Time Capsule not showing up in AirPort Utility

Hi,
I'm having problems setting up my Apple time capsule, but have successfully managed to set up an Airport Express.
Im using a Virgin Media cable modem which is connected to a netgear wireless router. I've tried connecting the Time Capsule to the router (which is how i set up TC in my previous house)
The current set up is looking like this but Airport cannot find the TC
Cable Modem -> Ethernet -> Router -> Ethernet from Port1 on Router -> Port1 on TC
I have tried connecting it to the main connection ethernet port on the TC, Infact I've tried every cable configuration imaginable, but the TC still isnt getting recognised.
Has anyone else had this problem or got any suggestions as to how I can get this to work?
Thanks in advance
Matthew

First and formost, you're connecting an airport router to a router, you'll need to place your Airport in bridge mode when you set it up for better reliability. Reset the TC by holding the rest button on the back until the light on the front flashes rapidly. On your Mac, go to the Airport menu item in the upper right hand corner of the screen next to the time of day. Select the Apple Network from the drop down menu, it should then appear in the utility, rescan if it doesn't, if still not I can only guess you're running a older version of the utility, run software update.

  • How to resolve Time capsule not being seen in Airport utility?

My Time Capsule cannot be recognized by Airport utility.  I have already tried the soft reset option, but still no luck.
Trying not to do a hard reset, b/c I would prefer not loosing all of the information on the hard drive.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Trying not to do a hard reset, b/c I would prefer not loosing all of the information on the hard drive.
Any type of reset....soft, hard, or Factory Default.....will NOT touch the data on the Time Capsule drive.
You have to perform a completely separate Erase operation if you want to wipe the drive clean.
If you have not already done so, try connecting an Ethernet cable directly from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule. Power down both the Mac and Time Capsule and restart.  See if that helps AirPort Utility "see" the Time Capsule.
If not, then you will need to perform a Hard Reset or Factory Default Reset and start over again. You can use the same device name and passwords that you used before if you wish.

  • Time Capsule not Showing in Airport Utility

I decided to re-set my Time Capsule this afternoon. The green light is on but it is not showing in the Airport Utility and Time Machine says there is no back up disc available.
    What can I do?

Temporarily, connect a spare Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule.
Restart both your Mac and the Time Capsule and then open AirPort Utility to see if your Time Capsule has been found.
If the Time Capsule is still lost, disconnect the Ethernet cable and perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule as follows:
Pulll the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in while you plug the power cord back in to the Time Capsule
Keep holding the reset button an additional 8-10 seconds and then release the button
Allow 30-40 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the spare Ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports and open AirPort Utility to reconfigure the device

  • How to setup a guest network when the dialogue boxes do not show up in AirPort Utility 6.1

How do I setup a guest network when the dialogue boxes do not show up in AirPort Utility 6.1?
I see screenshots where there are boxes to 'enable' guest network but these simply do not apear on the Wireless tab in AirPort Utility

I now have a guest account, thanks to you!
I did the factory reset and was able to set up the guest account.
There were 3 problems, all of which I was able to solve.
The first problem was connect to Ethernet, which I selected by WAN port, as shown in the first screen shot. This page used to read just Ethernet and the Bridge Mode.
The second problem was whether to share a range of addresses or share a public IP address. I selected share a public IP address as shown in the first screen shot. I had tried the range of IP addresses in my earlier attempts, the ones that failed. Hopefully this will have no effect.
I have forgotten what the third problem was - only excuse is a few too many flavored drinks. I didn't have any problems solving it though.
What is really weird is I can log on to Guest and use on my iPad (first generation), my wife's iPod Touch (third generation), and my wife's 2011 MacBook Pro. I can't log onto Guest on my 2008 iMac, even after a restart. I get the image below.
Since I don't lug my iMac around a lot and it is connected by Ethernet, while my little make it right brain says figure this out, I am not going to worry about it.
Thank you again for your time and patience in helping me solve this.

  • HT4259 This article is outdated (as well as others). I have Airport Extreme (latest) and Time Capsule (earlier version) and newest Airport Utility version.

