Time Capsule not producing wireless signal

We have a time capsule serving as our main wireless for the house and it recently stopped producing a wireless signal and has a solid amber light. I've tried leaving it unplugged and I've tried resetting the device. Neither of those plans had any effect at all. How can I fix this?
I believe my wife bought this in 09 and its got a 2 TB hard drive. Not sure which version that makes this.

Unfortunately, a solid amber is light is not a good sign.
Try a complete Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule using the steps below. This procedure will not affect any of the data that you have stored on the internal hard drive.
Power off the Time Capsule for 15-20 minutes or longer
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule first, and keep holding for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button after the 9-10 hold period and allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart
The Time Capsule light should normally stay solid amber for about 30 seconds and then change to a slow, blinking amber light, indicating that the Time Capsule has been reset and it can now be reconfigured.
If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times and the light stays solid amber, unfortunately the hard drive has failed, or there is an internal power supply issue with the Time Capsule.
You should take the Time Capsule to an Apple Store.....if you have one in your area.....or contact Apple Support directly to discuss your options.

  • Time Capsule stops transmitting wireless signal-power cycle required to fix

My 1 TB Time Capsule will work as a wireless access point for hours.. like 7 or 8 hours and then just
stop transmitting. It just doesn't show up as an available access point. If I power cycle (unplug/plug) it, then it starts working again. This seems to happen whether time machine is enabled or not.
Anyone else seeing this type of behavior?

My 500GB Time Capsule showed up on Friday of last week to replace a Linksys WRT54G router. I've been using the same MacBook since May of 2006 and the last several months, I've been having frequent connection issues running 10.4.11. I could only connect in the same room as the router. If I went on the other side of my small house, I'd lose the signal. Also on the old network was a Dell 300m, circa 2003 that runs 802.11B, a Nintendo Wii, and two Nintendo DS handhelds.
I configured the new Time Capsule as a closed network with WPA/WPA 2 encryption and interference robustness . So far I've only setup my MacBook, the wife's Dell, and the Wii. It was working great for the first few days. Tonight, my wife was using her Dell on the couch and I was working on the Mac in the dining room a few feet away. It seems that mixed mode traffic destroys the signal/noise ratio. We were both having issues with dropped connections. I rebooted the router from Air Port utility and it never came back. I checked it in my office and the light was solid green. So I unplugged it for a few seconds to cycle the power and the signal came back, but by this time my wife shut her computer down. At the time of peak interference which degraded the signal, the logs showed the Wii had the strongest signal and both laptops had next to none.
I should also note that the last couple of weeks have been really bad with just my MacBook running 10.4.11 on the network. I decided to do a fresh install of 10.5.4 after I setup the Time Capsule on Friday and my problems seemed to vanish. But it appears there are some major interference issues with my wife's Dell with Centrino and the MacBook.
But to more clearly answer your question, yes, my Time Capsule behaved exactly as you've described this evening.

  • TIME CAPSULE NOT SENDING A WIRELESS SIGNAL

I am setting up a new time capsule machine 500m, and i have the green light on. have existing buffalo router connected to a dsl modem. the buffalo hands out via an ethernet connection to the wan port of the TC. i have an ethernet cable plugged into the TC and i get internet signal via hardwaire, but i can't see the TC wirelessly. when i open the airport it is not in the list of available wireless networks. i have tried resetting the TC, but no luck,,,, can anyone help shake this down?

I need a little more info to help troubleshoot this one....
Does the Buffalo router send out a wireless signal too? Is it in default configuration and can the computer connect to the internet through the router by simply plugging in a cable or choosing the wireless network?
You'll have to connect wired to the TC for the next questions. In Airport Utility>Time Capsule manual setup>wireless tab, what is the setting for wireless mode & radio mode? And then under wireless options, is the box checked for create closed network?
Now go to the Internet tab and what is the setting for connection sharing?

Since I've upgraded to Maverick on my Macbook Pro the airpot utility does not recognise that there is a time capsule on the wireless network. I can see the TC using the air port utility on my iPhone5 and on my iPad. What am I doing wrong on my macbook?

I have over 250G backed up and I really don't want to reset everything and start again.
Not sure what you mean here.
A reset will not affect any of the data on the Time Capsule hard drive.  You would have to perform a completely separate and very deliberate Erase Disk operation for that to occur.
I'm not recommending that you perform a default reset, but it is an option if there is really nothing else to try.
I don't know if what you are seeing is a Mavericks issue or not, since I refuse to use any new software until at least the first major update with fixes comes along.
Another user may be able to offer more input on Mavericks.

