Time Capsule - Perhaps a question too early, but interesting possibilities

I'm quite intrigued with Time Capsule. My main concern with backup is making sure that in case of a catastrophe, my information is not lost. I don't care about music/movies, etc. I can always replace the CDs/DVDs commercially--as long as I keep a list of what I have/had. Photos, home movies, and personal legal and financial documents are a bit more difficult to replicate. Especially the photos--I'd be devastated to lose pictures of my family.
Today, I pay $20 per month or so for back-up of vital information, to be stored offsite (presumably protection from a fire, etc.), but this is not enough to store my photos, so I have Time Machine for the pictures backing up to another drive. Not the most elegant solution, but the "rip to DVD periodically" approach is too unreliable (who remembers to do it?).
I work in a small office where there is a VPN set-up, connected to my house.
My question is simply this. Could a Time Capsule be set up in my office to backup machines automatically at my house? From my office computer, I can ping various devices on my home computer (can print to a networked printer at home, and from home print to a computer at the office, etc.). Is there any reason why technically this would not be possible (presumably the Time Capsule can be password protected, work as a wired network device, etc., etc., etc.).
Perhaps there is no answer today, since no one owns a Time Capsule to attempt this, but with the cancellation of the other back-up service, presumably, that $20 per month is freed up to do something else, and a TB of storage would backup all the files I need for quite some time...
Thoughts?

Since you are able to successfully access your home network, via VPN, from the office, there's a good chance you should be able to access the Time Capsule's hard drive as well. My best guess, at this time, is that you should be able to backup your home computers with a Time Capsule from your Office.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

My new iPad with Retina Display is not able to connect to the Wi-Fi of my new Time Capsule. It use to connect, but now it just spins and spins and never connects. I've tried rebooting everything many times.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Airport Extreme and Time Capsule – A few questions

    Hey guys,
I have a Belkin Modem/Router with a USB port for storage, but I just found out it only has 10/100 Ethernet, and can only mount 1 hard drive to that storage port. Other than that, it works fine and I am happy with it. Its stated wireless speed is 300mbps, and it supports 802.11n draft 2.0.
I also just got a Mac, and was considering a Time Capsule for using Time Machine (Or, because am also considering a Drobo, just a straight Airport Extreme).
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there any point in keeping the Belkin to use as my modem if it’s got 10/100 Ethernet ports? Will that make the Time Capsule/APE (And hence the attached drives/devices) perform at the slower speed?
    2. I don’t know if I can just “turn off” the Belkins Router abilities anyway. Assuming I can’t, will having 2 routers on my network even be possible? (Mac’s software is infinitely more user friendly, and I’d want to use it for my network).
    3. Is there a limit to how many Hard Drives I can connect to an Airport Extreme/Time Capsule? (My Belkin can only share one, even via a USB Hub – it only sees the first drive.)
    4. For now, my storage drives are standard HDD’s from WD and Seagate, but I am considering a Drobo (Some form of RAID storage is happening in the next few months, for sure).
    In either case:
    a) Will Airport Extreme recognize my External Hard Drive as a Time Machine Backup Destination? (And as a Drive to store other media)
    b) Will Time Capsule recognize my external hard drive, in addition to itself (Since it’s also a Hard Drive?)
    5. This page: ((http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/features/harddrivesharing.html)  says: “You can set up password-protected accounts for everyone on the network or allow read-only access to certain files and folders.”
Some folders, I don’t even want to allow read only access to. Can I require a password before they can be viewed, or modified/deleted? (If I go the time capsule rout, I would want to protect the drives attached to it, and probably not the HD on the capsule itself).
    6. Also, the rest of my computers are PC’s, and I was wondering if it’s possible (and safe) to set up time machine to backup to the time capsule for Mac, and allow the other PC’s to backup to it using their version of “Time Machine” too?
I know this will leave less room for mac and PC backups, but it would free up room on my Drobo / HDD’s
    7. Can Time Machine backup wirelessly to other drives, such as http://shop.nextbyte.com.au/Script/MCH/Products/532195-NextByte-WDBACG0020HCHAES N-WD-My-Book-Live-2TB
Thanks so much for your help.
P.S. Can anyone recommend a good modem to use with the Airprort/Time Capsule?

    No help?

  • HT4522 Multiple computers on Time Capsule.  "Backup is too large for the backup disk"   ???

