Time Capsule Now Missing as Wireless Device

All of a sudden TC is no longer available as a wireless device for back-up to time machine. However, I am still connecting to the internet wirelessly through it.
Any suggestions on how I can get it up and available again?

You should reset it and configure from the beginning its network and passwords. Then you shall get stuck in my own situation...

  • Setting up a Time Capsule as just a wireless backup device

All I want to do is set up a Time Capsule as a backup wireless device. I already have a functioning network on a Linksys rounter (and some of the users on this network have PC's and want NOTHING to do with my Apples-MacBook and MacBook Air). Where exactly do I connect the ethernet cable? The router as some suggest or the modem? And which ports? The set instructions are unclear and before I throw the network into chaos with an unwanted router, I would love some exact suggestions. I have connected nothing as yet. Thanks.

Welcome to the discussion area, dcarmel!
To configure the Time Capsule (TC) for backups only when another router is already present on the network, you would do the following:
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Linksys router to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab below the row of icons to establish a name for your TC, a device password (write that down) and adjust time settings.
    Click the Wireless tab
    Wireless Mode = Off
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update and the TC will restart and you should have a green light in 30-40 seconds. That's it.
Backups will occur over the Linksys wireless network. But, for the first main backup of your Mac(s), it would be great idea to connect them using an ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the Time Capsule since you'll be backing up the entire computer on the first pass. Ethernet will be much faster than wireless. You can do subsequent incremental backups using wireless since these normally only take a few moments.

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a few minutes
Push the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
See if the Time Capsule will back up now
If not, see #C12 in this document:

  • How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.

How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

  • Time Capsule only works for one device at a time, how to make it capable to be used for multiple devices at times

Time Capsule only works for one device at a time, how to make it capable to be used for multiple devices at times.
Please help to set it up, thanks in advance

You need to give more info..
Firstly only works for what.. networking.. backup.. wireless. You need more nouns.. more adjectives... describe what you want and what fails.. then we can figure out why.
Most likely you have bridged it when it should be in router mode..
Most likely you are using Lion or ML which has the airport utility bridge the TC by default.
Change it to working as a router. That might help.
If you press reset button it will default back to router btw.
If you are on Lion.. use a real utility. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1547

  • Time capsule now does not work with Lion just installed.

Just downloaded Lion to Mac Air. Time capsule now does not work. Where is the problem?

Restart the TC.. lion is stupid.. it forgets what it is connected to with alarming frequency ... like someone suffering dementia.
If it continues to have issues, plug the TC directly to the lion computer by ethernet (if not already) and try again. Change the wireless to manual in airport utility and change the wireless name.. to force a new configuration. Once setup you can just use wireless.
In the end you may need to reset the TC.. just hold in the reset button for about 10sec. It should then become available.. a reset does not do anything to data on the hard drive but you might need to restore any passwords.

  • Installing Time capsule with U-Verse Wireless Network

    Hi all,
I am not a techy, but I get by. I am going to install the Time Capsule and I realized that I don't think this will work with my existing U-Verse Fiber wireless network. After some thought, I believe I should just use this for wireless backup and peripheral operations rather than the internet as my current wifi also operates the televisions in the house.
I'm hoping to get some guidance from the community as to how to use this device without having to purchase more equipment or re-wiring my entire home. Can I just plug it in and use it for wireless backup or will it interfere with my internet service (which I am happy with)?
    Any thoughts?

    Welcome to the discussions!
You are correct to allow your existing setup handle internet connections.
The simplest setup would be to configure your Time Capsule to "Join" the wireless network created by the U-Verse router. Your computers will be able to backup via wireless assuming that you have a good connection.
If your U-Verse router provides ethernet ports for devices (it likely does), you would also have the option of connecting the Time Capsule to the U-Verse router with an ethernet cable. This would make sense if the Time Capsule will be located near the U-Verse router as ethernet is both faster and more reliable than wireless.
Not to get too technical here, but if you connect the TC this way, you will set Connection Sharing on the TC for "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If you connect the Time Capsule via ethernet, you would also have the option to setup the Time Capsule to "create" its own wireless network. So, you would have two wireless networks available...one created by the U-Verse router and the other created by the Time Capsule.
If you have computers capable of wireless connections at "n" speeds, they could connect to the Time Capsule and your other "g" devices would connect to the U-Verse. In fact, if you purchase a new dual band TC, it will be capable of creating two wireless networks on its own.
So, you have a number of options available. Just depends on how simple or complex you want things to be.