I have difficulty in setting up the newest Airport Extreme with Time Capsule. How to wire Time Capsule over ethernet is so confusing and the documentation I found is outdated.

    OK, thanks for the clarification.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable if it is plugged into the Time Capsule at this time.
With the Time Capsule powered on, hold in the reset button on the back of the device for 9-10 seconds and then release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
This will not affect any backups that you might have already stored on the Time Capsule.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule. I assume that you have tested the Ethernet cable independently to make sure that it is working correctly.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on Time Capsule.  The screenshot below shows an AirPort Express.....you will see Time Capsule on your screen.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Time Capsule will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Time Capsule. You can use the same name that you used before, then click Next.
Now AirPort Setup will indicate that the Time Capsule is being configured to extend using Ethernet. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.  That's it.

  • Time capsule not showing old backups

i bought the time capsule in the middle of october and set it up.  but when i got into the time machine to find the old backups it only shows the oldest back up as november 13th, and each day it moves to the next. ex tomorrow it will show the oldest as november 14th. and when i look at the time capsule i have only used 1.96 of the total 2 TB.  the "tick" marks on the side of the time machine dont always show the pink, which means it was backed up to the time capsule. it shows grey marks saying it was saved on the mac(as if i was not connected to the time capsule)

I'm using the Time Machine interface from the original icon in the dock.
I figured it out. Just a minute ago I went to Time Machine, it mounted the backup and showed it on my desktop but when the "space" view came I wasn't able to browse anything. It didn't show any dates. I exited Time Machine and immediately went back and now I was able to browse all the backups and all the backup dates were shown. I tried it later and again I couldn't browse my backups. This time I waited and finally they showed up and everything worked. It just seemed to take a long time for the backups to be browseable.

  • HT3728 Time Capsule LED is solid Amber, will not show up in Airport Utility after any resets.  Ideas?

Went to update my TC after adding my AppleID to the "Back to Mac" menu and in the Airport Utility screen a meesage popped up saying "An error ocurred while reading the configuration" and the TC disappeared from the Airport Utility screen.  Now there is just a solid amber light.  Unplugging the unit for over a minute and then plugging it back in has the same result.  A soft reset does nothing, a hard reset does nothing, and a factory reset gets the amber light blinking but when I release the reset it goes back to solid amber.  None of these resets gets the TC to show up in the Airport Utility.
    I appreciate any help.  Thanks.
    Model: A1409 Time Capsule 2TB

The solid amber light is an indication that the TC cannot get out of startup mode, likely due to a power supply component failure.
Solid amber is not power supply.. it is a dead hard disk.. the TC cannot finish its boot if the hard drive is not working.
    Jeepaxle
If the TC is in warranty or you have applecare on any computer Apple should replace it..
Otherwise it is the poor WD green drive they now use..
Open the TC and replace it.
Sometimes a low level format will revive them.. but I never trust a drive again that died.. Look for a 2TB hitachi or Toshiba.. (same thing). Far better than WD green.

  • Time capsule not showing in airport utility? recently moved house and new internet set up!

    Hi
I had a time capsule set up and working perfectly then we moved house, changed ISP and now time capsule light is flashing amber.  When I open the Airport Utility only the internet (i.e. a globe) shows, no time capsule.  My Macbook Pro has no ethernet port or I would have tried hardwiring!  I can enter the time machine but back up history is red.
I read that latest OS may require a rename of the capsule if the original name was long (29 characters including spaces at present) but to change it the support says to access it via the airport utiltiy which I can't do!
    Help anyone?!
    Sam

Simply factory reset the TC and start over.
Any time you move the network configuration the TC will require a new configuration.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • Time Capsule Not showing in Disk Utility

Right, There are a few things for my case:
Disk Utility doesn't show anything related to the Time Capsule.
There is a .purgeable in the disk in an attempt to delete the whole back up due to speed issues (using TM to delete it)
I can't delete the .purgeable file with Finder or tmutil
It doesn't back up because of the partially deleted image (It doesn't give an error, it's been like that for many many hours, tho)
I have files in a folder in the time capsule which stop me from trying to completely erase the content of it.
I have already resetted the laptop, networl, and time capsule
    Anyone can help me, please?
I'm using Mavericks and Airport Utility 6.3.2

