Time Capsule newbie to Mac Networking.

First newbie to Mac Networking. At home Apple products include 1-iMac, 2-MacBook Pro, 1 Macbook Air, 4-iPhones and HP printer all wireless networked with Verizon Fios Router. Having lag issues with internet and printer connectivity. House is three levels, whereas need connectivity at any given time.
Question: Am looking to purchase Time Capsule (3 TB) in hopes that this will extend the range and help with the connectivity issues plus a wireless backup for me. Have a external 3 TB connected to the iMac for backup with TimeMachine. None of the MacBooks have backup capabilities. Will this help with backing up just the MacBooks? Is this all I need?
Question: Would I need a Airport Express station on third and basement levels to help with the network connectivity, if the Time Capsule is located on the second level of the house?
Need a best setup before I go out and spend monies on product(s) that I would need or not need. Appreciate any help! Thanks for the time.

Welcome to the community support area for the Time Capsule!
Let's start with one question first and get that clarified, since this will determine the answers to your other questions.
When you say that you want the Time Capsule to extend the range of the wireless network, this implies that the Time Capsule will be located on another floor or some distance away from the Fios router.
In this case, the Time Capsule must connect to the Fios router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. It cannot connect to the FIos router using only a wireless connection.
Specifially, connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the Fios router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule and configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network that uses the same wireless network name and same password as the Fios wireless network. Then, you will have one "big" wireless network.
So, the first question here would be whether or not you are able to consider this type of installation.

  • I can access my time capsule from my mac mini at work but my macbook can only access it from my home network. how do i fix this?

I have a Mac Mini and a MacBook, both were configured at home to access the time capsule. I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home. The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow. Accessing the same files from an older HP laptop is as fast as accessing its own hard drive. How can I speed up the accessing of these files from my apple products. One would think they would work fast and the 'windows' computers would take minutes to map the drive each time...
    Thanks for any help.

I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home.
This cannot happen by magic though.. you must have configured the mini to access the TC remotely.. which method are you using, BTMM and iCloud??

How is the Macbook configured to access the TC remotely?? If you are trying to use BTMM and iCloud, then it might be a case that with the mini running the connection cannot be done by more than one computer at a time.. this is generally the case although I do not know if that is specifically true of BTMM method. Try turning off the mini and leave it off.. (off not standby)... then reboot the TC when you are at home.. and then try and connect the laptop to the TC the next morning from work. See if it is then able to capture the connection.. if so start up the mini and I suspect it now will not be able to connect.. that will prove that the TC cannot cope with two remote connections.
There also could be another factor in here. If you are accessing the laptop via the same router as the mini is on.. then actually you cannot have two users mount the same files on a TC.. from the same IP address.. as far as the TC is concerned both devices have identical IP, that is the public IP of the work location router.
If you happen to not be using BTMM then the situation is even easier.. you cannot make two different devices connect to the same network resource using the same port. That is the failing of the NAT system.. one device uses the port then it cannot be used by a second device. You will need to do some fancy footwork and use a different port.
Anyhow tell us exactly how you are doing remote access.. otherwise I am just guessing.

Are you talking about files you are hosting on the TC?? Not Time Machine backups??
Can you tell me exactly how you are accessing the TC.. please do a test..
Copy a file to the TC and from the TC using the Laptop.. Use a single very large file, eg 1GB movie file.
Give me a read and write speed.. you can use activity monitor to give me an aprox average speed as well as peak.
Do the same test from the same computer with wireless turned off running ethernet.
Then do the tests from the mini.. same ones.. copy large file to and from the TC by ethernet and by wireless.. when using ethernet make sure wireless is off.
I strongly recommend you set IPv6 to link local only for your wireless and ethernet setup in the Mac.
    eg
Now do the test from the HP laptop and give me the results from that.
Is the issue wireless only.. ??
Then you might need to spend a bit of time fixing the wireless in the Macs.. you can run wireless diagnostics in Mavericks.

Can you use time capsule for your mac and use readynas to back up your pc's on the same network

Sure, that is trivial setup.. they both have different names and IP addresses.
You should be able to use ReadyNas for TM backup but you should check the latest state of play for that.

  • Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network

    Hi,
Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network.
Five minutes before upgrading it however performed successfully a last backup.
I found several posts on this forum and proposed solutions:
    - restarted both the mac and capsule
    - deleted the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (twice rebooting in between)
    Still have the issue.

i was using time capsule to extend a network.  now i want it to be the primary base station.  how do i convert this?