  • Time capsule functionality through a wireless connection (Airport Express)

    Hi all,
I've searched through quite some topics though i did nog find an answer to this probably easy question. Either it was to technical for me or i just did'n look that good...
Can i connect a time capsule through an existing wireless network (newly bought airport express) and use all functionality from the TC? For example the dual network possibility. (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), connecting the TC to a printer via USB, connecting desktop computer through an ethernet connection. etc, etc,
So the set up would be the following:
    1. Airport express downstairs connected to the modem from the internet provider
    2. Upstairs 2nd floor, TC wireless connected to the airport express.
    Hope you can help!
    grt Walter, (from the netherlands)

Your express is a G wireless model and not compatible with the N wireless TC.
You can use it but only by using it with ethernet and setting it up as AP.. you also need to use 5.6 utility not v6.. apple removed support for G wireless devices from v6.
    LOL..
    I was 2min late.

  • Can apple time capsule act as a wireless hard drive storage by Samsung smart tv?

Can apple time capsule act as a wireless hard drive storage by Samsung smart tv? Samsung smart tv is connected to apple time capsule through wireless  as a modem at the moment

If you look on the right side there pops up similar questions.. which works better than search btw..
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16432256#16432256
The Samsung.. may not be able to see the Time Capsule hard disk..
because it does not contain any files it can read.
because it is not conformed to standard SMB file system.. the TC name is often illegal.. remove all spaces and special characters and keep it short.
Same for wireless name and all passwords.
There is no media player in the TC so it is useless for your TV even if it can see the hard drive .. the TC is a dumb backup device.

how do i set up the time capsule with only a wireless net work? it keeps asking me to plug in a cable and i do not have one.

Are you using a v6 uitlity.. because it is a toy.. ??
Get v5 utility and then you can hold down the option key and select the right mode.
If you have lion, just install it.. For ML follow this.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

  • Can I Use My Time Capsule as a 2nd Wireless Router? Pls Help

Thanks for trying to help. I have a Time Capsule that I'm currently using to back up my files. My next door neighbor is willing to share his internet with me for half the monthly cost. He already has a wireless router and I can connect to it (no probs) except the signal strength is not so powerful since I'm a couple feet far from his router. I was wondering if I can use my Time Capsule to hook up the internet via WIFI through his wireless router (that way I have a stronger signal strength from my Time Capsule). Basically using my Time capsule as a 2nd wireless router.
Neighbour's wireless Router = Time Capsule = My Macbook
If I can please tell me how to set this up in details please. thanks for your time.

You are trying to set up the Time Capsule as a Wireless Router
and Repeater? - To share an existing wireless network, wireless?
The AirPort Extreme was capable of repeating (like a transceiver)
to and from an existing wireless network, to expand upon it; but
only did this with another AirPort product, such as an Express.
The Time Capsule and many of its features are outlined here, with more
information: AirPort + Time Capsule: http://www.apple.com/support/airport/
You may have to direct your question regarding expanding an existing
wireless network, to the Discussions section for the specific products.
Usually, the "extend a network" wireless feature in the software setup
    only applies to the use of a second Apple AirPort-type base station;
such as the Extreme, Express, etc. The compatibility is between the
AirPort-like Apple products; but a bridge could be made if an Express
were attached to the other wireless network via Ethernet cable, then
the Time Capsule may be able to see it. This would require testing.

  • Time capsule not working as wireless router

I am having trouble with my time capsule working as a wireless router.  It appears in airport utility and the green light is on.  It is backing up my computer which is hardwired with via ethernet.  The network setting is on bridge.  Any thoughts?

Your first statement and last statement are in conflict.
I am having trouble with my time capsule working as a wireless router.
The network setting is on bridge.
If the TC is set to bridge it cannot work as a router. To be a router the TC must be set to dhcp + nat.
If you already have a router, then the TC should be in bridge. That is correct. If the modem is pure modem then the TC is in the wrong mode to work.
You should have the wireless set to create a wireless network..
Use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Set a different name for 2.4ghz and 5ghz until you sort the problem.. if it is just connection to wireless issue.
Please clarify what is the problem.