I am getting the following error:
    "Time Machine Error
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The
backup requires 15.38 GB but only 3.94 GB are
    available."
I have a two MacBook Pros that I have been backing up to my 1 TB Time Capsule using Time Machine.  Recently, I have started getting errors saying that there is not enough space to complete backups.  Between the two MacBook Pros, there is a max of 400 GB that I am trying to backup.  I thought that old backups were deleted to make room for new ones - so what gives?
I used Migration Assistant to migrate everything from the old MacBook Pro (2009) to a new MacBook Pro (2011).  I also used Migration Assistant to Migrate everything from an old MacBook to the old MacBook Pro (2009).  So, I am now only using the two MacBook Pros (2009 and 2011).
Is it possible that there are old backups on the Time Capsule from the MacBook and the MacBook Pro (2009) from before the Migration?  If so, how do I find them and delete them?
My goal is to create more space on the Time Capsule so I can continue backups of the two Pros.  Thanks for the help in advance.  Sorry if this is confusing.  Please ask questions to clarify.

The time machine does not work as well when there are multiple computers using the TC.
It really does not seem able to dispose of the old backups.
    Pondini may help..
    http://pondini.org/TM/C4.html
IMHO.. The best bet is to plug in a USB drive large enough to save everything on the TC and do a back directly from the airport utility.. disk, archive..
Then wipe the TC using erase.. and do a fresh TM backup on both computers.
Keep the USB drive in a draw for a year and a day.. after that you can assume anything on it is no longer required wipe it and do another backup of the TC.

  • Time Capsule and iPhone question

I recently replaced my Airport Extreme (802.1b/g) with a Time Capsule and went through the standard installation and setup procedure - no problems. I assumed that the TC was operating in 802.11N mode - there did not seem to be an option to set during the installation process. I must admit that I did not notice a marked improvement in my network speed but assumed all was well. Now some weeks lated I bought an iPhone - it immediately connected to my network. I did not even think about the N vs b/g issue. Now reading this forum I noticed that iPhones are b/g so does this mean my network automatically "downgraded" from N to b/g or has it always been running in b/g. Note I before I installed my T/C I turned-off my old AE.
I cannot figure out how to determine what mode my network / TC is running in. Can I easily swap back and forth when I need to have my iPhone connected.
I have read the thread on this forum on how to have 2 bridged networks - one with N and one with b/g (might be a good way to put my old AE and Airport Express to some use) - since I'm no network wizzard I like to keep things simple - by doing so I seem to avoid many of the issues I read about on the forum
    Thanks for any advice.

Hi Pat, I have an iPhone too and I'm quite disappointed that my nice new N router will be running at much lower speeds. When I'm at home I use both my MBP and my phone and switching back and forth doesnt sound appealing.
Anyway, to answer your question, open up the Airport Utility and click Manual Setup at bottom right. Then click on Wireless from the 4 tabs you'll see and choose the appropriate setting from the Radio Mode drop down menu.
    Hope this helps!

  • Time Capsule works with MacBook Pro (Mavericks) but not with IOS devices?  recent problem starting March 1, 2015.

I have a Time Capsule version 7.7.3 (model A1470) which has worked fine for almost 2 years with all devices, Apple and otherwise.  As of beginning of this month, March 2015 - no longer works with a new IPAD mini 3 and 6-month old iPhone 6 (both updated as of last night) BUT still works fine with MacBook Pro (Mavericks 10.9.5) and Epson printer XP-600.
On both IOS devices Airport Utility shows the Time Capsule and shows green light connection to internet, but never does the connection. The little status circle just keeps going round and never shows the Wifi rainbow symbol. both devices work fine on other Wifi's.  Airport Utility on iPhone actually connects enough to check on Airport base station's firmware 7.7.3 and says it is up to date!  but sadly stays on LTE.
    Have tried resetting, replugging etc...
Also, tried checking on updates.  Nothing shows in Airport Utility. When I try to go to see past updates ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware to see if updated, there is no Airport in the Apple folder?
    A mystery...

Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup. see details below.
Here is the typical list of things you should try.. and if this doesn't help post again.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer or perhaps it is better using iOS on the phone or ipad currently having issues.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. For iOS the fixed channels particularly for 2.4ghz has helped.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue. This is a problem for a TC in bridge mode.
If this is of no help.. what modem do you have? What function other than modem does it have.. ie none or router??
How is the TC connected into the network? What function does it have? Router or bridge for example.
Post a few screenshots of the setup.

My wired imac that connects to the time capsule reads about 17mbs. But when I do the speed test that is connected wirelessly it runs at 2mbs. does anybody have any clue on what I am doing wrong? or why the speeds are so slow via my macbook?

