Time Capsule off-line

I have an iMac which is connected to my Time Capsule via cable, plus a MacBook Pro with a wireless connection. When I tried to get the MacBook Pro to communicate with the TC, it had to take the TC off-line as part of the process. Now the TC won't re-start -- amber flashing light rather than green steady light. I have tried turning power to TC off and then on again to no avail.

Open AirPort Utility and click on the yellow button to find out what the error message is. If it has to do with your broadband connection, TC will flash amber. I assume the WAN port of the Time Capsule is connect to your broadband modem. Try restarting your modem.

  • Can I use Time Capsule off a Netgear Router?  Can it work with a hub?

Hi, I have a Sling Box set up with a modem and a Netgear router and a bridge. The sling box does not support an Airport base station. I also have a Time Capsule which works off a modem and I can not get to work off my Netgear router. How do I avoid having (and paying for) two internet networks in my house. Someone suggested using a hub. I have no experience. Does this make sense? Thank you.

Duane - you seem to be a very active user and I am new to Mac. I am considering a time capsule and / or Air Port extreme. I have a PC I would like to put on the wireless network (still use it until my transition is complete) and would like to do some wireless printing on my HP L7780 OfficeJet Pro All-in-One. I would appreciate some advice of what and / or how to do this.

  • Time capsule e linea dsl con ethernet?

Come connettere la linea ADSL a time capsule?

Does that in turn suggest that I should connect the Time Capsule directly to Airport Express?
when possible always run ethernet.. it is fast and reliable.. only when there is no other choice use wireless to link routers.. it is always poor.
You can use wireless from laptop to the Express or the TC.. that is fine.. but keep the wireless usage to something close and just once.. no double hop over wireless.
If you have ethernet there, use it.
Simply put the TC in bridge mode.. that is router bridge.
And make sure you are creating a wireless network on the TC.. same name and same security setting and password as the Express.. then the laptop can connect to whichever it is nearest to.
If you need complete diagrams or screenshots just ask.
life is a lot more complicated than it was when I bought my first 128K Mac in 1984.
Not always.. networking with modems and telephone wires was not always fun.. !!
You forget what it was like 30years ago.. !!
I started about that time but could never afford Macs. When I think of all the money I spent on computer gear over the years it is frightening.

  • TM has been backing up to Time Capsule for a month, but there's nothing there

Brand-new retina MacBook Pro (512 GB SSD) connected to brand-new Time Capsule (3 GB).
Software is all up-to-date (Mountain Lion).
After purchasing and setting up this top-of-the-line system last month, Time Machine was configured to make backups on the Time Capsule.
As best as I can tell, Time Machine has been quietly doing it's thing. The TM icon in the menu bar has been spinning around every hour or so, backing up my work (mostly Office 2011 activities). Or so I thought.
Last week, Microsoft Office 2011 suffered a meltdown and hosed the all-important Microsoft database file. My Outlook Mail, Calendars and Contacts were all inaccessible. Off I went to Time Machine to recover a previous version of the database file. To my surprise, upon entering TM, there was nothing there. A Finderesque window displayed my MS Identities folder, over the star wars background. The go-back-in-time arrow did nothing. The calendar slider on the right was grayed out.  According to TM, there are no previous backups to browse.
However, the available space on the TC hard drive has dropped to 2.1GB, suggesting that TM has written some 800 GB to the drive during the last month of backup activity. I've not copied any other data to the Time Capsule, so the 800 GB that's been consumed has to be due to Time Machine.  My hours/days/weeks of backed-up data seems to be on the TC hard drive, but it's invisible to Time Machine.
The TC appears to be operational. I can mount the /Data volume, see the backups.backupd folder. I mounted the sparseimage -- all that's in it is a single file timestamped 10-1-2012 whose extension is .inprogress. The TC is working fine as a WiFi access point, an ethernet switch and gateway router connected to my ISP.
I spent over three hours on the phone with five different advisors from AppleCare. At the end of it all, the senior advisor's advice was to send the Time Capsule off to a 3rd party data recovery company and see if they could recover the TM data files. At my (considerable) expense. To rub salt in the wound, he refused to dispatch a replacement Time Capsule so I could maintain my business (i.e connectivity to the internet, WiFi network) while the Time Capsule was off being analyzed.
So where did my 800GB of TM backup data go?  It must be on the TC drive somewhere, even if Time Machine can't find it. And how on earth can Time Machine pretend to be working for over 4 weeks when it's not?  There's little point in copying backup data to the Time Capsule if one can't access the information.

Is there any other way to locate data on the Time Capsule hard drive that Time Machine put there? Entering Time Machine doesn't find any backups. Can I use Disk Utility to analyze the TC hard drive? I've tried using the Finder to locate the 800 GB which is supposed to be there.  Should I send the Time Capsule off to a data recovery company, as recommended by AppleCare?
    Thanks.