We use a 2TB Time Capsule as our wireless airport for the whole house but we can't get the signal to all rooms.  Is there anyway to boost the signal?

You to purchase an extreme or express and use it as wrieless extender.. that is the only way Apple provided for boosting the signal.

  • Airport (TIme Capsule) not connecting to iMAC running windows XP

I have an iMAC that runs both OS X and Windows. My router is an airport (Time Capsule)
I can wirelessly access the router when running OS X, but when I run Windows XP I can not. If I plug the cable from the cable modem directly into the iMAC when running XP, it works fine.
The airport (Time Capsule) shows up in the wireless setting with a strong signal, but when I try to connect to it; I get "Wireless router is out of range". The airport sits next to the computer.
    Any suggestions.

  • Two family home sharing one Verizon Fios network. I want to use my time capsule to boost the signal in my basement apartment while still using the Fios network for the apartment upstairs. Is this possible?

    Hi there,
I just moved into a basement apartment in a two family home. We share internet and cable. The signal in my apartment is mediocre at best and I wanted to use my time capsule to boost the signal in my apartment while keeping their Fios network intact upstairs. Is there any way to do this without having to turn off the wifi in the Verizon actiontec router? Any help or tips would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance.

The only way to boost signal with apple products is to another apple product.
Or run ethernet or some other replacement for wireless. eg EOP (homeplug) adapters. These are not foolproof though.. they depend on circuits being wired via simple fuses and can at times not work.
Your other choice is to get an Airport Express.. plug it into the FIOS router and use that to establish a network.. it can also be used as a wireless bridge in the downstairs area but you can pick whichever works the best. If your wireless is reasonable at least in one location downstairs any wireless bridge could do the same thing.. and plug into the TC for your downstairs wireless.

  • About connecting my time capsule to a wireless network

I have bought a time capsule but as my place isn't ethernet-able, how can I use the time capsule as a "wifi acceptor" to connect with my wireless network, and then boardcasting wifi signal to my devices? I have tried the extending a network option, after it restarted and I can't even search any base stations. Can anyone suggest me a solution to that? I really need to do so although I know that this isn't a purpose of using the timecapsule. In other words I'm trying to make the time capsule as a wireless modem to connect to another wireless network, in the mean time boardcasting wifi signal to my devices.
    Thanks guys.

how can I use the time capsule as a "wifi acceptor" to connect with my wireless network, and then boardcasting wifi signal to my devices?
    Unfortunately, this is not possible.
In order to broadcast a wireless network with Internet access, the Time Capsule must be provided with a wired Ethernet connection at its WAN "O" port.
Check wtih your Internet Service Provider to see if they have an adapter or other device that will provide a wired Ethernet connection to the Time Capsule.

  • Problems using time capsule to extend wireless network

    Hi all,
For some months I had to move to Germany for work (I'm from Italy, sorry for my English).
I am sharing internet with some other people, the wi-fi router is in their apartment, so basically I don't have access.
As the signal is strong enough only in one room I would like to use my time capsule to extend it also in the other rooms.
But when I try to extend it, my macbook pro connects to the network I would like to extend and the time capsule is not seen anymore.
To see the time capsule again in the airport utility i have to reset it to factory default.
    Do you have any idea?
The wireless network is WPA2 protected, the provider is the German "Unity Media".

As the signal is strong enough only in one room I would like to use my time capsule to extend it also in the other rooms.
Apple's "extend" feature will only work if the Time Capsule is "extending" the wireless signal from another Apple wireless router. In other words, the "extend" feature is not compatible with wireless routers from other manufacturers.
You will need to connect the Time Capsule to the wireless router using a wired Ethernet connection.  Connect from one of the LAN <-> ports on the wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.  Then, you can configure the Time Capsule to provide a separate wireless network for your use.

  • Can Time Capsule be a wireless client?

Can Time Capsule be a wireless client?

It can, but this is not officially supported by Apple.  Most users should avoid this type of configuration.....even if they can figure out how to do it.
Backups will take twice as long because the signal must "hop" from your computer to the main router and then "hop" again to the Time Capsule. In addition to taking more time, this doubles the chances of an error occurring.
The Ethernet ports are not enabled on the Time Capsule in this type of configuration, so it is not possible to backup using Ethernet at all.