    KenRN wrote:
does anybody have any clue on what I am doing wrong?
i'm not sure you're doing anything wrong. for starters, a hardwired (gigabit 1000 mbps) connection is way faster than wireless-N (at best 300 mbps).
you could try if changing the channel your wireless network is broadcasting on brings about a bump in speed. you might be suffering from _*wireless interference*_.
perhaps one of your neighbor's wireless networks is interfering with yours. download iStumbler and note the channels of the other networks in your vicinity. select a channel that is as far away from those as possible.

  • Time Capsule set up Question(s)

I am finally setting up my time capsule and I want to run a back up off of my Mac Book Pro.
I have a wireless network already set thru the airport express.
My time capsule is 802.aan Wi Fi Hard drive, the flat hard drive model (not the latest currently in the stores that stands up).
My MacBook Pro runs on OSX version 10.9
I have the TC connected to my internet router via ethernet and I have an ethernet cable connecting my TC to my Mac Book Pro
The status lights for the ethernet cables are green.
However, the TC status light blinks amber.
When I open the Airport Utility it shows the internet (green) and recognizes my Express (not lit), but it does not show the TC.
When I "click" on the Express icon, a message states theis version of AP Utility doesn't support this station.
Do I have the set up correct?  Do I want my Airport Express lit green?  And why does it not recognize my TC
    Please advise .

You must setup the TC again.. factory reset and then connect to the wireless which is shown under wifi as
Apple Network a1234d The last number being different for all routers based on the MAC address.. only via wireless can the new utility work.. but once setup then you can use ethernet.
Mavericks airport utility seems to be even worse than previous ones.

  • Time capsule wifi working for Apple TV, but not my other 3 devices.

I recently moved. At my previous address, I had my Time Capsule creating a wifi network that all my devices connected to without a problem. Now, only my Apple TV connects.  My MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPad do not connect.  They can see the network, but my MacBook says "you have a self-assigned IP address and cannot connect to the internet."  My phone and iPad see the network but never connect - the little wheely thing just spins and spins. Note, my internet provider and cable modem are now different.
Here are the things I've tried so far. Can you think of anything else I should try, or something I should try again?
    - I have reset my modem and my timecapsule, and then all my devices
    - I have tried manually going to a website by typing in an IP address but it won't open.
    - I have tried specifying open DNS addresses
    - I have turned Airport off, removed Airport as a connection method, forgot my network, removed the password from my keychain, and then reset my computer and turned all of that back on.
    - I have tried renaming the wifi network and setting up a new password.
I would appreciate any suggestions! Thank you.
    - Nina

I fixed it! I tried resetting my settings on all devices, but that didn't work. I found the bad setting:
In Airport utility > manual settings > internet > internet connection. "Connection sharing" was set to bridge. Once I updated that to "Share a public IP address" and then reset my modem, router, and devices, that fixed the problem!

  • How do I move iTunes files off of my MB Pro to Time Capsule in order to make space but not lose the files permanently??

Just set up my Time Capsule and did the big overnight backup.  I am running Leopard and need to upgrade, so I wanted to back everything up before upgrading.  In this process I discovered that I only have 16.14 GB available out of the 297.7 GB capacity.  I believe that having a bunch of movies and TV shows (many of which are HD) are what caused me to eat up so much memory.
I want to move all of these movies and TV shows off of my MacBook Pro but on to my Time Capsule so I can access them later if I want to.  I looked in the Help section but couldn't find info relating to this specific desire.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

The Time Capsule should appear in the Shared section of the Finder. Most iTunes content is located at /Users/<yourusernamehere>/Music/iTunes. Refer to this Apple support document for more information:

My 1TB Time Capsule is labeled 100-240V, 1A, rather than in watts. The manual doesn't seem to have any more detail.

I would describe mine a "warm".

    Mine is very quiet.

  • VERY Complicated iTunes/Time Capsule/Library Transfer Question

Hi all-- looking for some help before I move my beloved iTunes library (over 500GB) from an old PC to a brand spanking new MacBook Pro and a 1TB Time Capsule.
I want to store the music files on the Time Capsule and access everything wirelessly. When I am away from the apartment/TC, I'll usually have my iPod on me-- which I would just plug in and access it through iTunes.
MOST important would be to have everything transfer over and run clean and fast, without weird errors etc. If I can keep my old playlists/play counts/date added etc, great but not necessary.
Any thoughts on the best solution? Do I transfer/copy over using the new sharing function in iTunes? Or is it safer to just connect the hard drive to the computer/time capsule-- and from there, do I make a folder on the TC my default iTunes folder?
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated-- I went Apple (I also just bought an iPhone) for seamless and fast solutions, so I am hoping all this works!