  • Time capsule won't talk to Speedstream 5360

I have a speedstream 5360 with AT&T dsl. It works fine with at linksys router. When connecting the time capsule I get flashing amber and message that it can't connect to PPPoE. I shout both speedstream and time capsule off for 6 hours and retried with no success.

Last night I replaced the Time Capsule with a Belden N+ router. It immediately connected to the internet through the Speedstream.
Took the time capsule to Genius Bar and they decided to replace it. Will take three days.

  • I need a backup system, but do not need another wireless system. Does Time Capsule offer just a backup option?

When I looked up Time Capsule on line, I found it provides backup and wireless connection. I don't want another wireless set up, just backup. Can I get just backup option with Time Capsule or do I have to seek an outside external backup device?

Does the OP mean he doesn't need a "wireless" system or does he mean that he doesn't need an additional connection to the Internet?  The latter is my situation.  I'm just wondering -- if I'm perfectly happy with my current routers --will it be easy to add a TC to my current setup?   Would the TC get Ethernet-plugged into the router, or can it stand by itself (closer to where we have the printer)?

  • Does theAirPort Time Capsule have to be left on all the time

Do I have to leave the NEW UPRIGHT  Time Capsule on and connected to the power all the time

There are two different schools of thought as far as the Time Capsule (and other Apple routers as well)
If Apple had wanted you to turn off the Time Capsule on a regular basis, they would have included an "Off" switch on the device, or a means to turn off the Time Capsule from your computer.
Clearly, Apple designed the Time Capsule is designed to be left on most of the time.
There is  less stress placed on an electronic device when it is left on, as opposed to turning it off and on constantly.
Yet, it is true that turning the Time Capsule off will save a bit of energy.
Knowing that just about any decision involves trade offs, you will have to decide which school that you want to join.

  • Poor Wireless Singnal... TIme Capsule

    Hi.
I have got 50mb broadband with Virgin Media... I have connected the cable modem via ethernet to my TC. Then connected the TC via ethernet to my iMac.
The internet speed is very slow... I tried to disconnect the TC form my iMac and connecting the cable modem directly to the iMac... in this case internet speed increased...
What seems to be the problem? Is there something wrong with the TC?

The Time Capsule is either faulty or the configuration settings are incorrect for your device.
I would suggest that you contact Apple in this regard. My guess is that will first ask you to return the device to factory default settings and then reconfigure it again.
If you want to do this yourself in advance of contacting Apple, here is how to return the device to factory default settings:
    Power the Time Capsule off
Hold in the reset button and while you continue to hold it in, plug the power cord back into the Time Capsule
Continue holding the reset button 10 seconds after you plug the power back in and then release the reset button
This will erase any possible corrupted settings in the Time Capsule so you can start fresh.
If you reconfigure the device and still have the same issues, this definitely points to a defective Time Capsule that should be exchanged.
Please let us know how things work out.

  • Trouble joining an Airport Express to an existing Time Capsule network

I have been trying to add an Airport Express to my existing network. Apples to Apples, right? Easy!
    Nope!!!
I have a 1TB Time Capsule connected to a cable modem. As well as wireless, I also have an 8-port gigabit switch connected to the Time Capsule to extend the network to a series of wired clients around the house. My intention was for the Airport Express to provide better wireless reception upstairs and to stream music from iTunes to my home stereo system.
I have tried connecting the Airport Express to the Time Capsule directly using Cat5 as well as to the switch (which shouldn't make any difference...) I have tried configuring it to extend the existing network manually as well as through the Airport Utility wizard.
All seems okay at first but, for some reason, it seems to kick the Time Capsule off the network (it isn't listed in Airport Utility,)and then I can't connect to the internet nor can Time Machine see the disk in the TC for backups!!
The Airport Express does not even show up in iTunes.
I hard reset the Airport Express and try again, and same thing...
What am I doing wrong and how do I repair this?
Thanks for any help on this issue.

I haven't heard it called that, but you could say that was true.
If you are configuring the Express manually, open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base station tab below the icons to assign a name for your device, password and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab to enter the wireless settings.
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact name of your main wireless network
Radio Mode = Your choice depending on what you need. A good general choice would be 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) as this will allow all devices to connect
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your main wireless network
Password = Same password as your main wireless network
    Confirm password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save settings.
This is the way commercial wireless networks are designed, except on a much larger scale. This provides the maximum bandwidth on the wireless network and best performance.
This is sometimes called a "roaming network" because computers will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the best signal, which will usually be the closest device.

