Time Capsule not visible to my iMac (Yosemite 10.10)

Having given up on trying to access my TC via a BT HomeHub4 router, I've plugged it in via Ethernet to my iMac.  No other devices on the iMac.  iMac is connecting fine to internet via the HH4.  Despite this, I still can't access the TC.  Here's what I've tried:
TC is flashing amber status.
Open the Time Machine tab in System Preferences.  Made sure it is set to 'On'. Pressed 'Select Backup Disk'. Get a 'Other AirPort Time Capsule' icon, which I select.
Click 'Setup".
New window with a globe icon for the internet with a green status light.  Top left there is an 'Other Wifi Devices (1)' button, which I press - no other option.
This gives me a new list, the only not-greyed out option is my TC (I know it's mine because the name is right).
Select it and get a 'Gathering Information about your network' message, icon for the TC and a spinning wheel saying 'joining Airport TC....'.
Eventually it gives up and shows an error message 'An unexpected error occurred.  Try again.'
Trying again doesn't help.
I've reset the TC with a biro - pressing for one second, pressing for 5 seconds (for a fast flashing amber) and pressing while powering the TC on.
None of the above works.
Any ideas?  I don't know if it is connected to Yosemite?

I do not have yosemite installed on any computer.. I am getting old you see and spent my youth on the bleeding edge.. so that I have now too little blood left for installing latest greatest OS until you beta testers are finished.
So here are the lessons from Mavericks.. and all the ones that go before.. Take it if you wish.
Do the setup in full internet isolation.. turn off wireless and use only ethernet to the TC LAN port.
1. Factory reset the TC. (Again).
2. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the ethernet settings on the computer.. I am guessing this option is still available.
Note that the IP addresses must all be as shown.. The TC reset is 10.0.1.1 and the computer should be 10.0.1.2 although that is not a major one.. but if you use dhcp that should be correct.
3. Open the airport utility and do a manual setup.
Again I am making assumptions that the airport is there. And these options but I doubt it will have changed much.
4. Type in the IP address and proceed.. password should not be needed but is public.
5. Should now get the full summary page.. and you can do a full clean setup without the wizard bothering you.
Go to the base station tab and name it.. TCgen4 (for example) all names should be short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Go to the wireless and create a wireless network.. eg TCwifi
Set security to WPA2 personal with all alphanumeric password..
Go to network tab and make sure it is set to bridge.
Now update the TC.
Plug it into the HH by ethernet to its WAN port.
5. In finder use top menu, go, connect to server and force it to AFP.
AFP://TCgen4.local (or use whatever name you have in place of my suggestion).
You should be asked for a password.. we did not change it so it is still public. For now stick to default.
Does it mount?
Do any of the functions i have listed no longer exist in Yosemite?
I hope that all the pictures display as we have issues with apple site dropping the pictures out.. tell me if you cannot see them.

  • HT1175 3TB time capsule not working with new iMac

I have a 3TB time capsule that's c. 2 years old. It worked perfectly with my old iMac. I bought a new 27" one when it came out this year and since the time capsule will not work.
I had to clear all the data as a starter. Now it gets a little into the backup taking c. 1 day then resets. It's connected via ethernet cable and has been told to join an existing network.
Currently it says it's backing up 922,498 items, after 2 hours (this is the third attempt, it resets then has no record of the old backup) it says 10kb of 789.44 GB - About 4,664,440 days remaining!!
To clarify I'm trying to use Time Machine with the Time Capsule.
    Please help!!

You have made a mistake in the setup.
You do not "Join an existing networking" and use ethernet.. they are mutually exclusive.
What you are doing is backing up over double hop wireless which is slowing to a crawl.
You need to put the TC into bridge mode.. and plug it into the main router by ethernet. Then use wiretess to the TC if you are too far away or ethernet if you are close by..
As soon as you put the TC into join a wireless network it deactivates the ethernet.

  • Time capsule not visible on network

I'm trying to troubleshoot this situation for a colleague.
Situation: macbook air, synchronized wirelessly via time capsule. The time capsule is connected to the fixed network also. This is on our corporate network (both fixed and wifi networks). Backups via time capsule were working fine until yesterday (I see the last backup listed as yesterday).
Yesterday itunes prompted him to update his iphone to OS 5. After the update, the photo's were not synchronized. Upon synchronizing the photo's, the wrong button was clicked (my mistake, oops), and now all photo's are gone in iphoto. Now we're trying to get them back from the time capsule.
The time capsule is not visible in the network, not wired, not wireless. Connecting the macbook air via the fixed or wireless network doesn't reveal it. Airport utility says it cannot find anything. The time capsule is connected to power and network and the green light is on. I tried powercycling it, but this didn't make it appear.
    How can I resolve this?