Disk Utility will not display a network drive. It will only display a drive that is connected directly to your Mac using USB, FireWire, or Thunderbolt.
If you want to erase the disk on the Time Capsule......
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Disk tab at the top of the next window
    Click Erase Disk
The Quick Erase option will only take a few minutes
Zero Out will replace everything on the drive with zeros, probably taking 4-6 hours
    Click Erase

  • Time Capsule and PC Connectivity when Airport Utility is not available

I want to connect a PC to a time capsule via Ethernet to use the LAN Connection. The PC does not have Airport Utility installed (corporate restrictions) and does not recognise the connection when I plug in the network cable. How can I fix this problem? Would putting a switch inbetween work?

Did you replace the ethernet patch cord? Try a tested and known working good one.
Put a switch in between the TC and the faulty computer.. or occasionally faulty computer.
I am struggling to help because you feed bits of info in each post..
Please give me the entire picture all in one go.. start from scratch.
    1. TC.. model from rubber foot. How old? Vista computer.. make, model how old?
    2. How is TC connected into your network?
    3. Do the connectivity lights come on when you plug in the vista computer?
    4. If you swap win7 computer what speed does it link at.. 10, 100 or 1000mbps?
    5. If you set the vista computer to 10mbps does it link?
    6. If the vista computer works in a different LAN what speed does it link at?
    7. What happens if you remove the TC from the network, do a factory reset and then plug in the vista computer.. fully isolated from the existing network. Use a different patch cable.. known and tested to be good. just a short one is fine.
    8. Run the vista computer on linux boot disk so you can test the hardware.

  • Second AirPort Express not showing up in AirPort Utility

I got a second AirPort Express (APE) to extend my wireless in a different direction from the first but I have not been able to get the new one to show up in the AirPort Utility.
Here are some of the things that I have tried based on my research so far:
-Unplugged APE and waited 30 seconds then plugged it back in
-Pressed reset button untill light blinked, this caused the light to stay solid amber for several seconds then it started slowly blinking again
-Plugged in to Time Capsule with cable, this allowed me to configure the second APE but once I disconnected the cable it still would not connect wirelessly
-Disconected the first APE and "forgot" it in the AirPort Utility, still not able to set up 2nd APE
Did I get a bad unit?

    Answering my own post ...
I first directly connected the AX to the iMac using the ethernet cable, and was able to configure the AX (not sure that I actually had to do this, as my issue was probably due to poor signal strength - as described later). I then moved the AX back to the living room, and was able to connect again, but soon it was dropped. Determined that the signal was weak. I played with positioning the AX to optimize signal, and now am able to get OK signal (only about 1/3 strength, based on number of bars in "fan" shaped icon in menu bar). Was able to stream iTunes to stereo as well, which is great. Also determined that the 2WIRE system that Airport was trying to set up WAS my neighbor (and not my gateway/router). If you don't see "Apple XXXXX" base station and network listed when you are in Airport Admin Utility or Internet Connect (which I didn't, but since I was using 2WIRE gateway/router, assumed that it was my AX when the 2WIRE appeared in the Airport network connection option), then the AX is not properly set up (weak signal or other problem).
So, with the AX in the living room (front of the house), and the iMac in the sun room (back of the house), I am able to get OK, but not great signal from AX. So far, seems to be sufficient to connect to internet and stream iTunes. I may see if I can reposition the AX on the other side of the living room wall, but that will then require running a long cable to connect to the stereo.
Bottom line: 50ft. range of AX may be reduced when used in old (1920's era) houses (thick, plaster walls). Actual distance between AX and iMac is probably 30-40 feet, though they are separated by at least 3-4 walls. If repositioning to other side of wall doesn't do the trick, I may need to step up to Extreme.
I hope this helps others that might have similar problems.

  • Issues with Time Capsule (4th gen).. or Airport Utility?