Thanks for the info. Since this is a cable modem, you will need to fully reset it so that it will associate correctly with the Time Capsule when it is reconnected.
I don't have the manual for your Ubee model handy, but most modems will reset if you power them down completely. That means pulling the power cord from the back of the device or unplugging from the wall. Leave the modem powered off at least 30 minutes...longer will not hurt a bit.
Next, perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule per this document:
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
After the modem has been powered down and Time Capsule has been reset, connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port (circle icon) on the Time Capsule.
Power up the modem and let it run for 2-3 minutes by itself
Then power up the Time Capsule and let it run a minute or two
Next, open AirPort Utility and configure the Time Capsule to "Create a wireless network". Let us know what operating system you are using on your Mac or PC if you have additional questions or need more details on this.

  • Why does Time Capsule hate older Macs running Tiger??

Time Capsule has ruined my network and my bloody Saturday!
I have never had this much trouble with an Apple product (at least since OS 8)...and I just waited on hold for over 64 minutes and then got disconnected. Sorry if this is jumbled, but it's been one lousy day!!
I got my Time Capsule, and I was looking forward to setting it up for backup once I got past the "easy" part of the router setup...uh huh...easy...for my new iMac (running 10.5.2) , no prob. For my 2002 Power Mac running 10.4.11 and an original AirPort card, another story. Just as well that my old PowerBook G4 is still at work.
After some struggles, I gave up setting up the more secure WPA password for the G4 and reverted to a far less secure WEP password. At least that way I could get the G4 connected wirelessly.
If I want to access drives connected to my G4 from the iMac, no problems; I can also see the Time Capsule drive from the G4; however I cannot for the life of me get the G4 to successfully mount the iMac (which was no problem before I switched routers).
I was using a dLink router (which I gave away because I thought I wouldn't need it anymore), and getting online wirelessly while connecting my iMac to the old Power Mac G4 via Gigabit Ethernet for file sharing on occasion. When I first set up the Time Capsule, I tried to keep the ethernet cable connected directly between the two machines (as I had successfully with the dlink). While the iMac could mount the G4 readily, the G4, despite seeing the iMac, couldn't. Even in iChat using Bonjour, the G4 could receive messages and send messages back to the iMac (in an established chatroom), but it would always fail if I tried to send a "private" message...
sigh I just tried again...I always just had 169.1.1.2 and 169.1.1.3 as manual IP's for my ethernet connection, while mainintaining wireless connections to router (and internet); never a problem...now, even with that &*?&! time Capsule completely out of the loop, the G4 refuses to connect to the iMac...simply won't do it (even when it sees it!)...now because of the snowstorm in Canada, can't even reach Apple...nice real nice...wish I never heard of Time Capsule...
Does anybody have any way to work around this crap??? This is ridiculous!

Well I hade so much trouble to change my AP Express and when it arrives, my TC... to put my macs in a subnet. And that's true, I had to create a new network profile. It seems there was a problem with the normal one, but I can't say from where.
The problem I still have is that it cannot memorize one time for all the device order. It's always changing and gives me troubles.

  • Can i access my data on time capsule from some other network

can i access my data on time capsule from some other network that is my data at home from office over internet

There is plenty of info out there if you google..
Here is a summary I just put into another thread.
Remote access has been added back into iCloud that was in MobileMe..
Read the info on setting it up from cloud service.. BTMM.
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/back-to-my-mac/
If you want to do it without the cloud service, you have one major issue.. the public IP for WAN..
The internal IP of the TC.. which will default to 10.0.1.1 btw.. is irrelevant. It is the IP of the WAN which you use to access the TC over the internet. And here you have a problem.. the TC does not include dyndns service. So unless you have a static IP address from your ISP, this will cause you grief.
(If it is offered by your ISP.. get a static IP.. that eliminates all the issues.. and is far superior. Even dyndns service has issues if your public IP rotates too often. It is generally an extra cost item and requires a business account but some ISP offer it cheap or even free.. I joined an ISP that offered static ip for free because it gives me the ability to remote access my network without all the hassles you will see below.)
There are ways around it.. setting up your own domain for instance.
    http://dyn.com/support/airport-time-capsule-with-dynamic-dns/
But it is easier to simply use a different router.. almost all of them have dyndns service available.. place the TC behind the router in bridge and forward port 548 TCP to it.
This is a bit old but still relevant.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
Note .. there is no ftp, http, ssh (there is actually but it isn't accessible), or any other service to allow connection other than AFP.. so you must use a Mac in remote location to access the TC.
The setup for the two methods is slightly different in the TC.. in the first instance, you need to turn on WAN access via disk sharing page in the manual setup.
In the second case you do not need this.
Remember security and put strong passwords on the disk. There are still security questions about this.
If security is important.. there is a third and better (IMO) method and that is vpn.. you will need to buy a vpn router as TC also missed out on that.. establish a vpn with the main router and that will allow you access to your network.. you will also then be able to use SMB remotely not just AFP.
Also if this office is a large company they should be running a firewall, which would block your access to home. You should check your IT admin people for what is allowed.. generally the only acceptable method is vpn otherwise you can drag viruses and trojans right into the network without the firewall catching them.