Getting access to stuff in Time Machine is sometimes difficult.. it sounds like something has shredded the files..
Look at the info pondini gave to access the iphoto in particular.
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/15.html
Upgrading to latest OS particularly Lion in the Mac or ios5 is having all sorts of nasty consequences..
The thing is, if you have photos in there that will need recovery.. you should not use Time Machine or copy files to the TC until you have restored them. In fact the disk may need to be removed to see if they have been deleted but I have no experience with this and others might be able to give more info.

  • Time capsule not backing up my iMac

Apple replaced my Time capsule with a new one. Old one backed up 2 x macbooks and my iMac. The new one, whilst backed up the two mac books as before, tells me on my iMac that: Time Machine could not complete back up becuase there is a problem with my username or password. I put in the password - same as used on the macbooks, it accepts it, but then tells me the back up has failed again. Round and round we go. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

  • Files on time capsule not visible in Finder window

I copied files to my time capsule.  The time machine app works fine but only if it is running can I see the files I copied to time capsule.  I would like to use this disk for media storage for iTunes but if it is not visible a lot of the time then it isn't useful for that purpose

The Time Capsule is for your backups.
Three things....all bad...happen when you try to move the iTunes Media Folder to the Time Capsule disk.
    1) Access to media becomes much slower....typically 15-20 seconds before you will hear the song that you selected.
    2) The iTunes Media Folder tends to get lost, so you will have to manually reset the path to the folder frequently.
    3) When.....not if....the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you will lose all of your iTunes data.....because you have no backup of the ITunes Media Folder.
I've learned each of these things the hard way. If you still want to do this.....here are the instructions:

  • Time Capsule not visible when connecting via range extender

    Hi,
I have configured a TP-Link WA750RE to expand the range of my Time Capsule's wireless network. The range extender works fine for surfing the web etc., but the Time Capsule doesn't show up as my Time Machine backup device and the Time Capsule is not visible in my Airport Utility. What's even stranger is that when I click on "Configure other" (shift + command + o) in Airport Utility and type in my Time Capsule's IP-address and password, I can still access the devices' configuration menu.
When I move my Macbook very close to my Time Machine to connect directly to the wireless network, leaving out the range extender, none of the above mentioned problems occur. The TP-Link range extender has no NAT or port configuration that could possibly cause this problem, so I'm out of ideas for a way to solve this problem.
Thank you in advance for your help.

A non-apple range extender is not passing the protocols that apple uses.. eg bonjour.. This is a standard problem and why you stick with using Apple's own routers for extensions.

  • Time Capsule not visible in disk utility

i'm trying to create a disk image on my time capsule to so i can store some seperate media files and the time capsule is not available in the disk utility when its connected via the network. do I need to be connected through and ethernet cord for this to work?
    Thanks.

When you click New Image, a setup box will appear.
Make sure that the little arrow in the top box next to Save As appears in the "up" position
Look for your Time Capsule under the SHARED heading in the Finder window on the left
    Click the Time Capsule icon
Then double click on the Time Capsule folder to the right
Type a name in the Save As box at the top
    Name the Disk Image
Select the size of image that you want
Keep the format of Mac OS Extended Journaled and single partition and read/write disk image
    Click Create
It takes about an hour for a 25-30 GB disk image to be created, so do this using Ethernet. Allow 3-5 times longer if you do this using wireless
Some users find it easier to save the Disk Image to the desktop and then move it over the Time Capsule disk, but this takes longer.

  • External Hard disk connected to time capsule not visible in windows vista

I have connected my external hard disk to Time capsule. Am Able to find the same in my MBP in finder under shared. But with windows I am not able to see this hard disk. I have installed airport utility and am able to see the time capsule. What to do?

What is the format on the external USB drive?
Have you setup the disk in workgroup correctly to the network workgroup name?
Turn on guest read and write at least to get things started. If you turn on password or changed the default password you will need to remember that.
How are you trying to access the disk? It will more than likely not show up in network shares, without deliberately using the tc ip.. so open explorer and type in \\YOUR_TC_IP_ADDRESS\Share_name
If you have installed the airport utility for windows it should also install the required files to find the disk.

  • Time Capsule Not Visible In Finder Or Airport Utility

I recently purchased last week a 15" mac book pro and a 2 tb time capsule. This is my first mac and first experience with time capsule.I am running Lion. Ever since initial setup and a few calls to apple care the time capsule does not show up in finder or airport utility at times, sometimes it just re appears for a short while then disappears again. Apple care has had me hook directly up via cable to the capsule to switch channels thinking I was getting interference and also had me reset the keychain. I am still having the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem, or does anyone have a suggestion to fix this problem? Thanks!

Is the time capsule the main router in the network? If not try and rearrange the network so it will be.
I am not sure that Lion is working very well with TC. There are too many issues popping up.