  • PPPoE error on Time Capsule

    Hi
I am having intermittent problems with my Netgear Router and Time Capsule. Around 2 or 3 times a day I lose my internet connection to my Mac. The green light on the Time Capsule starts flashing orange and when i check in Airport Utility I get an error message stating that no PPPoE server can be found. The internet light on the Netgear Router (model no. DG834GT, running in modem only mode) is still solid, as is the light for the ethernet connection to the TC. I then turn the Router and Time Capsule off for 30 seconds and power them back on, and once both have fully restarted all works well again.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be going or how i might troubleshoot this issue?
    thanks
    nick

You dont need to be using PPPoE.
Your netgear is your modem/router which connects to talktalk.
Setup your TimeCapsul in bridge mode. To do that goto your airport utility.app in your /Applications/Utilities
Select your Time Capsule. Choose manual setup.
Click on the 'internet icon' in the toolbar.
on the 'connection sharing' drop down menu select 'Off Bridge Mode'
    then update.
Then on your mac goto SystemPreferences-->Network
look on the list of available ports and delete any that have PPPoE reference.
    Then apply.
Now try connection to your wireless network.
At this point you may want to login to your netgear router and turn off its wifi. As your TimeCapsule is your wireless access point.

  • Time Capsule not being recognised

I've recently had to turn time capsule off and unplug from my Mac. I attached it this morning, green light came on, tried to back up data but it keeps saying 'Your Time Machine Backup Disc Cannot Be Found'.
However, despite this, I can open up the time machines preferences / select disc / set up time capsule and see that it's on the left hand side of the screen with a green light.
I've tried re-setting with the small push in switch at the back and restarting my computer etc. but i'm having the same issue each time. Any ideas?

I would do a reset of the TC and make sure you are using ethernet..
If it still fails after a reset try with wireless.
If it is a gen 3 TC many are failing with issues on the board.. even if the Green LED is on, the connection is not working.. shut the TC down overnight to cool off and see if it can be detected when first turned on..
What OS on the computer?? Has it been updated lately?

  • Xfinity WiFi Router AirPort Time Capsule....help??

I just upgraded my home internet and Xfinity sent me a new modem. It turned out to be a modem/router. After installing it, I set it up exactly how my previous router was so that it cooperated with my AirPort Time Capsule (phone line & cable > Xfinity router/modem > Airport Time Capsule (plugged into the first Ethernet port)). At first, I was getting an internet signal from my AirPort network even though it was blinking orange. AirPort Utility then popped up and told me I needed to switch it to "bridge mode" (I think that's what it was) so I did. I got a soild green light after that.
So now I have two WiFi networks broadcasting in my house...the Xfinity modem/router is putting out its own network, and then my AirPort Time Capsule is putting out another, which is the same original network that I had always used.
I feel like this is somehow not the most efficient way to set this up. I also want to make sure I'm getting the fastest signal possible and it isn't being cut in half because of the two networks or something like that...I know I could just get rid of the AirPort Time Capsule altogether and connect to the Xfinity modem, but I want to keep the AirPort to access files saved on it, use it for Time Machine, etc.
Any help? I'm thinking that I'm missing a step somewhere...

You are not connected to an ISP.. you are connected to a building shared internet.. this is private IP address and there is no way for you to access it remotely.
You must buy internet services, cable, adsl, even wireless of some sort,, that will give you a routable public IP.

  • Resolving issues with ios7 connecting to time capsule?

We upgraded our iPhone 4s and 5 to ios7. Now, they are having really random but frequent issues connecting to the wifi provided y a newish time capsule. A first generation iPad now has the most reliable connection!  Although, frequently the speed is much less than was typical.
All was good before the OS upgrade and there have been no other changes in electronics in the house. We have only about three neighbors networks that infiltrate the house - at least visible ones.
I have tried taking the time capsule off auto channel select to no avail.
My best guess is our iPhone's are the cause of the network outages on the time capsule. Some form of interference or ??
Going to map my wifi coverage later this week ....  But I am betting that will tell me the coverage is generally good.
Anyone with similar issues?  Any thoughts on how to resolve?  Can't downgrade the iPhone software.

Look around the forums here.. there are heaps and heaps of issues with iOS 7.. it has caused more problems for wireless networking than any of the earlier ones.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23279758#23279758
Works better with the TC in router than bridge mode.
ll was good before the OS upgrade and there have been no other changes in electronics in the house. We have only about three neighbors networks that infiltrate the house - at least visible ones.
I would ring apple support.. after all, they caused the problem.

  • Canon MP810 printer on Time Capsule permanently off line

I've just got a new Time Capsule.
My Canon MP810 printer was recognised immediately, but whatever I have tried, my Macbook shows it as off line.
    Can anyone help?

    Welcome to the discussions!
There are a number of things that could cause your printer to be off line, so the best plan would be to use the Apple Troubleshooting Guide to work through the possibilities.
Sometimes the last step...resetting the printing system...will resolve an issue like yours, but it is best to start at the beginning of the guide.
Also bear in mind that although your printer is recognized, it may or may not function correctly when installed at the USB port on the Time Capsule. If it is compatible and you have an all in one device, only the printing function will work when the device is connected at the USB port on the Time Capsule. If you need to scan, copy, or perform maintenance functions, you will need to connect the Canon to your computer.