I have som abstract issues with my Time Capsule. After some recent downtime with my ISP I thought I'd start digging around in the Time Capsules settings using the Airport Utility. Thing is though, when/if the TC shows up in the utility and I click it, it spins around at reading my settings for awhile, then I lose the connection to it entirely, it disappears from Airport Utility and I lose WiFi AND ethernet connection for a good five-or-so minutes. The unit still shows a green light.
I have a tiny bit more luck if I use Airport Utility in Windows 8.1 running through Bootcamp. I can click the Time Capsule without it "shutting down" on me and I can restart the unit through the software, but as soon as I try to change any settings or even enter my password to do so, the same thing happens.
This has happened to me in the past around 2012/2013. My first Time Capsule broke down and I had it replaced, the replacement unit did this to me as well, with the addition of WiFi not working at all so I had that replaced for a unit with the same issue... I kept this cycle replacing up and after about four or five Time Capsules I got the one I have right now which I ONCE managed to install and set up properly, but only through Windows and not OSX.
I just don't know what to do. I can't update the firmware because the airport utility can't read the settings properly as mentioned above, so I don't know if this issue is fixed through an update. Is this a common issue with the 4th gen Time Capsule? As I had it (or something like it) happen to four of the four or five units I've had I could guess it is..?
Any tips or hints, some obvious setting in OS X I could have accidentally

    That is quite a story.
The Gen4 up to recently I would say was clearly the best TC they made.. finally got out most of the bugs and it ran cool enough to survive at least the 3years they should. (You cannot hope for too much more in domestic grade routers now).
But there has now come up a heap of strange issues. Mostly the units just die.. but the use of Mavericks is also causing some problems.
It is possible to do this manually even in Mavericks and even using v6 utility.. although IMHO the v5 utility is a lot better.
I hope you have already got a replacement for your TC in terms of network. Anything you do here might remove the settings that work and you will be unable to put them back.. so don't start until you can know that a bypass is possible.
Also I would like you to do this a special way. And we have a problem immediately..
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
You must have ethernet. Do you have another computer with ethernet.. ?? Or can you get a friend to help with a laptop, PC or Mac that still has ethernet. Otherwise you need to buy a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter which are not too expensive. And well worth having.
You need to factory reset the TC and do this in full network isolation.
So one ethernet LAN port of the TC to the computer. Computer has no internet connection and no wireless on.
    1. Do the factory reset.
    2. Manually setup the TC by ethernet.
I have done this setup with screenshots in this thread. If you would please follow that.. anything you don't follow just ask.

  • New Air Port Time Capsule Not Working With Old Airport Express

I have been running a home network comprised of a Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) and 5 ea Air Port Express (A1264) for several years with no problem.
The Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) died and I replaced it with an Air Port Time (A1470). Now none of the Air Port Express (A1264) work, all flashing yellow. All other network functions seem to work okay, Time Capsule Backup, Apple TV, Internet …
I am using AirPortUtility 6.3.1 for setup but do not see any way to setup the Air Port Express.

Reset the Express to factory and start over.. they should work.. are you using all 5 in extend wireless mode?
When you reset the Express click on the wifi icon in the top menu area.. and the newly reset AEx will appear in the list.. click it and Airport utility will open and attempt to automagically connect it to the TC.

  • New 1TB Time Capsule Not Showing Up

Just bought a Time Capsule, using it with a Comcast modem. When I open Airport Utilities it doesn't show up during scans for wireless devices.
I've plugged it in, then connected the ethernet cable to the WAN port, connected WAN first then plugged it in, plugged it in and reset it during power-on, reset after powered on.
It DID show up once: I reset it as a plugged it in but got the flashing amber light, so I powered it down and powered it back on, all the while with the ethernet cable connected. The green light came on, so I opened Airport Utilities. The TC showed up, but when I clicked setup it failed to connect. After that it wouldn't show up in scans anymore.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Suggest you do a factory default reset and reconfigure the device as follows:
    Power down the TC
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the power back in
Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds
Connect the ethernet cable from your modem to the WAN port
Also, connect another ethernet cable directly from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC. This should help AirPort Utility "see" the device.
Restart both the TC and your computer
Open AirPort Utility to see if you can configure it now.