  • Time Capsule not visible on WiFi network

Tried to set up a new Time Capsule via the airport utility but it will not identify a Wifi Network to connect to (objective is to enlarge the network, rather than to establish a new network). There is already an older model of time capsule connected to the same router via WiFi to enlarge the network and it works well.
Is it  really the only solution to connect the time capsule to the router via Cable and establish the connection like that? (That would be exactly what we do not want - another cable) Multiple resets to factory settings did not solve the issue. Anyone there to help? Thanks

There is already an older model of time capsule connected to the same router via WiFi to enlarge the network and it works well.
Connected by ethernet or by wireless?? What router is it connected to?
An apple router can only extend wireless of another apple router and only once.. ie you can have a main base and one repeater.. you cannot repeat twice.
You can use EOP (homeplug) adapters if ethernet is not suitable.

  • Time capsule not visible

My laptop can't seem to find my time capsule. I have used an Airport in the past and the laptop has no trouble finding it. I have also used the time capsule strictly as a hard drive connected directly to my laptop. Now I would like to make the time capsule my router, but the laptop can't find it. Any help appreciated!

    Hi Jason,
If you are trying to find the Time Capsule wirelessly, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on the Time Capsule to your computer.
Then open Airport Utility and it should "see" your Time Capsule so you can configure it. Once you have your wireless network set up, Airport Utility should be able to find it wirelessly in the future.

  • Time Capsule not visible to Choose Backup Disk

    I have a 500GB Time Capsule 7.4.2 and two 13" Macbook laptops (Mid 2007 - 2.16GHz and Mid 2009 2.13 GHz, both running 10.5.8)
Both Macbooks were using the TC for TM backups, wireless access point and a shared printer. A few months ago the 2.16GHz quit backing up to the TC. Still accesses the internet and prints to the printer. While troubleshooting, I turned off TM in system preferences, and now cannot get TM turned back on in the sys pref. When I select Time Machine ON, and select the "Choose Backup Disk" button, there are no drives listed
The 2.16 Macbook (troublesome one) can access the TC in AirPort Utility and view and update all the configuration, but still cannot see the drive in the Time Machine sys pref. In the finder this laptop can see the TC in the Shared Resources but when trying to connect gets the "this file server is running on your machine"
The 2.13 Macbook still updates to the TC with no issues. Also can access the TC in AirPort Utility and TM sys pref with no problems. When connecting to the TM in the Finder it connects and can view both Macbook parsebundles.
Neither laptop can view the TC in Disk Utility, but I think they need to be connected via CAT V to make that work.
Can any help me get the 2.16 Macbook backing up to the TC again? Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Most likely, the sparse bundle for that Mac is corrupted. Repair it per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Thanks for the help. I completed the Repair as directed in A5 of the trouble-some Macbook parsebundle. This had to be completed from the other Macbook since it was the machine in which I could see the parse bundle to drag to the disk utility.
I am still having the same issue. The 2.16 MB cannot see any drives to choose from when turning on TM. Also this same laptop cannot connect to the TC under the shared grouping in the Finder sidebar.
Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Time Machine not visible from SNow Leopard

I have a Time Capsule that has been performing sterling duty on my iMac and Macbook for the past couple of years.
Having just upgraded the Macbook to Snow Leopard I set it to backup for the first time (>60 GB) which took a day or so over Wifi - at this point the backup was visible and browsable.
After the backup the time capsule is visible in the Finder and I can see the sparsebundle, however the preferences suggest that I need a new backup and I cannot enter Time Machine.
The iMac, still running 10.5.8, can still see it's own backups.
There is approx. 250GB left on the Time Capsule.
    Any help?

Yes, just not finding anything changed. What's in the +Do not back up+ box in TM Preferences > Options, and what's the "Estimated size of full backup? just below it?
    Are you running File Vault?

  • After receiving "identical" Time Capsule 3rd gen replacement, my iMac no longer sees my HP LaserJet2420 that my previous Time Capsule enabled seeing

I no longer remember how my USB-connected HP laser printer was seen with my iMac connected through Time Capsule.  Oddly enough, my iMac also no longer sees the printer when connected directly to iMac.  What the heck happened?  They used to work fine together!

A printer that is directly connected has to be recognised to be installed..
I guess the first thing to do is open system profiler and check that the USB is recognising the printer.. If so then the issue is purely drivers.. if not it is bad usb cable.. bad usb port.. bad printer. Plug it into the computer via a powered usb hub.
If the USB does see the printer but the drivers don't work.. I stand by the comment.. delete all printers and start again.. multiple printers can mess things up equally as well as old drivers.. especially if you did an upgrade install.
What a shame you didn't buy the network version.. in the future.. never buy usb.. always buy network printers. Any printer called a workgroup printer without network is a contradiction in terms.
Once you get it working on the computer then you need to start all over again to get it running on the TC again.. man ethernet or wireless printer looks better and better all the time. usb .. shudder.

You should be able to change the permissions on the files.. this is yet another bungle by Mavericks I suspect.

Sometimes it is because you Migrated wrongly.

It is not up to Mavericks because sadly the guy who wrote all this great info died recently.
