer with the Mac you'll first need to determine the printer has drivers for OS X. If not, there's no easy way to seamlessly print from the Mac to your printer. Note I say seamless. Since all Mac applications can print a PDF file you can print the PDF, transfer the file to your PC, and then print the PDF in Windows.

  • I am trying to back up on my new time capsule with my mac book pro.  It's been 25 hours and only done 5.8gb of 129gb. any advice.  Thanks

I am trying to back up on my new time capsule with my mac book pro.  It's been 25 hours and only done 5.8gb of 129gb. any advice.  Thanks

You can backup 2 computers as long as the TC has enough space.
Your access might be restricted if you set it up with users.. you must log in with the correct user to get access to the files.
Otherwise you should be able to see both sparsebundles just with finder.

Hi trying to set up new Time Capsule, it says I need a newer version of Airport Utility, how do I get this?

You need to be running at least the Lion (10.7.5) operating system or higher on your Mac, or using an iPhone or iPad with AirPort Utility installed on the device to set up the Time Capsule.
Check the System Requirements for the Time Capsule to confirm.
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3 or higher

  • I have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule. Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh? Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?

    Hi,
I  have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule.
    a) Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh?
    b) Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?
    Thanks,
    Paul

You may not need to buy a new Time Capsule.
You can connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, and use it in addition to the TC's internal HD.  You may need a powered USB hub as well.
Exactly what is on your TC?  If it's only Time Machine backups, you may not need to do anything -- Time Machine will delete the oldest backup(s) automatically when it needs room for new ones.  But if you have more than about 250 GB on your internal HD, that 500 GB may not be large enough to keep backups long enough.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, besides your backups, you could back up to the external HD and use the internal for the other data, or vice-versa.  But TM backups cannot "span" two drives, and you shouldn't mix backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.

  • New iPad 3 will not charge from a mac. need help on that

my new ipad 3 will not charge from a mac. need help why if any one knows? thk

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • I can access my time capsule from my mac mini at work but my macbook can only access it from my home network. how do i fix this?

I have a Mac Mini and a MacBook, both were configured at home to access the time capsule. I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home. The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow. Accessing the same files from an older HP laptop is as fast as accessing its own hard drive. How can I speed up the accessing of these files from my apple products. One would think they would work fast and the 'windows' computers would take minutes to map the drive each time...
    Thanks for any help.

I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home.
This cannot happen by magic though.. you must have configured the mini to access the TC remotely.. which method are you using, BTMM and iCloud??
The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
How is the Macbook configured to access the TC remotely?? If you are trying to use BTMM and iCloud, then it might be a case that with the mini running the connection cannot be done by more than one computer at a time.. this is generally the case although I do not know if that is specifically true of BTMM method. Try turning off the mini and leave it off.. (off not standby)... then reboot the TC when you are at home.. and then try and connect the laptop to the TC the next morning from work. See if it is then able to capture the connection.. if so start up the mini and I suspect it now will not be able to connect.. that will prove that the TC cannot cope with two remote connections.
There also could be another factor in here. If you are accessing the laptop via the same router as the mini is on.. then actually you cannot have two users mount the same files on a TC.. from the same IP address.. as far as the TC is concerned both devices have identical IP, that is the public IP of the work location router.
If you happen to not be using BTMM then the situation is even easier.. you cannot make two different devices connect to the same network resource using the same port. That is the failing of the NAT system.. one device uses the port then it cannot be used by a second device. You will need to do some fancy footwork and use a different port.
Anyhow tell us exactly how you are doing remote access.. otherwise I am just guessing.
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow.
Are you talking about files you are hosting on the TC?? Not Time Machine backups??
Can you tell me exactly how you are accessing the TC.. please do a test..
Copy a file to the TC and from the TC using the Laptop.. Use a single very large file, eg 1GB movie file.
Give me a read and write speed.. you can use activity monitor to give me an aprox average speed as well as peak.
Do the same test from the same computer with wireless turned off running ethernet.
Then do the tests from the mini.. same ones.. copy large file to and from the TC by ethernet and by wireless.. when using ethernet make sure wireless is off.
I strongly recommend you set IPv6 to link local only for your wireless and ethernet setup in the Mac.
    eg
Now do the test from the HP laptop and give me the results from that.
Is the issue wireless only.. ??
Then you might need to spend a bit of time fixing the wireless in the Macs.. you can run wireless diagnostics in Mavericks.

  • Time Capsule With Windows 7 Please Help Going Round in Circles!

    Hi
have just got a 1Tb time capsule for Xmas. I have a 13" Macbook unibody and have installed the time machine and airport utility through this, thinking apple computer + apple time capsule will be easier. All went well and the Macbook sees the Drive and has backed itself up nicely. So very pleased.
Then the problem i have a windows 7 machine and went off and installed the airport utility on the machine. All went fine, but i cant see the HDD, i can see it in network places but all i can do is read it, i can't write to it from my windows machine. Have looked at loads of posts about mapping drives making sure latest firmware (7.5) etc but am totally lost as i read so many different things that i just ended up going round in circles!
What i wanted to do was put all my media, documents and pics on the TC and allow both machines to share from it and use it. But no matter what i try it seems i can only write to it from the mac. I have seen in the airport utility on the windows machine under disks (after selecting manual setup)> file sharing that the secure shared disks is set to "with device password", now i have the passwords, i just cant seem to see where i can see that drive in windows and where to enter the password!!! Should that be set to something else? File sharing is enabled.I assumed once i had installed the airport utility on the windows machine the HDD would just pop up in my computer or something like it popped up easily on the mac! Or am i being stupid and it doesnt work like that?
The windows machine is connected via ethernet and the mac is wireless.
Please can someone help as its driving me mad and i just cant seem to figure it out. Am not that computer savvy when it comes to things like this and am probably missing something really stupid but you know what its like when you have stared at something for hours. Any help would be most appreciated or SIMPLE guide or something
Many thanks in advance and happy Xmas to you all

Just an update to the above i can now no longer see the time capsule in network places!! All i have done is retstarted!!! I can still see the time capsule from my mac and access it!!!

That means the computer cannot find the operating system. Either the hard drive has a physical problem or is corrupted. Do you have the computer's original system CDs or DVDs? You may need them to get through this.
Notebook computer drives are not as robust as the larger drives used in desktop computers. If your G4 can run OS9, it's pretty old, and the drive may have simply worn out.