  • Configure Time Capsule as a wired network drive for Time Machine Backups

I have a 4th generation Time Capsule, a MBPr on OS X Mountain Lion.
Time Capsule/Time Machine work fine in wireless mode.  But, that's not what I prefer!
Rather, I want to connect Time Capsule by ethernet cable to my cable modem (VZ FiOS), and turn off the Time Capsule's wireless, and access the Time Capsule as another newtork hard drive and let Time Machine perform backups with my Asus RT-N66U router.
I have got the Time Capsule set up, but can't get Time Machne set up to perform backups with it.   Here are the steps I've taken:
    Open Time Machine
    Turn Time Machine On
    Pop-up shpws Other Time Capsule
Highlight Other Time Capsule and click SetUp
AirPort Utility pops up and can't find the Time Machine, of course, since its wireless is turned off.
On the menu, File-->Enter Address and Password for the Time Capsule
The Time Capsule screen comes up under Base Station.  No need to change the name or password.
Back To My Mac is set up with my Apple account
Internet shows 192.168.1.101 as the Time Capsule's address
    Wireless: Network Mode is off
Network: Router Mode set to Off-Bridge Mode
Disks shows one Time Capsule partition.  File Sharing is enabled, and Secure Shared Disks is set to With Device Password.
I have to change something...then change it back...to get AirPort Utility to try to update settings on the Time Capsule.  That's where things fall apart.  AirPort Utility just spins away.  It never finishes.  I end up using Force Kill to close AirPort Utility.
Any suggestions?  Is there a way to configure Time Machine without AirPort Utility?

Let me just be clear on the setup..
I want to connect Time Capsule by ethernet cable to my cable modem (VZ FiOS), and turn off the Time Capsule's wireless, and access the Time Capsule as another newtork hard drive and let Time Machine perform backups with my Asus RT-N66U router.
This is the sentence I am having issues with.
There should be one router.. The Asus..
The TC should be plugged into that, not the cable modem. Only the Asus should have a connection to the cable modem. The TC should be in bridge.. which from your other listing it is.
I think this is the actual setup you have..
You should be able in finder to make the TC disk available (alhough I don't use ML yet).. using to server.
And type in AFP://TCIPaddress or AFP://TCName obviously replacing the generic with the actual name.
    Does that work?

  • Time Capsule on Existing Wireless Network

My niece will be going to college this fall, and her dad bought her a Time Capsule.  Her dorm will already have a wireless network. How can she use the Time Capsule on an existing network and still have some security?

Using an Ethernet cable, she should connect the Time Capsule directly to the Mac's Ethernet port and backup files that way. The Mac will not be able to connect to the Internet when the Ethernet cable is connected and backups are running.
If the Time Capsule is configured to "join" the campus wireless network using wireless only.....which is not supported by Apple..... then backups must occur very slowly over that "public" network. Definitely not recommended.
If is not too late to return the Time Capsule....there are better, and less expensive options here.

  • Time Capsule 1GB with 2 networks one of which WEP

I understand the Time Capsule supports two wifi networks. So I would like to replace my current Linksys router which I have set up with a G network secured by WEP and an N network secured by WPA.
However I cannot see how to configure the "second" network in Time Capsule - it only shows me the options for configuring one network. Also it shows no WEP option.
Can anyone tell me how to configure two Time Capsule wifi networks separately, one of them with WEP ?
    Thanks!