  • Time Capsule Installation Producing Different Errors

I just bought a 1TB Time Capsule to go along with my 24" iMac.
I already have a home network where my Desktop Mac, Desktop PC and Laptop all connect through the net and to each other through a D-Link Wireless Router.
On the Time Capsule papers, it is recommended to connect the Time Capsule with the router.
    1) Can someone explain why this should be done?
I can understand the benefit of a possibly stronger signal but is there another reason to connect the Time Capsule to the Wireless Router (via Ethernet Cable)?
Anyway, I have connected the two together and then I turned on the Time capsule for the first time.
Let's forget about Time Machine (Backup) for now.
First thing it did was ask me to do a firmware update which I did.
Then it asked me to choose one of three choices (through Airport Utility):
    1) I have a wireless network and want to add Time Capsule or replace an existing device on my network.
    2) I don't have a wireless network and I want to create one
    3) I want to connect Time Capsule to my computer or network using Ethernet.
I chose option 1 as I figured that I'm ADDING something to my network or that I may be replacing my router in some alternate sense.
The next screen asked me 3 more questions...
    1) I want to replace an existing base station or wireless router with Time Capsule.
    2) I want Time Capsule to wirelessly join my current network
    3) I want to connect Time Capsule to my network using Ethernet to extend my current network or create a second network.
This is a harder set of questions as in one way or another, all 3 seem to fit my setup.
I wish to connect to the Time Capsule and then the Wireless Router through all my computers. The Wirelss Router is connected to the Time Capsule through Ethernet so option 3 may seem valid.
Option 1 is valid if it is deemed that I am actually replacing my wireless router now with the Time Capsule.
I chose option 2 as that was the most simplest option.
I don't know if this is correct but this is my understanding that I'm just JOINING the Time Capsule to my current setup.
Then it asked me to select the Network Name. So I selected the Wireless Router name from the Drop Down Box. I hope this was the right thing to do.
Once I chose the wireless router, it asked me to select the WEP key but it gave me several choices:
    WEP 40 bit
    WEP 128 bit
    WEP (Transitional Security Network)
Which one do I choose for a standard 10 digit hex key?
I chose 40 bit first time around and I chose the Transitional Security Network 2nd time around.
I entered my WEP key and then continued to update the settings.
It did it's thing and then it restarted the Time Capsule but when it came back on, it said that there was an error setting up the Time Capsule.
I have checked the cables and made sure everything is connected properly.
Can someone please help me understand the logic behind all of the choices above and also why I am unable to set it up? How can I get passed this error?
I have reset the Time Capsule several times now by pressing the reset button for 5 seconds.
    Appreciate the help,
    JH

Any help on this at all?
    Im desparate

  • Can I regard a time capsule as a wireless external hard drive?, Can I regard a time capsule as a wireless external hard drive?

Can I just regard a time capsule as a wireless external drive? I don't think I need time machine to back up, I just want more space to store my files (music, moves, photos). To save the space on my Mac, can I move those things to TC, and open them(watch movies, photos and listen to music) directly?
And, if I bootcamp windows 8 os, can I still share/use the stuff on the TC, like a regular(wireless) external hard drive?

Apple says specifically not to move iphoto to network drive.
    iphoto network no no.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.

  • Can I use Time Capsule as a wireless access point?

I am currently using a DSL modem/wireless router supplied by my ISP.  It is a CenturyLink 660 series.  My plan was to use the Time Capsule not only for back-up but to place it near other devices (my home theater receiver, Dish receiver, etc.) that do not have built in wireless capabilities.  How do I need to configure the TC in order to do this?  Details would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't make clear in the first post that you are wireless bridging .. and no Apple routers cannot be wireless bridged to non-Apple routers. You must run ethernet or have some equivalent.. eg homeplug (EOP) adapters.
But let me add wireless bridging is never a great idea. Using universal bridge or repeater hides the MAC address of all devices behind the bridge. The only way to do this without that problem is WDS. And it is not a proper standard. You will need to check first if the modem support WDS, and with what level security.. many devices only support WEP which is practically leaving the door open nowadays.
Or you pay extra and put another apple router into the mix as wireless AP off the modem.. the TC can bridge to that with full security.

Do you have another router? If not, then the TC must be connected to the modem by Ethernet cable for you to have a network.