I'm almost new to mac but i have had a lot of help in this forum to improve my knowledge so i would try to help you in this matter as a return.
But if somebody with more knowledge would help you follow his advice because as stated i'm also learning.
I have had the same impression like you about only one net available when installing my wireless net from a Time Capsule dual band new device i bought last month.
I solved it in the Time Capsuel device as follows; i acces the "manual configuration", then in the "Wireless" go to the "button" with name "advanced" in the bottom, when i push it, it open a new window with the second wireless net specifications (same name the the actual 2,4 GHZ net but with added "(5 GHZ)" and using this frecuency by default). You can try to configure it there.
I used Istumbler free program to control the range and power of each net with my portable ( quite good and free of charge).
I relize that 2,4 GHZ is less quick but arrived further so it have more range than the 5 GHZ quicker net. Now i'm able to connect to both depending of what i need each time ( more range or more speed).
I hope that this information would help you.
Best regards from Barcelona, Pascual M

  • Airport time capsule with a mac mini

so can i use airport time capsule with a mac mini

What do you want to do with it??
The TC is designed as a network target for TM on any Mac computer.. so of course it will work with a mini.
It is also a standard wireless router for a network.. that will work on any network client device..
It is NOT designed as a NAS.. ie network storage.. I recommend people not use it for that purpose. But people can do stuff that I don't recommend.
Good luck when the TC dies and their files are all lost.
Did you want to do something different to the norm??

  • TS4611 Guys if you have these build: 12E3200 and your wifi is dropping, is not the your mid 2013 macbook air, is your router, I solve it by setting up my time capsule as a new network problem solved

Here is what I have been doing:
I got my new macbook air 11" two weeks ago, and have been haven problems with wifi connection dropping, I'm using verizon fioz at home, and their router
I also have a time capsule not set up as a network just join it to my current one.
After looking online all these days, I though, maybe is the verizon device that is updated..
I then reset the time capsule, created a new network
connected my system to the time capsule network, and there it is
    DONE, everything works now.
So if you are haven the same problem,, that is the fix
    hope that helps.
Oh  before I did these I try everything, the wifi update from apple don't work it keeps dropping it
I try everything, so don't and delete the system as some people have done, I read somewhere.
try my fix hopes that works.

I have seen lots of issues on Yosemite with Wifi (and have been having issues myself), but yours seem different. It is a pretty new computer, have you tried taking it in under Applecare (if you live somewhere this is convenient)? Maybe you just got a defective wifi card.  I won't defend Apple over this wifi mess, because it really is terrible, but your issue seems not the same as the ones I've read about while researching how to fix mine (unsucessfully....).

  • Time Capsule - Can't change network password after 10.6.3 update

Has anyone else experience an issue changing the Time Capsule network password after updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.3? If so did you find a work around? After the update I'm no longer able to change the Time Capsule network password when accessing it from Airport Utility. The utility will say that Time Capsule has updated the network password to the new one but when I check keychain it shows the old password. I tried resolving this by deleting the original keychain then changing it again in Airport Utility but it still shows the old password in the keychain and Airport Utility when I reopen the app.

    HI,
Checkthe vendor site for Snow Leopard compatibility. The developer may need to update their software.

They said I need to change my settings to NAT settings. I haven't been able to figure out or find anything. I have also spoken to Apple Support on the phone for hours without being able to figure out how to do this ( i don't think he knew much either lol.) Please help me because I've got about 15-20 devices in my house that require to be connected to the internet and this is just making things ridiculously slow and painful for me.
    Thanks!

It is on DHCP & NAT under router mode yet my isp is still the one issuing ip addresses to my devices instead of the router issuing them

Can I use 2 Time Capsules on the same network

Here is what I want to do. I currently have a time capsule used for one end of the house. Currently my 2 kids rooms are in an addition that I have run a cable from the time capsule to each of their rooms. If I want to give them wireless for that part of the house could I add another TC, for wireless and they can both backup their macbooks to that time capsule.
So Can I add a 2nd time capsule to extend by "N" network, or should I just go with an AP express or extreme and let them each have their own HD backup for each macbook?

Have bought many reconditioned (Refurb) product from Apple site and have always been happy with them. To date none have failed me and we have been Apple customers since 2006. With that said when you buy Refurbs make sure you know what model you are getting. The current TCs on the Apple site are last generation. The way to tell is to check the model number against the current one. Easy way to do this is to put both in the shopping cart and compare the model numbers. The Refurb model number is FB277LL/A and the new TC model is MB765LL/A. The first digits identify whether a Refurb or new, the rest should be the same if they are the same model number.
Before you buy, now which model number you want and then check other sites to compare prices. I recently purchased a new TC on Amazon for a better price then the Apple Store Site. For larger Refurb purchases like MBPs, we choose to buy directly from Apple; but for peripherals we often buy from OWC, Amazon, and other sites. Hope this helps.
